Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: Banjer Date: 06 Aug 00 - 06:55 AM Oh My, Spaw, I don't claim to understand what they said but look out, I bet it's either illegal, immoral, or fattening! |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: catspaw49 Date: 06 Aug 00 - 09:40 AM Dear Banj....I've been liberally posting Irish wishes and eventually they've been traced back to the source. Post your own Irish wish my friend....and I thank da' Guest and da' Hawk for theirs!!! No Gaelic Required--Irish Wishes for ALL Spaw |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: Jeri Date: 06 Aug 00 - 09:59 AM Yeah, but how do you translate what they've said back into English so you can tell whether to reply "aw, shucks" or "yo mamma?" |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: Big Mick Date: 06 Aug 00 - 12:21 PM I am not sure, what with dialects and such, but as read the wish, it seemed to be "May a mysterious out of this world being gnaw your penis". I'm not kidding, either. Where the hell do you find this stuff, 'Spaw?????? LOL. Slan go Foill, Micheal Mhor (Sorry for the lack of fadas, don't have them loaded on this new machine yet.) |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: catspaw49 Date: 06 Aug 00 - 12:28 PM Man, I've been dropping them all over the place Mick. Check the link in my previous post. It took awhile before anyone caught on and then moon and kat both hit on the fact that I ain't bi-lingual. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: p.j. Date: 06 Aug 00 - 01:09 PM Dearest Micheal Mhor, No need to apologize for your fadalessness, you already type with an Irish accent. How do you load fadas on your machine, anyway? I bought a box of them and tried to pour them into the cereal port, but the raisins kept jamming up the little holes. All seriousness aside, if 'Spaw has learned to produce gratuitous diacritical marks, I must do the same. Exactly how do ya get a load of those fadas, guys? pj

Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: katlaughing Date: 06 Aug 00 - 01:17 PM PJ look at the "HTML Practise FEB00" thread. it has a long posting with all of the codes to use. |

Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: catspaw49 Date: 06 Aug 00 - 02:17 PM It was linked from somewhere, but I have no idea where!! When I'm on a site, I'm an inveterate surfer and check some of their links. I just don't recall where I hit this one at. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: Banjer Date: 06 Aug 00 - 02:49 PM Yer right, 'Spaw, this is fun!! Figure a way to translate these things and you will see that this could be Cleigh O'Possum's wish for you! Go bpléasca na gráinneoga cealgrúnacha do thóin bheagmhaitheasach!! |

Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: Little Hawk Date: 07 Aug 00 - 12:15 AM Since most people (including me) do not know how to translate these ancient Irish good wishes/curses into English, I will do you all a favor and let you know what mine was before the translator program put it into Gaelic (or whatever that stuff is...). In English it said "May the hounds of hell gnaw at your worthless butt!" Ha! Ha! What a riot. I wish I could translate all the other ones, but I have no idea how to... Enjoy, enjoy... |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: Big Mick Date: 07 Aug 00 - 12:20 AM Methinks, Little Hawk, that your translator program was written by a very polite programmer. I am not a pro in Irish, I just have the benefit of being around the language a great deal, most of my growing up years. I am fairly certain that our friend was referring to having a penis gnawed...............LOL. I can't believe the shite we do here. I love this place. Mick |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: Little Hawk Date: 07 Aug 00 - 01:23 AM My God. I hope Spaw does not take this to heart. Ha. Ha. Don't blame me, I just followed the instructions on the program, and it said "worthless butt". I will take great care NOT to use this phrase if visiting Ireland (where I hope to find the birthplace of Jesus). (COL) (chuckling out loud) |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: CamiSu Date: 07 Aug 00 - 07:06 AM Yes, but how does one PRONOUNCE it? |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: Brendy Date: 07 Aug 00 - 07:49 AM The second one wishes that Monica Lewinsky would blow up (ie. explode)your collection of investments Or words to that effect B. |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: catspaw49 Date: 07 Aug 00 - 09:16 AM Actually, I had sprinkled so many around that I was "learning some of the words" and I was able to translate in reverse by entering the ones I knew and plugging in a few others til I got it. I was really fond of putting completely ludicrous stuff together (May the malevolent hedgehogs soil your underwear) sso I got to see quite a few..............Glad you all enjoy the program; it cracked me up. People are always throwing Gaelic stuff in around here and I have no idea what it means, so this is a bit of reverse fun!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: CarolC Date: 07 Aug 00 - 09:55 AM This is, allegedly, an old Gaelic blessing which I have ripped off from a catalogue. May those who love us, love us And those that don't love us, May God turn their hearts; And if he doesn't turn their hearts May he turn their ankles So we'll know them by their limping This is my first attempt at using the HTML line break technique, so I hope it works out. Carol |

Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: paddymac Date: 07 Aug 00 - 05:52 PM CamiSu - it's been my experience that gealige becomes a bit easier to pronounce after you've had several pints. It helps if the listeners have kept pace with the pints . |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 07 Aug 00 - 07:01 PM No,no no,,, that's Flemish.... To speak Gaelic you have to drink whiskey, it works differently. I'm fluent in Flemish, especially if I drink all that crate that the Shark bought back from Dranouter.... LTS |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: catspaw49 Date: 07 Aug 00 - 10:34 PM Ya know, I probably ought to throw in here that I NEVER meant any offense to the Irish or any of our wonderful linguists here. My roots are not Irish, but I love the sound of the language. And paddy me boy, YOU KNOW you don't have to be drunk to speak it!!! Hmmmmm.........Hope I didn't accidentally reinforce the "Drunken Irish" myth here. Frankly, I'm envious of those who are fluent in any second language. I'd be satisfied to be fluent in English. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: Little Hawk Date: 08 Aug 00 - 10:05 PM Pues, Senora Ortega, como se gusta ser viejo? Y donde esta' mi arana? Necesito mi arana mucho! La necesito ahora! No puedo pensar sin mi arana. Ay chihuahua! (If only I could have added Spanish punctuation to the above...oh, well...) |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: catspaw49 Date: 08 Aug 00 - 10:16 PM I told Aine in a PM that I'm a lousy linguist, but I have a great appreciation for the beauty of other languages. Do any of you remember hearing Carlin's bit about listening to baseball in Spanish? When I was a kid, my grandfather would listen to baseball games in Italian and I'd sit there and try to follow along, not really knowing a word, but enjoying the flow and excitement of the sound of the words.......Latin languages are so musical. I never knew what was going on, but they made it sound so beautiful, so exciting......even if the pitcher was probably just standing on the mound scratching his nuts. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: Little Hawk Date: 08 Aug 00 - 10:32 PM Right on, Spaw. Spanish is an utterly wonderful sounding language. When Cuban girls speak in Spanish I just about fall down on the ground at their feet. Ditto for Mexican girls. Well, if they're nice anyway...which most of them are. Do you remember the scene in "A Fish Called Wanda" where Kevin Kline (the obnoxious CIA man, Otto) raves on in bogus Italian gibberish while Jamie Lee Curtis unravels before his eyes? Ha! Ha! Then there's John Cleese raving on in Russian while she turns into a puddle on the floor. Hilarious! Gotta be the funniest movie of the last 20 years or more. |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: catspaw49 Date: 08 Aug 00 - 11:18 PM Yep.....Karen and I just watched it again the other day. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: Áine Date: 08 Aug 00 - 11:48 PM Well, I gotta be honest here, none of ya have experienced true aural bliss until you've heard a hurling match being announced in a pure County Donegal accent -- oooooh, I'm gettin' all shivery just thinkin' about it... -- Áine ;-) |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: GUEST,Den at work Date: 09 Aug 00 - 11:55 AM Unless Aine the announcer happens to be Michael O'Hare. That wee man used to drive me up the feckin' wall. Although having said that he wasn't from Donegal. BTW I have to apologize for giving you some eronious information in regards The Next Market Day. The song appears on the Oisin album, Over the Moor to Maggie, not on the Red Crow by Altan, sorry Den. |

Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 10 Aug 00 - 04:28 AM I knew someone who claimed he could say in 24 languages:"My friend will pay for the drinks". Everyone said he was a cunning linguist. (At least I think that's what they said... RtS |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: CarolC Date: 10 Aug 00 - 06:03 AM Could you say that again, Roger the skiffler? I didn't quite hear you the first time. As for accents, a Scottish accent adds at least ten points to a man's sexiness factor. If he's good looking, it adds fifty. Carol |
Subject: RE: Hey Spaw...listen up!!! From: Little Hawk Date: 10 Aug 00 - 09:43 AM No kidding, Carol? I'll have to work on my Scottish accent... |
