Hello, my friends. I am indeed spending a great deal of time away from home just now and not in places where I can access a computer. Please have patience with me, this happens every so often. The life of a Union Organizer is oftimes not their own.

Also, on the issue of the donations, I have been in contact with Wayne and Connie for about a month now, based on a suggestion from Banjer (Thanks, Banj). Connie asked that we wait until she has had time to broach the subject with Karen, before we take steps. I am not so sure, if we should not just do what is in our hearts and start sending it if we feel we would like to. I will approach them and make sure we would not offend, and get back with you all in a few days.

LATEST UPDATE AS OF MIDNIGHT LAST NIGHT

You will see that this is taking a toll on Wayne and Connie, as well. Let us include them in our prayer/good thought chain. What follows is what Connie sent me this morning.

K called the school while I was teaching my first class and asked for my supervisor, told her what was going on, who then of course came and got me to talk to k on the phone. Conversation essentiallly was: P still loosing blood somewhere. all the tests they have run have not revealed from/to where. The GP told k this is about the worst of the worst situations...not sure if it's operable and if it is they (at that time ) weren't able to find a surgeon willing to operate. (Since then they have located a doc who will talk to them about it if they do a couple more tests and he studies them a bit.) So for the meanwhile they are trying to buy time by continuing to transfuse him. Outside chance it could seal itself off (that would be in the miracle catagory)a little better chance that it is operable, a little better Chance that they could find someone to do the surgery that is willing to take a risk, if none of these things happen then he would eventually "bleed out". They have run more tests and are still not sure where he is leaking. Wayne just came home the last test has not been read yet but it is assumed that if there was anything outstanding on it that they would have said something. Now that leaves us with a the possibility that he's still leaking and they still don't know where--or the wonderful thought that the LORD is answering our prayers and is just healing P Himself. That would be too cool. Sorry, I'd like to be the perveyor of some wonderful update but at this time we have no exciting info.

I stayed with k until time to make the rounds to pick up the kids from school, then Wayne stayed wih her till she bedded down for the night and P was asleep.

Some how I assumed that I would be 70-80 yrs old before I had to deal with this among my close firends --not my parents' friends.

Sort through and post what makes sense and seems appropriate.

Just talked with ICU and Karen is at breakfast. Pat is sleeping and has already had his breakfast. As of now, they have not found the bleeding and more blood has been ordered for today.

I do not have a number into the ICU waiting room and the nurse said she didn't believe therre was one. (Number, that is.) Karen is never in there as she stays with Pat. I hate to call and bother the nurses and tie up their phone so have promised that I will keep my calls to one a day. Karen will probably call me back and if there are any additions to the news, I will get them to you.

Kat, Banjer, Mick etal we appreciate your thoughts of sending not only prayers but financial help. I think that Pat would be upset but at this point even he would see this as an act of love. We are doing everything in the family that we can to help Karen. She needs to go back to work on Monday or her salary will stop. She is under a great deal of pressure and, of course, cannot discuss problems with her best friend, Pat. I would like so very much to say, thanks but we can handle this. However, there comes a time when one must face reality. This has been financially devestating to Karen and Pat and is beyond the realm of what her sister and I can do to help her. I know that any help you send would be received in the spirit with which it was sent and would be of immense help to them.

Now, as to the mechanics. Could it simply be sent to Karen at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster? She does work there and maybe her mail could be held for her at the histology lab.

My suggestion would be to have Karen or someone go rent a P.O. Box which could posted, unlike a home address which for reasons of privacy you would not neccessarily want to post on the net. Also, it would be easier to handle a volume of mail that way than by regular delivery. (And we do hope for VOLUME!) We have to remember that while we all consider ourselves a community, we have no control over visitors from outside whose intentions may be less than honorable!

Now that Clarence has given the nod to the project, I suggest we all get ready and at the first sign of an address, PO Box #, or whatever lets start the ball rolling. Thanks, Kat and Mick for updates...and special thanks to 'Spaw-Maw-in-Law, (Clarence) for the approval of the assistance. So Pat may be a little PO'ed? Well, as I see it, he can just put this on his list of things to overcome. I've never met, nor even had the privilge as some of you have had to talk with him, but I feel secure in thinking that he'll accept the assistance in the spirit that we offer it! He has done much for others in the form of foster parenting and child advocay and now it is his turn to need a little help.

I almost forgot to mention, and it's probably OK now that the cat's outta the bag so to speak. I asked Big Mick about the possibilty of putting together some sort of benefit performance for the 'Spaw family, proceeds to offset bills, etc. Also all you performers that play in informal settings, ie:pubs, local events, etc. could possibly put out a container for donations from your audience for assistance for one of our fellow folkies. A note could be attached to the container with a brief explanation. I know I myself have dropped several dollars into various such containers knowing that if the fellow who was aking believed in it, then I did too! Could start this weekend and just hold the funds until an address or Box # becomes available.

Well, I, too, feel the need for some action. Until we know more or get any POB's from them, if you all trust me, I would be happy to receive mail for them and forward it on to their snail mail address.

Because this is an open forum to anyone who comes in, I would prefer giving you my POB number through message or email. I suppose we could send it to the hospital in Lancaster, as Clarence opined, but also wouldn't want to upset Karen's employer with a deluge.

Let me know what you all think, okay? Send me a message or email me at [e-mail]. And, I agree, 'Spaw can just add this to the list and get over it. I don't care how much litter he flings, I'd gladly clean it up, give him a big hug, and say "we're doing it anyway!"

Yeah, Jeri, I was looking for that VERY song this morning and couldn't find it! Glad you came up with it. I suggest that if we need theme song for this effort, we use that one. Beautiful sentiments....Kat, I have no qualms about sending to you, I suggested the PO Box for the same reaason that you cite, if we send to the hospital it may become a burden on their mail clerks or facilities. The USPO is payed to handle mail, let them earn their keep! Can someone other than Karen set up a PO Box? It's time to get down to brass tacks here and figure out the logistics of this thing. I just checked with the hospital and the do allow card and small arrangements of flowers in ICU. Very unusual for around here.

Karen's mom was able to fly up from Atlanta to help out with the boys--since we will be gone or tied up with Wayne's graduation this weekend. Emotionally, this is something like giving birth to twins where one is healthy and the other has congenital challenges.

Folks, we are all just playing this by ear. I know that Karen will not leave Pat to set up a Post Office Box so when someone suggested that I do it, I did. I haven't fine tuned exactly how I willl handle the donations. I can either set us an account here for Karen and deposit them for her, or I can send them to her and let her deposit them. We will just cross each bridge as it comes. It is not a Post Office Box and the Post Office decrees that since it is at Mail Boxes Etc. the address must be written as follows.

Just called Connie and she had just spoken with Karen. Blood count still too low. He has had 12 units and they think that if it was going to seal over it would have and he is still losing blood. They are going to operate in the morning at 8:30 in the hope that they can find the problem quickly and fix it. Connie is writing to mick and he will post a more complete description of what has gone on. You all know by now that surgery for Pat is not a happy thought. However, he has dodged a good many bullets and he just may have some more of his nine lives as a mudcat left. I am sure that he can use some heavy duty positive thinking, prayer and light. Connie or Karen will call me as soon as he is out of surgery and I will have my fingers over the keys to let you all know how our 'spaw is doing. Karen just called to let me know about tomorrow. She is hopeful and says that Pat seems in reasonable spirits. She is also realistic and knows how risky this is. Kat, she said she talked to you last night and told me how great it was to hear your voice and how good you made her feel. Thank you.

She went home today to shower and to get on the internet to talk to you folks and in her words to me, "my /?"!*** 16 year old has done something to the computer and I can't get on the internet." Mike, of course, denies all knowledge of a problem. She said to tell you all thank you and she looks forward to both she and Pat getting on and mudcatting.

I did tell her that I had set up the PMB for her and that some of you had already sent help. She is not going to tell 'spaw until he is much stronger. It is always harder to accept a gift graciously than it is to give one. But know that your help, prayers, concern and comfort will be appreciated forever. She and Pat have given so much and now their bread is returning accross the water. Love to all....clarence

I have been suffering from a broken computer followed by a broken internet connection, so I just caught up with this. When I left catspaw he was recovering. I am a fellow aneurism victim; but I have managed to keep it from growing. Whatever healing energy is going into that, I am sending in catspaw's direction (and a check in the Georga direction.)

I've had surgery before--nothing as serious as Pat's going to have tomorrow--and I know how much it can take out of you. I pray Pat has the strength left to survive the surgery.

I pray that the surgical team's hands are quick and sure, that the surgeon's eyes are quick to find the source of the bleeding and that his skills are such that he can repair the damage.

I pray that whatever channels we use for sending our love and healing thoughts to Pat will carry them in sufficient volume to help Pat win this struggle.

I pray that this community, this forum, will soon be blessed with heaping qualities of the finest quality of the real stuff, the flying litter of the original litter kicker, Catspaw the Magnificent.

Surgery was moved up an hour this morning. Pat went up at 7:30 and was thrilled to pieces. He hates that waiting around stuff. We should know something by about ll:00. Pat and Karen were both calm and at peace before the beginning of the operation. Prayers would be good here.

As Banjer said, don't even give GASP or Alex another thought. The Majority of US are full of BS and proud to share it!

I, too, love classical and most other kinds of music. I find it a comfort and an aid when I am trying to focus my mind, esp for prayer or meditation. I know yours will come back to you.

I give thanks to the mother, father god of my heart, that Pat is strong and healthy and on the mend.

Connie just called and Pat is out of surgery, Karen is with him in recovery. It went well. They removed a foot of small intestine and it will be given the usual tests and we will have the results on Tuesday. He came through like the trooper he is and considering the odds against him this was no small feat. We appreciate the prayers and good vibes and know that they played a significant part. More later as I get further updates. Way to go 'spaw. clarence
