Most 'Jacobite' songs were written long after the events they commemorate. There are several books on such starting with J. Hogg's 'The Jacobite Relics of Scotland', 2 vols., 1819 and 1821 (available as reprint from AMS Press). |

Come o'er the Stream Charlie, The News from Moidart,Johnny Cope and King Fareweel are my Favourites as well as the old "chestnut,The Skye Boat Song.The best performers of them (sung with real gusto) were The Corries,Ronnie Brown and Roy Williamson (who also wrote Flower of Scotland)you can still buy their albums in good record shops specialising in folk music from Britain.Hope this Helps. |

The words with translations are all there as well as great backround to the songs.

"You Jacobites by name", except for 1st verse is by Robert Burns (original version is in Scarce Songs 1 on my website). "Haughs of Cromdale" is a phoney where Montrose comes back to life a little over 40 years after he was execupted. "Wee Wee German Lairdie" is by Allan Cunningham; one he passed off on Cromek (Remains of Nithsdale and Galloway Songs) as an old song. |

From: duart Date: 09 Sep 00 - 03:09 AM some more info on the McColl album:-1) "Parcel of Rogues" is by Burns lamenting the fact that the Scottish Parliament of 1707 had sold off Scoland as an independant nation;2)"Ye Jacobites by Name" is also by Rabbie,who was a Jacobite by traditon and emotion but by this time was a Govt.Customs Officer by employment and had to appear pro-Hanoverian; 3) "Haughs of Cromdale" is an anachronistic song concerning Montrose against Cromwell's(!) army (but it's still a great song); 4) "Piper of Dundee" refers to Claverhouse of Dundee; and 5)"Wee,Wee German Lairdie is a manufactured on by Cunningham. |

If I recall, the Earl(?) of Derwentwater was the last person to be executed for the 1715 rebellion. Having been caught tried and sentenced, he somehow escaped, came back in the '45, was caught again and topped under the original sentence in 1746. Regards Walrus |

From: RoseRed295 Date: 09 Sep 00 - 09:01 AM The saddest one and maybe the most misunterstood one has to be Loch Lomond version 3 on here...I'd be a rich woman if I had a dollar for every time I asked someone what the song was about and they told me it was about some guy having a wonderful time walking back to Scotland..lol...and not a clue about the 2 friends, one going home and the other one not going home at all..at least not in this lifetime....a sad, but hauntingly beautiful song when one knows the story behind it.. |

Date: 10 Sep 00 - 07:14 PM Hugh Shields, 'Shamrock, Rose and Thistle', #11, on Hogg's 'The Bonnie Moor Hen' (Jacobite Relics) - 'one gets the impression that an older love song has been adapted', and Shields gives a short traditional version of such, "The bonny moorhen" (3 verses only). I know of no good text. There is a song of this title in a manuscript in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, but I don't know what that song is. Perhaps Murray on Saltspring can help here. More than likely (my guess anyhow), is that "The bonny brown hare" on the Bodley Ballads website is derived from "The Bonny Moorhen". Similar is "The [Bonny/Bonnie] Black Hare" in DT and on the Bodley Ballads website. Instead of shooting the bonny black hare, the motif is ruffling the feathers of the bonny moorhen.

The second relates the Celtic myth that, when a Celt dies in a foreign land, the soul is transported underground (the low road) back to the native land before departing the earth for the hereafter. |

And that is based on old American TV Public Broadcasting showings ofthe Scottish Fiddle Orchestra, and catching the Tannahill Weavers at Milwaukee's Irish Festival. Hardly the way to learn the music of another society. I had learned something of the history of Loch Lomond, only because it has been one of my favorite songs for years. |

We were on holiday in Edinburgh at the time: little did we think that we would eventually come to live here ( in 1986) and stay on - and on - and on !! |
