Subject: Help with ideas:What can I do for money? From: MichaelAnthony Date: 01 Oct 00 - 06:54 PM Mudcatters, I'm looking for ideas on how to make some money to pay the bills...Working a few nights in a Cajun resturant bringing out food, but the cooks argue so much, orders get backed up, customers complain... I guess the challenging part is doing something that doesn't rub me the wrong way -- sometimes I just can't do the arbitrary corporate full-time thing. Got fired from my last attempt, which was a good decision on their part. Maybe something music-related...just asking for some help with ideas...or something sociology-related. Most folks I know can get out there easily and get working, but it sometimes seems like a threat to doing music and being real for to me. MichaelAnthony |

You might want to ask around to see if someone you trust knows of a good one. A bad one just gives you a number of written questionaires to nail down a type of job for you. A good one will also give you some questionaires, but will more importantly help you get inside of yourself and figure out what you want to do, and what you need to do to get their. |

Find a restaurant where harmony, rather than friction, is the norm. Of course, such a place would attract other workers, and may not have an opening. Yet if you don't look, you may miss a lucky opportunity. Check on short-term or seasonal work, like delivering phone books or holiday season positions. Donate blood/plasma. See if you can get a musical gig--playing/singing at a coffee shop, some type of program for grade schoolers, working in a music shop, etc. |

From: WyoWoman Date: 02 Oct 00 - 12:27 AM Hey there, MichaelAnthony, I am SO in the thick of this conversation myself, both for my own self and with my daughter. What helped me years ago when I was trying to decide my career direction was to make a "skills resume," which involved taking a look as far back as I wanted to go at the things that brought me satisfaction and a sense of a job well-done. That could be anything -- not related to school or career or anything else particularly. But just look in your life at what challenges you, satisfies you (shut up 'Spaw) and/or makes you proud of yourself. For me, for example, it was acting and singing and spring-board diving and, oddly enough, buying thrift store clothes and sewing them into entirely different garments. And other stuff equally disparate in subject matter. But I looked at some of the commonalities and they involved risk and creativity and challenge and certainly nothing routine. Very soon after that, I had a shot at my first job at a daily newspaper, and a career was launched. It has absolutely filled the bill and has been a fascinating, challenging career for 16 years, with rarely one day looking anything like the one before it or the one after. A perfect job for a challenge junkie like me. And now, I'm taking a look again at where I fit in daily journalism and what else I want to do with my life and ... so the process continues. Also, there are a couple of books I'd recommend: "I Could Do Anything if I Knew What to Do," and "What Color is Your Parachute," which now comes in workbook form, too. Do honor yourself and take yourself seriously in the process. When you're in your 20s and 30s, having just a job works ok. But by the time you get in your 40s and 50s, etc., you need to be about your work in life, doing something that uses the deepest and best in you. Otherwise you start feeling empty spaces in your heart that can get to be pretty vast if they aren't filled with personal satisfaction. Good luck -- and remember, the beginning of wisdom is NOT KNOWING... beginner's mind. It's ok to muddle around in the question for a while until things begin to sort themselves out...some people get too uncomfortable with the questions and give up before they ever get started. ww

My process has definitely been one of climbs and plateaus, not a steady upward incline. And I imagine that's true of most of us. The idea that you find The Thing and stick with it forever is pretty much passe. We're living so much longer now and the world is changing too fast to experience that kind of stasis, and if we do, often it represents a death of the spirit in some way. Resignation, fear of moving forward. But good for you for looking and wondering. And I agree -- at the very least, switch restaurants. Life is too short to spend it among disagreeable people. ww |

Also, your decision will be different depending on your age; choosing something at 25 may be very different from what you try at 45. From: M.Ted Date: 02 Oct 00 - 07:13 PM Well(jerk that I can sometimes be), I am going to give you the obligatory kick in the pants(hope you don't mind;-)) The first thing is, why haven't you thought this through before now? I don't know how old you are, but it is obvious that you are old enought to work, and, whatever you say about music and all, you haven't given a career in music any serious thought, and it sound like you have used it as an excuse for not giving anything else any serious thought, either. Do you think anyone is going just hand over a nice music job to you(lots of money, no stress, job security, and best of all, plenty of really great people who won't hassle you)? For that matter, do you think that anyone is going to just fork over a job in a "nice" restaurant? Ain't gonna happen. You have to sit down and think about where you are want to be five years from now, and then do a lot of homework to find out how the people who got there did it--Then, you've got to do what it takes to get there, even if it means hanging on at the crummy restaurant for a while while you get together the cash you need for more school, or for a good instrument, or for photos or what all. If you need the money right away, there are temp agencies that can accomodate--The bottom line is that you have to decide what you want to do first, and a big part of that is figuring out what will make you happy in the long run and what you can live with in the short run- If you don't do this, you won't get anywhere, and in five years, you'll still be in that restaurant, on in some other that is just the same. First, YES on what WW posted, I did that, it was a huge shift. Let me know if you need help doing as she suggested. I love pulling resumes out of people who may not know quite how wonderful they are or how much they have accomplished or learned. (Open offer to anyone. Barter something for the help.) Next. OK. House concerts!!!!!!! See threads on how. See me for another idea if you want to do Christian ones. But maybe the bigger questions are, what are your dreams, what would you like to be doing, and what are the steps to get there? The first step right now which you could actually take? Steps to sustain you as you do work now you may not love but which will move you in that direction? It takes longer if you don't start. And what are they trying to tell you , these things you do that don't go well for you? What is the underlying lesson there that you can look to, as you leave those patterns of behavior behind? Oh I know, "they" were a**holes. They probably really were. But... what did you need to learn there, that you kept going back into those situations? ~S~ |

In the rational way you decide what you like to do and do it no matter what else is happening in your world. I have a friend who is a potter and sculpter. All he owned in the world was a piece of land and he busted his butt to buy that worthless piece of scrub pine and rock. He scoured construction sites hauling off construction debris and keeping anything that looked like it would be useful. At the end of ten years he had built himself a solar powered house and a wood fired kiln. He ain't rich but he's happy. My way is a little different. In 1981 I was a part time employee with a pregnant wife and a dog. A full time job came my way and I took it. Over the years I've hated that job and then grown to like it. I will never love it. I am now within a decade of being able to retire. I've busted my butt and now I own a run down apartment house and i'm still working my butt off. I rationalize it by deciding the job pays for my music. Either option is open to you but you'll work your butt off no matter what. Trust me on this one. You're better off doing something you like. |

Even if you have to stay there for a little while, shield yourself from it, and don't start acting that way yourself. I'm in a similar boat, but am just starting out on this journey through the work-world. It's quite a different world than what I'm used to. I hope I can find something that will satisfy me rather than get me down. I hope you do, too.

Then there's busking, too...better in Europe than in America I hear. Giving lessons. Perhaps working in a studio or music store, or helping them with their website. Sell the recordings you've pressed already. Savc up $300 and join Taxi and try submitting some of the better songs. Sell quality sampled sounds on CD. For sociological issues, consider writing for the local alternative publication.

There is a big shortage of bass players everywhere, especially ones that can read. Get a job playing bass, even if you have to play for free. Then, ACTUALLY SHOW UP for the job! It's a win-win combination: a bass player that actually shows up. The word will get around fast, leaders will be calling you, and pretty soon you can ask for money and get it. Whatever you do, it isn't going to last unless you make a plan, and set a goal. Those may be boring concepts, but not as boring as spending your life in dead-end situations working by other people's rules. Start controlling your environment. If you don't want to deal with corporate situations, start your own business. Can you teach music? Flower arranging? computer stuff? worm farming? If you're finding yourself immobile, there are free courses in damn near everything at most YMCAs. Got a few muscles? Find a band and become a volunteer roadie.....after a month or two, they'll PAY you (trust me). Even though my friends M Ted, and Doug R. are on the opposite side of the fence politically from me in lotsa issues, I'll bet they agree that there is no better time than right now to create your OWN business. 'What Color is Your Parachute' is loquacious but it has good ideas. I bought a copy once, lent it out and haven't seen it again. I'll look for 'I Could Do Anything if I Knew What to Do.' A good book to read is 'Your Money or Your Life,' especially if you already know that you are not thrilled with the 9 till you drop routine. One of the many good books I found was called 'How to Put More Time in Your Life.' It's an out of print book that you can find at the Orillia library. I'm not sure it's the Dru scott book that's listed on Amazon as out of print. I took notes from one chapter. I will send them in the next message. |

Quick Cash: College-Town or Beach/Tourist Resort bartenders or any bar with a lot of volume and a lot of drunks. Couple of hundred $$ per night, all cash. Older folks (not college students) seem to have good luck getting these jobs because their older and therefore supposedly more responsible. Hippie's don't tip too well, so avoid that scene. Gay bars typically have a higher tip ratio than most others, and there is typically less trouble... I hear. |

If you want quick cash, put together all that old junk you've compiled and go sell it at a flea market. It'l cost about $8 for the table and you won't believe what people will buy! Travel some of your local streets, not in your own neighborhood though, and find treasures that others have put out on the sidewalk. Go sell em'. If your ok right now and need long term, go to school! Doesn't matter how old you are, you cal always learn something to make money. Advice has been to see a career counsler. Local collages will help you for free, and if you're over 24, there are grants, awards, etc. that will get you through college for FREE!! Or, do both! If you're only answering to yourself, then try anything you like - you can always retrieve the situation, and you can always make enough to live on (not well, but enough to stay alive) from casual/minimum-wage work. If you've got family/dependents, though, then the essential thing is long-term stability. Holiday resort rep is a reasonable job - some hassles when the s*** hits the fan, and it's not hugely well-paid, but you get your room and food paid, and you get to be somewhere really nice. If you've got holiday-related skills (eg. life-saving, sailing, diving, mechanicking, skiing) then you can get even better deals. Grab. |

From: mousethief Date: 03 Oct 00 - 01:41 PM If you can type (I mean really type not just hunt-and-peck), and can find your way around a computer, you can always find work as a "temp" through one of the Temp agencies. I put myself through grad school doing this. It was great -- I was even Kelly Girl of the Month once (despite my beard and male genitalia!). Most of the temp agencies will even train you on whatever software is important in your local area. The great thing about temping is that you never are in any one place for very long -- if the people are too uptight, well in a day or two you'll be somewhere else. When temping, ALWAYS sign up with as many agencies as you can. That way you can pick and choose between jobs for the best pay, location, length of assignment, etc.

I'd tried retail sales and management, real estate and some others. Was generally unhappy until I went to work (for rather low pay) at a group home for developmentally disabled adults. After initial misgivings, I found myself loving the work and the residents I worked with. Started taking classes to learn more about the population I was working with, found myself in the mental health/social work track at the local community college...transferred to a university...got a job at a private psychiatric hospital...the world of work just got better and better. Found out for me it was more a matter of what I could offer than what I could get. If this isn't your bag, there are a lot of two-year degrees these days (especially medical/technical) that will allow you to earn a decent living. Things like respiratory therapy, x-ray tech, ultrasound tech, etc. Also, these days, many report that web design and management is among the highest pay/highest job satisfaction rate. The career counseling is a great idea. I didn't discover it until I had found my way. Interestingly, my testing rated strongest in music and performing arts. second was social work. Wish I'd known about that sort of thing when I was young and confused! Anyway, we wish you well. J. |

From: GUEST,GUEST Date: 27 Jan 02 - 04:13 AM I've posted for advice during vunerable times, seeing this place as being full of experienced human people who have to be fairly grounded or cool because they like folk music! I was surprised at some of the ill-intentioned bitter posts. There were more insightful empathic ones, but the hurtful ones...I just remember them more. Also surprised that some experienced folks don't always follow a safe convention to avoid confilct: Just speak honestly of personal experience -- use "I" instead of "you". But there was a time when I didn't know the advantages of this, and still remind myself. I don't want the answer to be "just read and post music threads". That may be the answer...probably doesn't have to be...guess it depends on where I am that day. Something ordinary but interesting happened to me the other day. I went to see a public event at the city auditorium and my friend noted that "people are basically good". The whole event was full of basically good, friendly people -- it had to be, because it acutally happened smoothly and enjoyably. Anyway, it was a good reminder for me that the real world is just as valid as the printed electronic forum world. It's just the limitedness but the permanence of the written word has a great impact for me. Yeah, I may shrug it all off soon. Like being a little vulnerable though.
