I heard this song once, more years ago than I care to admit. If anyone could send the words, I would be most grateful.

I have the song--we were given the choice of singing it in my voice class this year--it's a riot. Will post to you tomorrow. It starts out -- The first day after Christmas, my lover and I had a fight?"

THE TWELVE DAYS AFTER CHRISTMAS by Frederick Silver
(Not sung to the same tune as the other song!)

The first day after Christmas, my true love and I had a fight,
And so I chopped the pear tree down and burned it just for spite.
Then, with a single cartridge, I shot that blasted partridge,
That my true love, my true love gave to me.

The second day after Christmas, I pulled on the old rubber gloves
And very gently wrung the necks of both the turtle doves,
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

The third day after Christmas, my mother caught the croup;
I had to use the three French hens to make some chicken soup.
The four calling birds were a big mistake,
For their language was obscene.
The five gold rings were completely fake
And they turned my fingers green.

The sixth day after Christmas, the six laying geese wouldn't lay:
I gave the whole darn gaggle to the ASPCA.

On the seventh day what a mess I found:
All seven of the swimming swans had drowned,
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

The eighth day after Christmas, before they could suspect,
I bundled up the . . .
Eight maids a-milking,
Nine pipers piping,
Ten ladies dancing,
'Leven lords a-leaping,
Twelve drummers drumming
(Spoken) Well, actually I kept one of the drummers (girls)
Well, actually I kept one of the maids a-milking (boys)

And sent them back collect.
I wrote my true love, "We are through, love"
And I said in so many words,
"Furthermore your Christmas gifts were for the birds!"
(Echo of "four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves
And a partridge in a pear tree.")

A good sentiment for today, well sung at the Singaround by Gayle Wade.

Nice if you like that kind of stilted humour.

But why is this is a good sentiment for *today*? The twelve days of Christmas are 25 December until 5 January and have barely begun.

The Twelve Days I Served at Mass
I have been looking for years for the words to a parody of 12 Days of Xmas sung from the point of view of an altar boy. I can only remember the first 6 days working backwards as follows:

On the 6th day I served at mass the rector said to me
Swing the silver censer
Make the crucial sign (day 5)
Count the congregation (day 4)
Move the alar missal (day 3)
Light the 6 altar candles (day 2)
And genuflect on the right knee (day 1)

I heard it in 1961 at an Anglican Church camp in Brtish Columbia and have not been able to find it anywhere. It follows the procedures for the mass at a high Anglican Church. I have just written a book called My Paddle's Keen and Bright coming out next month about people's summer camp experiences and I'd like to be able to sing the whole song at my book launches. If anyone out there has any leads on this song I'd be mpst grateful.

Thank you!

Rika

> The Twelve Days I Served at Mass

I saw this, thought the Management might like it, and sang it. "That's my kind of service," says Herself with a very audible smile; "swing that incense."
