Harpgirl!

I would not expect too many details from Derry, NH. They are very non-committal folk around there. Did you know there's both a Derry and a Londonderry, NH! How's that for non-committal? Our only hope is Barry Finn.

Seriously, sorry to be missing all the great singing that must be going on there. Bonnie and I both had gigs tonight otherwise we would bellowing all over Barry's house right now.

All the best,
Dan

I left at about 1:mumble. They were still singing, (Barry and family, RiB, Kendall, CamiSu, SINSULL, MaryMac, Joe Offer, Naemanson, John Nolan and people I'm forgetting) and still had plenty of great food - not to mention enough beverages to float a battleship. My voice had had it, and I wanted to get home before I fell asleep. Everyone appeared to be having a great time - I sure was. We didn't have one huge pile of people at one time - just a moderate pile Someone would leave and someone would show up, and there was music all day and all night.

BTW, Joe Offer got Barry's cookie back for him, so maybe we ought to start a "welcome new member" thread.

I'd write more, but I'm wiped and I need to crawl off to bed. There is brunch tomorrow.

It was great! I was there too, Jeri! And meeting so many wonderful people was such a trip... added to Jeris list: BatGoddess & her person Tom, Peg from Boston, Susan A-R, the Woodchucks, Lucius from NH, assorted lurkers. The privilege of having Ewan McVicar and Debra Cowan at my house on Friday and bringing them to Barry's on Saturday was wonderful. And the music- on and on and on. The Woodchucks were there, too. Wavestar, I really enjoyed your mum- she told a great story, and we discovered mutual acquaintences in the sheep world!
The Manchester UK connection didn't work, but we spent some time on PalTalk, singing with Alison of OZ, morticia, Jon Freeman, Mrs. Duck, and a few others.
I left early with my daughter, knackered but happy. The golden moment for me was sitting on the couch, listening to the music, looking around, and thinking, these are people I know and care about and feel so comfortable with in 3D- what a place!

Animaterra, I was just trying to list the people still awake and singing when I left. If I had tried to list everyone...oy.

The story...about the little girl who went down to the sea shore to fish instead of the lake, and had a run-in with the People From Under the Ice (can't remember the name) was great! Wavestar, your Mom is one heck of a storyteller!

Kendall did Loreena, and had a couple of fiddles playing along. Let me tell you, Susan A-R is one of those people who can find just the right notes to play to make a song sound like magic! Lucius started Banish Misfortune, and she did the most incredible 2nd part...

Ewan's song, "All the Tunes in the World," to the tune of Southwind, with everyone gathered 'round the computer...I hope that came across OK on PalTalk, because it sure sounded great where I was.

It was worth it to go just to hear Peg sing Bob Franke's "Two Little Girls" (not sure if title's correct) - not many singers give me goose bumps.

I'll shut up before I start naming every single person and song. My memory's not that good anyway, and there were lots of people and songs...

...oh boy!!! What songs were sung? By whom? Joe Offer was there???? He hasn't been home for months! Was BruceO there? Did Barry sing any work songs? Was Margarte Christl there? Did she sing? What was the highlight for you Jeri?

I think I may go back in a bit. I listed some of the highlights, but there were just too many to remember! Me singing Fire Down Below and having everyone join in - there's nothing like that feeling of support you get when you start a song and wonder if you'll be left high and dry on the chorus, and then everyone joins in loud and strong and lifts you up with their voices...

BruceO - no; Margarte (?) - no, I don't think so. Barry did a couple of sea shanties, but I don't remember other types of work songs. He had to be dragged into the room because he was running around doing "host" things. Joe Offer was really there - many of us saw him. :-)

THANK YOU BARRY FINN--ET AL.

So nice to put names with faces, and hear sone great tunes, many of which were "new" to me. I know that I've heard Barry's sword dancing song before, but years of children's doggerel has rinsed it from my mind. A great diversity of song and style, and tons of guitarists with room for everyone. A personal highlight for my wife was listening to people sing into (and out of) Barry's computer. Our one complaint, not enough time--oh and my four year old son didn't like the Bourbon Balls (his loss).

Harpy and I have about the same exuberance level I think.........C'mom, c'mon.....we gotta' know it ALL!!!!

Bottom line is that its so wonderful to hear of freinds enjoying each other's company that it gives everyone a boost just reading the reports. Neat details I like are hearing about SusanA-R......I have enjoyed her for so long here and its easy to believe she "knows the right notes".......just one of those feelings you get about people. Thanks Jeri, you're always great for filling us in and "Spaw really do appreciate it."

And Lucius......Have your son send ME the Bourbon balls!!! Sinsull's I believe?

I just got home from a fantastic time. I met many of my old friends for the first time. The music was great! The song circle was well under way when I arrived around 4:00 PM. It was still going strong though greatly diminished when I staggered off to my bed at 2:30 AM.

I had a lovely time and want to make sure that Barry and Justine feel the appreciation for hosting the party. They did a great job.

And now I have heard Woodchuck's Revenge (Midchuck, Mizchuck, and Bigchuck), Jeri, Bat Goddess, Animaterra, Dan Schotz, John Nolan, Kendall, Lucius, Sinsull, Marymac, Susan A-R, Peg, Barry, Joe Offer, Roger From Baltimore, and several more who I heard but never learned their names.

Also in attendance and performing were Jeff Warner, Bruce MacIntosh, and Dave Hollowell.

I hope this is only the first of many Mudcat gatherings I attend.

I sang, as near as memory serves me, Crossing the Line, Eat Bertha's Mussels, Christmas In The Trenches, Dramamine, Polly Von, Jeanie C, Mary Mac, Beans Taste Fine, and possibly one or two more. I sang along with most of the others.

(And for those who worried about my decision to sleep in my car, I did fine. I had a bed made up in the back of my wagon (two thick foam pads, two sleeping bags, and two pillows). I slept warm and comfortable. It had an aura reminiscent of camping which is one of my favorite activities. There were also several people who expressed concern about the cold. It was not cold. The temperature never got below 25 degrees F and for me that is only chilly. The measure of my comfort is that I slept 6 full hours when I expected to up and gone by 7:00!)

This was an amazing event and enormous fun. I am still in a haze from it. Jeri, Kendall, Batgoddess, Barry, Naemanson, Joe and so many more, some of whom I never did meet formally, It was such a pleasure to meet you all and to share the music and companionship in such a fine setting. I am hoping that we can have a similar gathering in Vermont in the spring sometime. MMario, you should avoid reading this thread, for if you due, your green hue will surely never fade.

Thanks again, Barry & Justine!!! What a lovely party! Great to finally put faces to people I feel are old friends -- and better yet, sto sing with them!

Let's see, Jeri "forgot" (yeah, sure) the words to her parody (from an idea by moi) of "Bay of Biscay", so we started out by singing "Bay of Biscay" instead. I also murdered "Living in Braintree with You In Methuen Is Almost Like Living In Lowell" before the song circle actually got started. Then, what? Tom (Curmudgeon) and I did "Dundee Weaver" and next time round the circle, something, then "Three Score and Ten" and "Backside of Nantucket Point" and left right after I did "Pour Me Another Tequila, Sheila" (well, somebody started cowboy songs and Shel Silverstein was mentioned . . .) Oh, yeah, the one I forgot was "Back and the Sides."

My "person" (thanks, Animaterra!) Curmudgeon/Tom sang "Cold and Raw" and McPherson's Lament (with incredible fiddle & vocal backup!!!) and "The Devil and the Farmer's Wife."

Curmudgeon apologises for having forgotten to sing the "Thanksgiving Round." It would have been perfect.

Gee, Barry, I guess it's too late to come back for brunch.

Not much singing today, but it was good to sit around and chat since nobody did much of that yesterday. I also had a nice argument with John Nolan.

Naemanson, are you reading this? Guess who got to take home the leftover bourbon balls? HAHAHAHAHA!!! (Thanks, Justine!) Now I just have to figure out how to give SINSULL back her tin, which appears to be an antique.

I did Prospect, Providence (written by Keith Marsden), Fire Down Below, Shine Like a Diamond, Oh Sinner Man, and I think that's it.

Spaw, Barry has a Wiemerhienererer...Wiemerheinee..one of those pinkish dogs. Nice dog, but drools a bit. She seemed to love the attention (and the food).

And since I'm so brain dead I haven't said it yet, THANK YOU, FINN FAMILY!!!

Ditto. THANKS BARRY AND JUSTINE AND KIDS (please pardon me, daughter-child-woman because I knew your name until shortly after we left this morning, but am having a name-disorganisation moment, and you did a lovely job with the theme from Romeo and Juliet. Very brave as well)Yes I had a wonderful time, and then discovered that Susan A-R and I have ties in Cyprus, (I know her AFS brother from Famagusta) and through her brother, who is also hosting this year.

I also found out what song circles are like! I've never done this before. Not really being sure what was required, and being up to my eyeballs the last month or two or twelve , I just did what is hardwired, which is mostly stories. And Jeri, the girl is Allashua, and the nasty people under the water are the quallapilliut, so now you know why you couldn't remember the names. I had to write them before I could remember, myself. But it was great fun to put faces to names. However if we ever host one of these things it better be when it's warm, cause our livingroom is half the size of Barry's.

Hugs to everyone I missed!

Cami Su

Sounds like it, Greyeyes. The rum ones I make have sugar, a little cocoa, mashed up vanilla wafers and rum - can't remember anything else. Form them into little balls, and them roll them in stuff - nuts or sugar. I wonder how Frangelico (hazelnut liquer) would work...

Thanks for the names, CamiSu - I never would have remembered them on my own.

I'll second what you said about Barry's daughter (who's name I never did learn - I'm sorry). Not only is she pretty and brave, but patient and polite to annoying adults (me) who asked her to give up the computer. His son also seemed to be very quiet about us taking over the room with the TV (and games). (At that age, I would have raised holy heck.) Barry and Justine, ya got some great kids.

Oh, and by the way, it was Bruce *McIntyre* and Dave *Hallowell*, Naemanson. I meant to make that CX before, but then I got side-tracked in songs. Susan A-R, what was that wonderful song you did standing in the doorway? I loved it, want to hear it again, learn it or something, and I can't even wrap my brain around the subject. (Information overload.)

We could make all sorts of nudge nudge wink wink comments about bourbon balls, but . . . (but actually I think they were all made about 30 years ago). They were delish -- Jeri's just really lucky they have no calories. (Me, too. I certainly did my share on polishing them off!)

Marymac and I left at about 4AM when Barry announced he was going to bed. I never expected a Mudcat man to turn down a night with two Mud felines but both Brett and Kendall did. Just as well. Marymac, like me, does not snore. I am too tired to give a recount. But thoroughly happy and sad that I went and it is over. I will give my version of the tale tomorrow.
To the Finns: THANK YOU. The night was magic. You made something very special happen.
Jeri - the tin is always part of my gift. Enjoy it. And think of me when you fill it with pennies or pens or whatever. The only way I accept them back is when they are filled with something homemade.

Well, "SINS"ull is YOUR nickname! And besides, I don't just snore. My children have compared the sound to large trucks on the highway. And that's from another room!

Jeri, the deal I struck with Sinsull is that you have to fill that tin with rum balls for the next gathering! She just forgot to mention that.

If Bruce and/or Dave sees my goof on their names, I apologize and plead exhaustion.

..two nights before, I visited Sandy and Caroline Paton and had a wonderful time there - Dan and Bonnie Milner showed up that evening, so we all sang for a while after dinner. I'm sure getting a lot of great music on this trip.

Just a quick pop-in. Thanks to Barry and Justine for the get-to-gether. The food and drink was ample, the house warm, and the company excellent. I sang and listened for about 12 hours, from 2 PM to 2 AM. I had a long drive the next day and preferred to sleep in a bed rather than at the wheel.

OH, it was wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!! Most of the time I sat between Midchuck and Kendall. Both have wry and distorted sense of humor so I truly felt at home. Midchuck has written some great parodies. He sang "And My Socks with a Gun" a parody of that moldy bluegrass song "Fox on the Run". It's the story of getting up to see if that sound was really an intruder and being on the "cellar steps in my boxers and my socks with a gun". He parodied Merle Haggard's "Momma Tried" with a song about too much cholesterol called "Momma Fried". And he knows some great cowboy songs. The Woodchucks Revenge sang together, but they seemed less "a group" than just three friends having a good time who just happen to know the same songs.

Well, my boss walked in and it's time to go to work. Whew! What fun I had!!!

Roger's rendition of "Four Little Pigs" was classic. And his "Not Built For Speed" (Title?) was ...what's the word? Painfully close to home? TEE HEE I was late and had to settle for "Socks and a Gun" on CD on the way home. Max might want to play it on the Radio one night - too funny for words. And I missed Kendall's "Lorena" but heard "Phoebe Snow". It hurts to hear him sing it. (For the record: Sinclair is my mother's maiden name: Sin; Sullivan is mine: Sull. The rest is all rumor).Susan A-R did a plaintive "I Never Will Marry" - so pretty. More as it comes back.

Stream of consciousness:
Barry sang a song he had written about a woman lighthouse keeper - true story. Good enough to restart the debate on whether or not true folk music is being written today.

John Nolan sang "The Great Silkie" with some prodding from Kendall. He has a wonderful, masterful voice. AND he plays a banjo. I am totally distracted by men playing banjos! Hope his wife didn't mind the drool.

Kendall,
Fishing for compliments? OK. You made the song so real that it made me wonder if every man has a "Phoebe" tucked away somewhere in his mind. AND I won't listen to Bryan Bowers singing it anymore. His version isn't even second rate. You made my heart ache - that's what I meant by the "pain". Isn't that what you trying to do? GEEZ! From now on the best you'll hear is "Kendall did a nice job on..."
Which reminds me of another nice job: Brett doesn't only sing beautifully, he can cook too. That stew was meant to be eaten on a cold night around a campfire with a bottle of something good being passed around and a banjo player nearby. Brett is a big, fuzzy, handsome man somewhat like a bear. But from the way he carresses his guitar, I would trust him with a newborn baby. If I don't get back to work, I'll get fired. And I haven't even begun to muse about Susan and her fiddle, Jeri and her fiddle (Members of the "Fiddlin Floozies"), CamiSu and her magnificent, commanding tales. And Ms. Woodchuck who is dwarfed by her menfolk but holds her own beautifully. And the children. There are a few tales to be told there too.

It was a great time and I wish i could have stayed longer (arrived around 1 pm on Saturday with Judy and had to leave at 6:30 pm).

Met some great people, ate some great food, heard soem great songs!

Thanks so much to Barry and Justine and their daughter Natalie and their son (I forget his name, sorry) and their awesome DOG for having us to their beautiful home and beings the most hospitable and laid-back hosts we could hope for.

Jeri: thanks! The title of that song, BTW is "I But a Little Girl."

Others I sang: The Wind that Shakes the Barley; Westlin' Winds; and Dark Alan (in Scots Gaelic). Had I stayed longer I would have liked to sing more...

High points for me, musically:

Jeri's singing "Fire Down Below" with all joining in: very powerful!

Kendall's song about Robin Hood...

Allison's song about Winter Solstice...

The song the Woodchucks did about Hank Williams, and the Girly Show at the Tunbridge Fair...

Roger from Baltimore's song about non-anorexic women...

Barry singing just about anything...

Ewan McVicar singing the song with the pig sounds!

I know I missed a lot of great music and will endeavor to stay longer next time!

MMario; I will be in Elmira during the Christmas holidays so let us all know what is happening! If I can borrow the car I may come to Skaneatles, you never know.

I'm still basking from the glow. Another wonderful thing was that the Finn daughter NATALIE and son GABE got along so well with my kids that they were able to last hours longer than I had expected! (This is also why I remember the Finn kids names, with gratitude!!). I still can hear Peg's lovely voice, Susan's enchanting fiddle, Jeri's powerful tones, Kendall's warm gravel, and the thick, rich, warm blending of voices and instruments that rang and rang and followed me all the way home! I shoulda taken someone up on the offer of a motel room floor, I had to leave far too early! Thanks again for an incredible day!

And Joe Offer who goes from shy and formal to devilish in the blink of an eye. And no matter who sings what, three notes into it he is nodding smiling and checking his notes to see if he has the chorus ready. He booms out his own selections and gently harmonizes with everyone else. Had to give him a big hug before I left. He was not the elf I expected and certainly can't be a clone of anyone - there can't be two.

Hey, Sinsull, I wasn't checking notes to see if I knew the choruses - I was checking to see how many Joe Glazer songs we sang...
More people need to know more stuff about Joe Glazer. I went to a museum in Lawrence, Mass., on Sunday and saw a movie about the "Bread and Roses" strike of 1912. the move credited Joe as the "labor troubadour." Good title for him. As far as I recall, the only Glazer song that was sung was "Mills of Marble" - but it was a particularly good song and a song particularly suited for the area where we were.

Gee, I thought they were all Joe Glazer songs.

Seriously, it was a good time, and a pleasure for a newbie mudcatter like myself to see faces and hear voices before getting to know only the names. It was also a pleasure to see some familiar faces.

I was there until about 8 o;clock, and wanted to stay longer, but had to get back to the White Mountains and be rested for the morning.

By the way, someone (Jeri, I think?) asked for the lyrics to one of my songs. I'd be glad to post it, but could you remind me which song it was you wanted the lyrics to?

As best I recall, I sang

Thomas of Winesbury Leave Time In the Old Days I Was Right (I thought I goofed the lyrics on that one, but people told me I was wrong, I was right all along.) Roustabout Survivor Leave A Song in the Darkness

and probably several others which don't pop to mind this moment.

Hands down highlight for me was Barry's song about kids with special needs. I'd love it if you decided to post the lyrics to that one, Barry - although I'll understand if you decide not to. It's a beautiful, haunting song. Thank you for singing it.

Dan

Dan, it was probably the song about the boats & fishermen. I love that song! I don't know as I've heard the title, but my memory is so bad I might have been told several times and spaced it. I'd love to sing it, but don't think I'd remember the tune. Anyhow, they lyrics are great and I'd be happy if I could have them to read. (You can let me know when the CD comes out. :-)

The song Barry did "You Wouldn't Know It To Look At Me," is in Aine's Mudcat Song Book here.

Thanks for the compliments but especially about the cooking, Sins. Unfortunately I overcooked the stew and only provided store bought rolls to eat with it. When I do a stew I prefer to throw together some buttermilk biscuits and eat them dripping with honey and butter.

I would have eaten a lot more of it if there hadn't been turky, lamb, beef, all those yummy whadya-call-'em h'ors d'oevres thingies that Susan A-R brought, fresh veggies, those lemon bars (who brought those - they were very good!), hermits, chocolate chip cookies, double chocolate cookies, salad, bundt cake with some sort of booze in it, and bourbon balls. Now where the heck is Barry?

Who made the wonderful potato dish? Joe was attempting to eat it all himself. I guess he liked it too. I resisted the turkey knowing I would be eating it for another week and a half. Anybody else having a hard time settling in? I can barely sit still at work. And now I am at the computer at home. Maybe a little bourbon and an LP newly arrived from Ebay will help. Sigh!

Hi All & thanks for helping to make the party so wonderful. It went from noon till around 4 in the am & it was a straight blast all the way. Joe Offer, Susan A-R, John Nolan & wife Stephanie stayed over & we were all greeted in the morn to the welcomed return of Nightowl & work friend Lori, Kendall, Jeri, Camisu & Naemanson came in from the cold & the sorry end finally came about 2 that afternoon, a 26 hour party that could've easily stretched to 48 hrs if my family & I could have our way about it. My only regret (aside from not having much of a voice to start off with) was Ewan had to head off a bit early & my hosting responsibilities kept me from having more that a brief hello with him (Ewan, thanks for the gifts, your book was most a interesting insite to the early folk days of Glasgow). I can't say enough how much of a treat it was to host this, to have those both close by & those that traveled quite a distance play & sing. I can't begin to list off all the highlights & bright spots way to many & I think most of that ground has been covered already (good thing too with my memory, I be leaving out huge gaps). Thanks again for helping to make this happen, Barry

Made it home safe and sound. Car refused to start, on account of Glasgow Rain - much cursing ensued. Got a few hours sleep, and feeling more human now.
It was brilliant to visit with you all [y'all]. Tasty and yeasty singing from and with people that love song. A reminder of what got me into singing in the first place. Debra Cowan and I had to leave so early, at 7pm, but before we went it was a privilege to sing All The Tunes In The World into the ether. "Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup" etc.
Many thanks to Debra for driving me, and for the chance for us to sing together on the Friday night.
Multiple thanks to Animaterra for hospitality, and asking me to sing in her school on the Friday. Get there if you can folks, it's the singingest school I ever saw, a joy to hear and see.
Thank you and thank you and thank you again to Barry and family for hosting such a fine event.
To everyone - it was a charge to see you and be with you, and most of all sing with you.

What a Wonderful party!! I was up until 4 a.m. singing and talking and eating and drinking good beer. Highlights for me were: Your Stuff Owns You (who sang that??) Dan's rendition of I Was Right (could you post that please?) Joe Offer actually singing that woderawful Come on Over to Our House, Sinsull's great collection of tear jerkers, Bat Goddess (everything) the hilarious ride down with the woodchucks (striding into a craft fair, demanding our lamb from CamiSu) The Lamb, the bourbon balls, and much more.

Well, now...I would never use this forum for personal business promotion, I'm sure none of us would, but since you did ask...

Loose in the Hills (1996) and Fill One Room (1999) are each available either as CD or cassette.

Send $15 per CD or $10 per cassette to:

Woodchucks' Revenge
c/o Peter and Kristina Cady
P. O. Box 22
Pittsford, VT 05763

Between now and Christmas, we are giving a bulk discount - If you order more than one item at a time, take $2 off the price of each item after the first - i. e. if you bought both CDs, it would be $15 for the first and $13 for the second, $28 total. For orders from Mudcatters, we will absorb the usual shipping and handling charge.

If anyone wants playlists for the two recordings, or has any other questions, PM me at your leisure.

Now, CamiSu: How much was the bribe we agreed on?

Yeah, Jeri and I have been know to get together upon occasion. As a matter of fact, I really have to stop 'Catting around and call her about a ride to The Press Room this afternoon.

Speaking of The Press Room (in Portsmouth, NH), the Angel Band (part of the regulars) has a gig so the session should be almost all singing, especially if Curmudgeon has anything to say about it. And we're all in good voice. So, if anyone wants to join us, tonight might be a pretty good time (Barry? Brett?).

We start about 4:30 and wrap up just before 9:00pm.

We sit around a couple pushed together tables in the back, try not to step on each other's songs, and stay out of the way of the waitresses. No mikes. If we know it, we all join in. Curmudgeon's the boss man.

The session is sort of a legal requirement. The Press Room has a "ballroom" liquor license, which means its liquor license isn't tied to serving food, as most NH establishments must. (It does, though, and the food is very good.) But The Press Room has to have entertainment from opening til closing. The Friday bit started (actually on tuesday) with Curmudgeon by himself, armed only with a concertina and guitar. Over the years, it's turned into whatever it is it's turned into. It can be very crowded. It can be very loud (either "listeners" or musicians or both). It can be absolute magic. Or anything in between.

Tonight most of the hard core instrumentalists (and 2 singers) have a gig and won't be there, so we can concentrate on singing (which is actually what the audience prefers, anyway).

We look forward to singing with anyone who cares to join us!

Bat Goddess

So good to get on! Allison, I'm game for something in January. (Just spent a VERY frustrating day at the hospital with my brother who is haveing gall bladder problems... The emergency room was VERY busy so he spent the whole day lying around in more or less pain.) This time I'll come for the whole party.

Pardon, I'm feeling in need of a hug or two. I missed a friend's memorial service as well today, so I'm a bit weepy as well.

Cami Su

Allison, tell us as soon as you settle on a date so we can plan.

Us Woodchucks want to do something similiar, but not until we can play outdoors and annoy the neighbors, and people can camp in the back yard, and no one will get run off the road by skiers while driving across VT in a blizzard...

Peter.

Hugs, CamiSue. And there's been too many memorial services lately. Your ginger jam is lovely, BTW. It's been a reflective day here, too. I wrote my Yuletide letter and got weepy over what I left out. Sigh. But it's wonderful having the Mudcat community closeby.

Curmudgeon and I usually have a Sunday-of-Memorial-Day-Weekend Tune-It-Or-Die party and Ladyslipper Festival(in Nottingham, NH) but he says it's too early to mention it, so I won't.

I guess I won't mention, then, that I am already trying to program the Sunday-of-Memorial-Day-Weekend Tune-It-Or-Die party and Ladyslipper Festival into my schedule.

Allison, dates to avoid for January would include January 13. That is the January Mocha Cafe. The featured performers will be Bruce MacIntyre and David Hallowell. Ya'll come by now, ye'hear?

Peg, I checked SuperSearch and the Web and couldn't find lyrics for "I But a Little Girl." The Digital Tradition has lots of Bob Franke songs, but not this one.
My copy of his "Brief Histories" CD doesn't have a lyrics sheet. I can transcribe it if you can't, but it would be really nice if you could post the song.
Pretty please?
You sure sang it nicely.

Ladies and gentlemen, the votes are in for Peg to post the song "I But a Little Girl." There are now two votes for her to post it with no dissension.

Wait, Governor Bush is standing firm and VP Gore is asking for a recount.

The recount shows that there are still two votes for and none against, though Mr. Bush has stated that the original machine vote.....

Add my vote for Peg to post the words! I still haven't talked to the mister yet; we had to split ourselves and go to two different festive events yesterday.

BTW, I was at the cd release party of a wonderful cd, "Toward Winter", by Alouette Iselin and Melanie Everard. Alouette wrote the Solstice song I sang in Derry, which is why I mention it on this thread. That song is not on this cd, but several other wonderful Christmas and Solstice songs are. It's been featured on WEVO's Folk Show at least once, and I'm happy to be a member of the background vocals- plus they used my arrangement of another of Alouette's songs on the cd, so I'm tickled pink!

I went websnooping looking for the lyrics to "I, But a Little Girl," because I sort of remembered Bob Franke lyrics out there somewhere. I didn't find them, but I DID find a page where you can listen to performances from this year's Kerrville Folk Festival, including Bob Franke. (In Real Audio or Windows Media) I don't know if the songs there. I just started listening, and it's an entire performance, complete with tuning and talk. (And Tom Russell's on there too - he's next.)

Make my mother post them - we've got the lyrics on the liner notes from Kallet, Epstien and Ciccone's album, Angels in Daring. I would, but you know, I'm not there.

Great recording of that song. Makes me all shivery.

okay okay, here it si, quitcher cryin'! ;) sorry it took me so long, friends, this is an autumn song fir me and I have been shifting into winter mode...

BTW I hope to record this song (and others) on a CD this spring and am seeking musicians to play...so if anyone comes up with a nice, spooky yet simple guitar accompaniment to this, let's talk!

peg

I But a Little Girl

I know it is a wicked thing in such a fashion for to sing
with no regard for God nor king, and I but a little girl
But evil shapes do bid my tongue, great judges and divines among,
to say things strange for one so young, for I'm but a little girl.

My friends and I thought little harm to go to Reverend Parris' farm
our secret fortunes for to charm, we being but little girls
But Betty's eyes did roll about, and Abigail began to shout
and so the devil found us out, and shapes began to swirl.

Unholy shapes of girls and men, and women to our torment then
pronounced us damned and damned again, we being but little girls
what recourse had we but to cry, and name each shape as it flew by
to hold us in the evil eye and the curse of little girls.

And so we cried and cried aloud, the names of mighty men and proud
and haughty women in a crowd, we being but little girls
and mothers, fathers, children dear, did gather round these names to hear
and how the crowd began to fear the namings of little girls.

Then learned men from near and far did drag their prisoners to the bar
examined for the witch's scar, and the curse of little girls
and witch and wizard once confessed cried out their comrades all unblessed
and all the world brought to the test at the whims of little girls.

And you, thought safe within your bed, you send your shape about my head
tomorrow you shall lie in dread of the hearts of little girls
and the justice of the holy court did show his terror of our sport
and the powers of the world resort to the games of little girls.

And the evil that attacks my heart in pride of power got its start
You lie, you say you have no part in the sins of little girls
The prison's full, the gallows moan, the old man crushed beneath the stones
are not the work of mine alone, for I'm but a little girl.

(I learned this from the singing of someone who is somewhat famous for getting lyrics slightly incorrect and I have heard several versions of some of the ending phrases such as "whims of little girls," "sins of lg," etc. so I am not sure this is entirely accurate. This is however the version I sing...)^^

Thanks a lot, Peg. Your typing gave me a huge head start on my transcription from the Franke recording. Looks like you have the song down almost exactly, but here's what I get from the recording.

Sorry I haven't lurked in these parts for awhile. No, I don't have a CD out yet, although I'm told it's about time for one, and I agree. The trick is funding the whole thing. I did put out a tape about ten years ago called The Road to Somewhere Else. You may be able to find it in a few places. If anyone

I'll post the lyrics to "In the Old Days" (the song about boats and fisherman) as soon as I figured out how to work the HTML breaks. I'm afraid I seem to have become a bit of a luddite.

Dan, all you have to do is type <br> at the end of each line. Double spacing works between verses, or type the above 2 times and don't leave any space.
