*grumpity-grump* tried for the 5th time...it STILL bombs my PC and will NOT finish installing,,,I KNOW there is some incompatible program or something keep it out, but it's own install program is not capable of seeing this and just hangs after installing icons and writing to the registry...

It gives me errors in some registry entry and just grinds......

Problems, P?

We had several 'outsiders' in the other night, but they were very impressed and joined in according to our 'rules', as it were.

When I was in there, there was a chap who played loud electric blues on guitar, but he wanted every other turn.

It got to be a little much. Maybe other people like loud electric blues more than I do.

Peter.

Midchuck, it is up to others where they go but I have tried to point this one out before but I will try again:

In most PalTalk music rooms, the general practice is for people to put their hand up to sing. If you have one person that wants to do a song and asks, as this chap did, or puts thier hand up, it is very difficult for whoever is assuming the role of Admin to say "sorry it's not your turn, who wants to go next?" especially when it is not clear who does and dosn't want to sing let alone even know that anyone is ready to sing (and the Mudcat room has very long periods of silence).

If you want to start a private room, I wish you well but I have very much enjoyed the majority of the "outsiders" that have entered this room and most have played by "our rules" but the answer to this problem when it occurs is simple in a public room. If someone seems to be taking the lions share of the singing, all it needs is the Admin to be given some indication by the hand (or even in a text message - public or private) that they wish to do something and songs can then be shared out evenly.

Jon

Even he admitted that to us Midchuck, and did ask permission to play (he was very good too, reminded me of Max). Like you Peter, I'm not a big fan of electric blues; but would rather listen to it than silence. If anyone objects to a style of music, or excessive turn taking, they should raise the issue with the room admin; that is why we have an admin in charge of the room. When I came in last night there was no-one running the room. From experience, not everyone who comes in to join us will be as pleasant as those we had last night. You may have to silence someone who is abusive, and ask them to leave, or bounce them off; thats why I signed on as admin. I strongly recommend that anyone opening the room take on this responsibility and control the input from non Mudcatters. Good session, great music, and some new pals. Yours, Aye. Dave

Yes Dave, I think there should always be 1 Mudcatter in the room who is willing to take on these Admin responsibilities. If the person opening the room is not comfortable with this role, they can always pass onto another Mudcatter later. Also, if the current Admin leaves, someone else should take on that role.

Having someone with the @ in front of their name should let us all know who to turn to if there is a problem and should also let "outsiders" know that there is someone with athority in the room.

Jon

Hi folks, Sorry Peter I've got to say I'm with Dave and Jon on this one. It's not my favourite music either but the guy was playing live, he seemed to be good at what he was doing, and he was polite. Last night and on Friday were two great nights (my computer probs aside), the girl who reluctantly sang two verses of Amazing Grace was absolutely amazing. We've also foun new guys like tpicker who played some lovely accoustic blues and KNAH who sat quietly enjoying the music for about ane and a half hours and then sand a country blues song for us. I had major doubts about the openness of Paltalk at first but now I fully appreciate the new recruits that we're finding.
P.S. When you on Noreen, it's ages since I've seen you.

All the best

Nynia

I never said the guy wasn't good at what he did. He was. Even I, who isn't crazy about that stuff, could tell that.

I'd have the same objection if it had been Emmylou Harris singing Tom Russell, Ian Tyson, and Steve Earle songs with Norman Blake and Tony Rice playing backup for her - if it was supposed to be a round robin and not a concert.

This "hand up" thing seems to be flawed. A person can hit the "hand up" symbol as soon as he's finished singing, and guarantee himself getting to do every other song. It just seems like some oversight is needed, unless there are only a few people there and they all accept the idea of a rotation. It would seem, in theory, that once a person has sung, he ought not to again if anyone else wants to, who hasn't sung since the first person sung last. If that syntax makes any sense. On rereading it, I'm not sure it does.

Peter.

The hand-raising bit is new to us. The guy on the electric guitar was polite and followed the rules. I understand electric instruments aren't some folks' cup of tea, but he was playing blues. I have a feeling he easily could have whipped into a frenzied metal solo, but he didn't.

The problem is (and has been) that it's sometimes like pulling teeth to get people to sing or play. We can't blame a person who winds up doing a lot of tunes because others don't jump in.

The concept is you can put your hand up PRIOR to their finishing....but they can't - because they've got a mike up there...

and yes, some people are going to go more often, but it's NOT their fault other people are shyer. That's part of the reason mudcat on HearMe and on Paltalk has such long silences...everyone seems to be afraid of "hogging" the mike. But if no one else is going, it isn't mike hogging - it's filling dead air.

Actually, I opened the room originally and was in as administrator, which Dave may not have noticed. It is the custom in the other PalTalk rooms to raise the hand and it seems to me that we should be prepared to respect that and perhaps hew to the custom a bit more seriously ourselves. Certainly the folks who were through last night while I was there were polite and willing to go by the rules. We do tend to chat for periods of time before someone decides to sing, which I don't think happens as much in other PT rooms. The concert room is available as an alternative for any who feel like keeping it to Mudcatters. The admin key is 5736.
Sandy

OK, so if the current rules don't make things more fair, can we change them and publicize it somewhere? Ask people in turn, and give them a chance to pass? (Just go down the list - is that what you meant, Peter?)

I suspect our guitar player would have done just as much playing, but I'm occasionally wrong ;-)...

Bigchuck you must have lost your admin sign because no-one had one up when I came in. If you go out and come back in you lose it and have to re-register as admin. Anyway, I did'nt mean to sound bossy or in charge. Yours, Aye. Dave

When I came in, Dave was the only administrator. (I believe it's agreed there should only be one at a time, even if it's possible to have more.)

Dave, you did a fine job.

Obviously, PalTalk creates a 'new' environment for those of us who were used to HearMe, since we're now residing in a very public place as opposed to one that was public but relatively isolated. We'll have to learn to deal with that. and I think we're doing a reasonably good job of it. I agree with those who are in favor of keeping it open (not pw protected). Yes, we'll have mike hogs who aren't Mudcatters from time to time, but I've heard some pretty good music I wouldn't have heard on HearMe, too.

One point: I don't think one person having a hand up precludes someone else from raising theirs. If a performer raises his/her hand immediately upon finishing and there are other hands raised or someone else quickly raises theirs, the room administrator would be perfectly fair in saying to the mike hog that others wanted a chance. And, if nobody is willing to do so and the mike hog keeps performing, at least we have some background music for our text chat.

I'd hope that we don't split into two camps over this. It seems to me that the Song Circle room gets more vibrant when the number of participants gets up to around five. At that number and above, there usually seems to be a good mix of those willing to perform and 'just listeners.' If we start dividing ourselves into two or more rooms, I believe we run the risk of diluting participation. Besides, I'd hate to miss something that was happening in one room while I was in the other. Just selfish that way, I guess.

It has been my experience with some of the other rooms that the admin person becomes a moderater, letting people know of the order of singers.... some even have a way of posting in the bar just above the text chat area, that way people can look and see who is next and when their turn is....

I say, if no-one else is singing, and someone wants to do a couple of songs close together, no problem, as long as time is given for others to participate... the moderator could say...... "ok , no-one else is ready, go again ***" or something like that......

I do not like the karaoke nature of the other rooms and hope that ours will stay 'live' in all accounts......

gidday folks

here's my thoughts on the matter

We should stay totally public meanwhile.

We should perhaps adopt the "hand up" approach either as soon as a 'stranger' arrives and/or when there are more than just a few of us in the room {5 or 6 and more}

The Admin should keep a track of any one "hogging the mike at the expense of others and ajust the order accordingly .....That's what admin is surely

Admin is also responsible for "talking" privately with record players and karaoke artists to tell them that's not how we do it, and ultimately he can "fix" them

I've been variously entertained and amused by our 'visitors' and look forward to having many more

Jack

Dave, I did not leave the room at all, and I had the @ symbol all night on my screen. Maybe each new admin sign in supersedes the previous one? Anyway, you did a fine job of managing things. I ain't complaining.
