hi...i've never posted a message before, but as an amateur collector of traditional songs, your database has always been tremendously helpful to me. there is a song i heard on the radio several years ago (on fiona ritchie's "thistle and shamrock," on npr) i believe it begins like this--

rose, rose, rose, rose will i ever see thee wed? i will marry at your will, sire, at your will

it's sung in a round, to a tune that resembles "hey, ho, nobody's home." i think there are other verses, but i haven't been able to find the lyrics in your database, and i haven't been able to find a recording of it anywhere. if anybody knows where i might find all the lyrics, and a cd, i would be very grateful

thanx caroline

I was wrong, Kate does not know anymore, but I found this:

Rose

(can also be sung as a round)
Rose, Rose, Rose, Rose
Will I ever see thee wed?
I will marry at thy will, Sire
At they will

Ding, dong, ding, dong
Wedding bells on an April morn
Carve your name on a moss covered stone
On a moss covered stone

Little bird
Fly away High up on a mountaintop
On this sad day

from:http://www.guidezone.skl.com/s6_22.htm

And this:

AMERICA

America, America,
Let us tell you how we feel.
You have given us your riches,
We love you still.

LOVE

Love, love, love, love,

The gospel of the world is love.

Love thy neighbor as thy brother,

Love, love, love.

FRIENDS

Friends, friends, friends, friends,

Friends that make the world go round.

Old friends, new friends, all are true friends,

Friends, friends, friends

Which are obviously new verses, from:

Minstrels of Mayhem also do this as a round, with similar lyrics

If you were to use the very useful "Digitrad and Forum Search", available on the main Forum page, you would find several past discussions that touch on this song.  I typed in rose rose, and found, in addition to the DT entry and other passing references,  "Rose, Rose" round: more verses?

I only use that when the other one's broken.  I was thrilled when Max put in the new search engine, and advertise it regularly.  It does tend to return duplicate (sometimes triplicate) references, but you get so much more...

In the Kentucky mountains in the 1930s we sang: Rose, rose, rose, rose, Shall I ever see thee red? Aye, marry, that thou wilt, If thou but stay.

In recent years, I used the melody (as many others have!) for my song, "The Peace Round," which you may have heard.

We sang Rose with two verses simutaneously:

Rose, Rose, Rose, Rose
Will I ever see thee wed?
I will marry at thy will sire
At thy will

I won't be my father's Jack
I won't be my mother's Jill
But I will lead a fiddler's life
And fiddle e're I will

Does "I won't be my father's jack" have the same melody as "rose"?

I've never heard/learned Jack and have been wondering how it goes for several years. This is the first time I've seen in coupled with Rose.

Will I ever see thee wed?
I will marry at they will, sire,
At thy will.
