Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumpers Stickers - III From: Plume Date: 07 Jan 01 - 06:59 PM My ten year old would like to see a bumper sticker that reads: Honk If You Locked Your Keys In Your Car. He swears he made it up. In the days when I was runnining a small theatre company and had little time for anything else I used to drive a car with the altered bumper sticker: Enjoy Dress Rehearsal, This Is Not a Life. |

Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumpers Stickers - III From: Bill D Date: 07 Jan 01 - 07:54 PM I own 2 copise of a bumper sticker which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency printed and gave away....briefly....about 1977 or so, before they decided it was not politically a good idea. It was during the fuel shortage and 55 MPH speed limit days, and it said "Driving 55 is chic, driving 75 is Sheik" |

Subject: Fish and their evolutionary scions From: Haruo Date: 09 Jan 01 - 10:20 PM A variation on the bumper sticker is the fish, or ICQUS, and its progeny (the classic one being the "Darwin Fish", which have become the champions of "Creation Science" and "Darwinian Evolution" respectively. The symbolism is rooted in the ancient Christian use of the fish as a "secret" symbol, based on the fact that the Greek word for "FISH", ICQUS, is an acronym for the Greek phrase meaning "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Saviour". At least in the USA these little metallic statements on the boots of folks' second-hand cars (the modern meaning of the fish is "a previous owner of this car was an evangelical Christian") have spawned a host of take-offs, some quite clever. My personal favorite, though I'm a Baptist, is the "Gefilte Fish", whose likeness you can see at my (Esperanto of course) Gefilte Fish Recipe page. A number of other variants can be seen at my The Fish and Its Offspring page. Among those I've not yet put up are versions incorporating UFOs and the Olympic Rings. And some atheistic or agnostic website (I've forgotten which one) has cute little Jesus fish animated GIF that evolves before your very eyes into its Darwinian reflex. Liland |

Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumpers Stickers - III From: Haruo Date: 09 Jan 01 - 11:01 PM I had a T-shirt once that said LINGUISTS do it with their TONGUES. Would've made a nice bumper sticker, but I wore it on my chest. In fact, in my photo album (yeah, I know, that's French, not Esperanto; sorry!) I'm wearing it in the one where my head is inside a pumpkin. Oh no! It's not there! Where'd it go?! Ah; here. (My last drunken Hallowe'en, 1983. At Miya's, the sushi bar that cost me my marriage and house.) Liland |

Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumpers Stickers - III From: Elise Date: 10 Jan 01 - 02:09 AM I have one on my doumbek case that says "Please don't tell my mother I'm a bellydancer. She thinks I'm a weekend madam in a whorehouse." I couldn't put anything on my car that said whorehouse, hence the drum case. I used to have a car with a license plate that said 2wat657. I don't think the DMV liked me. |

Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumpers Stickers - III From: Bill D Date: 10 Jan 01 - 12:37 PM a bit 'topical' for REAL bumper sticker status, but I'd love to see one of the headline in todays Op-ed page in the Washington Post, in which the author questions the necessity of adding a trip to an ancient city in the Andes to a senate intelligence committee's 'fact finding' junket thru S. America....

Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumpers Stickers - III From: GUEST,guestguestguestguest(intruder)guest Date: 10 Jan 01 - 02:24 PM from what i've been told by an inhabitant thereof, the southern part of the state of New Hampshire (ham-pshyeya) is being infested (his word) by former inhabitants of Massachusetts, who happen to favor gun control... the New Hampshire response has been a bumper sticker that reads... My gun has killed less people than Ted Kennedy's Car. i like it |
Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumpers Stickers - III From: mousethief Date: 10 Jan 01 - 02:49 PM That figures, don't it? It should be "fewer people than Kennedy's car" not "less...". Alex |
Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumpers Stickers - III From: Elise Date: 10 Jan 01 - 03:04 PM Alex, that reminds me of one I often see in Hayward (the armpit of California)that reads "I wonder if you'd drive better if that phone was up your ass". I agree with the sentiment, but it's so like Haywardians to get the grammer wrong and stick it on their cars anyway! (It should be "were up your ass"). Kat, say it out loud, two, wat. (The 657 is incidental). |
Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumpers Stickers - III From: mousethief Date: 10 Jan 01 - 03:16 PM Elise, That's the most angry of the "hang up and drive" bumper stickers. I wonder if there's one that's truly a knee-slapper? I've seen oodles but they're all variations on "your car is not a phone booth you twit" -- still looking for a real ringer. Alex |

Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumpers Stickers - III From: Elise Date: 10 Jan 01 - 06:05 PM Kat, I just thought it was amusing that the DMV would give me a liscence plate that said twat. It's too much to ask of them that the numbers go with it. I was kinda hoping for 2wat696. |
Subject: RE: BS: Funny Bumpers Stickers - III From: katlaughing Date: 10 Jan 01 - 06:57 PM OH! I am sorry, Elise, I read your first posting about it all wrong! I thought the DMV didn't like you because you meant you'd ordered it to say that, so I figured the numbers had to have some significance, too, though I wasn't sure why you'd want one that said "twat!" Whew! Glad that was cleared up!**BG** Thanks! |
