Subject: EARTHQUAKE IN New York City! Newsflash!
From: InOBU
Date: 17 Jan 01 - 11:32 AM

This morning at 7am, a small earth quake, centered in New York Harbour rocked the town. No damage was reported, though mudcaters interested can email me for a down load of a candle - now at a dizzying 10 degree angle, from the terrible rumbling of the lower east side of Manhattan.
In thanks for our safe deleverence, the band Sorcha Dorcha will perform a concert of thanks and salvation at the People's Voce Cafe, Feb 10, - the Workman's Circle 45 E. 33rd Street between Park and Madison, with Ray Collins. Contributions (addmission actually) will go to releive the poverty inflicted on the band in the terrible days leading up to the earthquake. For more information click on the post - "From the greatest folk band in history."
Still shaking - Larry

I was awake and functioning at 7AM. Felt nothing. Last one found me on my feet and running before I was awake. Larry - sure you didn't just fall out of bed???

Feb. 10 is Annamill's party. Damn. If it snows and I am homebound, I'll be there, Larry.

Dear Scarpi - it was such a small rumble, the bodhrans did not fall off the wall. We have two faults in New York, as small one under the harbour and a big one at 125th Street, lucky for us, it was the little one this morning. NOTHING like Iceland, thank God!
Now Spaw, thank you and I am humbled by the compliment. We are so poor we would flog anything. But I must clear up a gross inacuracy. the post to find out more info should read "From the greatest folk band of all time

"
Again, in great humility

Get out of there. Head for the country. It's all those alligators that the tourists have brought back from Florida and then flushed into the sewers.
They are moving!
They're coming to destroy the city!

Spaw farting is no joke:-)

Experienced a 4.4 aftershock when in San Diego in '94. Being over a hundred miles from the epicentre it wasn't that strong. Interesting sensation all the same.

MMario - quiet right. It is now reported at 2.4 and located not in the harbour, but under Long Island City. This might be why it was so mild in Manhatten, Long Island is not on our little granit shelf. Long Island is the rubble pushed into the sea from the passing of the last glacher. I've experienced 2 earthquakes. One in Kennebunkport, Maine in 1977 or '78 (I was on the 2nd floor of a very old house and thought the furnace was blowing up) and one while standing around at a friend's (well, Curmudgeon's ex-wife) house in Nottingham, NH. Both rated only miniscule newspaper mention. New England actually is in the same class zone as southern California; it's just not that active. I've felt other small trembles that haven't made a mention in the paper.

Underground reports from eco-activists in Cincinatti report some degree of success with their initial efforts at bio-degradable Cockroach control. Rumor has it that their "secret" repellant is actually concentrated "'spaw'gas", produced somewhere in Ohio, but group spokespeople refuse to either confirm or deny the rumor. They seem delighted to have run many roaches out of their fair city, but aerial observations suggest the fleeing roaches have headed north-northeastward in huge whirring clouds. There has been speculation by some observers that the FRDF (Flying Roach Density Factor) is of sufficient magnitude that slight earth tremors may resuly whever they clads actully settle to earth.

The crowd who go to the PVC concerts are the progressive few, so on a serrious note, I know they are already in gear, and it will be one of the many topics spoken from the stage and among the tables.

Yikes!

HOT OFF THE WIRES! The tremors, felt from new Jersey to Long Island, has been finally located (no kidding) the epicenter is the UPPER EAST SIDE! Very close to 45 East 33rd Street where the Sorcha Dorcha Earthquake Relief (Aren't we relieved it was a tiny earthquake) Concert will be held on Feb 10 at the People's Voice Network. As previously stated, prior to the earthquake, the uncertainty of living in the earthquake zone, has rendered the band members poor and in need (for most of em) of strong drink. So, help us get over these terrible times... come here the band that Ted Cleary said of... "Hey, Larry, caught your band last night - they didn't suck!"

Mousethief - I have a two day old headache. Maybe it's a warning of quakes to come. Or just plain post holiday grumps. I am aching for some sunshine. And yes - I am the lady who tosses soft pretzels to the rats on the subway tracks. Kind of like feeding the ducks in the park.

Keven (McGrath of Harlow), get a sense of proportion. That El Salvador thing's only destroyed the homes of 100,000 people. Not likely to have been noticed in the Big Apple.

Hi Fionn:
Not really the case. New York is the center of the progressive community in the United States. In the case of disasters there is always a remarkable responce, not only from the left, but eliments of the New york City fire department go around the world as experts in extracting people from dangerous wreakage. Fact is, in profoundly in the Irish humor, the safe that falls next to you is funny. As it turns out now, the tremmer was in our big fault, the 125th street fault, which may be a God send, in that it is good to let off a bit of pressure every once and awhile... in point of fact, thouse of us who spend the majority of their working lives, working for social justice, also have to let off a bit of pressure every once and awhile, and there is an appropriate phrase for them that can't take a joke. I may take this moment to remind some fellow travellers, that Nelson Mandella credits the New York City Council action to institute an ecconomic boycott - coming form a city ecconomy the equal of many nations, as the first world responce that shook aparthide in South Africa.
Smile every once and awhile, Spaw will tell you, your face wont crack.
Larry

Some of you may remember a few days ago the wee story about me mum's ears ringing so badly my wife and I took her to hospital. Well, for about two days before the rummbler, she had a huge headache and ringing in her ears. About 7:45 am, when the trembler happened, her headache and ear ringing began to go away rapidly. Now, in light of storries of varrious beings getting ansy before earthquakes, next time the old girl's ears start ringing, in stead of taking mum to hospital, I think I'll take her, and Genie WAY out of town and call the emergency management folks!

Hey, Larry, look like your mum's got a whole new career ahead of her, rent her out as an early warning system to California, Japan etc and you can retire and play music full-time. You'd probably have to let her have a percentage though, mothers are funny about that sort of thing! "Don't worry, Mum, you'll LOVE it on the San Andreas fault...."
RtS (If my own mum was alive she'd clip me round the ear for flippancy -I get tinnitus in one ear [too many clips round it!] but we've not had an earthquake in Ascot yet!)

How is she with floods & mud slides? Maybe there is an association between those events and episodes of discontinence.

Well Roger and Bonny: As my old friend in Wiltshire is fond of me calling her, My own little bundle of resentment, would probubly keep it to herself if she knew an earthquake was coming, and frown at the wreckage and say, "hmmm - they'd not have listened to me anyway!"
Old mum's get like that...

Having lived in San Bernardino in the past,( San Andreas fault goes right through it), I've experienced a fair number of quakes. Most exciting one was the Sylmar quake in '70?. My sister and brother-in-law had just gotten married and were living with me.I slept on a roll-away bed on a bare hardwood floor. When the quake hit, I grabbed the edges of the bed and hung on.I think I bounced off all 4 walls several times. When it was all over I could hear the two of them talking and laughing nervously in their room.My loud comment to them was, " I know you guys are newlyweds, but that was ridiculous."

Well, the old girl said, the other day, the ear ringing isn't conected to the rumbling, she had a bout of it last night and this morning. Turns out there were two small aftershocks, so small they were under the numerical scale, and only felt around the upper east side. What ears!
