Subject: Traditional music open mic From: Suffet Date: 31 May 01 - 08:43 PM Attention all blues, ragtime, bluegrass, old-timey, Cajun, Zydeco, Celtic, Calypso, Gospel, Appalachian, western swing, and other TRADITIONAL musicians! The New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club cordially invites you to participate in our monthly traditional music open microphone, held the third Wednesday of each month. Next session: June 20, 2001. Venue: The Triad Lounge 158 West 72nd Street, near Broadway New York City Sessions run from 7:00 to 9:45 PM and begin PROMPTLY! Sign-up starts at 6:45 PM. Admission is $5. Purchase of 2 drinks is expected. Everyone must pay, performer or not. Space includes a stage, a sound system, wait staff, and a bartender. Stage time: 2 songs or 8 minutes, whichever come first. If you are not one of the first 15 to sign up, you get to do only 1 song or 4 minutes, so get there on time! While we bill this as a traditional music open microphone, please feel free to perform whatever music you wish to do, including contemporary singer-songwriter material. We are very accepting. And if you do show up at the monthly open mic, there is a better than even chance Guest KAS will be sitting at the first table. On June 5, the Johnson Girls will be performing at the Whitman Gallery at 211 Water Street. After that date the concerts will be on board the ship Peking. Admission is only $3. Other concerts are: June 12 Wharf Rats; June 19 Bonnie & Dan Milner; June 26 Spindrift; July 10 Mark Maniak; July 17 Fulton Ferry Amblers; July 24 Jerry Epstein; July 31 Anne Price. It's great to hear sea music in an authentic historical setting, and the music is fabulous, with alot of audience participation on shanties and choruses. South Street Seaport has a beautiful view of the water and the NY skyline, and great shopping and food too. |

If you get there after 8 o'clock the chances are you'll be frozen out all together. So if you plan to perform, be there on time. The emcee is a bit gruff at times, but he is essentially a good guy, and he won't take his own turn until last. You'll be impressed by the musicianship, almost always very high quality for an open mic. On a good night, the pros will turn out in force. For example, I have seen Ken Schatz (Mudcatter KAS) at this open mic. |

More polka than Pennsylvania, more Arabic music than Michigan, more bomba y pleña than Puerto Rico. If you sit at the bar about 10 feet away you need only buy 1 drink. Anyway, the 2 drink minimum has not been consistently enforced, as the wait staff have been making their rounds only once. The patron has to take the initiative for the second drink. Take that as you will. The $5 admission and the drink purchase are not just so you can do 2 songs and go home. They are so you can have the pleasure of hearing other people do their 2 songs as well. Some really top notch musicians show up at these trad music open microphones. For example, among the performers I have heard within the past year has been Heather Wood, the surviving member of the Young Tradition. Also, the $5 and drink purchase lets you stay past 10 PM to hear the Triad's regularly booked acts, which begin at that hour and continue until about 2 AM. All together that's no worse than most places in Manhattan, and it's a better deal than many offer. The trad music open microphone for November 2001 will be on the 21st. Please note that New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club also sponsors many activities in and around New York City where people can perform for free.
