Liz the squek, The same thing happened Packenham after the battle of New Orleans. His body was placed in a barrel of Rum/Brandy or whatever and shipped home to be buried, although he was English I believe he was buried in the family estate somewhere in Ireland. Even to this day there is a popular drink around New Orleans known as Packenham's punch. What a waste of good drink.

Dear Liz The Squeak.

It was, I believe, brandy in the cask that Nelson was supposedly put, to bring his body home for a proper funeral. The story goes that some of his crew got wind of this and bore a hole in the barrel to get at the brandy. With the result, it was just Admiral Nelson in the barrel by the time it arrived home.

Grog is rum and water, traditional drink of the Navy. Todays' useless fact although connected with music in a way..... When they brought Nelson's body back from Trafalgar, they put him in a barrel of rum to stop him 'going off', but didn't tell anyone. Sailors used to creep up to the rum barrel, slip a knife between the boards, twist and slurp up what trickled out.... hence the phrase 'a drop of Nelson's blood'.....

At least I think it was rum, it could have been brandy, but I'm pretty sure it was rum.

THE PUB WITH NO BEER is apparently somewhat factual - the link is to the lyrics, but a Forum Search will show several threads dedicated to discussing it. OH FOR ME GROG (2) is another 'classic' drinking song - quite common amongst bands playing that sort of tune. Again, looking in the SuperSearch will result in several threads that discuss it.

Fun tunes though. Upshot is that "Pub" is recent, "Grog", I believe, is pretty much just considered 'traditional'.

An English song, of course, though popularised relatively recently in Ireland.  "Noggin" is a corruption of the original "Nobby".  (As in "nobby hat").

I remember a health campaign a few years ago which centred round the slogan "Maintain a sensible alcohol level" or something like that. I aim for that generally, though I might need topping up from time to time.

Any good song about drinking is going to be an Irish song before it's done, no matter where it comes from.

Two good ones, for different moods - Finnegan's Wake and The Parting Glass. And if you put those titles in the DigiTRad Lyrics search up the top of the page you'll find them.

Sign up and have the run of the pace though. You'll get more songs than you know what to do with. In between the arguing and suchlike.

Well, there are a few thousand drinking songs out there. The Digital Tradition database doesn't carry tab, but check Google for 'guitar tablature" and you should get a few sites that do. I think OLGA.net will hopefully meet your tab needs.

As to "moonshine", if you provide some lyrics then we might have a better shot at figuring it out for you. The most likely suspect (because it's on the list of 'top ten most played drinking songs' worldwide) would be The Moonshiner, but again - without more to go on, I'm kinda grasping at straws.

Guest, there must be more than one song about moonshine in Ireland. One that's in the DT (little blue box in the top right corner) is MOONSHINER. If that's not what you're looking for you could put @drink in the little blue box, and come up with enough drinking songs to satisfy anybody (or at least a near-teetotaller like me ...). However, many songs haven't made it into the DT but can be found via the 'Digital and Forum Search' (top left corner of the threadlist). oh ya.....also, i heard this band called clair voiance (i am not sure how to spell it) but they played this really cool drinking song called moonshine but i looked on mudcat.org and they didn't have it. So if anyone knows where i can get it that would be rad.
