Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: Mark Cohen Date: 28 Dec 01 - 03:09 AM Leprechaun, we're all asking the musical question: "Which Side Are You On?" Aloha, Mark (onetime Oregonian, visit Colorado frequently to see my daughter...I'm firmly on the fence!) |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: Gypsy Date: 27 Dec 01 - 06:35 PM Bless you Allan. We were caregivers for himself's mum for going on five years. She died last spring. This is our first Christmas OFF in a very long time. |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: leprechaun Date: 27 Dec 01 - 04:37 AM In fifteen years I've only had to work about four Christmases, and maybe five Thanksgivings. They had us on standby for Y2K, but nobody rioted. Until they boot me out of detectives I get to choose my days off unless we get hit with a meth lab. (I hate meth labs) Last New Years Eve I got called out for a meth lab, but we finished it before the festivities started. I hope they don't find one this New Year's Day, because I seriously don't want to miss the Ducks playing the Buffaloes. |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: Mark Cohen Date: 27 Dec 01 - 02:28 AM As the one pediatrician out of ten in town who doesn't "do" Christmas, I always volunteer to be on call. One very sick 2-month-old in the morning and one very sick newborn at 3AM on the 26th....otherwise not much to do but put an icebag on the knee I hurt the day before while trying to keep healthy by running! Both babies are safely ensconced in the Children's hospital in Honolulu (courtesy of the air ambulance and transport team who were also working on Christmas), and most likely will do OK. Happy New Year, everybody! (I'm NOT on call New Year's Eve, but I'm still looking for a date.....!) Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 27 Dec 01 - 12:52 AM If you play to work....can it truly be work?
"Worked" from 6:00 a.m. to midnight the 25th.....but it wasn't work. It's all in the frame of mind....do what you love and love what you do.

Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: musicmick Date: 26 Dec 01 - 11:31 PM Christmas is a big workday for folksingers. This year I did a hospital job in the morning (a last minute booking), a private party at 3, and a Klezmer job at 7. I would rather spend the day with my wife, it's her birthday/ Christmas family getogether, but I have to work when a job comes in. I really appreciate the dedication of those who "man their stations" at times when they should be home but are needed by their communities. So thanks for working Tuesday. |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 26 Dec 01 - 10:01 PM The same evil government that decrees tax inspectors and Revenue assistants should work over Christmas. I'm booking my leave today when I get in, for Christmas 2002, I'm sick of being the only volunteer in. And it's probably the same evil govnerment that allows tax payers to use Dec 31st as an end of accounting period, making the two weeks we have fewest staff, the two busiest weeks of the year! When I worked in Local Government (i.e., local council) there were significant bonuses/time off allowances for working over Christmas.... not so any more. I remember getting time and a half plus a day off in lieu for working during Christmas week.... now they don't even get that. There are only 3 public holidays over Christmas so they don't want to pay the extra and don't see why people should need to take a week. Usual "service needs" apply, like having no more than 2 people off in one section at any given time. My office minimum is 2, and that's what we've got until 4th Jan, me and one other. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: GUEST Date: 26 Dec 01 - 08:41 AM Update: the weather was fine, George got across ok and in the manner of the historically incorrect painting, he stood in the boat, although they used the right flag, not the stars and stripes that the painting shows. One of the other boats got hung up on some rocks; the water level is down due to the drought we've been having. The spectators were no trouble, and no one cursed at me because they arrived late and couldn't get a good parking spot, which is unusual. Earlier in the day, I drove over to Pennsylvania (either Bucks or Northampton County) and had to wait for a garbage truck to get off the road. What evil local government makes its garbage collectors work on Christmas? Anyway, I hope you all had a good Christmas. |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: sledge Date: 26 Dec 01 - 07:10 AM Away from home from 6th December until 27th December as happened last year and the year before and if the rota holds up I'll be doing Christmas and new year next time. It gets you down some times but my collegues Daughter recently gave birth to his first Grandchild, hard to complain about him having Christmas off for that. Happy new year Sledge |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: DancingMom Date: 26 Dec 01 - 02:29 AM Yep, day shift on Dec. 24 and evening shift on Dec. 25. My husband, too, called to active duty with the Air National Guard in September. I've spent many a holiday at work. It forces me to "keep it simple." But we'll make up for it...we're all off the 26th. |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: Allan C. Date: 25 Dec 01 - 09:14 AM In my position as a caregiver for my mom, Christmas Day is not unlike any other day - or as my friend, David C. puts it so well, "It's just another day that ends in "Y". There are other loved ones with whom I would also like to be spending this day, and knowing that might make the day a rather long one. But it turns out that I am only working a half day today after all. My brother will be visiting briefly - thus affording me an opportunity to be elsewhere. Here's a tip of the hat and best wishes for all of you, but a special empathy for those of you who fall into the category of "caregivers". |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: Celtic Soul Date: 25 Dec 01 - 08:54 AM Not Christmas, no. I will be working (performing) New Years, though! :D Frankly, I can think of no better way to ring in the New Year than to sing and earn money while having a blast. Have I mentioned I love my part time performing gig? I only wish it were full time, and I could leave behind the BS of the work-a-day world. |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: MMario Date: 25 Dec 01 - 08:04 AM Nope - I'm off today - but I have worked every day since Thanksgiving. So I'm due for a day off. |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: GUEST,BigDaddy Date: 25 Dec 01 - 06:24 AM There's worse things than working on Christams, and I've done too many of them. One would be working on Christmas and having a life-threatening asthma attack and winding up in the hospital (asthma's been well under control for years now, thank heavens). Another is being unemployed at Christmas. One I've fortunately never had to experience is having nobody with whom to celebrate the season. God bless us every one. |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: selby Date: 25 Dec 01 - 06:09 AM For the last 30 years I have worked as a forgotten worker in the power station's (making electricity)this is now my second christmas off for many a long year YIPPEEEEEE!!!!! Keith |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: sophocleese Date: 24 Dec 01 - 08:44 AM I'm waking up and getting ready for my part time job taking pictures of newborns at the hospital. I'll be doing it tomorrow as well. Its only a couple of hours. So I'm more looking forward to it than dreading it. |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: gnu Date: 24 Dec 01 - 05:56 AM Up at 0400 or 0500, work til 0900, four hours with my brother's family... noisy little brats, and the kids will be there, too... back to work, Miller time at 1700. Just another day except for the four hour break. |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: alison Date: 23 Dec 01 - 11:47 PM Yep.... night duty tonight (Christmas Eve)... babies don't stop being born just because its Christmas!!..*grin* so I'll come home in the morning... watch my kids open their pressies... then go to bed.... slainte alison |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: Hollowfox Date: 23 Dec 01 - 11:22 PM Not this year, Steve, but I have in the past when I worked in a hospital. I appreciate you're being on duty, and I hope the weather is kind to you. |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: Hilary Date: 23 Dec 01 - 08:12 PM Yup, My next off duty is 27th & 28th. (but also 31st & 1st - so not too bad at all). I work in the house of 5 people with Learning Difficulties so I still get to do most of the usual Christmas stuff. I last had a fortnight off over Christmas /New Year in 1985 - I don't think I'd know what to do with all that free time anymore. Hope you still enjoy it ! H |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: Sorcha Date: 23 Dec 01 - 07:24 PM Of course. He's a cop. Working on New Year's Day as well. Every year for the last 17, too. He works all holidays, but we've learned to work around it. It's only 8 hrs of the day, after all. |

Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: Bat Goddess Date: 23 Dec 01 - 07:10 PM I'm freelance -- and work has been scarce lately. So, yes, I'll probably be putting in some design time on a logo, slaving over a hot computer. Helping the reinactors sounds like fun! (So is logo design, though.) Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: working on Christmas? From: wysiwyg Date: 23 Dec 01 - 06:41 PM Well, we are working Christmas Eve and Christmas.... plus a funeral a day or two later when we usually have our private family celebration. We'll think of you.... ~S~ |
Subject: working on Christmas? From: RangerSteve Date: 23 Dec 01 - 06:20 PM Is anyone else working on Christmas? I'd like to know that I'm not alone. The high point of my day will be directing traffic during the reenactment of George Washington and the troops crossing the Delaware River on their way to the battle of Trenton. This is the side of law enforcement you don't see on TV. |
