Subject: Mudcat Jeri on the turnpike to hell!
From: Rick Fielding
Date: 26 Dec 01 - 06:13 PM

Well not exactly Hell....but she DID spend the night at a motel in Cornwall Ontario, and if you've ever filled your lungs with the air of a pulp and paper mill town you'll know it doesn't smell like Heaven!

Yup, the good lady came all the way from New Hampshire with a snow storm on her ass, to join us for Christmas, as she did a couple of years ago.

Last night one of our gang sat practically open mouthed as Peter T, Jeri, myself, and a fairly prominent Mudcat lurker tried to explain the magic and mystery of the little site that's altered so many lives for the better. Naturally as most of us already know, it's almost impossible to explain the MC phenomenon to someone who hasn't been here. All I know is that Jeri and Peter are two damn good folks that Mudcat brought into my life, and I'm greatful.

So how have I tried to make Jeri's stay relaxing? How about working the tar out of her on guitar, banjo, dulcimer and everything else that's hangin on the wall! She may be the ex-military, but I'm the one that's actin' like a drill-sgt. The kid's gonna be a hell of a picker!

Hope everyone's Christmas has been great.

Rick

Good to know she made it okay. I hear Buffalo, NY got 2 feet over Christmas and is due for another foot by tomorrow!

I know what you mean, Rick, about describing the Mudcat. Here's one way I tried to explain to a radio host whom I'd sent a note to, thanking him for a wonderful show which featured Mudcatter, John Peekstock, and his wife, Anna, in their band, Telynor.

"Please visit us. We have a thread there on the Forum, today, http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=42083 which alerted us all to your show and the fact that one of our members, John, was going to be on, so several of us listened. It also prompted me to buy their Christmas CD.

"The Mudcat Cafe houses the Digital Tradition, a folksong database with over 8,000 song lyrics and we're working on adding midis to all of those. Folk musicians from all over the world gather there, not just to share music, but also their lives, their triumphs and tragedies and we also make merry with totally riotous of inanity such as http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=11455 "Hokey-Pokey and the Druids."

"We have quite a few well-known members, such as Sandy and Caroline Paton of Folk Legacy Records, Don Firth and Bob Nelson from your own area, Rick Fielding from Toronto, Art Thieme from Chicago, Roy Harris in the UK, Jean Ritchie, who posts as "kytrad," as well as others who prefer to stay incognito.

"Best of all, we share our love of music, and we have created a real community, with such things as a 30 day cross-country trip by an American member and one from the UK, to visit as many Mudcatters as possible, which sparked many more shorter journeys and regular gatherings in the UK, Canada, and here when we've met to make music together. We go above and beyond for one another and hash out tough world issues, as well.

"If it seems I am enthused, you are right. I, and many others, believe the Mudcat to be the best place ever created on the Internet and a model of all of the positive the "web" has to the potential to offer.

"I hope I haven't overwhelmed you with info! Please come take a peek and you'll see what I mean.

"Thanks!"

kat

Sounds like an excellent Christmas; next year I'm coming!

I just wanted to say that although I'm relatively new here, I've already had loads of fun, & taken part in some interesting discussions with some very cool people. I've had a passion for folk & traditional music all my life (it's one of my husband & my strongest shared interests, which makes vacation plans for Sidmouth & Whitby sooooo much fun to make!), and the resources I've found here on the Mudcat are so valuable and great!

Thanks to all for putting it here, keeping it here, and providing such a fun place to hang out.

We took the Pres. of the Press Room to a Canajun' style music party tonight. She met a few of the Toronto stalwarts and sang a couple of songs her ownself including a beautiful effort called Shine like a Diamond, which had a couple of folks thinking it was old, old old! She got a chance to hear Howard Kaplan do an original "counting ballad" that had to be heard to be believed. A knowledge of groundhog dentistry would have helped!

We had a chance to wish Grit Laskin all the best as he was arriving as we were heading off into the night. Grit has just built a brand new mandolin that is to drool for. Takes a LOT of drool to afford one though!

Well what's in store for our guest tomorrow? Heather has suggested a visit to the zoo....but I want her at the 12th Fret so I can talk her into buying a 37 string Kafoozalum, which I hear is on sale for a measly 78 thousand dollars (12.50 Yankee bucks)

Don't worry Press Room folks...we'll send her back in one piece.

Cheers

Rick

Is the Kafoozalum Indain or Brazilian Rosewood? If it's Indian, try to negotiate a slightly better price, but if it's Brazilian and in reasonable shape, snatch it up.

I don't have time for this foolishness...I'm puttin Jeri on to clear things up Spaw. here she is:
HELP ME! Rick has got me playing everything in the basement. (I don't know what that thing is that has 11 strings and keeps crawling under the sofa whenever I set it down, but I don't feel comfortable with any instrument that eats red meat.) He beats me and feeds me bread and water whenever I mess up an F chord. NOW, he's trying to get me to buy this Kafoozalum thingie...

Seriously, I'm having a great time here. I should be back by Fri night, but I'm not sure I'll be concious. (Not that it matters.)

The REAL Jeri (accept no substitutes)

Be strong, Jeri, resist. Many a fine lass has had to sell herself into white slavery to pay for her trips to the Twelfth Fret with Rick Fielding. In fact that is reason #3 why all those guy guitar nurds are there. (I leave reasons #1 and #2 to your imagination). yours, Peter T.

Jeri, if you are going to sell yourself into slavery anyway, how about selling yourself to me? I could use a big sister/someone to ride shotgun on the kids/cat herder around here. I can offer lots of folk music/ an eccentric guitarist and, at the last count, five guitars, two mandolins and assorted noise makers....I had one of those 11 string fellas but it crawled out the cat flap and is now terrorising the neighbours....it's having so much fun, I can't bear to fetch it home.

Jed, I could try hiding under the bed. Right now, the biggest challenge is trying to figure out if I can slip a Martin guitar into the car without Rick noticing.

Well I can hardly believe how quickly things happen here in the frozen North. Jeri has just signed a contract with Columbia records!*

* Her first four CDs are free, and after that she pays only 19.95 per CD, with a bonus Michael Jackson recording thrown in.

OK, let's see...here's what's really happening. Apparently you good folks at the Press Room will not have her company tonight, because she was convinced (up until we showed her the date on a newspaper) that today was Thursday, rather than Friday. This happens to people on the far side of 40 occasionally. I'm going to take her to Encore Music today, another of those places that I waste my life in.

She's learnin' chords like a madwoman!

Rick............could you tuck her into a closet for a month or so? She doesn't eat much, and we could use that voice the first weekend in February. You be safe coming home, wee one. And stay away from the Kafoozalum. Fielding will try to convince you it is harmless, but studies have shown that it leads to hard drugs.

SHARON A.

The "kafoozalum" that Rick refers to is actually an Americanized word for the Nepalese actual word which is Kaffeloozu, a form of hammered dulcimer. It differs in significant ways, but is still a very similar instrument.

The Kaffeloozu has a single rail dividing the strings at the halfway point rather than at the three-fifths of the hammered dulcimer. This tuning design makes it more adaptable to eastern music where it comes from. The string courses are almost always of four strings rather than 2 or 3 with one tunes an octave below the other three (bottom string). The other major difference is that there are 10-30 "sympathetic" strings below the usual string courses running vertically across the soundboard and about three-eighths of an inch above it, making them about three-fourths of an inch or so below the main strings. These are tuned to Pentatonic scales and drastically increase the overtone harmonics. This is not an uncommon practice with eastern instruments, the Citar being another example.

Very few of the Kaffeloozu are ever found here as the difficulty in playing makes them more of interest to people liking Indian and other eastern music. Interestingly, it is the only instrument to come out of Nepal. Some of the them are quite beautiful with mosaic inlays on the soundboard and made of local woods including a dense and hard variety of juniper which grows only in the higher elevations in that part of the world.

I didn't use the NY State Thruway to get here - I headed north, then west. The roads are better and I don't have to worry about being stopped by police. (The horses just can't catch my car, and the little red light keeps falling off their heads. The "unmarked" ones are a little sneakier, but that's another story.)

I've thought about hiding in a closet, but my car in the driveway would be a big tip-off. Besides, with both Jed and Mick here, the square inchage will be severely limited.

I am completely amazed. To think that two of my closest friends would say that the information I so laboriously reported was complete and total bullshit and to know that they have each searched for verification.......Well, I just don't know what to say. The fact that they are correct and the whole post was complete and total bullshit is neither here nor there, but I did enjoy the knowing that they were piddling away time on assorted search engines. What bothers me more is that I was so stupid as to use Tibet ferchrissakes........I mean the only musicians or instruments that I could find pictures of were a drum and a wacky looking thing they refer to as a guitar. The word just sounded kinda' near east, but I should have gone with India or maybe a middle eastern place where I could have found a vaaguely dulcimer like instrument unlabeled like a santir or a cymbalom (both real). Yalk about piddlin' away time on a search engine.......

Luvya' both!!

Yeah, what a deal........I can't get by with a damn thing! Sure was fun though. It's a problem being too well known at times. If someone else had posted that......Oh well..............

BTW....The cymbalom is probably the "most eveolved" form of the hammered dulcimer, having more courses and chromatics as well as things like damping pedals. It's about as close to a piano as the dulcimer gets.

I am totally surprised at the scoffing. In the 1950s there was a short vogue in the Nepalese Kafoozalum after one appeared on the Arthur Godfrey show. I realize that this might be after the time of some people, but it really isn't all that long ago that the pawn shops had used plastic Arthur Godfrey push button 'easy kafoozalum' boxes that snapped over the playing surface. This made it easy to play "Little Grass Shack" and "Buddha's Unchanging Hand."

Talk about thread creep . . . (no, there's NOT an actual person referred to as the thread creep. :-)

Uh, remember Jeri? Is she back on that old turnpike to hell, I mean, home? Is she still trapped in Toronto (oh woe, oh woe, chuckle, chuckle).

Will somebody please whisper the words, "Lobster for New Year's Eve supper" into her ear?

Hey, Rick! You can't keep her!!!

Sorry for the thread creep, but here's a message for the Lord of all flying rodents: Dear Linn...

When last seen, Jeri was flying down the hiway towards home. Her little red sportscar started burnin' rubber at about 3pm. and her estimated time of arrival (barring abduction by Quebecois separatistes) should be about 11pm oe so.

She's well-fed, well rested, filled up to the brim with guitar chords and right hand patterns and fresh from a high powered jam last night...the woman's gonna be a DANGEROUS picker!

Plus....I talked her into buying a 1947 Faranablaster!

Cheers

Rick

So Rick, when next I come to Toronto, I think we need to have an octave mandolin hunt.

Sounds like a wonderful visit, and Jeri must drive like the rodent out of hell. Takes us 8 hours to get from the big T to VT. and NH is below us (or was when last I checked.)

Yeah, my time was off vis a vis Jeri's return...more like two in the morning. As long as she misses those hideous storms. Amazingly Toronto hasn't had a flake while everything around us has been positively BURIED!

I'm still waiting for an ass scan........ta' hell with Faranablasters...............Hmmmm...........They all have too tinny a sound anyway. Besides, Rick should know better than to let her get a 29 model. The factory had a problem with the materials that year as they had been having for the three years prior to 29. Then the changed hands following the stock market crash in October and were bought for a song by Oscar Schmidt. Schmidt later sold the company in 32 without making a single instrument and when the new ones came out in 35 they were built of plywoods and never the same. The recent upsurge in collecting has made all of them valuable, but only the ones made before 1925 have any real playability or sound.

Now let's see some ass!!

ETA 11PM, MY ASS!!! (No, that didn't arrive before the rest of me.) I just got in. Heather said to call when I got home, but somehow I just can't bring myself to do it. 588 miles up and 740 home - this route sucked, although I drove through the Adirondack Mts, and they were pretty in the full (or nearly full) moon. I hit an itty bitty white-out, with road condition of "where the hell is it," but it only lasted about 10 miles. Other than that, clear sailing.

Linn, if you call me anytime before, say, 5 PM, don't expect full sentences or even whole words...unless they're 4 letter, 1 syllable ones. I've had enough coffee to drown an elephant in a life jacket, so I don't know when I'll get to sleep.

Jeri, if you went through Montreal AND the Adirondacks en route from Toronto to southern NH, I'm surprised you got there at all!

Cornwall is the best place to cross the border hassle-free, but it's not a place I'd want to spend the night (having lived there once). We used to go via the Adirondacks, Saranac Lake and all that, on our way to southern Vermont, but too many winter storms changed our habit--we just take 11 along the north edge now, cross at Rouses Point, go down the Champlain Islands for a bit of scenery, and hit the 89. You don't get Adirondack whiteouts, and you don't get lost in Whitehall NY like we always used to.

Rick and Spaw, if you're gonna try to fool us with fake instrument descriptions, you should really locate the imaginary beasts somewhere other than the 12th Fret, which has the best and most regularly updated (DAILY!) website of any music store I've ever seen--and it seems like they have 15 or 20 grand worth of new instruments practically every day; you could almost make a living with that sort of turnover.

And Happy New Year everybody. Don't sit on scanners.

Willie-O
