"Suppertime' was introduced in the revue, "As Thousands Cheer," 1933,
sung by Ethel Waters.

The book of the revue was written by Moss Hart, based on events of the day.

This song by Irving Berlin is heart-rending in its simplicity. It should be known as well as "Strange Fruit.

The most beautiful version I ever heard of this is one by Nancy Wilson--incredibly moving.

Thanks, MCP, I think, in fact, that it was in a biography of Irving Berlin that I heard/saw the clip of Ethel Waters singing it. I had forgotten it was a Berlin song.

The song itself doesn't make it clear that the father has been lynched, but the context in the show does,

The song is Supper Time, written by Irving Berlin for the 1933 show "As Thousands Cheer", where Ethel Waters introduced it. I thought I had this on tape, but the only tape I can find the moment doesn't have this song on it. The words are here, taken from this site Sing365.com

Ella Fitzgerald also recorded it on the Irving Berlin Songbook record.

SUPPER TIME
(Irving Berlin)

Supper time -
I should set the table,
'Cause it's supper time;
Somehow I'm not able,
'Cause that man o'mine
Ain't comin' home no more

Supper time -
Kids will soon be yellin'
For their supper time;
How'll I keep from tellin' that
That man o'mine
Ain't comin' home no more?

How'll I keep explainin'
When they ask me where he's gone?
How'll I keep from cryin'
When I bring their supper on?
How can I remind them
To pray at their humble board?
How can I be thankful
When they start to thank the Lord?
Lord!

Supper time,
I should set the table
'Cause it's supper time;
Somehow I'm not able,
'Cause that man o'mine
Ain't comin' home no more,
Ain't comin' home no more.

BTW, the song I'm looking for is NOT one of the ones mentioned in this thread.

Subject: Ethel Waters song (Supper's On??) , maybe?)
From: Genie

In one of the recent PBS music history series (maybe the Ken Burns "Jazz" series), I heard a young Ethel Waters sing a beautiful, terribly sad song. It's a mother singing to her children, knowing that their father will not be coming home, because he has been lynched.
I think the title is "Supper's On," or "Supper Time" or something like that.
Does anyone know what the title is? Anyone have the lyrics or know of a CD that has this on it?

This song came to my mind when I read the threads on "Saddest Song of All Times."
