Hello all

Found this forum searching for Lakes Of Pontchartrain tab... found lots of versions but not Deanta's.

Anyone know the chords or where I might find them? Pretty sure it's not in common tuning, can't find a single chord earing it out!

Only discovered the song accidentally - it's on free CD with Celtic Connections magazine in the UK, published a year or so ago. Only just realised I'd like to play it!

Many thanks

Simon Tims simon.tims@thebeach.co.uk

On their Ready For the Storm cd, Green Linnet. There is a short clip. www.greenlinnet.com and then search.

in case you didn't fliter/search for threads on lyrics/history of the song - but don't believe all you read, it is contradictory but then that's traditional on the 'cat.

Deanta is one of my favorite Irish bands! Pretty much everything they do is good.

The chords for Lakes of Ponchatrain sound like open tuning to my ear. DADGAD tuning is quite common in Ireland so I wouldn't be surprised.

I don't know if Deanta still exist as a band but they have three recordings available - all of which are superb.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I'll try the other tuning method. If that doesn't work I'll spend some time with our friend the capo. Seen lots of suggested chords which all sound great with the song so far, but none that match Deanta's recording.

Simon

A fellow named Barry Hutchinson tabed it out in open G tuning DGDGBD on guitarists.net

My midi sequence is fairly close to the style performed by Deanta. With sequencing software you could print out the chords from the background track for strings and/or the finger-picking pattern on the guitar track. The lyrics are here.

From what I found is that open F is the key with a capo on the 2nd fret because I tune down a few strings and a few up .
I can play along with Paul's cd and it sounds exactly right.
So try this too.

Regards, Alfons

Paul Brady's website provides two and only two songs in tablature form, and "Lakes of Pontchartrain" in one of them. His arrangement is in open "D" tuning, capoed at the fourth fret, which if I'm not mistaken translates to the key of F# (or Gb is you prefer).

See the list of "Related Threads," above ~ two or three of them (which should be among the most-recent related threads at the top of the list) contain links to the Paul Brady website's tab, and there is plenty of discussion about South Louisiana geography, meaning of the word "Creole," and what Irishmen were doing on the south shore of Lake Pontchartran in the 1830s. I have already repeated myself on these subjects more than often enough on these topics, but nyone interested can find plenty of discussion on this site about this song.

Speaking of Deanta, does anyone know whether singer Mary Dillon is still active? And is Cara Dillon her sister?

Cheers,
Michael

I'm currently trying to learn from this vid, it's tuned to dadf#ad, and i'm also making use of the tab from Paul Brady's website, www.paulbrady.com - the tabs not hard to find when you're there.

One thing that's bugged me since I decided to learn this is that I couldn't find any tab for either Guitar Pro, Power Tab, or Tefview, which is how I usually start learning a new song (with the exceptin of Don McLeans Castles in the Air recently, which I learned from another Tube and text only tab, but that was kinda easy).

Thanks to Power Tab I was able to learn Bert Jansch's Black Water Side relatively painlessly, and Tefview is helping me learn Child Grove atm, a banjo tab in fact that I'm modding for dadgad guitar. These progs are excellent for learning new songs, and if I could find a tab for one of them for Ponchartrain I'd be happy out. Ah well, we make do, eh? I should be thankful just for the tube and the tab and the net that grants access, and the fact that i live in the age that i do - and i am :)
