Subject: Sat., 20 April '02 From: Murph10566 Date: 23 Apr 02 - 10:59 AM Hi All - Did anyone else in the Northeast feel Saturday's morning Wake-up call ? It was 5.5 on the Richter Scale, and the epicenter was near Plattsburgh, NY... I was in Cornwall, Ontario (approx. 100 miles away), and was awakened by the rumble/tremble to find my wife Patricia doing a fair two-step around the bed ! I insisted she settle down, and acknowledge that once again I had succeeded in 'making the earth move'... but No - she didn't buy it either... I've just returned from upstate and haven't been on-line since last week, so if this has already been covered in an earlier thread: apologies to all... Stay tuned, M.

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake, Anyone ? From: GUEST,jonesey Date: 23 Apr 02 - 11:21 AM Lived in LA a few years ago and was through 3. They measured 4.3, 5.4 and 7.1 and can tell you a 5.4 while not 'severe' by LA standards would, probably cause alot of damage in NYC. Had the epicenter been within 20 miles of Manhattan, say. Supposedly, the largest e.q. to have happened in the North American continent happened in the Mississippi River basin. The ground liquified and it lasted for over a month. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please as I remember seeing a TV show years ago in reference to the Mississippi River quake. |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake, Anyone ? From: GUEST,bbc at work Date: 23 Apr 02 - 11:39 AM Hi, Tim, Although some folks in Yorktown evidentally felt it, we slept right through. My son in Troy, however, did hear it. He figured some of the kids in the dorm had their bass on too high! : ) We had one several years ago in the early am that shook my closet doors & woke me up. bbc |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake, Anyone ? From: Murph10566 Date: 23 Apr 02 - 12:45 PM Hi Barb - I'm surprised that more weren't aware of the 'shifty' business... It certainly pales when compared to some on the west coast, and of course, the fabled arc lights, but it definitely got my attention... a little unsettling, if you'll forgive the pun... How's the music goin' ? M. |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake, Anyone ? From: DonD Date: 23 Apr 02 - 01:30 PM Once again I have to carp at the presumtion that everyone knows where everyone else is. To say "We didn't feel a thing here,' could be egotistical (Everyone knows where I am), cliquish (those who know who I am know where I am and screw anybody else), modest (nobody will care who or where I am -even if it kills the point of a geographically oriented thread), lack of consideration (I don't care if my post is meaningless, I just don't care), or simple oversight (oh, didn't I mention where I am?). In any case, it is so easily remedied that I urge everyone to get into the easy habit of saying, "Well, that's just the way it looks to me here in Yonkers, NY, looking out across the Bronx River into Tuckahoe in Westchester County, New York about 16 miles from Times Square and the same distance from Indian Point." Where I didn't feel the earthquake because I was in Wilmington Delaware at the time visiting my daughter, where there was no tremor either. |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake, Anyone ? From: Rich_and_Dee Date: 23 Apr 02 - 02:08 PM Hi, Here is Southeastern Ct, in Norwich, we didn't feel a thing. I remember one other earthquake in New England that happened sometime in the late 1980's. I was living in Boston, had just got home from work, sat down with glass in hand and noticed the ice cubes were clinking together. That's the extent of my earthquake experience. Hope all is well at near Plattsburgh, NY. Rich |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake, Anyone ? From: Bill D Date: 23 Apr 02 - 02:27 PM in reference to the question about the biggest quake in the US... New Madrid earthquake I walked along the fault line a number of years ago, and after 175 years, you could still see clearly where areas had raised 5-6 feet....changed the course of rivers, etc..I hope I never go thru a serious one. |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake, Anyone ? From: Mooh Date: 23 Apr 02 - 02:34 PM I didn't feel it while visiting the Bruce Peninsula north of Wiarton (Ontario Canada) which is on the Niagara Escarpment. I haven't heard how far west it was felt. Mooh. |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake, Anyone ? From: GUEST,jonesey Date: 23 Apr 02 - 02:34 PM WoW! Thanks Spaw...didn't realize it was such recent history. In the same documentary was a prediction of an earthquake(sometime within the next 10,000 years)in the midwest. I recall the statement made in describing the intensity: "Imagine the San Francisco earthquake as the tinkling of a 'summons bell' compared to a huge gong...that's what the midwestern quake is going to be like." Hope I'm on tour by then... |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake, Anyone ? From: Ebbie Date: 23 Apr 02 - 05:27 PM DonD, Well, that's just the way it looks to me here in Juneau, Alaska, U.S., looking out across the ocean channel to Douglas Island, in the City and Borough of Juneau, about 4000 miles from Times Square and and the same distance from Arkansas. Didn't feel a thing. :) |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake, Anyone ? From: Burke Date: 23 Apr 02 - 06:03 PM I'm in Central New York, just south of Thruway exit 32. (Mid-way between Syracuse & Albany) I was up & getting ready to leave with a friend. We did not feel it, but it was a big topic with those who had felt it, when we got to Rochester. Almost everyone I work with felt it too & say the dishes rattled, etc. I think about the time it hit I was trying to make up with my cat, whom I'd accidently shut in the basement all night. I was talking or distracted, but I think I would have noticed dishes shaking. I don't know why we didn't notice anything. I've been told Boston should get a big one sometime. |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake, Anyone ? From: michaelr Date: 23 Apr 02 - 08:22 PM Dishes rattling? We get that twice a month here in NorCal. It's not considered a quake unless parts fall off buildings. It's a good thing the State of California has a comprehensive Earthquake Prevention Program in place. Michael |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake, Anyone ? From: The Pooka Date: 23 Apr 02 - 10:03 PM Central Connecticut here - most definitely felt it. Woke wife & me up, bed shaking (yeah yeah, because the earth moved), dresser-mirror wobbling, twigs or nuts falling off trees & clattering on roof, etc. Seemed to last 15 seconds or so; not sure because half-awake. Big deal on local news, everybody saying they felt it. Somebody blamed it on the recent heat wave. :) TV weather guy illustrated plate tectonics by pushing 2 pieces of cardboard together, with no discernable effect. Great fun. // In my youth (oy) I misspent some time in and around Plattsburgh. Courting. Think I've been on that rural road that collapsed in or near Ausable Forks, or Keesville. // Here in CT there was a rather considerable earthquake epicentered at a place called Moodus, in colonial times, mid-1700's. / I remember it well. Terrible destruction. |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake, Anyone ? From: Bert Date: 24 Apr 02 - 01:22 AM Another Quake is due on the New Madrid fault within the next sixty years or so. But knowing that doesn't help. What does help is earthquake damage mitigation. So here are a few tips, if you live in an area of risk. 1. Tie a steel strap around your water heater and screw it into the walls so that your water heater won't fall over. A lot of damage is caused by flooding when the water heater falls and breaks the water lines. 2. Install an automatic shut off valve on any gas lines that run into your house. 3. If your house has a decorative facing brick wall, tie, then it into the framing with steel ties. 4. If you do any serious redecorating, consider replacing the sheet rock on the inside the corners of your house with plywood. 5. Secure bookshelves and refrigerators to the wall with steel brackets. 6. If there is an earthquake, hide inside in a strong corner of the house. Don't rush out of the door. Many deaths occur from people going outside and being hit by masonry falling from the house. |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake, Anyone ? From: Susan A-R Date: 24 Apr 02 - 10:48 PM Here in Montpelier VT, oh an hour and a half east of Plattsburgh with Lake Champlain in between. I thougt a truck had hit the house (there's a driveway behind it and the garbage trucks come close enough that it's a real worry( but it lasted a bit long, knocked over a few things too and ruined my plan to sleep in. It does make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. But then again, so did the inch and a half of snow on my apricot trees two days ago. They had popped inbto full bloom last week when it was in the 90s. Odd week. Susan A-R |
