Just seen these advertised for the first time in the U.K. Has anyone tried them out?

Never seen one before but i'll admit that my curiosity is whetted. Anyone who's used one, please, post a review!

Seems like if you slipped a regular plastic pick in the end of a paper clip you would have the poor person's version.

It looks like a needle threader. I might have a rummage around and see if I can find one before I order the picks!

Metal-on-metal is usually a bad thing, isn't it?

The manufacturers are claiming that the special smooth finish reduces wear on steel or nylon strings but I think they mean by comparison with other steel picks.

You can make a similar sort of thing with a pick using a bit of nylon guitar string, and that doesn't hurt the strings. OK for strumming, but a bit clumsy for picking.

I'd like to try one of these wirethings, but I'd be doubtful. One of the thingsith a normal pick is you can bend it as you're playing when you want to make it a wee bit more rigid, and I can't see how you could do that with this needle-threader variety.

Well for the sake of a couple of quid, I'll give them an order and certainly let everyone know how I get on ! I gig with a nylon stringer and a Telecaster and cover a few different styles so it'll be interesting to see how many strings I break!

Well, I received a pack of three "wirethings" this morning which is a pretty good turn-around from the U.S. to the U.K. for $1 postage. I can tell you that they're really good! Nice and light, good grip and after a few minutes playing I can get plenty of expression out of a note and loads of attack on a nice bluesy bend. Pinched harmonics are a treat with these too. Obviously I haven't gigged with them yet but I can't see a problem. I expected them to be a bit clumsy or harsh but I must say I'm very pleasantly suprised!

Keen to give 'em a try!

I just ordered a 3 pak.

$8.+ for 3 picks, what the hell, I want to know.

I wonder how friendly they will be on my Elixer strings. By the picture they look alittle too stiff for my taste. I use the extra thin or medium picks.

So why didn't I talk myself out of it. Go figure!

Enjoy, Roy

From: Clinton Hammond

Well, my 6 finally arrived today...

Ummm... I think I hate 'em...

They make a horrid RAKING sound when strumming them over wound guitar strings heavier than .25 (my preferred G)...

So, ummm... I'm gonna try 'em for another couple of days and see if the 'grow' on me but I doubt it...

So... well... there seem to be people here who liked 'em... wanna buy these six off me... it's either that or, I guess I'll contact wirething.com and see what their return policy is...

I'll give 'em this... on the smaller guage strings, and especially on the steel strings, they sound nice and bright... sorta that "New String" sound, off strings that haven't been changed for at least a couple of weeks...

Ah, now I understand, Clinton. "Picks" is a very common word on music sites, and it brought up results that took up too much bandwidth. That set off a limiter that gave you the error message. These picks would have given you some interesting results (try it), but wouldn't have picked up the recent wirething thread because the thread was posted after the last seacrh indexing was performed.
Hope you don't mind us giving you a hard time, but the temptation to harass you was just too great...

I get worse than that from people who know and LOVE me!

LOL!!!!

Just out of curiosity, how often does "Search Indexing" happen?

So well, I'm ghosting through the back of a closet, and I find a box of old broken guitar chords and such like and in the bottom of the box is a small zip-loc bag with 5 Wirething Picks in it...

Anybody else ever try 'em??

Anybody ever try 'em and LIKE 'em?

Anybody want mine?

These are flat-picks mate...

See the link in the first post to this thread...

:-)

Tangentally, I've also tried the "Speed Pick" and it just didn't move me much.. maybe I have to give it a little more 'get used to it" time...

The wire version of a fingerpick would be kind of a mizrab sitar pick. I made some of those wire things myself from the patent, but it just wasn't the sound I wanted.

I make some of my own picks out of offcuts from 0.5 mm black scratchplate celluloid.
(It seems to be the same stuff Gibson use for their picks.)
They can be any size or shape. All you need is a sharp pair of scissors and a nail file.
People who supply instrument makers sell it.

Anyone else know of any raw materials (plastics)?

credit cards cut into triangles make home made picks..
the raised numbers and letters give it somw extra grip.

Like you, Clinton, mine have gravitated to the bottom of my gig-bag and were forgotten about untill just now. I did use them for a while and they were ok but I'm using my fingers/nails more and more lately and have little use for them.

"I did use them for a while and they were ok"

Really? Cause I find that they "rake" across the wound strings on my guitar in a VERY unpleasant way...

Maybe that says more about my playing than anything else? I donno....

Well, C-flat... send me yours and I'll see if I can find 'em ALL a good home!

LOL

I'm pretty curious, however I do like a little bit of flex in a pick How much does this funky-looking wirething move, compared to a 1mm nylon flatpick??. I have in the past used an old credit card for a pick also they go ok. I wonder how much of a withdrawal you could make if you inserted a plectrum into an ATM? would there be a johnny cash song printed on the recipt?, the lyrics to 'pickin' time'? mabye.......but perhaps not.    I've also cut up plastic milkbottles, too thin ( I did consider laminating them), too much effort folded up sheets of paper, too short-lived used paper-clips, too awkward   used fingers, too painful       used nothing, too quiet   dragon bum-scales, too fictitious   mooowpoocakes, too close to home then!, I heard about plectrums! they're quite good and just the right shape......       I'm wondering if wirethings have arrived in Australia?, we do have wire things but mainly coat hangers and paper clips, not 'wirethings' (*wink, wink). Anyway, I wouldn't mind hearing a report on their flexibility thanks.    muhkuhpuh

Flexibility is NOT a feature of these picks. I would see their main use in gypsy-jazz playing as a replacement for those extremely thick, heavy and pricey jazz-picks. They do work well on nylon strings and offer a very good grip too.

So CH - want to send them to me? I'd like to try one just to satisfy the curious side - Blue Grass does not use a lot of flex in lead runs so they might work for some things.

Let me know if either of you want to send them off and I'll pay you for them - postage too as I'm not looking for a freeby - Send the particulars in a Private Message and I'll give you my address -

Thanks
Steve
