Some of us have been sitting home all weekend, thinking of you. I hope you all had a *wonderful* time! Did Mmario ever get there? Hope to see many of you next weekend at NOMAD. BTW, we did have the consolation of hearing Gordon Bok & his wonderful wife, Carol Rohl perform Friday evening. The combination of their voices & instruments is truly a joy to hear!

best,

Yeah, we tortured him with beef in the smoker and spinach-sour cream potatoes, with smoked Greek sausage and a good pile of fresh hummus to come tomorrow (before we let him Get-Away). We may have to go busk somewhere tomorrow just for laughs, of course keeping the getaway car handy in case we are not fully appreciated.

We missed you MMario!!!!!

Every day, I checked the table with the name buttons, and yours was always there *sob*, and people were asking about you.

Sorry you had car troubles and couldn't make it ;-(

(But I'm really glad you're safe and Wysiwyg was able to help.)

P.S., the Getaway was fantastic. I'll have more to say later, I'm sure, but for now, the final parting moments for me and Rob (JtS)were perfectly fitting. Me, Rob, and Rita Ferrara standing under a pine tree while Rita sang "Rose of Allandale" just to us. It was beautiful.

Well, I made it up for Saturday, and ended up not leaving until Noon on Sunday (somehow there just happened to be a sleeping bag in the trunk of my car, I wonder how it got there) ;-). It again was a memorable experience, only limited by missing those that couldn't make it (David C, MMario, Max, Jed, Pene, the Pattons... we missed you all). Carol C and Jack the Sailor truly looked very happy together. It was great meeting the new folks too: Willie-O, Homeless, Morticia, and others.

I'll let those that were there the whole time describe all the fantasic music, good jammin', and how cold it was. Though the Missing Person Gospel Quartet was simply indescribable, and they are the nicest people that I think you could ever meet. I also got to play my gutbucket with people again: at the contra-dance session, and jammin' Saturday night. Wow! It always gives me a thrill to play with others that are so fantastic, and find that they are so open to others joining in! We only stayed up until 4 am Saturday night.

This was my third year, and as time goes on it seems that the music becomes almost secondary. Though we see each other in the flesh only briefly each year the real highlight is connecting with friends from before. The bonds and camaraderie that develop over these three brief days each year are what the Getaway is all about.

Still in a daze.

JAB

The Getaway was, as always, outstanding. We look forward to it every year, all year, and just have the greatest time. NEXT year, we're going to leave Sunday night, instead of Sunday morning, so we can do all the Sunday stuff, instead of packing up the tent and driving home. The food this year (at least while we were there) was the best yet. (though a number of us still miss doing kitchen duty with Debbie McClatchey and eating her excellent cooking!)

THE Highlight for me was learning all those cool chord inversions from Rick Fielding. Insofar as I was sitting in the front of a theater barn, with a mess of people watching, and Rick telling me that I was going to be backing him up on stage at a major performance (and me with stage fright the size of a house!) you could call it a private lesson. What was really nifty about it was that in the TV room after supper I was able to play those inversions on a number of songs! Goes to show that THIS middle-aged dog can still learn new tricks!

I don't know what was Reynaud's high point, but he bought a new banjo from Gutbucketeer and played it at the concert. He also filled in at the contra dance while I was off with Lisa Null doing vocal things.

Together, I best liked the jam session Saturday night after the concert. It was in one of the cabins, and we just kept going around the circle. Gutbucketeer was on the washtub, which sounded great! Tim and Glen did a surfer duet with Glen using a cot frame for a hand drum. Unfortunately, we left around 2 am, long before it broke up, anticipating an early morning tearing down the tent and driving back to CT.

As for the weather, I think the weekend at Prince William was colder and much much much wetter. This was actually not bad!!!

But there are just too many great memories to recount here. We'll be looking forward to doing it again next year!

Well, I'm home and my husband's off to work. But I can't bring myself to unpack yet. I've got about six and a half hours of video this year and once I get it back on CD Rom (2-3 weeks) those of you who missed it will have a chance to share a moment or two. ( NOTE: not professional taping, just fun footage). Max did make it up Friday night, but disappeared on Saturday somethng about work....???

We missed him...It's an amazing group. Seamus Kennedy popped in at about 1 am last night and stayed for a couple of songs it was a wonderful treat. I see these folks once a year for the past three years, but it truely is a homecoming experience. Each year the greetings are tighter and warmer...the experience just keeps building.

But a clear highlight was Judy Cook singing the pig song to Big Mick... and perhaps Moticia in tears as she heard Rubber Ducky...Love Ya all.. Kathy

Susette and I enjoyed the getaway quite a bit. I would be remiss if I didn't point out a few items and statements of fact:

Morticia is much cuter that Micca.

Rick Fielding tends to underdress for these occasions.

You can't play "Truck Driving Man" on the D-41 (a very nice guitar by the way) at 200 beats per minute when your fingers are freezing to the frets.

Brother Fielding and I had a mutual guitar appreciation weekend for our new babies, his D-41 and my Gallagher. (Better than this, oh pickers, it doesn't much get.)

The weather was chilly and dank, but the spirits (notably Jack Daniels) remained high.

Jennifer made us multicolored buttons even though we were "DAY PEOPLE", and for this S and I were most grateful.

Our "Old Time Country Music" workshop was lots of fun. Thanks to Charlie, who's always smiling and Rita and Nancy for making happen.

I'll never forget the look on Kendall's face as he tried to figure out what chord Rick might choose next as we joined him for "Do Re Mi" at the end of Rick's mini-concert. He hung in there though!

cheers, Chance

Max said his brakes went out on his way to work Saturday - so he was stranded as well.

I just finished putting together a lengthy description of my wonderful weekend, complete with names and deeds. Unfortunately, my computer failed just before I hit the Submit button. Grumpfh!!! So, suffice it to say that I had a great time. Endless thanks are due to all who attended and especially to those who made the song circles so fabulous.

It was such a pleasure to meet Morticia. Her sense of humor and great store of lovely songs (beautifully sung, I should add!) made the weekend even more special.

A special thanks to Janie who made my dreams come true. (Don't get ahead of me, folks!) I had written a song for which I had always envisioned an audience participation. Thanks to Janie, it actually happened this weekend. Wow!

Just got home with the blessing that my family is not home yet, easing my re-entry to the real world (not that I don't love them, ya' mind.) Absolutely wonderful, fabulous, etc. etc. Great music. Great fellowship. Great workshops, and too many of them to get to all I wanted. Sunday night we had a HUGE jam and sing-a-round in the cabin. I think everyone who stayed Sunday night was there, leading to an incredibly rich mix of different songs, styles and voices (not to mention that all those bodies created a little island of real warmth in that heatless place.

I went to sleep to the sound of a parlour harp--thought I had died and gone to heaven!

I'll let someone else say more.

For those of you who were there early on Sunday night and heard that little bit of the possum song, as promised the first thing I've done upon arriving home is dig out the tape and type out the lyrics. Then of course I went post it and the 'Cat was down, or at least I couldn't get on. So, finally, here it is.

I'm back home, and in possession of the lost and found. I'll be posting a list of the found items shortly. There were 15 items--up from last year's three. Must have been the great music that made us so sleepless. If you've lost anything, send a message to me via Max's Private Messages(TM).

I just got back from dinner with Big Mick, KarenK, KathWestra, Ferrara, Knithpick, SongsterBob, Lorraine, George Stephens (LaMarca's other half) and Lisa Null (my other half)--the Getaway continues, at least in our neighborhood.

Thanks to everybody who came for coming and sharing your music. My impressions of the Getaway will wait until after I recover.

MMario--sorry the cell phones didn't work; we've now discovered that much of the camp sits low enough in the Susquehanna Valley that cell phones don't get a signal there. Some folks had cell phones that sorked if you went up to the top of the hill (by the white house). But if this happens again, you should just grab WYSIWYG and bring her down to the Getaway. We can always cram in a couple of last minute folks. And she had to go to Harrisburg, too--that's only about an hour from the Getaway!

Sorry to hear about the cars MMario, Bill, Max,..(anyone else). Sounds like my luck with cars transferred to you this year. Hope it moves on to others quickly and the car god smiles on all mudcatters in the future. ;-)

I just wish that for once people would say that Sunday night was nice and quiet and everyone went to bed early (except next year when I WILL stay the whole time. Charlie, Rita, put me to work so I have an excuse to stay the whole time. I'm officially volunteering right now). Darn and Double Darn its hard to believe that it got better than Saturday night, but I'm sure it did.

Vicki mentioned above that Tim bought my very first banjo. It was just gathering dust and I'm glad it will be heard again. It's just an old Kay openback but it sure sounds good when Tim plays it.

Everyone also needs to know that Annie, Jannie, and Dani also sure do nice harmony together. They sang an original Sea Shanty at Saturday night's concert that sounded much prettier than any Shanty sung out on deck. It was awesome. Annie please post the lyrics!

Also, can the waltz and contra-dance be a given next year? I don't know if the dancers had a good time, but it sure was fun playing.

ta ta for now

The pig song was Judy Goodenough's "Tails and Trotters". I was singing it at the aforementioned Sunday night sing-around, and Mick happened to arrive at *just* the right moment and to provide *just* the right reactions. What a guy.

We had a great time. Hope you can come next year.

Hey, guys -- my cell phone works JUST FINE in Silver Spring -- youins got a lot of nerve not calling me to join y'all for dinner tonight. . .

And I only had a 1" screw in my tire on the way up; had to go get the flat fixed in Aberdeen on Sunday. It was one HELL of a weekend for car troubles...

I love spending a weekend with a bunch of silly people who make the most incredible music and fill my heart with a lot of joy. Can't wait to continue the love. . .

Peace and hugs,

Took me 10 hours to get there and less than 8 to get home. I had a great time and caught a cold. Luckily, the symptoms only started Sun and my voice STILL works despite the fact I sang all the way home. It was great to meet new folks and hear them sing.

The jam on Sun in the cabin was ...well, that cabin was FULL. Was great, but I was one of the living dead and went to bed early. In another cabin. I missed Seamus and probably a load of good music.

I had a lot of fun in Rick's Jamming & Accompaniment workshop, but I learn a pile of stuff in Bob Clayton and Rick's Blues Guitar workshop. It opened some doors for me, if that makes any sense.

MMario, we really missed you. I have something of yours, and I'll PM you to explain when I'm conscious.

Great Getaway!!!

JAB said something that has always been true for me:
"... as time goes on it seems that the music becomes almost secondary. Though we see each other in the flesh only briefly each year the real highlight is connecting with friends from before. The bonds and camaraderie that develop over these three brief days each year are what the Getaway is all about."

Yeah, Jim, that is the truth.

Fell in love with Joe Offer all over again.... What a joy to see that smile, and to hear him sing.

I Actually Met Morticia! -- This is something I have longed for ever since I first read one of her Mudcat posts. As I remember, I laughed my head off, then thought something along the lines of, "This woman has a twisted mind and a wicked sense of humor -- I would LOVE to meet her!" She does, and she certainly fit right in....

Memories, bits and pieces....

....Mick playing "Yellow on the Broom" Friday night and me getting the song stuck in my head
....Kendall lending me his 12-string before breakfast Saturday morning to practice "Yellow on the Broom" so I could sing it in the Meet'n'Greet
   ....Being warm enough occasionally
....Standing under the pines with the CarolC & JackTheSailor, singing Rose of Allandale which is a song about love, marriage, mutual support and loyalty and so seemed just about right
   ....Hugging Mick
....Getting to meet Heather Fielding at last
....Hearing the incredible harmonies of the Missing Person Soup Kitchen Gospel Quartet, all three of 'em
....Hearing Ken Schatz, Mary LaMarca and George Stephens sing Kipling in the parlor of the White House; it was GREAT (who knew the WH had such fantastic acoustics?)
....Realizing that the Pub Sing, led by my son Shadowmonk and Lorraine's son Allan, was turning into a resounding success (so to speak), so much fun that we all sang for an extra half hour and were late to dinner
   ....Hearing Jeri's songs
   ....Hugging Mick

Proud moms abounded this year; both Ken and Dan Schatz were there, doing mini concerts and leading workshops, a real family Getaway for Nancy King.

There were plenty of FSGW folks joining in the Saturday late night singing at the Mudcat cabin, and Mudcatters wandering up to the TV Room for the Sunday ditto. That was nice.

Bill informed me that Janice Cole threw two more people including Morticia into hysterics with her torch rendition of "Rubber Ducky." (Was it only last year that Barry Finn literally fell off his seat when he heard it?)

Because of the car troubles etc, I arrived at the Getaway just about wore out and never really recovered, so missed all the fantastic late night singing. Heard about it plenty, though. Tinker, I'm so glad you made that recording.

As usual I'm frustrated because I work for months to set up all those workshops and can never figure out how to get to four workshops in every hour.... From what I'm hearing though, many of the workshops reached a really high level of great music and great fun this year. Thanks and congratulations to all of you who practiced and planned and did a great job leading and joining in, then stayed up half the night for more of the same.

Rita

Wey-ell, y'all...kicks self, I'm back in the Ottawa Valley and must revert to proper second person plural (informal) which of course is "youse" and that, eh.

I just got home half an hour ago, 4 a.m. Had a nice smooth trip (for which I almost feel guilty) and was far enough ahead of schedule that I got a motel room in Kingston and got a few hours sleep before my train-station rendezvous with Emily / Agent Teacup, so we had fun the rest of the way home comparing our weekends (she was at the big bluegrass fest in Louisville, and a lot of people including Hazel Dickens signed her pants, commenting that everyone does autograph collections this way in Japan). We are looking forward to getting the lyrics to some new-to-us morbid train songs like "Please Mr Conductor (don't put me off the train)" and "His Mother Is Dead In the Baggage Coach Ahead" so we can work them into our act...

Oh, I really had a great time at the Getaway, seeing old, middling and brand new friends, putting faces to many long-time Catters--even Max, and Joe, and hi there Mick, Rick, Jeri, Heather, Carol & Rob, Annie, Janie, Kendall, Morticia!!! (you slay me, by the way), Mary, Bill D, Ferrara--thanks for all the hard work of making it happen, Tinker, Gutbucketeer and all the rest, I knew I shouldn't have started a list. It was a lot of fun having a noticeable Canadian contingent (regiment)?, Edmund and Charmion are taking the long way home so will no doubt check in later.

But me, I gotta go get some sleep now. I didn't get a lot since I left home on Friday.

I stopped this afternoon long enough to walk a couple of miles on the Appalachian Trail. That was a nice break.

Love to all

Willie-O

I want to add my thanks to all the wonderful music makers who made this, our third Getaway but my first as a 'Cat, a memorable weekend of not only singing and friendship but also excellent dancing. Mr. Mantid and I loved trying our different styles in the TV room till wee hours on Saturday and the gym for both the workshops and many of the song circles. I'm so glad to hear that the musicians had just as much fun as we did and look forward to next year.

Awesome! Boy, did Honey and I have a great time! He was able to play the cot (small bed) while Tim played "Wipe Out"! Now, I understand that this is not folk music...yet. But who knows. Maybe in a hunnert years.

It was good to see all my Mudcat friends, meet a few new ones. I adored Morticia. She is so great and funny. Wasting an hour with kendall was warming on a cold day. Everything was wonderful. Hugging Mick ;-)

Hugging Allan, Hugging Willie-O, Oh all the hugging I got to do.

..and the music, oh my! Just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes.

Next year.

FAN-FRIGGIN'-TASTIC......again!

But first of all....I FORGOT MY PANTS! Jeez Charlie, those ones with the fancy belt (one of the first things I ever carved) COULD be mine. Now how does one walk off without yer pants? Very carefully.

Yeah, it was very chilly, but well worth the 12 1/2 hour drives each way. Great company, great songs, and our musical extended family grows once again.

Had my first taste of CORN LIKKER, and it was awfulllll! From the looks on the faces of the other three people sharing from the little jug, I can assume that t'was I that was outta step! Considering my favourite 'Getaway' beverage was the purple 'Jim Jones' juice, I guess 'drinkin' just ain't my thing.

I was really sorry not to see Pene there, and Mario, I've left your carved strap from the auction with Jeri. She'll mail it to you (saves customs people from opening the package). Sorry you had to leave early Max, and sorry I wasn't there when Seamus Kennedy dropped in.

Some brief thoughts.

Played some great instruments....Dick's and Kendall's Appolonios, Fortunato's Gallagher, Charmion's Cox, and Jeri's newly set up 00-17.

Three days of frozen fingers!! Yoiks I AM getting old!

The most all-encompassing emotion came from talking to my friends who've also gone through some tough life threatening health issues. S'good to be alive and pickin' eh?

Cheers (and probably more blathering to follow)

Hey, Judy! I was hoping it was "Tails & Trotters"! I just played that for another pig lover this week--great song! I have it recorded by BMT. We heard Gordon & Carol last Friday in concert & I was reflecting that hearing you sing Bill Staines' "All God's Critters..." in your livingroom lo those many years ago was my (then unknown) intro to folk music. Thank you!

Rita, I can remember why you mentioned hugging Mick more than once; his hugs warrant it!!!

Edmund and Charmion checking in Tuesday at 1300 hr more or less. The rest of the Canadian regiment is now back on home station, much to the loud delight of the resident cats.

Great weekend, truly a getaway. Learned plenty of new stuff, bought more CDs than we really should have with our lightweight money; fortunately, didn't have to explain our spending habits to the Canada Customs guy who was already mad enough at Charmion for driving through the booth without stopping. You really don't ever want to hear the siren they set off when you do that. (The light was green and no one was home, so what was one to think? If it wasn't Free Day For Folkies, it should have been!)

It's such a pleasure to have faces and voices to go with all those Mudcat handles, and a more expanded musical universe. It was so hard to leave.

More later, when we have had lunch and more time to digest the experience.

I just got my first idea for one of next years workshops!...Something like "Barnyard Animals"....we know LOTS of pig songs...and cow songs...and mule songs....and duck songs..(a local group did almost an hour of duck songs a few years ago with no planning!)
It just might have to be scheduled right before lunch...*grin*

anyway, I am 'almost' human again after sleeping 11 hours, and am musing on what joys of the weekend to report first.
One of the highlights for me is always the singing of Barry Finn. He does wondrous things to songs! And this year, he took a nice little sea song many of us know, "Bye-Bye,My Roseanna", and sent chills up my spine! Wow!...that song IS more than just a neat 'goodbye' song, I just never noticed till Barry's voice and passion opened it up for me. (You know, the highest compliment I can pay a singer is to say that they make the song the focus...not the singer, and several people did that for me this weekend. I knew it was Barry singing, but I was not hearing it as "Barry"....well, most of you know what I mean). Morticia did that with a lovely/funny song about a poor suitor on a ladder...sure, it was Morticia singing, but it was the story that shone, and I appreciate Morty the more for it..(and as I told her, I didn't hear it as a 'dialect' song...was perfectly clear!)

You know...that Sunday night sardine-sing in the cabin has been mentioned before, but the amazing thing was how people constantly adapted, moved, made room, took turns, paid attention to who needed seats etc....and STILL kept the fun & music going! Tinker ran her camera(and others ran it FOR her when necessary), giant harp arrived and was accomodated, a blind woman arrived and was found a place (our own Gail, who sang the very appropriate "You Can't Keep Me from Singing"), local folk and Mudcatters all mixed in with amazing results!

We had crafts for sale, mushrooms for sale, the silent auction, CD's from Camsco and others for sale, instruments and cases for sale, displays of crafts like Rick's leatherwork that can be ordered....what have I missed?

Camp Escher Ramblewood is a hilly place, but rides were available for those who couldn't easily hike the hill and the camp was very reasonable about allowing us to drive and park where needed for these situations. (They fed us pretty well too!)

Gee...enuf fer now!...(you can see I am more awake today *grin*)...let's see what the late-arrivers-home have to say...it may remind me of more that needs saying....suffice it to say, we sorta mostly had fun...

I had a blast, too! One memorable moment was when, on the way to Judy's "American Traditional" workshop, I encountered Rick and Kendall with guitars, and Carly and Jeri as added vocals, just outside the kitchen door. I hauled out my new old banjo (1925 Gibson Style 0, thanks for asking) and managed to get into "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" well-enough. Then Rick started "Paul and Silas (All Night Long)" and we nailed that harmony to the tree, we did!

After that song, Rick pointed out something (paraphrased) "If we all lived in a small town, about now we'd be saying, 'Hot Damn! We got us a band!'" Rick, we DO have us a band, small town or not.

And the band played on....

I heard that unbroken circle...seems Rick developed a special hangout'n jam spot right next to the dumpsters.

Tinker took great pains to get an awful lot of video footage in the infamous Mudcat "Cabin", we're waiting for the blackmail notes. As for anything I might have "said" on tape, its amazing what you can do with video editing software.

And Charmion, I am SHOCKED that you would try to run the border! That's the place where the green light means "stop!"

I've been skimming the tapes and I'm glad to say that Tails and Trotters was captured for others to share. Me thinks perhaps Big Mick might even blush a bit (but the lighting in the cabin was dim)... Now in the very, very early morning hours after a few wee drams of Cock of the North there are some shaky moments. But Ricks concert and Kathy Westra's are both reasonably done. The barn had surprisingly good lighting. I haven't been brave enough to review any end of the night footage.... the one's with the interesting camera angles.

It was great that you came by Seamus, we weren't expecting to see you.

Also a wonderful couple that I had the pleasure of spending quite a few hours jamming with, Lucy Goldberg (singer/fiddler) and David Scheim, harpist extraordinaire. David can really improvise on that gargantuan instrument, and he can retune it faster than I've ever seen done. Lucy sings in a very striking fashion, I asked her where she developed her voice and she lived "deep in Appalachia" for a long time. Perhaps we'll get them to visit on the Cat.

Just home. Dropped Kendall and Morty off. And too damn tired to say much except that I feel like a kid after the birthday party..."But I don't want it to be over!"

Morticia is too funny for words. I will leave it to her to tell the tales of various waitresses we endured. The best line (to Kendall in horror from a lady with no sense of humor): "Are these ears garbage cans?"

So many familiar faces. So much wonderful music. So much laughing and crying.

Too many Getaway highlights to tell. Being chased off to bed by Allan at 4:30 AM on Saturday and being lulled to sleep by "All The Pretty Little Horses" on Sunday. The "Pitiful Songs" workshop and a man named Ron (from that Gospel quartet minus one?) who knew at least as many tearjerkers as I. The Old Time Country workshop with nothing after 1947. Kathy Westra almost apologizing for starting her workshop with a tune from 1903 only to discover that everyone knew the "silly" chorus.

And a new Mudcat friend. Homeless is a treasure even if he doesn't prefer older women. In keeping with the Getaway tradition, he arrived stating that he only knew one or two songs and couldn't sing them anyway then discovered that he could and would sing and had at least a dozen more. He is a tall cuddly young man with a gentle soul. Don't miss a chance to meet him...oh...and his girlfriend too.

And jeez Sins, I think that was Dave Diamond that chased everyone to bed--more accurately, requested that we cease making a joyful loudish noise--to Barrys complete astonishment--unless you're talking about another 4:30 a.m. (the Sunday morning after the Saturday night) incident I did not witness. If that's the case, no details please. ;)=

Hi! Willie. Allan was a bit more discreet. He sang a song about saying goodbye with the obvious intention of getting people to leave. I was already snuggled in when Dave asked how long we intended to keep making music (noise?).

But as long as you brought me back in - I too am afraid of forgetting someone. But...Bill Cameron is an amazing musician. I had met him two years ago at a shanty sing in Portland and thought him shy and reserved. Must have been a bad night. He seems to be able to play anything, has a beautiful voice, an inexhaustable supply of songs, and a very dry sense of humor. Buy his CD.

Kendall's workshop was folk music at its best. His voice simply would not cooperate. But in stepped Rick Fielding, Ken Shatz(?), Big Mick, and Morticia to turn it into a funny and moving tribute to our Captain who still chaired the session and introduced the music with stories and poetry. There was a bit of hero worship in the air offset by Kendall's self-deprecation and modesty. And best of all, Morticia managed to upstage him with her "silver statuette" story.

More moments as they come.

Ron might have been the tall guy with the white hair and cane (due to a car crash right before the Getaway)?

I enjoyed meeting Homeless and his lady. (I apologise for forgetting her name.) His songs were wonderful and if he really doesn't sing much in front of people, it sure ain't because he can't do it well!

Kendall's workshop was one of the highlights, probably because it wasn't organised. It just sort of flowed, and was filled with music and humor. Sort of like Kendall. It was Dan Schatz in that workshop. Plays guitar and sings gently, unlike brother Ken who has less hair, sings unaccompanied and sounds remarkably like the narrator on the cartoon (Cartoon Channel) "Sheep in the Big City."

While I had not expected to work so hard in three class/sessions I was involved in, it was worth it.

Several ideas for next year popped into my head as I drove home.

1. Dennis Cook and I had an interesting discussion over the cheapest, most effective, small sound rig, either one of us could dream up, and I plan to take the idea further to actually build such a rig for introduction next year, with a target price of under $200, including mics and speaker stands, to fit into a gym bag, have at least two inputs, two speakers, and 20-50 watts. I think I can do it.

2. The Contra dance was fun for the musicians, and I hope for the dancers, but next year we should start sooner, come up with a good list of prearranged tunes, email or mail the music in advance, and have a get-to-gether some time before the actual dance. Willie-O did a good job of leading the group, and is a leading candidate for next years First Fiddle (or mando, as you will).

3. If I do a sound mixing course next year, it would be best to actually set up a sound studio in one of the several un-used cabins, and then let people who wanted to try out the equipment combinations, do so by appointment or at least not in conflict with other sessions in the same area, as we had in the Gym.

4. The double electric blanket was the absolute way to go, and a lot easier to cart in than the electric heaters. But the guy in cabin attached to mine (F) was the loudest snorer I have ever heard; (think dinosaur eating it's young alive). But with the ear plugs and head wrap, I had the Vibro-Bed experience, and extremely pleasant dreams of shooting large wild animals.

Re: ContraJam - Claymore, I agree with you all the way. I asked for a tune list early but I guess it wasn't early enough. Willie-O did an EXCELLENT job and managed to find tunes that we all knew despite the on-the-spot and never-played-together-before nature of the workshop.

Every session develops its own tunebook...a once a year one might do so too.

Hey, we only actually had to play about six tunes.

We (I use the term loosely) can probably play the same ones next year, maybe a few more.

And Claymore, I enjoyed meetin ya as well, and if I get there next year I would like to take in some of your technical workshops.

Take care. W-O

But Jed -- you WERE there! You must have been; we sold a TON of your CDs at the auction. How on earth could that have happened if you weren't there????   :-D

Just to let y'all know, if you didn't hear the announcement on Sunday after dinner (or you weren't even there. . .) we made about $450 for the scholarship fund with the silent auction. I'm sure we'll do even better next year because Mmario will have the shawls he didn't bring this year and other people will have all the stuff they forgot, and everyone will be gainfully employed and bring money...

I'm thrilled to have met all y'all I hadn't met before and was totally tickled to see those I have met before. Friday night was just the biggest, warmest hugfest I think I've seen in a very long time. The joy and the laughter were infectious and delicious.

See you next year. . .

Well, ditto to everything everybody said. I can't think of much I like to do better then singing, and it's such a treat to do it all weekend long with some of my favorite people.
Wish I could have seen MMario and Jeff and Sandy and Caroline, and that I had more than two minutes to spend with that guy named Max. It was a real relief to see Rick and Kendall in good health.
Please, somebody tell Karen K that I made it home safe. She worries about me.

Claymoore, you broke me up with your comments about " the loudest snorer I have ever heard; (think dinosaur eating it's young alive)."

For those who don't know, the snoring problem at the Getaway has been so bad in some cabins that Dennis Cook brings a big box of ear plugs to pass out to folks who are desperate for sleep.

Good suggestions for next year, too, Claymoore and others. I've already started a notebook because folks keep making suggestions. I love it, that's the kind of enthusiasm that makes the Getaway what it is....

Max, oh, Max, and MMario too, so sorry you got caught buy the automobile-hating gremlins! They were quite busy last weekend but you can't keep a good Getaway down.

Ron Davies will be most gratified that Jeri mistook him for one of the featured guests. He's a very gifted musician. I suspect there aren't many folk violists out there, but Ron improvises wonderful harmonies. He does a lot of jamming with Susan Hills(clarinet), David Scheim (harp) and Lucy Goldberg (guitar). Some of you may have heard them doing Spoon River during the Saturday concert. He was also lead "fiddler" at the Waltz Jam & Dance.

Max, thanks for the pictures. Hope Bill downloads his soon.

Kudos to Allan C. for being a great facilitator at the cabin sing-arounds. And from all of us ladies in Cabin 9--a huge hug for having a tarp to cover the colorful but absolutely transparent shower curtains in our very co-ed bath!!!!

Ron Davies, I know you lurk here. Come on in and post the lyrics to that really funny lethargy song you sang Sunday night!

One of the sillier moments--Tinker (with video camera in hand) catching Dani and Sinsull trying to brush their teeth in the bathroom--gales of giggles of embarrassment--and then everyone in the Sardine room streaming through the bathroom to find out what the heck was causing all the merriment....

The light in Joe Offer's eyes as he sang and and the look of absolute delight on his face as he watched Judy Cook sing her wonderful funny songs.

Kendall getting so tickled at his own joke late one night that he couldn't quite get it all out.

And many, many more wonderful hours and moments.

Ron and I had something really cool going on with a break in some song. I actually know who Ron is from the days when I lived there. I wasn't at the gospel workshop and was just guessing.

Dennis is responsible for the ear plugs!!!! Saved my life. Well, maybe they really saved someone elses. (Just kidding.) ThankyouThankyouThankyou!

Janie, I think I'll refer to that jam from now on as "the Sardine Jam." I think folks might have been a little warmer there than if there'd been any actual airspace between us.

Songster Bob - the Trash Pickers/Dumpster Devils - HotDamn! Paul and Silas was wonderful. Wish that had lasted a bit longer.

Thought I'd be in trouble with Rick for not having progressed on guitar faster than I have, but he said nice things and I can't remember feelng incredibly stupid about anything. I felt a lot more confident about playing guitar AND fiddle. I think it's the climate of friendship and encouragement and the fact I'm learning about a whole lot more than just music from folks like those who come to the Getaway.

Nothin' more to add other than it was an absolutely LUVERLY time. So many different personalities and approaches and the variety in senses of humour is amazing as well.

BUT......I do want to mention something that probably doesn't really fit in a "Getaway memories" thread. The work that Jeri has done on guitar should be an inspiration to anyone with any kind of digit deficiency. She's missing the end of her left hand index finger and has learned a lot of difficult chord positions with her middle, ring and pinky fingers. There is a LOT of effort needed for this. Actually, perhaps I'll start a thread (we've had them in the past...but folks like 'current' views) about learning an instrument with some stumbling blocks to overcome.

And once again, thanks to Max for being responsible for all this. It's simply mindblowing at times.

Cheers

Rick

I'm still not recovered, but, I need to babble for a bit. There were so many highs as to be impossible to note here. But, there is one that only I got to experience; the trip down and back with Mary and Terri. I'm just so pleased that Morticia (Terri) could get here for this bash. I know I have thoroughly enjoyed her, and, from the feedback, all hands love her as I do!
These two picked on me all the time, but, if they had had half a dozen others, it would have been an even match!
I do need to mention that having Dan and Rick help bail me out at my session calls for very high thanks. And, to Terri for joining us at a moments notice. She threatened to kill me, but, she was smiling, so, I think she didn't mean it.
Thanks so much to the Getaway crew for inviting me. You are aces in my book.

Well, funny you should ask. Early last winter, I was driving home from work in the evening, it was pretty cold, and I picked up this Indian hitchhiker named Jim McKenzie who was heading out west. I got him out of the city and about another twenty miles down highway 7. By an interesting coincidence we both had black baseball caps with the word Woods on them -- except mine was cloth and his was leather and actually said "Woodlands". Somewhere along the line he decided we should trade hats. I told him it wasn't necessary but it was OK with me if he wanted to trade. So we did.

Very durable hat. Little hot in the summer. And I see now, kind of overwhelming in a closeup.

Sitting here in front of the computer. I have always loved this place,............still do.........but at this moment it seems like a very poor subsitute for the way I felt surrounded by my "extended musical family" (great characterization, Rick!)of Mudcatters and FSGW'ers at my favorite gathering. For those of you who haven't been, I would urge you to start planning now for next year. You will never regret it.

I really must start with Morticia. She absolutely charmed the hell out of everyone she with her smile, her humor, and her merciless wit. She sang "16 Stone" and I nearly wet meself. She also did a parody on the Friday Overnight Song Session that almost made me do the same. Having now met her and Micca, I can't wait to meet the rest of the 'catters from her neck of the woods. NOTE TO ALL BRITISH MUDCATTERS. The wee women dished about all of you, and she was merciless...............hahahahahaha................just kidding, well mostly kidding............heeheeheeheehee.

One of the things I love most is when I am leading a workshop and I play a song. I start out, then the miraculous sound of fiddles, harp, Willie's mando, and the wonderful Getaway voices, all start filtering in. So much talent!! I sang "Red is the Rose" and the chorus and supporting instrumentation sounded so good that I just quit singing on the choruses and listened while I played. Pure, unadulterated enjoyment.

Kendall.................wow. Such love and admiration expressed for him. The only time I saw anything like it was when they did a gathering for Sandy and Caroline. If I could have a tenth of that much respect before I die, I could cross over happy with what I had accomplished. Just goes to show that it isn't the singing that we all love about him, it is the man that he is.

Rick continues to challenge me to be a better musician. I was sitting in on the workshop that he and Bob Clayton did on accompanying music. Rick grabs me and tells me to play mando. I said "Rick, I have never played mando". He says, "You do now" and has Tim (Vixen's hubby" and teach me a couple of chords in the appropriate key and then we play. Rick is one of those natural teachers. I envy those of you close enough to him to take lessons from him. You are in the presence of a natural musician and a natural teacher. I am envious.

It was so great to see Bill Cameron (Willie O) again. And it looks like we might see him this summer at a Canadian Festival. And made a new friend in Wayne (known as Homeless here) and his lady.

Karen Kobela, my very special friend, why don't I get to hear more of your singing. You have such a beautiful voice to go with the beautiful personality of yours. Have I EVER seen a greater smile anywhere? I about lost it when you were playing the kazoo during a pickup session with Rick in the cafeteria area, he wanted you to do a kazoo break……….you should have seen that wonderful, impish smile you gave him over the top of the kazoo while you were shaking your head "no". I am chuckling as I write this just thinking about it………………LOL.

Each day there are workshops, and if I had one criticism it would be that they are ALL so damn good and valuable, that you can't get to them. Solution? Keep going every year until you get them all....which will be never. Will I ever get to Lisa Null's vocal workshop? I am going to next year, by golly.

You should have heard Annie, Dani, and Janie sing the shanty that Annie wrote. Priceless. I am truly in love with our North Carolina ladies. The Getaway would be a poorer place without them.

Tinker............what a pearl of great worth. She sings like an angel, her smile lights up the room, and a personality to match. And a wicked sense of humor as well.

A couple of questions. Is Alan C getting more talented every time I see him, or what? And he was good to begin with.   My buddy, Barry Finn…………..where the hell did that voice come from? It is just an amazing thing to listen to him sing. But I am going to kick him in his shanty Irish arse when I see him for leaving without saying goodbye. You owe me a hug, little brother, and anyone who knows me knows I take that debt seriously.

To those that didn't make it, let me tell you that you have missed something very special. These gatherings and the memories of them will survive us all. This event, the unique mix of personalities and talent, the workshops, the great love of our music and tunes, have all combined to create these events that will be talked about for a very long time. I remember standing in the corner of the room looking at all of these folks and the instruments, listening to the diversity of music, and thinking to meself that I am a very fortunate man to have friends and memories such as these. I get home and my wife and daughter want a minute by minute description.

I especially want to thank the FSGW and its officers and activists for welcoming and incorporating the Mudcatters into this event. Charley Baum, Lisa Null, Bob Clayton, Jennifer Woods, Lorraine, Mary and George, Kath Westra, Rita, Bill D………….damn, who am I forgetting?……….you are all wonderful I am going to join FSGW, if for no other reason than to be able to be in the company of such fine folks and folkies.

I must really say something special to Kath Westra. She is the one that really introduced me to all these wonderful people that I mentioned before. Thanks, my very dear friend. You are so special.
All the best,

Mick

As was said elsewhere it is a problem to name names without leaving out someone important. I am sure that will be the case here as I find myself wanting to thank so many for their special contributions to my Getaway experience. As it was at the Getaway, I will make no effort to separate 'Catters from FSGW folks. I am happy to report that those distinctions have been blurred forever.

Thanks to:

Ron - whose amazing ability with the viola was matched by his memory of lyrics - especially those of that wonderful song (mentioned above) about dreary, long folksongs which he portrayed so well.

Dani - who set aside her fears and dreads to join Annie and Janie on stage for that hillarious shanty. It was a joy to see her on stage at last.

Charlie - whose "Pharoah" spiritual/holler was one of the coolest things I have ever heard.

Willie O - whose almost expressionless delivery of his music belies the soul he puts into it.

Gail - who shared so many of her English childhood ditties and music hall songs as well as her remarkable sense of humor. I thank her for all of it.

Mantid(s) - especially the male of the species who shared a song his father helped to invent and which Kendall was amazed to recognize.

Keith - whose widely varied song store included "Everglades" which he sang after I went to bed (but I heard it anyway, thank you!).

Mick - whose sense of humor is his greatest gift and whose songs so often touch my soul.

David - who can pull more tunes out of his enormous harp that anyone could ever imagine. There was a moment during Sunday night when his playing combined with two or three fiddles, a viola, a mandolin and perhaps a guitar or two. I wish I could tell you which tune they played; but whatever it was put me closer to heaven than a living being has the right to be.

Homeless - who emerged from behind his shyness to share some wonderful songs with us all.

- to a small boy who so excitedly accosted me in the parking lot to tell me all about a bug his sister had found.

Dick - who finally remembered all of the verses to "Dropkick Me, Jesus, Through the Goalposts of Life" and sang it just for me.

Sinsull - who shared songs that rarely have seen the light of day. I don't know where she gets these things!

Tinker - whose streetwalker ballads and blues were absolutely delightful.

Max - who, like all of us, made the effort to extricate himself from "real life" long enough to share some of his music. I'm sorry that his worldly obligations and car trouble prevented his being there more.

Morticia - who, besides sharing her wonderful humor and parodies, took a few minutes to catch me up on happenings at home and to speak of other things beyond the here and now. That was special.

- to the guy whose name I have mentally filed under "D", but cannot recall. I found myself really appreciating his proclivity toward collecting odd instruments. I was fascinated by his explanations of the mechanics of the "small pipes". Last year I learned how to operate a hurdy-gurdy.

Rick - who, despite my overall ignorance, made me think for a moment or two that I really understood what he patiently tried to teach to me. It is probably one of those kinds of things that will someday produce an "Ahah!" moment. I hope.

Bill D. - whose wry humor seems to be part and parcel to every song he knows -- and he seems to know them all!

Judy - who can take a song and turn it into a small play by her wonderful use of facial expressions and mime. She is a joy to watch as well as to hear.

Thanks to all these and so many more for making memories that will live in my soul forever.

Chiming in on my own lazy schedule...another fun year, managed to survive the unexpectedly colder Saturday. Assorted highlights:

-- The Pub Sing workshop (definitely should be a keeper for next year!). Lots of raucous, rollicking fun!
-- The Jewish Songs workshop. OK, I'm biased since I lead it, but I thought we got a nice mix of songs; some Hebrew, some English, even a bit of Yiddish.
-- Ken Schatz's concert (actually, the only one I managed to catch...)
-- Having Dwayne and Sheila Thorpe back again this year!
-- The Kipling workshop. I've been wanting to work some of filk writer/performer Leslie Fish's Kipling settings into my Open Sing/Getaway reportoire. Sheryl and I did her "Pict Song" and "Danegeld" settings, which seemed to go over well.
-- Jan's (Ron Davies' wife) song in the Sea Songs session, which has been earworming for the past two days (that's the "and he played his ukelele as the ship went down" song with all the hand motions).

And of course seeing all the Mudcat folks and the FSGW folks and the other folks I only see at the Getaway. 'Twas great singing with y'all again and meeting Morticia and WillieO and the other new folks!

(And I promise I'll try and make more than two or three posts between now and next Getaway!!)

I keep coming back to this thread to relive a lovely weekend. I keep saying "Yes! That was Great!" to everyone's favorite memories.

One highlight for me that hasn't been mentioned much was The Missing Person Soup Kitchen Gospel Quartet - three of the nicest folks I've ever met. Their concert Sunday morning was super: tight, true harmonies that did not in the least obscure the melodies; syncopations, Bill's incredible bass, and lyrics like that Lotus Dickey song about Adam & Eve "pair in a paradise, bare there were they."

Another memory I don't want to lose was the amazing almost full moon (the one in the sky!). Did anyone snap a picture of that? I am enjoying the pictures - looking forward to seeing yours Bill D.

I echo Judy's comments. I'm being reminded of things like Jan's "Played the Ukelele" song and hearing about things I wasn't there for. I knew I was gonna kick myself for missing the Kipling workshop - I REALLY wanted to go - but I was too worn out to trudge up that hill.

The moon was great! Rita, please schedule that again next year.

There were two sessions going on simultaneously Fri night in the dining room. One of them involved Ken Schatz, Barry Finn and lovely old folk songs such as "Poison Ivy" and "Love Potion #9."

If anyone on earth should record a CD who hasn't already, it's Dan Schatz. "...or could it be we were just boys, in the old days." I LOVE that song!!! As fine as any modern song I've heard, finer than most. In my opinion.

Oh, and how could I not have mentioned sharing Camp Songs with Judy Cook. She is the only one I've ever met who knows the songs I can't find anywhere else. At her American Traditional songs workshop I actually found someone else who knows Dicky Bird..... but with just enough folk process to keep it intesting. And then in the dinning room when we broke out into Baby Owlet and sang it through while she instanally catalogued the variences.... By that stage on Sunday my brain was too fried to really notice...Judy's only found one other person who knows Baby Owlet... Jean Ritchie... Wonder how it made it's way to a Girl Scout Camp in the Berkshire Hills???

I've started going through the video and cataloging what is on each. This takes more discipline than I can muster. If I stop to watch each song...well there's about eight hours worth .... more later.

As always the Getaway was great fun for us (Dean, Carly and Samuel), too. A few of my highlights:

Seeing lots of friends, old and new, that we see all too infrequently.

Hearing the Soup Kitchen Quartet. I still get a smile on my face thinking about their concert on Sunday. Great stuff, and great people!

Rick Fielding. Although I didn't get a chance to hear much of him this year, he accounted for two of my family's highlights: singing with Carly outside the dining hall, and leading the Accompaniment and Jam Workshop that Samuel loved.

Having Samuel tell me that one of the best parts of the weekend was playing in the above mentioned workshop. He got to try playing hammer dulcimer with a bunch of other people and even got to take the lead on a couple of times through one song. Imagine that, he was more impressed with that than with playing Magic or Dungeons and Dragons! Maybe there's hope for the younger generation after all.

The Parodies Workshop which produced a bunch of new ones. Unfortunately, they tend to go out of my head about as fast as I hear them, but I do remember laughing a lot.

Watching some other children (Ken, Dan, and Darriel) having grown up.

I knew Jeri was talented, but did not understand how varied that talent is until I saw Bill D.'s photo. (Daggumit, I shoulda stayed longer in the Dining Hall Friday night.)

Annie e-mailed me--she's been lurking on this thread--worried that Dani will suffer from now being joined at the hip with the two of us. I say Dani can keep herself in plenty enough trouble without our help, but we adopted her against her will and our better judgement and we are stuck with each other. Singing Annie's shanty was great fun, but until we saw our three names posted together here we hadn't realized we should have called ourselves the "Eee" sisters.

Mick, much I wish she would move here to the Tarheel State, Annie actually lives on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Still floating on air from the effects of the Get-Away,

Janie

This was my 32nd FSGW Getaway, which says something about how I
treasure this event, this music and this community. Sometimes I've
wondered if the magic might fade-after all, nothing could top last
year-but every year has brought me fresh joys. Old friends, new friends, laughter, and music so emotionally powerful that I am a hopeless addict.

As Dean relates above, some of my own favorite moments include the
interlude by the dumpster-thank you, Rick! and watching my son Samuel's face light up as he told me about playing along in the jam-thank you again, Rick!

Seeing Kendall again was a joy, and I, along with everyone else in earshot, was knocked off my chair by the Gospel Quartet. I enjoyed so many people, and so many songs... but I must mention how thrilled and moved I was when I heard Sheila Thorpe sing. I've heard her sing over many years, and always enjoyed her, but she was amazing last
weekend.

More later.
Love to all, Carly Gewirz

Dean & Carly, I was in that workshop and Sam has every right to beam. I didn't even know he played HD. Rick said "take it," and he did. Did a great job. Now, what song was it we were playing?!?! (Only ran through it about 500 times.)

So the red haired kid is yours eh? He jumped into that solo like a pro....he's gonna be a 'picker'. Say hello to him for me.

Jeri, it was "I'm On My Way"......and yes...I got sick of it too...but we got the whole darn room pickin on it! Next time I'll try "You Light Up My Life" or "Tie A Yellow Ribbon".

Jeri,
Yeah, I can't remember either except that it was a gospel song with simple chords in the key of G.
Sam has really only been playing the hammer dulcimer since this summer. He actually has become an avid cymbalom fan, but we, of course, don't have a cymbalom. I mentioned to Sam that I owned a hammer dulcimer, and he said, "You do?! Where?" I replied, "In your closet." He dragged it out, we tuned it up, and he was off. He's learned a few tunes and has practised playing along with the cymbalom on the CD's by Harmonia (the slow parts).

JAB,

Your mind being what it is, I will kindly refrain from comment on your last post *BG*.

Also, when I said the song "Who Broke the Lock" might be a Charlie Poole song, I meant Riley Puckett. (I thought you looked a little stunned when I said that.) As it turns out, it is "traditional" and Riley Puckett does a version of it. I found several variations here on Mudcat (why I couldn't find them before the Get-Away is a testament to my incompetence as a researcher--I found them right off when I got home.)

Most memorable spots for me...
The look on Vixen's face in Rick's accompaniment workshop when, after only a few minutes of instruction, she realized she was playing right along with him.

Hearing Darriel say, sometime around the time he was leading the Pub Sing workshop, "What's happening to me? I used to hate folkies. Now I am one."

Thinking something along the same line when I realized I was taking part in a song circle.

Being surprise at how many people made a point to introduce themselves to me, and how quickly I felt at home with so many.

Singing where someone else could hear for the first time since high school, and having the entire room join in singing rather than the entire room laughing at me.

It was wonderful to see, once again, all of the people I met before at last year's Getaway and in other contexts. I was disappointed that Max didn't stay very long, and I sure missed seeing MMario and Jeff (Pene).

It was a treat getting to meet Morticia. What an amazingly powerful and clear, bell-like voice coming from such a small woman. And a wonderful dead-pan delivery on the song parodies.

I finally got to actually meet Gutbucketeer, Fortunato, LaMarca, and Annamil and Glen face to face. Fine, gracious people, all of them. I somehow managed to miss doing that last year, even though we were all there at the same time, and in some instances, in the same room.

It was great meeting Willie O, and Homeless and his girlfriend. In person, Willie O reminds me a little bit of Little Hawk. I think I would love to have an opportunity to be in the same room at the same time with both of them. I somehow managed to miss meeting, or even seeing Edmund and Charmion. I don't know how that happened seeing as how I'm always on the lookout for Canadians anyway ;-)

Charlie Baum amazes me. The impression I have of him is that he is never without a smile on his face. And the people who worked so hard (in some cases, despite being profoundly tired, like Ferrara), did an excellent job, once again. It was, in my opinion, a wonderful and very successful Getaway.

Highlights for me were Friday evening in the dining hall listening to folks jamming, and the Saturday night jam in the Mudcat cabin. My (our) time at the Getaway was somewhat abreviated (didn't stay Sunday night) because Rob and I had to get back to Shepherdstown and finish packing my stuff for the big move to Georgia on Monday.

Biggest highlight for me, without question, was when my dear, sweet husband sang a song about me (us) that he wrote himself at the Saturday night concert. (And watching the people in the row in front of me craning their necks looking around the room, and saying, "who's Carol?"

For me one of the highlights was Friday night, as people streamed in, all the hugging and grinning and greeting and hugging and smiling and playing and reconnecting and hugging...we have got to be some of the hugging-est people on the planet, which is pure manna as far as I'm concerned.

The energy on Friday night felt somehow electrified -- perhaps it was just me projecting my utter joy at being there. Even though I haven't hung out here [Mudcat] much in the past year, I was tickled to meet the likes of Homeless (who I probably could have talked to for a couple more hours if standing up weren't so hard at 3:00 a.m.) and Morticia and Willie-O.

And I just GOTTA ask -- are there ANY Mudcat women who do NOT have a crush on Big Mick??????? I mean, how can you do anything but love a great, big teddy bear with a heart the size of Wyoming like that?????? And Mick, when are you going to bring the incredible woman who puts up with you the rest of the year so she can see why you're so crazy about us the same way we're crazy about you?

Love you all,

Well, it was just grand, thanks. As always. I've been to a lot of Getaways, and sometimes the weather or the facilities or something else is less than perfect, but we ALWAYS have a fine time.

To me, the music doesn't really become secondary -- after all, it's what brings us together in the first place -- but the people become equally important. Some of my dearest friends are people I see one weekend a year. It really is a musical extended family.

Sorry folks had so many car problems. Like Willie-O, I feel almost guilty. My only problem was that Ken and I took so long saying goodbye and hugging everyone (though Kendall snuck out before I could catch him -- watch out next time, Kendall...), that Ken missed his train and had to wait an hour for the next one.

Wish I'd had more of a chance to talk to Morticia. Well, maybe next time. You WILL come back, won't you, Morty?

As for those dreams of having an audience sing along, you've come to the right place. I was remarking to someone after the Sunday concert that FSGW is well-known for singing along. "Ma Schneyer used to beat us," said Dick Rodgers. And it's true, you know. We learned from the best.

Of course it was extra special for me this year because both Ken and Dan were there. "Some kids turn out good no matter what you do to 'em," said Kendall.

Thanks for the pix, Max! When are we gonna get yours, Bill?

By the way, notice that fancy sweatshirt Rick's wearing, with the classy LFPS logo? Too bad there's no picture of the back, where it was spelled out: "Lane, Fielding, Patterson and Swan, Layabouts for Hire."

I managed somehow not to get a copy of Jed's CD, which I hear good things about. Can I get it from you, Jed, or from Camsco?

Special good thoughts for Lisa Sailer, 11, who spent most of the Getaway weekend in the hospital, after suffering a nasty broken arm in a playground fall. Mend quickly, Lisa!

Two of the people I missed most last year were back this time -- Dave Diamond and Dwayne Thorpe. What a pair!

I could babble on forever, but it's getting late. Love you all!

Nancy

You're usually contagious 24 hours before the symptoms start and the incubation period is 12 hours to 5 days.
Theoretically, it could have been me, but as colds are passed by liquid - not air - and I didn't get snotty till I was almost home AND I didn't French kiss either one of you, it's more likely we got exposed at roughly the same time.

CarolC:

Now I'm feeling all guilty. I saw you at several of the sessions and at the session in the Mudcat cabin. I knew who you were from your wedding pictures that were posted on Mudcat. I should have said hello, but I guess I have too much of that mid-Atlantic reserve and was waiting for the right opportunity. Charmion and I did get to talk to JtS though. I will be sure to say hello at the next music event we both attend.

It was wonderful meeting everybody and putting faces to the names I knew through the Mudcat. There were so many highlights:

- the singing of Ken and Dan Schatz
- hearing Me and My Uncle from Lucy Goldberg. That one is definitely going into my songbook
- singing with Morticia and Charmion at our workshop and learning obscure Spanish-American war lyrics from Dick Greenhaus
- having the bass singer from the Missing Person Soupkitchen Gospel quartet take the trouble to explain singing bass harmony to me

I hope I get to see some of you again at Old Songs.

Willie, when I saw the "for hire" words on the front, it struck me the same way it did you, which is why I noticed that the back was different. It's STILL a nifty shirt.

I don't remember singing "You're so ugly" to my kids as a LULLABYE, though doubtless I came out with it on other occasions. But Ken remembers a lot of stuff I don't. Kendall was right on.

Nancy, the Corporation is "Lane Fielding Patterson and Swan--Layabouts at Large AND For Hire." I am glad you liked our corporate sportswear which I saw Rick wearing in one of the pictures.

It's a busy world Nancy. There is never enough time to get the things done that you have to get done let alone time to just relax and do nothing. We all know the importance of relaxation to mental well being, but it is just so hard to work it in! Hence the need for LFPS....We can do it for you!

Why not go out and buy yourself a new boat? We'll be glad to take it out on any number of lakes and rivers for you. We can ski, swim, fish, and just cruise for days on end while you can continue to do all the work that you need to get done! Just think of it! You can work 16 hour days, seven days a week and still get the rest and relaxation you need.

So remember, when doing sweet damn all is simply too damn much, call on Lane, Fielding, Patterson, and Swan, the company with a zest for doing nothing!

Spaw - The guy who puts the P in LFPS

I'm proud to be joined at the hip with some such as these, and SO proud to know all of you, and overjoyed to have sung with you all. I still feel like Charlie Baum looked ALL weekend. I still have this silly grin everytime I think of EVERY song that was sung.

But my favorite memory of every Getaway I've been to is when I find myself wandering between workshops, and hear snippets of all kinds of music wafting out the windows and doorways of every building I pass. It's pure magic... all of it.

It's hard to improve on BUT each time seems better than the last. I had the best time workshop singing with Roger & Ken & then Ken again. George, Mary & Ken's Kipling workshop was to die for, the only one I I think I was able to catch all of. I think they got Dani hooked for life on both Kipling & Bellamy. For me it the was the night sings that are always tops. I can't remember a lot of Fri evening aside from lots of good singing & some great country stuff & some oldies to boot & then it was 4:30 in the morn. Saturday's cabin evening sing was as much a treat as any espically Morticia's "Me Husband's Got no Porridge in Him" her subtle lead in was a gas & Allen C's power house song, can't remember what it was now but it was great. Had only 2 regrets, it seems that I missed out on Janice Cole's singing of "Rubber Ducky" (Rita- it was only a couple yrs ago). Never before or since have I heard someone sing something so funny that it cause a respitory condition. Last time I heard her I fell off a table laughing so hard & had an asthma attack but it was worth every gasp & it seems that I also missed Kendall's "5$ For Whinning" a maybe second to country music's "You Don't Have To Call Me Darling". Throat or no he's well loved, could be he look's older than must. It was extremly nice to chat with Susan at the Camsco booth, love that woman's taste in music (not sure about her taste in banjo players though). Can't believe Tinker has my scars on tape for veiwing, I'll have to by them all now just to keep them out of cirulation. Would've much rather have heard you singing than filming my new body parts. You sound a hell've lot better than I look espically from that veiw & from that angle. Singing with the older Big Mick is always a blast, sorry for wisking away like that, my ETA was 3:30am & I had to get up for work by 5:30, figured if I didn't go strait away while I was planning/thinking I'd be very, very late for work, so double hugs the next time. It's always so hard to leave that if I didn't just go I'd be a gonna. Seeing & hearing Ferrara, as always, is a special pleasure
for me, likewise seeing Dave Diamond & getting him to sing the parody he wrote to the "Hog Eye Man", "The Lifeboat Man" is quite the tickle. There's far more that I'm missing here but all of us probaly have enough to fill a book with. only 51 weeks to go, see ya all then. You all have a lovely year. Barry
