Subject: RE: Lyr Add: I Don't Reckon It'll Happen Again From: Geoff the Duck Date: 18 Nov 02 - 11:15 AM Nathan - thanks for the lyrics. There are two other mudcat threads relating to these lyrics. One is a compilation of song lyrics from the singing of Uncle Dave Macon, Uncle Dave Macon Lyrics thread. The other is a project to collect together lyrics to songs on the Honking Duck website, Mudcat Honkingduck Oldtime Project Proposal. I have put a link to here from both these mudcat threads. I hope that is okay? Quack ! Geoff the Duck. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: I Don't Reckon It'll Happen Again From: 12-stringer Date: 19 Nov 02 - 12:31 AM Also a version by Gid Tanner's Georgia Boys, on Co 15124-D, mx 143049-2, recorded 11/4/1926 in Atlanta. Not having heard it in 30 years, my memory is that Fate Norris does the singing, that his lyrics *may* be slightly clearer than these, and IIRC he does verses 1, 2, 4, and 6 (with lyric "I just came up from Georgia" rather than "Knoxville"). I don't remember either of the other 2 verses in this version, but especially not the one about the road. Reverse is "New Dixie" by Fate Norris and Tanner's Georgia Boys, from the same session, mx 143047-2 (#s courtesy of the Online 78rpm Discography, of course). I used to have a reel-to-reel dub of this. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: I Don't Reckon It'll Happen Again From: Nathan in Texas Date: 20 Nov 02 - 08:32 AM From the dates of the recordings, I assume that both Bill Chitwood and Gid Tanner learned it from Uncle Dave's recording. Anyone know any history of the song? Was it original with Uncle Dave? |
Subject: Lyr Add: WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN (from Sam & Kirk McGee From: Nathan in Texas Date: 08 Jun 03 - 10:01 AM Here's another set of the lyrics, this from Sam & Kirk McGee. WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN Susie is my cousin, that's the gospel truth Three more in the family, Rebekah, Jane and Ruth I tell you of the trouble they had with William Ryder They took the poor girl out and treated her and gave her sour cider But I don't reckon it'd happen again for months and months and months But I don't reckon it'd happen again for months and months and months I went to bed the other night and dreamed that I was dead I walked up to the pearly gates and to Saint Peter said "I'm just up here from Franklin," He said "I do declare, Come right on in you are the first that I have met from there." But I don't reckon it'd happen again for months and months and months I don't reckon it'd happen again for months and months and months I had a nightmare the other night, and I looked up on the wall The fleas and the roaches were playing a game of ball The roaches were six to nothing; the roaches were ahead A flea knocked a home run and I fell out of the bed But I don't reckon it'd happen again for months and months and months But I don't reckon it'd happen again for months and months and months I worked all night the other night; I was all tired out and in. I walked up to the door with a great big grin. My wife said, "Sam, you'll have to go and get some safety pin." And when I turned to the cover back, there lay to eight pound twin. But I don't reckon it'd happen again for months and months and months But I don't reckon it'd happen again for months and months and months [Spoken] I know that ain't gonna happen again for months and months and months, cause I'm seventy-six years old, boys. Subject: RE: Lyr Add: I Don't Reckon It'll Happen Again From: Jim Dixon Date: 11 Jun 03 - 10:53 PM I've been busy finding and transcribing sound samples. Turns out, these songs don't seem related to each other after all, other than having similar-sounding titles. But several are interesting in their own right. IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN - Blues (As sung by Shakey Jake Harris) Well, let me tell you, people. I'll tell you the natural fact. I taken her downtown. I put clothes on her back. Won't do that, won't do that again. When I find my woman doin' wrong, I declare she got to go. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN (As sung by The Harlem Hamfats) ...[b]aby, it will never happen again. I've tried to do my best for your happiness, you must confess. With all your faults unless you're not meant for me, I guess. So let's call it a day... IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN FOR A HUNDRED YEARS OR MORE (As sung by Fiddlin' John Carson) ...apple, said she had to take a bite. Two angels with a fiery sword chased her out of sight. Well, that'll never happen again for a hundred years to come, And I don't think it'll happen again for a hundred years to come. I AIN'T A-GONNA LET IT HAPPEN NO MORE (as sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford) I paid for this and I paid for that. She gets the lean and I get the fat. I'm a-tellin' you, friend, I'm a-gettin' sick an' tired. She only wants to see me when I get my pay, Then she calls somebody else to go out and play, But I ain't a-gonna let it happen no more. THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN NO MORE (Posted at several old threads, for example, a Blind Blake version, a Dave Van Ronk version, a version by Mudcatter Brad Sondahl, and a Blind Willie McTell version.) DON'T HAPPEN NO MORE (Originally sung by Young Jessie. Covered by Pat Benatar, ironically, no doubt. The following was pieced together from sound samples by both of them, and from a quote I found somewhere else.) There used to be a time when a woman could cook. There used to be a time she didn't worry 'bout her looks. She used to sip on sassafras, wouldn't even drink. She wouldn't try to tell her man what to think. CHORUS: It don't happen no more. That was long time ago. It's a pitiful shame, how the world has changed. There used to be a time when a woman couldn't smoke. There used to be a time when a woman couldn't vote. She just stayed at home while her man went out to play. She was satisfied with life any old way. CHORUS |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: I Don't Reckon It'll Happen Again From: GUEST,Tony Edwards as sung by English (Eng-Bo) Jor Date: 07 Sep 08 - 01:35 PM A man went to show off before a crowd as was his heart's desire Put his feet in a tub of water and grabbed and electric wire When he slapped his hand down on the wire you ought to have heard him groan As he gritted his teeth and flapped his ears As the voltage run his bones! Well, I don't think that'll happen again in months and months and months, I don't think that'll happen again in months and months and months! A man went to saw some limbs off a great big hollow tree His little boy standing on the ground says Daddy stay here with me He sat on the limb, sawed next to the tree when the limb began to crack, his little boy standing on the ground says Daddy will soon be back! |

Well, Susan is my cousin, and that's the gospel truth. Three more in the fam'ly: Rebecca, Jane, and Ruth, I'll tell you all the trouble she had with William Ryder. He dared(?) the poor girl out and treated her, and he gave her sour cider. But I don't reckon it'll happen again for months and months and months. Oh, I don't reckon it'll happen again for months and months and months. Sue she went to supper with that Ryder man. When the waiter passed the plate around, she shoo-flied with her fan. Oh, you William Ryder! With cider he did load 'er. Sue, the fool, drank like a mule, and died with the hydrophobia. But I don't reckon it'll happen again for months and months and months. I don't reckon it'll happen again for months and months and months. Once there was an Irishman tried t' turn an elephant around. The elephant took his trunk and slapped ol' Paddy down. The Irishman said to the elephant: "You great big ugly brute! If I knew which end your head was on, I'd jab you in the snoot." But I don't reckon it'll happen again for months and months and months. I don't reckon it'll happen again for months and months and months. I went to bed the other night and dreamed that I was dead. I walked right up to the Pearly Gates and to Saint Peter said: "I just came up from Nashville." He said: "I do declare! Come right on in; you are the first that ever came from there." But I don't reckon it'll happen again for months and months and months. I don't reckon it'll happen again for months and months and months. |

Oh, Eve [was fond of?] apple[s], [said?] she had to take a bite. Two angels with a [flamin' ?] sword chased her out of sight, Ol' Jonah was a sailor, so runs the Bible tale, He sailed the South Atlantic, got quarters in a whale, Oh, Jonah found his quarters, they weren't the very best, Ol' Jonah pressed the button, the whale it did the rest, I had a dream the other night, I dreamt that I was dead, Pulled the Pearly Gates away, an' to Saint Peter said, I just came in from Atlanta, he says, I do declare Walk right in, you're the first man that's ever come from there. |
