Subject: Folk song in 'Nora' From: GUEST,Murray on Saltspring Date: 09 Jan 03 - 12:01 AM In the film 'Nora', about Nora Barnacle, James Joyce's wife, there's a delightful little folksong they sing together; I've heard it before but it just escapes me. Has anyone any knowledge of this? |
Subject: RE: Folk song in 'Nora' From: Hrothgar Date: 09 Jan 03 - 04:57 AM Haven't heard this at all. It could even be "Norah" which is related to "When You and I Were Young, Maggie." Have to see the movie if it ever shows up here. |
Subject: RE: Folk song in 'Nora' From: An Pluiméir Ceolmhar Date: 09 Jan 03 - 05:40 AM I haven't seen the film, but I think it was probably "The lass of Aughrim". It was asking about this song that brought me to Mudcat in the first place. I suggest you start with this thread and work your way back through the blue clickies which it contains for a fascinating Mudcat journey. |
Subject: RE: Folk song in 'Nora' From: GUEST,Murray on Salt Spring Date: 09 Jan 03 - 10:56 PM Thanks, Musical Plumber!! Now all I have to do is find the tune, which if I remember rightly ends on the supertonic. I don't see it in Bronson's ballad tunes (under Child 76) - whereabouts could I find it? Cheers M |
Subject: RE: Folk song in 'Nora' From: An Pluiméir Ceolmhar Date: 10 Jan 03 - 04:11 AM Can't help you, I'm afraid. I was looking for the words for a colleague, but know nothing about the melody. But the John Huston film of "The Dead" is available on video, and Frank Patterson's version of it is as far as I know available on a record, so maybe you could try looking in that direction if no-one else here comes up with better advice. |
Subject: RE: Folk song in 'Nora' From: Declan Date: 10 Jan 03 - 05:05 AM The song is a version of Lord Gregory (or vice versa) which is fairly widely recorded. I think its on the Silly Sisters album sung by June Tabor/Maddy Prior. The Lass of Aughrim tune is a variant of the tune used on this recording. I've heard that version sung occasionally but the only recording I can think of is the Frank Patterson one in "The Dead" as APC has already suggested. |
