In the film 'Nora', about Nora Barnacle, James Joyce's wife, there's a delightful little folksong they sing together; I've heard it before but it just escapes me. Has anyone any knowledge of this?

Haven't heard this at all. It could even be "Norah" which is related to "When You and I Were Young, Maggie."

Have to see the movie if it ever shows up here.

I haven't seen the film, but I think it was probably "The lass of Aughrim".

It was asking about this song that brought me to Mudcat in the first place. I suggest you start with this thread and work your way back through the blue clickies which it contains for a fascinating Mudcat journey.

Thanks, Musical Plumber!! Now all I have to do is find the tune, which if I remember rightly ends on the supertonic. I don't see it in Bronson's ballad tunes (under Child 76) - whereabouts could I find it?
Cheers
M

Can't help you, I'm afraid. I was looking for the words for a colleague, but know nothing about the melody.

But the John Huston film of "The Dead" is available on video, and Frank Patterson's version of it is as far as I know available on a record, so maybe you could try looking in that direction if no-one else here comes up with better advice.

The song is a version of Lord Gregory (or vice versa) which is fairly widely recorded. I think its on the Silly Sisters album sung by June Tabor/Maddy Prior. The Lass of Aughrim tune is a variant of the tune used on this recording. I've heard that version sung occasionally but the only recording I can think of is the Frank Patterson one in "The Dead" as APC has already suggested.
