I think it's the line about it tore them apart as it came from his heart and they'd not heard that heart for so long

When my ship comes in I'll buy a whole CD of his. (This doesn't mean I'm not in love with everyone on Plum..)

Mary, I'm in love with Harvey, too -- at least with his incredibly beautiful voice and with that song!

I'm actually going to learn it and sing it at song circles, but I gotta say, I'm already feeling inadequate about it, since there's no way I can make it sound anywhere near as good as Harvey's own version.

Thanks for posting the lyrics. I will add them to the liner notes thread for that CD (Plum, right?).

Just for the record, a couple of things in the lyric above are misheard so here's the corrections. It's great to think of the songs being sung. As I always say, "A song unsung is a dead song" (to the tune of "Hi, Lily, hi lily, hi lo").

I emailed the words to HP from Sunnycamp Rainycamp etc. and he is going to learn the song...and even buy the mudcat C.D. so we can definitely probably sing it at RC. I have only played it about 12 times already.    But I'm also occasionally letting the rest of the c.d. play which is quite lovely. Please tell your wife it is entirely platonic. this whole process reminds of when we went to Camp Alexandra in B.C. and heard Bill Gallagher sing Mary and the Seal. I has a great chorus..the sea it rolls out and then it rolls in.. I had a bathroom light that turned on the electricity and I had a tape recorder with the song on it and every time I turned onthe bathroom light the song came on. Came to the next song circle with the song and found Bruce B. and Cathy R. had the same notion..and we've sung it ever since....and remember when the song Jill King found or spread..long life and success to the farmer...spread like wildfire...mg

I've been thinking about "job" and "Jar" and I think it's the way an American ear hears the words as compared to a UK ear. In the UK we say "job" but in America it sounds more like "jaarb", so to a U.S ear jar would sound like jaarb without the b!
This of course works the other way round and i always listen to U.S cd's with the lyrics in front of me. In another hundred years will we have a common language?
No criticism intended by the way. I'm just hypothesising as i try hard not to sing with that awful mid-Atlantic accent so beloved of English pop artists from Elton John to whoever.

I think good CD of Harvey's to get first is

"25 years on the road"

It is my favourite because it is just him and the guitar, sometime people add so much to their recordings that the sound is completely different to what attracted you in the first place e.g. the live performance.

Harvey Andrews was the first Folk singer I ever saw/heard when my dad dragged me along to our local Folk Club, I then went back time after time and I still love discovering new artists and new songs whether completely new or hearing old songs the first time.

I haven't heard the "steel guitar" song yet but I've been singing "English Ale" and "If It Wasn't For The Song" here in San Francisco. My copy of "The Gift" should arrive any day now. Harvey Andrews is an exceptional song writer whose craft combines good lyrics with good melodies in a way that certainly touches my heart.

Well, as much as I don't want his head to get any bigger, I'm gonna relay a bit of information from one of his performances in Toronto. I have NEVER seen a performer elicit great laughter AND tears (at the same time) from a monologue. I'm told Billy Connoly does it, but that's pretty good company. Must take a hell of a lot of skill.

Try and get hold of a copy of SNAPS by Harvey.
I've got a couple of CD's and tapes including 25 years on the road, but I keep on playing "Snaps". I don't know why perhaps it's because the songs seem so personal to him it's like he's letting you into part of his life that he kept hidden before.

I last saw Harvey when he came to Falmouth and he was as fresh as when I saw him 15 years previously, he just seems to go on and on enjoying performing.
