Subject: BS: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: mg Date: 10 Jan 03 - 11:34 PM just got my plum C.D. and I can't stop playing the song about the steel guitar..then I go back and play Big Mick and then Start of the County Down..don't want to leave anyone out..they are all just great..love the White Snow song.. I think it's the line about it tore them apart as it came from his heart and they'd not heard that heart for so long When my ship comes in I'll buy a whole CD of his. (This doesn't mean I'm not in love with everyone on Plum..) mg |

Subject: Lyr Add: FROM THE HEART (Harvey Andrews) From: mg Date: 10 Jan 03 - 11:54 PM He'd an old-fashioned way when he started to play. He'd an old-fashioned steel guitar. With no amps and no leads, it fulfilled all his needs And together they'd both traveled far.
Just an old troubadour on an old barroom floor,
Then a kid playing pool said, "This old man's a fool.
Then a girl passed him by with a look in her eye
She stood her ground. She stared him down.
When the kid left the room, the chord filled the gloom
And when the chord died like a wave on the tide,
So that old troubadour left that old barroom floor.
He'd an old-fashioned way when he started to play.
Just an old troubadour on an old barroom floor,
Yes, it tore them apart 'cause it came from his heart, |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: GUEST,Genie Date: 11 Jan 03 - 01:00 AM Mary, I'm in love with Harvey, too -- at least with his incredibly beautiful voice and with that song! I'm actually going to learn it and sing it at song circles, but I gotta say, I'm already feeling inadequate about it, since there's no way I can make it sound anywhere near as good as Harvey's own version. Thanks for posting the lyrics. I will add them to the liner notes thread for that CD (Plum, right?). Genie-who-can't-be-bothered-logging-in-right-now. |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: mg Date: 11 Jan 03 - 01:03 AM plum, yes. Let's try to do it at Rainycamp so at least people can get the tune...I hope Lorna comes too..I'll give her a call..I loved singing with both of you together. mg |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: Mudlark Date: 11 Jan 03 - 02:17 AM I guess I'm going to have to get in line here...what a voice! |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: mg Date: 11 Jan 03 - 02:20 AM Isn't he great. I'm just afraid that tomorrow we'll check in and see a post from Mrs. Harvey Andrews. And Mudlark, I loved your song too...your voice was quite faint but it was still beautiful. mg |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: Genie Date: 11 Jan 03 - 02:55 AM Actually, Mary, I'm pretty sure there is a Mrs. Harvey Andrews. I seem to recall his mentioning her in another thread. (Like it really matters to us Pacific NW Yank women!) :-) Genie |
Subject: Lyr Add: FROM THE HEART (Harvey Andrews) From: harvey andrews Date: 11 Jan 03 - 06:05 AM I shouldn't come in here, because it may stop the thread and it's making me feel good! Many thanks Mary and all others. Her indoors will post too. Just for the record, a couple of things in the lyric above are misheard so here's the corrections. It's great to think of the songs being sung. As I always say, "A song unsung is a dead song" (to the tune of "Hi, Lily, hi lily, hi lo").

Subject: Lyric Add: "From The Heart" - Harvey Andrews From: Genie Date: 11 Jan 03 - 10:07 AM Harvey, from the CD, I could've sworn it was "job," too, not "jar." Thanks for clarifying it. Can you tell me the copyright date (to put in the Plum CD liner notes)? Genie |

Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: mg Date: 11 Jan 03 - 02:57 PM I emailed the words to HP from Sunnycamp Rainycamp etc. and he is going to learn the song...and even buy the mudcat C.D. so we can definitely probably sing it at RC. I have only played it about 12 times already. But I'm also occasionally letting the rest of the c.d. play which is quite lovely. Please tell your wife it is entirely platonic. I only speak for myself though. Mick and Genie et al. will have to speak for themselves. Mick I hope you're not jealous but you like THE FAIR ONE best anyway. mg |

Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: mg Date: 11 Jan 03 - 03:14 PM this whole process reminds of when we went to Camp Alexandra in B.C. and heard Bill Gallagher sing Mary and the Seal. I has a great chorus..the sea it rolls out and then it rolls in.. I had a bathroom light that turned on the electricity and I had a tape recorder with the song on it and every time I turned onthe bathroom light the song came on. Came to the next song circle with the song and found Bruce B. and Cathy R. had the same notion..and we've sung it ever since....and remember when the song Jill King found or spread..long life and success to the farmer...spread like wildfire...mg |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: Mudlark Date: 11 Jan 03 - 03:30 PM Mary...thanks for the kind words. I was just sorry this lovely song came out so muffled but I appreciate your attentive listening. And excuse the thread creep, Harvey...this is a thread that deserves lots more entries! |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: harvey andrews Date: 11 Jan 03 - 03:33 PM I've been thinking about "job" and "Jar" and I think it's the way an American ear hears the words as compared to a UK ear. In the UK we say "job" but in America it sounds more like "jaarb", so to a U.S ear jar would sound like jaarb without the b! This of course works the other way round and i always listen to U.S cd's with the lyrics in front of me. In another hundred years will we have a common language? No criticism intended by the way. I'm just hypothesising as i try hard not to sing with that awful mid-Atlantic accent so beloved of English pop artists from Elton John to whoever. |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Jan 03 - 03:56 PM I've been meaning to study Harvey's work a little more closely. What's a good CD to start with, and where can I get it in the U.S.? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: Genie Date: 11 Jan 03 - 04:31 PM Joe, I asked a similar question in this thread . You can start, of course, by going to www.harveyandrews.com (IIRC). Genie |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: Fran Date: 12 Jan 03 - 11:36 AM I think good CD of Harvey's to get first is "25 years on the road" It is my favourite because it is just him and the guitar, sometime people add so much to their recordings that the sound is completely different to what attracted you in the first place e.g. the live performance. Harvey Andrews was the first Folk singer I ever saw/heard when my dad dragged me along to our local Folk Club, I then went back time after time and I still love discovering new artists and new songs whether completely new or hearing old songs the first time. |

Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: Willa Date: 12 Jan 03 - 03:04 PM I have 'The Gift'and would recommend it. As well as 'From the Heart' and 'If it Wasn't for the Song' it includes 'Spinning Concertinas' and my personal favourite 'Anon' |

A Brummie, and proud of it, I am. However, after yesterday's drubbing by Arsenal I would have preferred you to keep this truth hidden for a while. |

Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: radriano Date: 13 Jan 03 - 11:33 AM I haven't heard the "steel guitar" song yet but I've been singing "English Ale" and "If It Wasn't For The Song" here in San Francisco. My copy of "The Gift" should arrive any day now. Harvey Andrews is an exceptional song writer whose craft combines good lyrics with good melodies in a way that certainly touches my heart. Radriano |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 13 Jan 03 - 02:52 PM In the days of my youth there were times when hearing Harvey on the Tannoy was the most entertainment you got at St Andrews! BJ |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: Rick Fielding Date: 15 Jan 03 - 11:35 AM Well, as much as I don't want his head to get any bigger, I'm gonna relay a bit of information from one of his performances in Toronto. I have NEVER seen a performer elicit great laughter AND tears (at the same time) from a monologue. I'm told Billy Connoly does it, but that's pretty good company. Must take a hell of a lot of skill. Cheers Rick |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: breezy Date: 15 Jan 03 - 12:53 PM I hope Harvey puts the correct fuel in his tank when he comes to us next time, in his new car! I cant believe this thread, he'll be making an entry dressed in a white cloak next! I blame Topic records for an early compilation album. Billy has more visual impact, perhaps Harvey can take note. If he makes it again to St.Albans, and lets hope so,it could be mid-summer,so shorts and t-shirt,sunglasses and a hat,its all about image dont you think,as well as the music. |

Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: sian, west wales Date: 20 Jan 03 - 07:50 AM I turned the radio on last night as I was drifting off to sleep - a Welsh-language folk/C&W programme on Radio Cymru - just as this incredibly beautiful voice was getting stuck into a song. (Yonks better than the usual fair on this programme) At the end, the hosts, John and Alun (a Welsh folk/C&W duo), asked if anyone knew the latest on this great singer, Harvey Andrews! So, Harvey, your Welsh public demand to know! (I think their e-mail would be this . sian |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: GUEST Date: 20 Jan 03 - 02:17 PM Thank you Sian, I will E mail them the information that I am still alive, and appearing at Theatre Brycheiniog, (Brecon) on the 11th of February! |
Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: Steve Parkes Date: 21 Jan 03 - 05:46 AM I was in Lichfiled on Saturday, and saw a poster outside the Guildhall to the effect that he was appearing that very night. Sorry Harvey, but my nephew's third birthday party took precedence! Oh, and I saw your fans in Stonnall, but they were all inthe village panto that night. You really must time the next one better! Subject: RE: I think I'm in love with Harvey Andrews From: Kernow John Date: 21 Jan 03 - 07:13 PM Joe Try and get hold of a copy of SNAPS by Harvey. I've got a couple of CD's and tapes including 25 years on the road, but I keep on playing "Snaps". I don't know why perhaps it's because the songs seem so personal to him it's like he's letting you into part of his life that he kept hidden before. I last saw Harvey when he came to Falmouth and he was as fresh as when I saw him 15 years previously, he just seems to go on and on enjoying performing. Thanks Harvey John |
