I've been searching for a couple of years now for the lyrics to this song, which I think came out of World War II - it might even have been World War I. I'm pretty certain it was recorded by Cosmotheka but although I've found references to it on Google, I haven't actually found the lyrics. I can't find any references to it anywhere on Mudcat either. The last line goes something like

"...and it's the girl who makes the thing that holds the oil that oils the string that works the thingummybob that's going to win the war"

Has anyone got any ideas?

BTW I'm new to Mudcat so this is all a bit scary but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it!

Sophie

For whatever help it may be, the term is usually spelled, " thingamabob". I have heard this song too; but can't remember any more than what you have posted.

Welcome to the Mudcat, Sophie!

From: GUEST,MCP
Date: 02 Feb 03 - 05:44 PM

Here's what I have. The word in italics is from where I can't read my own writing!

Mick

THE THINGUMMY-BOB

You've heard of Florence Nightingale, Grace Darling and the rest
You've all seen Greta Garbo and our bashful(?) friend Mae West
But there's a little lady I want you all to meet
She's working on munitions and she lives just down the street.
She can't pretend to be a great celebrity
But still she's most important in her way
The job she has to do may not sound much to you
But all the same I'm very proud to say.

She's the girl that makes the thing
That drills the hole that hold the spring
That drives the rod that turns the knob
That works the thingummybob
She's the girl that makes the thing
That hold the oil that oils the ring
That takes the shank that moves the crank
That works the thingummybob.
It's a ticklish sort of job making a thing for a thingummybob
Especially when you don't know what it's for.
But it's the girl that makes the thing
That drills the hole that holds the spring
That works the thingummybob that makes the engine roar
But it's the girl that makes the thing
That holds the oil that oils the ring
That makes the thingummybob that's going to win the war.

She's not what you would call a heroine
I don't suppose you'll ever hear her name
But though she'll never boast of her important post
She strikes a blow for Britannia just the same.

I've got a recording of Gracie Fields doing this song as well as the Arthur (Ay thang yew) Askey version.

"You Must Remember This" Conifer records CDHD 265/6 if you're into songs from the war period.

The italic word above is BOSOM

"You've all seen Greta Garbo and our bosom friend Mae West"

(I understand Mae West had a large chest hence she also had a lifejacket named after her)

The first line in the second verse should be:

"She's not what you would call a heroine at all"

and the last line should be:

"She strikes a blow for freedom just the same."

A great song written by Heneker & Thompson probably around 1942

David Heneker, M.B.E., born in Southsea on 31 March 1906, is remembered for his songs and lyrics for Half A Sixpence (1963), after H.G. Wells' 'Kipps' but this was by no means his only stage show. For some of them like Jorrocks (1966) and Popkiss (1972) he wrote all the lyrics and music; for others like Expresso Bongo (1958), Make Me an Offer (1959), The Art of Living (1960), Charlie Girl (1965) and Phil the Fluter (1969) he had assistance though usually with lyrics rather than the music. He composed many "separate" songs as well: Girls in Khaki, Only Fools, There Goes My Dream and The Thing-ummy-Bob. In this field he was known to collaborate, One Exciting Night being written with John Turner and Walter Ridley, She's in Love with a Soldier with Noel Gay. Heneker came late to the musical world as he served as a regular army officer between 1925 and 1948.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Mark

I'll have a hunt around and see if I can find either of the recordings Mark mentioned. I can remember the tune for the chorus but not the verses; it's many years since I heard it.

Mark - thanks for the help. bosom is what I should have had (I was confused by a descender from the line above in my writing - It's a transcription copy and rough, and it looks as if I never made a fair copy). Arthur must have sang Britain (not Britannia as I incorrectly copied above)in the last line of my recording; I don't think I'd have got that wrong in the transcription.

Sophie, it was recorded by Cosmotheka. It was featured in their WWII-songs radio series, of which the name has suddenly escaped me. I'm sure it came up in another thread ages ago ... I'll see if I can track it down and let you know.

I think this CD is now out of print but "Thingummybob" isn't on it anyway.

This is also the title of the tape that I've got with Arthur Askey's version on although as someone taped it for me I haven't got the details of it.

I've got quite a few tapes and CDs of wartime songs (including one with someone singing "Who do you think you are kidding Mr Hitler" - totally anachronistic as it wasn't written until 1968!)They came out when anniversaries of the war were looming - you have to look out for them. I was surprised nobody brought a record out of the songs that were featured on Dad's Army - or did they?

Sophie - If you want a copy of Arthur or Gracie's version, drop me an email with your details and I'll send you a tape of them.

(REPEAT THE SUNG PORTION ABOVE.)

I thank you.

Toshiba used it for an advert in 1988. I'm shocked how little they changed. Just "especially when you FIND OUT what it's for" and "it's the girl that etc, etc, that works the thingummybob that's going to make some more".

I don't know how much intended irony there is in the fact that the girl in question, in the advert, is Japanese.

I play in the Westinghouse Concert Orchestra and we are performing a VE Day Concert in May that will include a number of war time songs including "the Thing-ummy-bob". (Our orchestra has been around since WW2 and performed on Workers' Playtime - we aim to recreate at least some of the programme that the orchestra played back then!). Although our talented MD has managed to produce orchestral parts for us by listening to a sound track and transcibing the music, we haven't been able to find a copy of the original sheet music. Does any one know where we might get a copy of the score, or parts?

GUEST,g_d_edwards@hotmail.com,

"...Does any one know where we might get a copy of the score, or parts? ..."

Have you trie EMI Music? They bought up rancis, Day & Hunter and so *should* have their back catalogue (although whether they can be bothered to help is another matter).

"...I play in the Westinghouse Concert Orchestra and we are performing a VE Day Concert in May that will include a number of war time songs including "the Thing-ummy-bob"..."

One point to remember, if you are reproducing a 'working hours' type show (the type played over factory speakers to keep up morale) please remember that "Deep in the Heart of Texas" is a banned song (the clapping meant production losses).

Regards

Tom

A few people have sung it including Gracie Fields, Elsie Carlisle, and 'Gert & Daisy' (Elsie & Doris Waters)
Recordings are available:
Here
http://www.musichallcds.com/var19_page.htm
and
http://www.pastperfect.com/Era/1930s-Music/p36.aspx

I found these words written by Lana Smith on the BBC WW2 memories site

Chorus:
Everybody pinches my butter,
They won't leave my butter alone,
And nothing is better than butter,
For keeping the old man at home.
Everybody says I'm old-fashioned
To sit on the things that are rationed.
You can pinch all my ham,
And my plum and apple jam,
But please leave my butter alone.

Verse:
I've got a nice friendly face,
I think you'll agree,
But folk are always popping in to have a cuppa tea,
You may think I'm old-fashioned,
When I argue and shout,
But it's not wars and politics I worry about.

Cheers
Mark

Well, thats well wierd.
Only yesterday, I was trawling through the bin liner that contains my DAT collection (mainly unlabelled!) from my previous life, and I came across one tape in particular.
Cosmotheka, recorded at Sidmouth 1998.
And, it includes Thingummybob (However it's spelt)
Had completely forgotten that I'd done it.
So, at least there is a version of it, safe and well on my hard drive!

The following libraries have sheet music for THE THING-UMMY-BOB:

Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio
The National Library of Australia, Canberra

It's also in a book called "Sing with Gracie Fields" ([New York] : Robbins Music Corp., ©1943.) Click here for a list of libraries that have it. You will need to enter your location to find the library nearest you.

Is there any way anyone could help me? I am desperately trying to find how to contact the copyright holders of this song so that I can legally use it for a Christmas USO show I am writing, and I would love to use this, and would be happy to pay reasonable royalties to use it, I just need to know who to contact. If any one knows and could please help me, I've been searching everywhere.    Please email me at Emrelove@aol.com

Thank you so much in advance! I want to go about this completely legally, and don't want to use something without permission.
