Subject: Singing Together books on Web Site
From: Kernow John
Date: 05 Feb 03 - 06:10 PM

Do you remember the Singing Together books?

I have started to scan my copies of these and thought there might be some folks out there who would like to see them.
I have put the first (not the earliest) scanned one on one of my web sites.
Let me know what you think.

If you would like a particular copy scanned and put on the site PM me.

This one is black on white but later copies were in colour.

I have put together a collection of 20 issues on CD in Flip Album format and sent them to a fellow 'catter for comment. If the comments are favourable I could make further copies available in exchange for donations to Mudcat.

Regards John

Thanks for sharing these, John. I was not familiar with them. They look like a fun resource. I had trouble seeing the whole thing without having to move the bar thing over, but that's probably the way I have my browser set. They look really neat.

Pleasant childhood memories for many who grew up in the UK during the 1950s-70s; and for many of us, our first conscious introduction to folk songs (well, re-made "children's versions" of them, anyway). I still have some copies of Singing Together from the mid 60's; though I do seem to have drawn all over them at the time...

John, that has the potential to be a wonderful resource.

As an experiment, I tried printing out a page, as that would be the most useful use to me. However, not only was the image too wide and long to print on one A4 page, it printed yellow on black instead of black on white (very wasteful of ink). Does anyone else find this problem, or can anyone tell me how to correct this please? John, have you tried printing any of the images from the site yourself? What am I doing wrong? (I've never found an image elsewhere that prints in the negative.)

What perfect timing, John!
A crowd of us got to reminiscing on this very subject at Whitby last year, and Ali has timetabled us to do a 'Singing Together' workshop/singaround at Saddleworth festival this year. See Saddleworth festival thread.

Gathering songs and information for it at the moment, so I'm sure your resource will be of great help to our aging memories :0)

Why don't you get yourself up to Saddleworth and help us out? (and Malcolm, Joan, Sal and Robyn, if not MMario and katlaughing!)

Is anyone else experiencing the same problem as Joan from Wigan?
I've tried but don't get the same result, ie no yellow involved.

The page is too big to print in one go, this was done on purpose as it made it easier to save the image for reading into music scanning software. (To produce a midi).

The easiest method for printing from online, for me, is to right click the image, copy and then paste it into my word processor or graphics package.

Hope this helps

John.

Do you have Hanging Johnny there this year? If so I may be able to send some old copies with them.

I always find it better to download the image to my computer and print it from graphics software instead of the browser. You would have more control over it. Strange about the yellow/negative image, but as I remember it, (I looked at a few of them last night), there was BLACK around the edge, and the paper colour was a little yellowed.

My scan software would allow me to set the specific area to take the image from so I can avoid that sort of black edging.

In the graphics software, I can also "whiten" the yellowed pages.

Kernow John, I don't know if this will become a larger project or what editions of Singing Together you have. I have a set running from around 1968 to about 1985 with some gaps.

If I have any editions you may need, you are welcome to borrow them. email me at jon@folkinfo.org.

Browsers don't have very good print functions; I do as John and George do for images. My problem with the site is that it uses layers and absolute positioning, which means that anyone with a high-resolution display sees garbled pages with pictures superimposed on text and so on; effectively, some of the links are "hidden" and don't function.

John

I remeber these with pleasure and have a few of the early ones. I'll see which they are.

The radio programmes had the excellent effect that most adults now have a repertoire of folk songs and tunes (albeit often bowdlerised) which they are familiar with. You can use this to tremendous advantage in pub sessions where the customers are in the bar with you.

Please put my name down for a CD if there's one going!

:-)

This looks a smashimg resource, John. And I've managed to right click and copy and then put into a word document for further manipulaation and printing.

(For your info, I've sung at the Top House whilst on holiday in both 2001 and 2002 and I recognise one or two of the faces on the website.)

I would very much be interested in a copy of the CD and have PMed you with my address. Let me know how much and to whom. Thanks in advance - and thanks for some good sessions at the Top House!

Nice project, thanks for the link. The images are huge but that allows for less loss of quality in the fine illustrations. You might want to let people know the table of contents is the LAST page in the series.

Unfortunately the contents page changes from issue to issue. I've just prepared a text file and will put that up. It lists all the songs in the first 20 I have scanned and tells you which in issue the song occurs.

I've got your pm Alan and I'll get in touch with Bill Sables to see if he is still handling Mudcat Donations and as soon as I get comments back from the first two I'll be in touch.

I've had a hunt around today and as luck would have it, I managed to find an old database I'd made detailing the pamphlets and thier contents. I've thrown a couple of pages together and put them at http://www.folkinfo.org/temp/stlist.asp. In case KJ (or anyone else) wants to see which ones I have and what they contain.

I don't see any reason why not Dave. On the other hand, as you are testing the CD for John and are pretty handy with databases, it may make more sense for me to email you the database as it stands and let you do what you want with it.

It only contains entries for the pamphlets I have and coud do with extending. Anotherthing it could do with is "The" moving to the end of the title to make ",The".

Great stuff, Kernow John!

Could I have a CD, too, please?

I have at least two, and possibly more, copies of "Singing Together" from the 50s, which would seem to predate those you have. I will PM you with details in case they might be of use.

I have a fairly large collection of sheet music dating from 1900 to the late 1970s, including such gems as the "News Chronicle Song Book" and the "Kent County Song Book". I also have a website (www.folkmusic.org.uk) which is underused. I had better get scanning!

The database sounds a good idea. No problem with adding it to the CD's.

A couple of people have asked for copies of the CD. I'm hanging on till I get feedback from Noreen and DMcG. In case what I think is good is really naf!

The quality on the CD is better than that on the website as I've tried to keep downloading times down.

As soon as a decision is made I'll run some off and post that they are available.

KJ, the DB... It is safely in the hands of Dave/dgmc and it's up to him to make what, if anything, he wishes to with my trivial start - something done years ago so I could find songs for myself. It's not my business from now on. It was just very easy for me to show what I had got in that way.

Nutty, in my primary school days, we used to have a dark blue/almost to a purple colour ST compilation book that was handed out sometimes in music lessons - wondering if that is the '67 book you have.

If you want to borrow any of the ones I hold (as listed in that thread), or have scans of pages sent to you, then let me know.

I would love to see some of the 1969-1974 books because I used to have them from school, I remember some of the songs so well, Marco Polo - the fastest on the sea, and I may get the numbers wrong but I have three sisters on the sea?

I received a number of pamphlets from 1959-65 is the post the other day (thanks somebody). When I get more time, I'll see if I can add any extra songs to the old folkinfo database and if Joe is willing, turn them into web pages to add to the archive he hosts.

And here is a contents of books built from the above data. Some song titles in the books are missing most commonly because we had added the song from another source (including Singing Together duplicates). There was a more complete index at folkinfo but it wasn't included Joe's archive (I only used discussions which had songs "attached"). I'll see if I can make getting a more complete index together some time but I can't put that together in a 5 minute job from what we have.

Does anyone recall a song from 67 about a girl waiting for her boyfriend/husband to come back from the sea? I sewed a felt on hessian picture on the subject.

Hi, Annie - do you remember any phrases from the song that would help us find it? There are lots of girls waiting for lovers to come home from sea, usually after seven long years of celibacy....

I believe I sang about Plantagenet Nobodycares. Would love to find this sheet music somewhere. Anyone know about this poor lad? Nikki

I tried to find the 'Singing Together' books online but did not find them. Neither did I find a site by Kernow John.

Perhaps someone else will have better luck.

John's website has gone, I believe, as has the site 'folkinfo' that I worked on for several years. Around two dozen of the Singing together booklets were transcribed and can be found amongst other songs in a copy of the folkinfo site at http://www.joe-offer.com/folkinfo/.

There's a BBC Radio 4 programme on Singing Together that's still available here (click). The programme says that Singing Together was broadcast for 50 years, but only three recorded programmes have been found.

And note that Jon Freeman has posted a fairly complete index of the Singing Together songs from folkinfo here (click)

Anybody know how to access the stuff that Kernow John had posted?

I've seen scans of a number of Singing Together booklets, and they're a delight to behold. It would be a wonderful thing for BBC to make them forever available.

In the 1950s and 1960s, US publishers Follett, Ginn, and Silver Burdett published school songbooks that were of similar style and quality. You'll find the contents of these wonderful books in our Songbook Indexing Project. If you'd like to see one of the songs in our index, just post a request in the pertinent index thread.

I've recently been improving my collection of "Singing Together" and "Time & Tune", mostly via Ebay. Sometimes it means buying several books just to fill one gap in the list.
Tonight, being at a loose end, I've started cataloguing the contents. It looks like being a longish job, but I've copied some of the list to another thread where there was already a partial list.

As ever, if there's a song someone particularly wants, and I have it, I'm happy to transcribe (given time) or to scan & email a page (less work for me!)

I now have Singing Together complete from 1961-1971 inclusive, and can start releasing duplicates via Ebay (to recoup some costs)
I'm keeping an eye out for Autumn 1960, so that I can claim I have the whole of the sixties (in various standards of repair)

Off course there's some 'dross' among the songs, but some gems hidden in there as well.

Hi Nigel.I'm afraid I'm very late coming to your site, but Singing Together was a small but important part of my primary school years. I have to admit that I can still be heard singing parts of these songs.      (Only parts as I can't remember all of them, and only when I'm alone!)
I have often wished that I still had those books and have thought that I should look on the web. Well, today I did and was thrilled to see just how much there is, and your Thread seemed to be what I'm looking for.

My era is from the late sixties until 1972. One book I know is called The Chockabox, not certain of the spelling, and one was Russian songs. Another had a song of which part was:I can't go to school today he said; it's raining, it's raining again.
I also remember the Caribbean song Mango Walk. One of the verses was 'Won't you give me back my shilling with the lion on it'.
I hope you can help me re-live those happy times. If not, I have still enjoyed seeing how many others have happy memories. Thank you. Lynne

As a teacher in the early seventies, I adored doing the Singing Together lessons with the children. I well remember Mango Walk, and we used to sing it as a round. It needs a certain 'swing' to it, or the children just sing it in a very 'English' way with no bezazz.

Hi, Eliza.
As I said in the link I gave earlier, the 'swing' or 'bezazz' can be accounted for:

The music is almost identical. The differences being the addition of guitar chords, the addition of an simple melodic accompaniment line (with intro) giving the Calypso beat for each line (dotted crotchet, dotted crotchet, crotchet). Also the final bar gives both notes as crotchets, with a crotchet rest and then the first note of the next verse.

It's raining again can be found Here as "The Rain Song" (scroll down a little way)

I do apologise Nigel, but you see, crotchets and quavers and so on don't mean much to me as I can't read music at all. I play the piano by ear (I can do chords, and play with both hands) but have never learned notation.
I also remember doing 'It's Raining Again'. My very naughty eleven year-olds used to make me giggle. They'd sing "It's bloooody... raining again!" under their breath, and thought I couldn't hear it. Just the sort of thing my friends and I would do as children. Some of our Christmas carol parodies would make our teachers' hair stand on end, especially 'We Three Kings'.. .
