Subject: RE: Singing Together at joe-offer.com From: GUEST,Jon Date: 16 Jun 14 - 03:04 PM Dave McGlade did the bulk of the hard part, ie. song entry at folkinfo. I've just made the contents page today. It took a bit of time as I had manually enter the titles and references for the songs we hadn't taken from the booklets into a table but it wasn't that big a job. I will see if it's possible to get Singing Together gaps between 1959-65 filled in on the archive from a set of pamphlets that were posted to me but it's likely to be a few weeks before I start the data entry. --- Re me slipping away. I have largely dropped out of folk music in general although I still pop in to internet sites once in a while and do at least keep my hand in by going to an Irish session a few times a year. |

Subject: RE: Singing Together at joe-offer.com From: ian1943 Date: 17 Jun 14 - 07:32 AM I have said for years that 'Singing Together' was the basis of a good repertoire and now we have proof so, for whosoever thought of this idea, and whosoever did the work, my heartiest congratulations for a job well done |
Subject: RE: Singing Together at joe-offer.com From: GUEST,Jon Date: 17 Jun 14 - 08:03 AM Thanks all. I think this particular effort started because we had a shortage of songs to add to the folkinfo song database (the policy was to be able to provide a reference others could use to where we had got the song) and a number of Singing Together songs seemed like good candidates. Of course, Singing Together had been discussed before here an at folkinfo and I had one small collection as one starter. The way we went about led to the omissions from the books as we weren't really sure whether a number of the translations fitted in with the folk song database or not... Perhaps on reflection, even though it would have meant duplication, I should have created an "abc project" for Singing Together. That way each pamphlet could have been a single abc text file that wouldn't have affected the main database. |

Subject: RE: Singing Together at joe-offer.com From: Nigel Parsons Date: 01 Aug 18 - 06:42 AM Songs for Singing Together Teacher's Book BBC Publications (c) and first published 1973. I think the best way to describe this publication (a compendium from the Singing Together series) is just to give the compiler's introduction, and contents list: Introduction All the songs have been taken from the recent programmes of Singing Together which is the longest running music series of the BBC’s broadcasts for schools. Each term, pupils from all around the British Isles send in their votes for their favourite songs and this volume contains a selection of the most popular. The songs have been arranged in various ways which should give ample scope to the performers. Many of them have a melodic accompaniment for instruments such as glockenspiel, xylophone, chime bars, descant recorder, violin, flute etc. This part is always written on the stave directly above the piano accompaniment. (at this point there is a diagram) Sometimes during the course of a song, words have been written under this melodic part, signifying that it may be turned into a second voice part e.g. (another diagram) In this case, the instruments may continue to play with the second voice, or they may of course take a rest. Other songs, such as I have four sisters, have an optional second voice part, but this may be played by a melodic instrument as well. As can be seen, the parts for unpitched percussion are clearly labelled. In other words, these arrangements should be regarded as workshop material to be used and adapted according to the ability of all concerned. It must be remembered that most of these are folk songs and just as variety is to be encouraged with the arrangements, so variety must be given with the performances. To give maximum freedom and flexibility in interpretation, expression marks have been omitted. Subject: RE: Singing Together at joe-offer.com From: Nigel Parsons Date: 01 Aug 18 - 06:54 AM More Songs for Singing Together Compiled and arranged by Douglas Coombes (c) copyright and first published British Broadcasting Corporation 1976 This is a follow-up book to the one listed above, and follows the same formats with intros & accompaniments. So a little more complete than the versions of the songs given in the books for the individual school terms.

Subject: RE: Singing Together at joe-offer.com From: Mo the caller Date: 04 Aug 18 - 04:51 AM What a range of music. Straight from Handel (Art thou troubled) and Mozart (Magic Flute) to Knick Nack Paddywack & Michael Finnegan. I too remember the wireless set being wheeled into our classroom in time for the broadcast. The BBC made an excellent schools series on folk dancing around the turn of the century. Cutting from pupils in schools to adults at a ceilidh dancing the same dance, making it a real living tradition that people do for fun, not just something you had to learn at school. |

Subject: RE: Contents: Singing Together at joe-offer.com From: Nigel Parsons Date: 26 Oct 19 - 09:47 AM Ok. Missing books listed, and put into chronological order. Just to confirm, every book listed by me is one I have a copy of. The above list reflects my collection which I am pleased to say holds a complete run from 1951 to 1985. (anything outside this range, and not listed above I would be interested in getting, or a copy) As before, I am happy to provide words/melodies if needed, or scans by email. Cheers Nigel |

While my interest is in the music, knowing how Google manages to find things here I thought I would place a list of the illustrators here (over possibly 3 postings as it's a long list). Given time late I might go through and add them to the individual contents lists."
