Subject: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Kernow John Date: 05 Feb 03 - 06:10 PM Do you remember the Singing Together books? I have started to scan my copies of these and thought there might be some folks out there who would like to see them. I have put the first (not the earliest) scanned one on one of my web sites. Let me know what you think. If you would like a particular copy scanned and put on the site PM me. This one is black on white but later copies were in colour. I have put together a collection of 20 issues on CD in Flip Album format and sent them to a fellow 'catter for comment. If the comments are favourable I could make further copies available in exchange for donations to Mudcat. Regards John |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Kernow John Date: 05 Feb 03 - 06:15 PM I should have said follow the link on the front page. Not had time to add it to site index yet. John |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: MMario Date: 05 Feb 03 - 10:03 PM Came through fine for me. WOuld probably be a nice resource. |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Little Robyn Date: 05 Feb 03 - 10:21 PM I've spent an enjoyable hour or more on your web site - found John the Fish again after 30 years and also added the ABC tune finder to my favourites. Thank you. |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: katlaughing Date: 05 Feb 03 - 10:24 PM Thanks for sharing these, John. I was not familiar with them. They look like a fun resource. I had trouble seeing the whole thing without having to move the bar thing over, but that's probably the way I have my browser set. They look really neat. kat |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 05 Feb 03 - 10:38 PM Pleasant childhood memories for many who grew up in the UK during the 1950s-70s; and for many of us, our first conscious introduction to folk songs (well, re-made "children's versions" of them, anyway). I still have some copies of Singing Together from the mid 60's; though I do seem to have drawn all over them at the time... |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Joan from Wigan Date: 06 Feb 03 - 05:00 AM John, that has the potential to be a wonderful resource. As an experiment, I tried printing out a page, as that would be the most useful use to me. However, not only was the image too wide and long to print on one A4 page, it printed yellow on black instead of black on white (very wasteful of ink). Does anyone else find this problem, or can anyone tell me how to correct this please? John, have you tried printing any of the images from the site yourself? What am I doing wrong? (I've never found an image elsewhere that prints in the negative.) Joan |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: the lemonade lady Date: 06 Feb 03 - 07:22 AM Oh what fond memories. I remember singing 'Casey Jones' and 'Long Black Veil' Good old William Appleby... and a radio that was an octagonal board with a big speaker in the middle! Showing my age now. Sal |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Noreen Date: 06 Feb 03 - 08:13 AM What perfect timing, John! A crowd of us got to reminiscing on this very subject at Whitby last year, and Ali has timetabled us to do a 'Singing Together' workshop/singaround at Saddleworth festival this year. See Saddleworth festival thread. Gathering songs and information for it at the moment, so I'm sure your resource will be of great help to our aging memories :0) Why don't you get yourself up to Saddleworth and help us out? (and Malcolm, Joan, Sal and Robyn, if not MMario and katlaughing!) ....Oh, no John, no John, no, John, No! |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 06 Feb 03 - 08:16 AM Joan --- I haven't tried printing, but I'm not getting the whole image on the screen and there are no scrolling bars to move it around. BJ |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: GUEST,Kjohn @School Date: 06 Feb 03 - 08:47 AM Is anyone else experiencing the same problem as Joan from Wigan? I've tried but don't get the same result, ie no yellow involved. The page is too big to print in one go, this was done on purpose as it made it easier to save the image for reading into music scanning software. (To produce a midi). The easiest method for printing from online, for me, is to right click the image, copy and then paste it into my word processor or graphics package. Hope this helps John. |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: GUEST,kjohn@School Date: 06 Feb 03 - 08:56 AM I can't get to the festival Noreen, but could send you a copy of the CD I'm working on that has 20 issues on at the moment. Do you have Hanging Johnny there this year? If so I may be able to send some old copies with them. John |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Noreen Date: 06 Feb 03 - 09:34 AM CD would be great, John! Hanging Johnny aren't on the website as appearing, but Ali will know more. |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 06 Feb 03 - 11:07 AM I always find it better to download the image to my computer and print it from graphics software instead of the browser. You would have more control over it. Strange about the yellow/negative image, but as I remember it, (I looked at a few of them last night), there was BLACK around the edge, and the paper colour was a little yellowed. My scan software would allow me to set the specific area to take the image from so I can avoid that sort of black edging. In the graphics software, I can also "whiten" the yellowed pages. |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: GUEST Date: 06 Feb 03 - 11:19 AM Kernow John, I don't know if this will become a larger project or what editions of Singing Together you have. I have a set running from around 1968 to about 1985 with some gaps. If I have any editions you may need, you are welcome to borrow them. email me at jon@folkinfo.org. Jon |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 06 Feb 03 - 11:23 AM Browsers don't have very good print functions; I do as John and George do for images. My problem with the site is that it uses layers and absolute positioning, which means that anyone with a high-resolution display sees garbled pages with pictures superimposed on text and so on; effectively, some of the links are "hidden" and don't function. |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: IanC Date: 06 Feb 03 - 11:26 AM John I remeber these with pleasure and have a few of the early ones. I'll see which they are. The radio programmes had the excellent effect that most adults now have a repertoire of folk songs and tunes (albeit often bowdlerised) which they are familiar with. You can use this to tremendous advantage in pub sessions where the customers are in the bar with you. Please put my name down for a CD if there's one going! :-) |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Kernow John Date: 06 Feb 03 - 01:37 PM Guest Jon Thanks for the offer. Malcome I didn't appreciate the problems between frames and Hi Res. I'm quickly putting together a no frames version. Thanks for the feedback. Noreen I'll PM you regarding address to send CD to. Jon There will be CD's available I will wait for some feedback from Noreen and t'other 'catter as to the way in which they are put together, to see what changes need to be made. Regards John |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: GUEST,alanww Date: 06 Feb 03 - 02:01 PM This looks a smashimg resource, John. And I've managed to right click and copy and then put into a word document for further manipulaation and printing. (For your info, I've sung at the Top House whilst on holiday in both 2001 and 2002 and I recognise one or two of the faces on the website.) I would very much be interested in a copy of the CD and have PMed you with my address. Let me know how much and to whom. Thanks in advance - and thanks for some good sessions at the Top House! "As I was a-walking down by the sea shore ...!" Alan |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: pattyClink Date: 06 Feb 03 - 02:02 PM Nice project, thanks for the link. The images are huge but that allows for less loss of quality in the fine illustrations. You might want to let people know the table of contents is the LAST page in the series. |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Kernow John Date: 06 Feb 03 - 04:48 PM Thanks PattyClink Unfortunately the contents page changes from issue to issue. I've just prepared a text file and will put that up. It lists all the songs in the first 20 I have scanned and tells you which in issue the song occurs. I've got your pm Alan and I'll get in touch with Bill Sables to see if he is still handling Mudcat Donations and as soon as I get comments back from the first two I'll be in touch. John |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Kernow John Date: 06 Feb 03 - 05:31 PM Autumn 1965 is up. If anyone would like an email as an issue is added, PM me your e-mail address. John |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: bill\sables Date: 06 Feb 03 - 07:09 PM John I am still taking donations for mudcat. I have a few coppies of these books if you are short of any. Cheers Bill |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Kernow John Date: 07 Feb 03 - 06:25 AM DMcG & Noreen CD's in post and instructions in a PM. Regards John |

Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: GUEST Date: 07 Feb 03 - 09:39 AM I've had a hunt around today and as luck would have it, I managed to find an old database I'd made detailing the pamphlets and thier contents. I've thrown a couple of pages together and put them at http://www.folkinfo.org/temp/stlist.asp. In case KJ (or anyone else) wants to see which ones I have and what they contain. Jon |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: GUEST Date: 07 Feb 03 - 10:04 AM I'm having fun with this... Have just decided to add a full listing of all titles for the hell of it. Jon |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: DMcG Date: 07 Feb 03 - 10:08 AM Guest, Jon: Can you make the database available in a suitable form to put on the Kernow Jon's final CD? (I would suggest tab separated data, myself: there are bound to be commas!) |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: GUEST Date: 07 Feb 03 - 10:21 AM I don't see any reason why not Dave. On the other hand, as you are testing the CD for John and are pretty handy with databases, it may make more sense for me to email you the database as it stands and let you do what you want with it. It only contains entries for the pamphlets I have and coud do with extending. Anotherthing it could do with is "The" moving to the end of the title to make ",The". Jon (Freeman) |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: GUEST Date: 07 Feb 03 - 10:24 AM Should have said, it's an Access 97 db. Jon |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: DMcG Date: 07 Feb 03 - 10:26 AM Fine, I can take that. Email away! |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: GUEST,Lanfranc at the orifice Date: 07 Feb 03 - 10:31 AM Great stuff, Kernow John! Could I have a CD, too, please? I have at least two, and possibly more, copies of "Singing Together" from the 50s, which would seem to predate those you have. I will PM you with details in case they might be of use. I have a fairly large collection of sheet music dating from 1900 to the late 1970s, including such gems as the "News Chronicle Song Book" and the "Kent County Song Book". I also have a website (www.folkmusic.org.uk) which is underused. I had better get scanning! Alan |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Kernow John Date: 07 Feb 03 - 05:39 PM Jon The database sounds a good idea. No problem with adding it to the CD's. A couple of people have asked for copies of the CD. I'm hanging on till I get feedback from Noreen and DMcG. In case what I think is good is really naf! The quality on the CD is better than that on the website as I've tried to keep downloading times down. As soon as a decision is made I'll run some off and post that they are available. John |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: nutty Date: 07 Feb 03 - 05:51 PM I have a compilation book 'Singing Together! 100 Songs for Unison Singing' published 1967. Also 'Songs for Singing Together ...pupils book' published 1973 ..... this contains 50 songs voted as most popular by pupils around the British Isles. |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: GUEST Date: 07 Feb 03 - 07:05 PM KJ, the DB... It is safely in the hands of Dave/dgmc and it's up to him to make what, if anything, he wishes to with my trivial start - something done years ago so I could find songs for myself. It's not my business from now on. It was just very easy for me to show what I had got in that way. Nutty, in my primary school days, we used to have a dark blue/almost to a purple colour ST compilation book that was handed out sometimes in music lessons - wondering if that is the '67 book you have. Jon (b.1960) |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: nutty Date: 08 Feb 03 - 03:13 AM Looks like it could be Jon ....... it's the right colour |
Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: DMcG Date: 08 Feb 03 - 03:45 AM Initial comments so far ... It's looking good. The image quality, in particular, is certainly good enough to use for printing, although the music OCR programs I have whinged a bit at it. |

Subject: RE: Singing Together books on Web Site From: Nigel Parsons Date: 27 Oct 07 - 07:26 PM John, It may be worth cross-referencing with the School Songbook Index Permathread where I have already listed the contens of several editions of "Singing Together" & "Time & Tune". If you want to borrow any of the ones I hold (as listed in that thread), or have scans of pages sent to you, then let me know. CHEERS Nigel |

I only have vague memories of it, with mentions of Wild Boar Fell, Mallerstang and the Helm Wind. Probably 1970s?
