Do you remember the Singing Together books?

I have started to scan my copies of these and thought there might be some folks out there who would like to see them.
I have put the first (not the earliest) scanned one on one of my web sites.
Let me know what you think.

If you would like a particular copy scanned and put on the site PM me.

This one is black on white but later copies were in colour.

I have put together a collection of 20 issues on CD in Flip Album format and sent them to a fellow 'catter for comment. If the comments are favourable I could make further copies available in exchange for donations to Mudcat.

Thanks for sharing these, John. I was not familiar with them. They look like a fun resource. I had trouble seeing the whole thing without having to move the bar thing over, but that's probably the way I have my browser set. They look really neat.

Pleasant childhood memories for many who grew up in the UK during the 1950s-70s; and for many of us, our first conscious introduction to folk songs (well, re-made "children's versions" of them, anyway). I still have some copies of Singing Together from the mid 60's; though I do seem to have drawn all over them at the time...

John, that has the potential to be a wonderful resource.

As an experiment, I tried printing out a page, as that would be the most useful use to me. However, not only was the image too wide and long to print on one A4 page, it printed yellow on black instead of black on white (very wasteful of ink). Does anyone else find this problem, or can anyone tell me how to correct this please? John, have you tried printing any of the images from the site yourself? What am I doing wrong? (I've never found an image elsewhere that prints in the negative.)

A crowd of us got to reminiscing on this very subject at Whitby last year, and Ali has timetabled us to do a 'Singing Together' workshop/singaround at Saddleworth festival this year. See Saddleworth festival thread.

Gathering songs and information for it at the moment, so I'm sure your resource will be of great help to our aging memories :0)

Why don't you get yourself up to Saddleworth and help us out? (and Malcolm, Joan, Sal and Robyn, if not MMario and katlaughing!)

Is anyone else experiencing the same problem as Joan from Wigan?
I've tried but don't get the same result, ie no yellow involved.

The page is too big to print in one go, this was done on purpose as it made it easier to save the image for reading into music scanning software. (To produce a midi).

The easiest method for printing from online, for me, is to right click the image, copy and then paste it into my word processor or graphics package.

I always find it better to download the image to my computer and print it from graphics software instead of the browser. You would have more control over it. Strange about the yellow/negative image, but as I remember it, (I looked at a few of them last night), there was BLACK around the edge, and the paper colour was a little yellowed.

My scan software would allow me to set the specific area to take the image from so I can avoid that sort of black edging.

In the graphics software, I can also "whiten" the yellowed pages.

Browsers don't have very good print functions; I do as John and George do for images. My problem with the site is that it uses layers and absolute positioning, which means that anyone with a high-resolution display sees garbled pages with pictures superimposed on text and so on; effectively, some of the links are "hidden" and don't function.

I remeber these with pleasure and have a few of the early ones. I'll see which they are.

The radio programmes had the excellent effect that most adults now have a repertoire of folk songs and tunes (albeit often bowdlerised) which they are familiar with. You can use this to tremendous advantage in pub sessions where the customers are in the bar with you.

Please put my name down for a CD if there's one going!

This looks a smashimg resource, John. And I've managed to right click and copy and then put into a word document for further manipulaation and printing.

(For your info, I've sung at the Top House whilst on holiday in both 2001 and 2002 and I recognise one or two of the faces on the website.)

Nice project, thanks for the link. The images are huge but that allows for less loss of quality in the fine illustrations. You might want to let people know the table of contents is the LAST page in the series.

Unfortunately the contents page changes from issue to issue. I've just prepared a text file and will put that up. It lists all the songs in the first 20 I have scanned and tells you which in issue the song occurs.

I've got your pm Alan and I'll get in touch with Bill Sables to see if he is still handling Mudcat Donations and as soon as I get comments back from the first two I'll be in touch.

I've had a hunt around today and as luck would have it, I managed to find an old database I'd made detailing the pamphlets and thier contents. I've thrown a couple of pages together and put them at http://www.folkinfo.org/temp/stlist.asp. In case KJ (or anyone else) wants to see which ones I have and what they contain.

I don't see any reason why not Dave. On the other hand, as you are testing the CD for John and are pretty handy with databases, it may make more sense for me to email you the database as it stands and let you do what you want with it.

It only contains entries for the pamphlets I have and coud do with extending. Anotherthing it could do with is "The" moving to the end of the title to make ",The".

Could I have a CD, too, please?

I have at least two, and possibly more, copies of "Singing Together" from the 50s, which would seem to predate those you have. I will PM you with details in case they might be of use.

I have a fairly large collection of sheet music dating from 1900 to the late 1970s, including such gems as the "News Chronicle Song Book" and the "Kent County Song Book". I also have a website (www.folkmusic.org.uk) which is underused. I had better get scanning!

The database sounds a good idea. No problem with adding it to the CD's.

A couple of people have asked for copies of the CD. I'm hanging on till I get feedback from Noreen and DMcG. In case what I think is good is really naf!

The quality on the CD is better than that on the website as I've tried to keep downloading times down.

As soon as a decision is made I'll run some off and post that they are available.

I have a compilation book 'Singing Together! 100 Songs for Unison Singing' published 1967.
Also 'Songs for Singing Together ...pupils book' published 1973 ..... this contains 50 songs voted as most popular by pupils around the British Isles.

KJ, the DB... It is safely in the hands of Dave/dgmc and it's up to him to make what, if anything, he wishes to with my trivial start - something done years ago so I could find songs for myself. It's not my business from now on. It was just very easy for me to show what I had got in that way.

Nutty, in my primary school days, we used to have a dark blue/almost to a purple colour ST compilation book that was handed out sometimes in music lessons - wondering if that is the '67 book you have.

Initial comments so far ... It's looking good. The image quality, in particular, is certainly good enough to use for printing, although the music OCR programs I have whinged a bit at it.

Does anyone have a copy of 'The Pennine Way', please? I only have vague memories of it, with mentions of Wild Boar Fell, Mallerstang and the Helm Wind. Probably 1970s? I don't even know if it WAS a Singing Together booklet - but I can visualise it and I think it probably was.

Singing Together books.

I would love to see some of the 1969-1974 books because I used to have them from school, I remember some of the songs so well, Marco Polo - the fastest on the sea, and I may get the numbers wrong but I have three sisters on the sea?
