I realize you asked specifically for Scottish lullabies. However, this too is a good compilation CD entitled Celtic Twilight 3: Lullabies. The line up is as so:

The "Celtic Twilight 3" album is verra guid, tho' I cannae reca' th' outfit whae producit it. There's anither twa recordin's whae micht help ye oot:

1) "The Planet Sleeps" (sori, nae production info on this ane, either) is an international gaitherin' o' lullabyes, an' features beautiful renditions o' "Chi Mi Na Morbheanna" (Scots Gaelic) an' an Irish Gaelic song sumpit like--forgie my spellin'--"An Criosd An Siol."

2) "The Celtic Cradle" by--och, dear--Joemy Somebody...She's a lairner o' Celtic Languages, Doon Under, an' she sings all manner o' Celtic lullabyes but disnae include th' wairds in her liner notes. SInce she's singin' in Welsh an' three kinds o' Gaelic, ye think she'd dae us th' kindness...th' tape's still a potential source o' sangs.

3) "So Early In The Morning" (Irish Children's Songs, Rhymes, and Games sung by the Clancy Children) is a grait gaitherin' o' material an' includes some lullabyes alang wi' th' ither stuff. 4) "The World Sings Goodnight" tapes ane an' twa baith hae some Scottish an' Irish singin', if I reca' correctly, but it's been a while since I listened tae them sae I cannae say for sure.

5) Almaist all Gaelic singers put ane oor twa songs on ilka tape whae are commonly usit as lullabyes... an' for singin' in Braid Scots, luik tae th' recordin's o' Ewan MacColl oor Sheena Wellington. Here's hopin' this gies ye a few ideas, at least...I jist wish I cuid reca' th' distributors' names for ye!

While we are on this one, there was a Scottish lullaby/ballad that had to do with the Highland evictions that I can't seem to find. The chorus went:

Hush, Hush, time to be sleepin

I've asked for info on this song before, and Bruce O gave me some info on other related songs but does anyone know the words to The Water Kelpie, which I believe is an old Scottish lullaby about a horse[?] which can change into human form. I have the written music - melody and chords only, but no words.

I've been looking for info about it and the words for many years, but no luck so far.

Big Mick asked about a Highland Clearance lullaby - the one you're looking for is in the database, I think the title is "Don't Cry in Your Sleep". I learned a verse that's not in the dbase from a recording by Isle St. Clair

Aaaargh, I know that "Hush Hush"one. I think the Poozies/Sileas sing it, but I'm not sure. Either it's them or it's just a friend of mine who sings it. I'll ask him when I see him. Another grim but very beautiful one is on Catherine-Ann MacPhee's "Canan Nan Gailheal"called "An Nighean Nan Geng Taladh" which is about a dead mother coming back as a ghost because their step-parents beat her children. Must be very reassuring if you're a kid.*G* The album has only the one lullaby but since it is very beautiful I though I'd mention it anyway. Sophie
