Just to clear up a few misconceptions....

My trivia wizardry is actually best from nineteen TWENTY to nineteen sixty THREE or four. Post Bill Mazeroski and Ralph Terry and I start fallin' apart.

Now I DID meet Heather at one of our games, and perhaps she might have been more impressed had we been playing BASEBALL rather than slow pitch softball....but the truth is I really DID whale on those 18 mile an hour heaters!

Rick- Well, they might have moved the fences in on you during your hayday, but to make matters worse, weren't you also playing in the 'dead ball' era? Not a bit fair, but what respect, big fella! If you're interested, the rest of the scouting report on you reads as follows- 1- has a bit of trouble with the spitter and knuckle ball, but hits the the shit out of the heater and curveball. 2- Tends to hustle more with two outs, because he knows there's cold beer waiting for him in the dugout. 3- Has been know to do some serious 'beaver shooting', so most women in the 'box' seats tend to wear slacks, even on hot days. 4- Like the Babe, he tends to wolf down a hot dog or two between innings, but claims he gets more energy as the game goes on. 5- He once lifted his arm and pointed with his index finger towards the outfield fence, indicating where he would deposit the ball, however, the evidence later showed he noticed a young guitar player forming an incorrect chord on his guitar. He gave the poor kid proper shit, and then took him out for a pop after the game. Once a teacher, always a teacher. The Sporting News noted that this particular scout was immediately fired after filing this report. Finally, if you want to know anything about baseball trivia between 1940-1960, Rick's your man. Anything later, it's just a rumour to the poor man.

Your evaluation (you HAD to have been there) is good but not perfect. There was never anything wrong with my glove, I just got to the point where I couldn't get it in the way of the ball fast enough!

Now of course that wasn't the ONLY problem in my declining baseball years. I simply was the second slowest runner in the league. The slowest was Marc, my shrink, who was 60! Twice I hit rockets to right field .....and was thrown OUT at first! That really DOES hurt.

Now, in the last three years of my career another problem was created. Some total dork claimed that too many cheap home runs were goin' over the right field fence......so they made them into DOUBLES! Jeesus Christ, the five or six 'blooper' guys in the league, didn't get any more homers....but I didn't either, and I hit mine a long ways!

That was about the end........oh....and we bought a house, so Heather wouldn't let me out to play twice a week. I had to stay home and teach banjo.....bummer!

I love our local team too - the Orlando Rays. Between them and the fact that I see 10 to 20 spring training gamesw a year, I hope Orlando never gets a big league team. I've only been to see Tampa Bay once, but I also hate their stadium - looks like a flying saucer crashed in St. Pete.

Rick- I think that's it's a great pity that J.P. couldn't have seen you in your prime, knocking the balls over the wall, while playing in the musician's league. I think you played first base in your early years, and then moved into the DH position. Scouts tell me that you were all timber and no leather. Is that true? And yes, the Jays will probably go to 0-4 tonite against the Twinkies, but just maybe we can keep the opposition to under 10 runs, and I'll consider that a moral victory. Speaking of the Twins, I wonder if Kirby Puckett had O.J.'s team of lawyers working for him? In that case, perhaps he would have put on his undersized centrefielder's glove to prove his innocence.

I've mentioned this before but twenty odd years ago I watched a very young Randy Johnson scare the living crap out of the Nashville Sounds. I walked down to the screen (this WAS a minor league park) and his pitches were simply lethal. No control, each fastball potential death, and Nashville knew it.

Toronto trying to stretch their streak to four tonight. Tanyon Sturtze starting...so they'll probably make it.

How can you not love minor league ball? One of the nicer things in my life is that I live close to a city with a minor league ball club. I've been watching the Columbus Clippers since they were the Redbirds back in the 50's and then the Jets. They're the AAA Club for the Yankees and you can see a good game and have a fun night with the family and spend less than 50 bucks including gas, parking, food, and assorted ballpark junk. Additionally, there is someone who's giving away tickets for almost every game when a block is bought by some company.

Last year and almost every year we had free tickets to "Dime-A-Dog Night" and our two families went (4 adults, 4kids). We got there early and were able to upgrade to box seats, ate around 40 dogs, bought a couple of caps, bought drinks and some other munchies too, and went home after seeing a damn good ball game feeling great because the whole night for EIGHT people had cost about $65.00. Geeziz, I can't get a pair of decent Reds tickets for that. Any night's good but the promo nights are especially easy to get free tickets for and like I say, if you want to do the upgrade, it's cheap. We also hit "Sliders Night" last year sponsored by the Slider maker----White Castle. White Castle burgers at a quarter a piece......Man, you can be sicker than hell for only a few bucks!!!

But the ball is always good and that's the main thing. The stadium is park style, close in to downtown, and they went back to grass a few years ago.....just great!!! Wayne and I always enjoy the games and end up commenting invariably about the action. On a good night you see damn near every kind of play and it's rarely boring. If I wasn't just getting through an acute attack of diverticulitis we'd load the van up with both families and go tonight! Check the coupon on the Columbus Clippers Home Page.

Seamus, I'm with you on minor league baseball. For the first few years I lived in Hawaii there was a Hawaii Winter Baseball League. Only 4 teams (Hilo Stars--our home team, West Oahu Cane Fires, Maui Stingrays and Honolulu Sharks). A and AA players (including two women at one point). The stadium in Hilo was small and friendly, you got to see the players up close and really feel a part of the game. Sadly, the league couldn't sustain itself and folded after 4 years. I miss it. A local journalist wrote a book about the league, called The Boys of Winter. Just in case anyone might be interested.

I really like the ideas of Willyguest, in regards to getting back to basics for baseball. We must remind ourselves, the lords of baseball, as well as the players, that is still and always will be OUR(the fans) game. We are the paying customers who've long deserved a whole better. Naming Stadia after corporations is monstrous, and having to see ads behind home plate is demeaning to this great sport. I know that sports is all about money nowadays, but it doesn't mean that it ain't sickening. Now Rick, you just gotta relax a bit. We're 3 games into the season, and even though the Bronx Bombers just sent a strong message to these young Jays, let's give these guys time to mature and blossom. If J.P. and about 26 or so other GM's had the Yankees payroll, I think things would be a lot different. Granted they spend their money pretty wisely, unlike the crappy Mets. Somebody once said that baseball is a funny game, so when the Jays go back to NY next week, it could be that they take 3 out 4 games. Unlikely yes, but strange things happen in the world of sports. Maybe some nutbar in the Yanks pr dept. will put bird droppings on a Jays hat, and give us extra incentive to beat those guys. The next great young hurler in the bigs is Mark Prior, former number 1 pick of the Cubbies. Looks like much better days ahead for Dusty's boys.

All seriousness aside, minor-league ball is one of the best values in the country.
When I'm on the road performing, which I am frequently, I'll always try and catch a minor-league game. Single-A, double-A, triple-A, the top ticket price is around seven bucks, there isn't a bad seat in the house, nada the players, coaches and umps are hustling their asses off.
The players sign autographs for little kids, the beer and hotdogs taste just as good, and it won't bankrupt a family of four for a night at the ballyard.
Hell, I love high-school and Legion ball too. And Little League.

Owners "cared" more about the fans because 1) they had complete control over the lives of their playesrs & 2) every team lived and died on grandstand receipts.

Today, the players have a lot of autonomy and with radio, TV, naming of their stadiums, product promotion, etc. the only reason the owners care if there are fans in the stands is because "canned" crowd sounds still sound fake.

Screw the players, screw the owners, screw the commisioner, screw the courts that have repeadedly held up the oscene fiction that Baseball is different from "normal" business.

I was hoping that with Marge Schott mostly out of the picture that the Red's would loosten up the purse strings a little. Not pull a Florida Marlins thing, but to build a more balanced team.

Fans now say the Baseball is just a business. It always has been folks, it's just that in times past the owners cared more about the fans. Seems like a good busines should build it's customer (fan) base and work hard to keep it. Guess I'm a little outdated in that area.

I have been a fan of major league baseball, but with overblown salaries, over-advertised venues from the ballpark itself to the radio and TV broadcasts, to the video games, endorsements, ad infinitum of all professional sports, it seems that the vgame itself has been as exploited by the mega-corporations as badly as our beloved music has been exploited in the same way. With music we have alternatives. Small, independent labels, local performers, public radio programming, etc.
I think it is time for some wealthy retired athletes to have an alt.league for our beloved National Pastime. Let it start small and grow in its own unusual ways. Internet play-by-play, indy label baseball cards, barnstorming tours to areas with small markets, who knows what or how?
(Historical Note: In his early days with the Bluegrass Boys, Bill Monroe always toured with a group who could take the field. Back then most towns had a local ball team. The bluegrass boys would field their teasm against the locals in the afternoon as a promo for the evening concert. Thin that would happen today?)

Sorry, all I've been able to hear on the radio for the last 8 years here in Hawaii is the Giants (who were, it should be told, my second favorite team as a kid). I'm still basking in the days of Jim Bunning, Chris Short, John Callison, Richie (that's right, Richie) Allen, Tony Taylor...hell, I still remember all their numbers! (32, 41, 6, 15, and 8, since you asked.) And what's this I hear about a new stadium? What's wrong with Shibe Park? (Actually it had already been renamed Connie Mack Stadium when I went there, but my dad always called it Shibe Park.)

Oh, and Bobert, your dates are a teeny bit off. I saw Roberts pitch in the first Phillies game I ever went to, but that was, I believe, in '60 or '61. He retired before the '64 season. We had the aforementioned Bunning and Short...and not too much else. Art Mahaffey? John Boozer? puh-lease! And Rick Wise was just an 18-year-old rookie--but a good one.

Sorry Walking Eagle, but I am a 3rd generation White Sox fan. The only way most Sox fans want the Cubs in the Series is so they could beat them in 4 straight.

I gotta admit you still have one of the best fields and I wish that the lights could come down.

My dad used to say (quoting someone else, of course) the the Chigaoan's definition of heaven is the have the Cubs and the Sox in the Series, Have it tied to the 7th game, In the 7th, played at Wrigley, have it tied late in the game and then called on account of darkness.

There is the Cubbies Curse. Any original cubbie that gets traded to another team makes that team a looser.

But really everyone, don't we ALL love the Cubbies? Who among us wouldn't pull for them should they get into the World Series? Well, except for the fans of the other team of course.

As for Cincinnati, their outfield could be one of the best if Griffey plays up to par. Adam Dunn and Aus Kearns complete the trio. If things go right Dunn could be another George Foster.

But the Reds may switch Boone to second base to make room for Brandon Larson at third. That would leave aging Barry Larkin at SS which could weadken the middle infield defense.

As for the Phills, yes they have some power sluggers, but they better put some younger arms at the back end of the rotation. The bullpen is a little iffy as well.

When Washington held the contest to name the new hockey team my father submitted "Puckers".

"Washington Puckers" kind of has a nice ring to it.

If Washington gets a baseball team they better do something about the street crime in the stadium area. Footballs not so bad, 8 day games maybe a sunday or monday night game every once in awhile. But all those baseball night games!

I have Ken Burns "Baseball" on DVD on order. Looking forward to a major lazy streak soon.

The Curse of the Bambino is what makes Red Sox fans root for the team year after year; careless management and ineptitude is what makes Cubbies fans root for them.
The might of the Yanks and A-Rod's salary is of no consequence.
Of course there's no other team we'd rather beat than the Yankees, and we'd love to see Steinbrenner get so steamed and furious that he'd inflate and burst leaving pinstriped guts, entrails and shit all over Yankee Stadium.

Great to see the various supporters of individual teamings coming out, after a winter of hibernation. It seems certain that the Expos will leave Montreal and head to the DC area, or perhaps Portland,(a long shot). A bad stadium and the Cdn dollar didn't help the situation. Even my beloved Blue Jays could eventually be headed for a similiar fate. Even with the new baseball agreement, the gap between the have and have nots will probably stay the same, which takes away from the integrity of the game. Economics rules the roost in all pro sports. At least this season for ball fans, there's no threat of a strike, so it will be business as usual. My name for the new Washington team would be the 'Bushers'. They've failed twice before to support ball down there, so what has changed? Anyway, good luck to all fans of major league teams, and let the games continue.

Honestly, thank the gods for baseball season. Somehow we can manage to do the same amount of screaming and finger-pointing, but it doesn't have the same feeling of combat fatigue that I've found in all the focking war coverage (I know, the season is early yet, and the closest the Mariners or Giants will get to a pennant is if they buy one at a souvenir stand). Something about all that messy "brother against brother, line in the sand, spit in your eye" stuff that is horrible on a battlefield, but fan-freaking-tastic on a baseball diamond. PLAY ON!

The Cubs? Management simply hasn't cared. And I guess the patrons haven't resorted to violence yet (or enough).

Now last night we got a glimpse of things to come......Friggin Clemens (who is even disliked by his own team.....quick! think of others with that label..Reggie, Daryl, anyone else?)

Anyway...Clemens has developed a FORK BALL (nope, what he'd been throwing was a splitter) and it simply Disappears. The guy's gonna get at least a couple of good (18-22 wins) seasons out of it.

Jeter gets hurt! Panic? Not with THAT team.

They steal a mean lookin' Cuban pitcher (Contreras) away from BOSTON, and the guy comes in and looks dangerous and hungry. He WILL be a strter.

Now is there any team in baseball that'll get 15 wins out of that Toronto bashin' Lardball David Wells? Yup. The Yanks. Trust me, he'll win 15 just to spite Steinbrenner.

This Soriano guy! He looks like a friggin' prayin' Mantas!! This guy is JUST coming into his own...did you SEE how he hits those homers...he just golfs bad pitches.

Ohhhhhh poor Toronto. Our ONLY pitcher gets creamed.
