Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Matthew Edwards Date: 22 May 03 - 06:49 PM That was a very enjoyable evening, with a good variety of singers and songs, and a good appreciative audience. The Railway clientele was intriguingly bizarre that night;- comprising hardcore folkies, cyclists, and pigeon fanciers as well as the usual underage* alcopop drinkers on the pool table. It was nice to meet so many old and new friends, and to hear so many interesting songs. Alan, thanks for bringing back memories of Harry Cox with your "Australia", even though I break out in giggles every time over the line about 'entering the bush of Australia'. Harry - loved the Prickly Bush, and its good to meet you at last. John (aka Geordie) you've found a real power in your delivery so that "Sorrows Away" & "Blackleg Miner" both were really effective. John J sang more verses of "The Cuckoo's Nest" than I'd ever heard, and the singer on my right who added a new line to "Blackbirds and Thrushes" deserves to be I'm previously engaged for 4 June, but I'll be there again for 18 June. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Harry Basnett Date: 22 May 03 - 07:02 PM Nice to meet you, Matthew....and thanks for your rendition of 'The Cruel Mother'. I don't know where JJ got all those verses from either!! All the best..............Harry. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Bernard Date: 22 May 03 - 08:27 PM He pinches them from Alan! Of course, Alan pinched them from JJ in the first place...!! Glad we got that cleared up! Yes, another really good night in the Snug! Looks like we're on to a winner! That's enough from me - I'm knackered! Just back from the CLive Gregson concert in the 'upstairs club'! |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Alan Date: 23 May 03 - 07:01 AM Another very successful and most enjoyable evening and everybody seemed to enjoy it. Good company, good singing, and excellent Old Speckled Hen (even though I could only sample half a pint of it 'cos I was driving). From the resposes it seems that everybody enjoyed it as much as I did; I can't believe it's going so well. Helen; sorry if I put you off by joining in your Gallant Poacher with a slightly different version. I'll try to do better in future. |

Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Harry Basnett Date: 06 Jun 03 - 03:53 PM Another cracking night on the 4th. Well done Alan and JJ for getting this off the ground. It's worth going to see Diz battling with fits of the giggles... Looking forward to the 18th! Love............Harry and Sara. :0) |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Matthew Edwards Date: 06 Jun 03 - 05:13 PM Sorry to have had to miss this week. Will Diz be giving a repeat performance on the 18th? :-) |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Harry Basnett Date: 07 Jun 03 - 06:09 AM There is a strong possibility, Matthew....and when she's not giggling that lady can certainly put a song across..... |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Yvonne Date: 09 Jun 03 - 07:57 AM Thanks for those kind words, Harry It was a great night--we ALL warbled wonderfully. I have a dreadful virus in my computor (so I am told) so this thread is from work--which will probably result in the sack and it will be all your fault!!! ;o) Don't listen to him, Matthew--I was the soul of decorum. I am hoping to be there on Wednesday 18th but will be late. Look forward to seeing you and Harry and the lovely Sara then! Cheers Diz |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,JohnJ...not a guest! Date: 16 Jun 03 - 02:38 PM This Wednesday, 18th June, and also the following Wednesday. John |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: John Routledge Date: 16 Jun 03 - 03:45 PM By way of a refresh hope my visit this week will not lower the tone. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Bernard Date: 16 Jun 03 - 07:59 PM It's alright, JR, we can always bolt the door when you go for a pint!! ;^)) |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST Date: 17 Jun 03 - 03:14 PM refresh |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Alan Date: 19 Jun 03 - 04:42 AM Last night we had our 4th singaround and once again it was a very sucessful and enjoyable evening. The standard of singing continues to be excellent with a good variety. I can't remember what the beer was that JJ kept feeding me, but that was almost as good as the singing and the comany. Thanks to everyone for making it such an enjoyable night |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Yvonne Date: 19 Jun 03 - 04:07 PM Yes-- a good night it was again.JJ fed me some of that beer as well, Alan and damn fine it was too!! May dig my bike out and peddle there next week! See you all then. Diz |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: John Routledge Date: 19 Jun 03 - 07:48 PM A great night was had by me also. The song session is developing very nicely and will I am sure continue to progress as the venue is so good. Please keep dates posted as and when they become available. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Alan Date: 25 Jun 03 - 06:52 AM Don't forget there's another one tonight. Hope its as good as previous ones. If it stays as hot as it currently is we'll have to get Bernard to stand on JJs back and open some windows. We could then wedge them open with a bodhran. Or we could just sit on the lawn and consume copious amounts of the guest beer. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: John J Date: 25 Jun 03 - 11:23 AM You tonight as in 'tonight'? Oh good. I'll come on my bike and have a pint or 9. JJ |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Bernard Date: 26 Jun 03 - 06:44 AM We've tentatively (?!) settled on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, to make it easier for people to keep track. This will mean occasionally there will be a gap of two weeks between sessions, but that just allows a bit of extra learning time for HelenJ! So the next one is July 9th... |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Alan Date: 26 Jun 03 - 07:22 AM Thanks for reminding me of that Bernard, I couldn't remember what we'd finally agreed - must be the effects of the excellent Crag Rat beer. Anyway, I'm glad it's that week because I'm on hols the following week and I don't want to miss one. Once again it was a cracking night with lots of good singing and excellent selection of songs. It puts me to shame, so I'll have to learn some propper songs and stop doing those shanties and chorusy things. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Yvonne Date: 26 Jun 03 - 07:51 AM Yes-- a great night once again. Don't you dare stop doing Shanties and Chrousy things, Alan!! We need them after the doom and gloom I sing--but I think Liz surpassed me last night ;o) and wonderful songs they were too! Roll on July 9th! Diz |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Bernard Date: 26 Jun 03 - 10:28 AM I think the star turn is the Helen and JJ double act!! Hysterical!! Never realised how amusing the 'Wizard' could be!! Helen had her prompt sheet, but no spectacles, and JJ was trying to prompt but didn't know which bit she was up to!! Added to which, Helen kept forgetting the tune! Anyway, Al, if you don't do shanties and chorusy things, you will have your licence revoked - and that can prove very painful in the Trussocks! It's very refreshing to hear everyone making the effort to dredge up great songs from dim and distant memory, or learning 'new' ones - and making such a good job of it! Now, what was I supposed to be doing? Work? Wassat, then?!! |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Harry Basnett Date: 26 Jun 03 - 06:01 PM Re. the Cicely Fox Smith discussion last night...she was born in Lymm on the 1st. of February, 1882. Her father was a barrister at law, Eichard Smith B.A. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Matthew Edwards Date: 26 Jun 03 - 06:46 PM Thanks Harry, but 1882 doen't bring up any nice round numbers for a celebration - or not until 2032 (150 years) which is a bit too long to wait! She died in 1954 - could we commemorate her next year? Apparently Danny MacLeod gave a talk at Lancaster this Easter, did anbody catch it? There were a lot of "doom and gloom" songs! - did anybody keep a body count? At a conservative estimate we must have sung about nine or ten deaths and murders, four rapes/seductions, plus one or two illegitimate births. What are the crime statistics like in Lymm since the singarounds started? Should I call in DI Francis Child to investigate? |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Detective Inspector F.J.Child Date: 26 Jun 03 - 07:17 PM I am currently busy investigating the mysterious death of one Jemmy Grove from the north country. However we have had to consider over 300 different accounts of his decease, most of which point at the involvement of a certain Barbara Allen whom we would like to interview. Some accounts have advised us that she may have already died out of sorrow, but in order to test this we have applied for an exhumation, which will proceed as soon as we have removed the tangled growths of roses and briars from the graves. When I have sufficient time I would like to consider several reports from Lymm of prolonged accounts of murder, rape, incest, infanticide, and various supernatural occurrences. I am looking for several bearded sandal-wearing males with guitars, and their female accomplices, who may have some useful information. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Harry Basnett Date: 26 Jun 03 - 07:19 PM Next year sounds good to me, Matthew....she died April 8th. 1954 so there's a date to aim at. Not very good at doing limks so if someone could do a blicky for the Cicely Fox Smith thread on the 'cat I'd be much obliged! Must agree..the body count must have been massive last night...no idea how many were on the Barbary pirate ship..(the only deaths I can be held accountable for throughout the entire evening!). |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Harry Basnett Date: 26 Jun 03 - 07:24 PM 'cor Blimey, Guv....Wot abaht that George Collins, eh? Six maidens all in one night??!!! Dead??!!!? and all for 'is ruddy sake...ain't natcherel if you arsks me it ain't..... |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Alan Date: 27 Jun 03 - 04:45 AM Pity you missed the previous week Harry, we heard that there wre hundreds killed on the trains at Waterloo (or did I mss hear?) |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Harry Basnett Date: 27 Jun 03 - 03:27 PM That should have read Richard Smith for Cicely's father....her mother was called Alice Wilson. Very good, Alan..we'll have to watch out for people being killed taking the Tights of Alma! |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Yvonne Date: 27 Jun 03 - 03:41 PM I will phone our local historian if I get a chance over the weekend and see if he can help with any further information re Cicely Fox Smith, Harry. Diz |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,HelenJ Date: 28 Jun 03 - 03:52 AM I am loving this Sing in the Snug to death - love the songs; people and general atmosphere - even though I appear to have taken on the role of comedienne! Well I only had the tune that morning courtesy of Bernard - I concentrated so much on remembering it I forgot the words. (Well - it can happen to anyone - I suppose...) Have filled my diary (2nd and 4th week) up to the end of the year just in case it slips my memory!! Roll on the next meet and I ' more or less' promise not to cause unseemly larfter in future. Looking forward to Lin and Nic re-appearance. Everyone - you are terrific! HelenJ |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Harry Basnett Date: 28 Jun 03 - 05:58 AM It's lovely to mix in a bit of laughter with the singing..."Songs in the Snug" proves that singing traditional song can be fun. It doesn't have to be "po-faced intensity"!! Helen........we love you to bits! Love.............Harry and Sara. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Yvonne Date: 28 Jun 03 - 06:05 AM In total agreement with you, Helen. It is indeed a turning into a wonderful night--so relaxed and friendly. It matters not one iota whether anyone forgets a verse/tune--or to 'wibble and warble' in the right places. We also love you causing 'unseemly larfter' so we will not hold you to that promise!!! Nik n Lyn should be back this next week , so even more lovely music to listen too--long may we continue. Maybe we can also persuade a few others who love the music to come along as well? Matthew seems to think it is worth the journey and Harry and Sara too! Diz |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Matthew Edwards Date: 29 Jun 03 - 04:44 PM Oh please, Helen we need lots more unseemly larfter, though I suppose the role of comedian/comedienne could be shared out if you want a rest from the position! Diz - what music? I only come for the beer!!! Have just got home from Chorley Festival where the ballad session provoked severe carnage; deaths by drowning, poisoning, wee penknife, etc. with the usual quota of rapes-and-pillages. Ellen Mitchell sang a ballad about a man who feigned his own death in order to seduce a local maid when she came to his wake (NB this is not a recommended technique!) although it does provoke some discussion about which body parts are affected by rigor mortis! |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Bernard Date: 29 Jun 03 - 08:45 PM From what I've seen, Matthew, you need to be worrying more about Liquor Mortis!!! Seriously (?!), the lack of competitiveness is what is making 'Snog in the Guns' so enjoyable. As Harry said, it isn't intense. We've all been to those sort of gatherings...!! We aren't looking for prissy perfection, we are enjoying the beauty of traditional-style songs in the type of setting that they were mostly intended for. That's why it's so good! Although most of the songs are Acker Bilk... erm, Acapulco... errrr... unaccompanied, it isn't exclusively so. However, anyone turning up with a Marshall stack and Fender Strat will find we are a tad hostile...!! |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Schantieman Date: 30 Jun 03 - 05:17 AM So when's the next one then? I might actually be able to make it this week! Steve |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Alan Date: 30 Jun 03 - 06:16 AM We will be meeting on 2nd and 4th Wednesdays throughout the summer, so our next will be on 9th July. Look forward to seeing you again Steve. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Matthew Edwards Date: 30 Jun 03 - 08:54 AM There are several threads already on Mudcat for Cicely Fox Smith, and her poetry, and the songs which various people have created from them. Danny MacLeod has done a lot of research into her life and work, and he will be giving another presentation at Warwick Festival (the programme is available here:- Warwick Festival) on Saturday 26 July 2003, at 10:30 AM in the Living Tradition Centre. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: John Routledge Date: 30 Jun 03 - 10:31 AM Will rustle up a few suspects hopefully. See you 9th July |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Yvonne Date: 05 Jul 03 - 07:57 AM I still haven't got around to finding out more about Cicely Fox Smith but promise I will by Wednesday? Are you going to Warwick, Matthew?? Good to hear you are going to make it back to us Steve. Roll on Wednesday. Diz |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Matthew Edwards Date: 05 Jul 03 - 01:45 PM I went to my local club here after missing a couple of weeks and bumped into Gordon Morris of Marrowbones who has recorded quite a few of CFS poems, and he gave me a sampler CD with some of his settings on it. I haven't made my mind up yet about going to Warwick - I enjoyed it last year. Looking forward to Wednesday. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Yvonne Date: 05 Jul 03 - 02:03 PM Great news Matthew--you and Harry know far more than me about CFS and she was born in the village I have lived in for the last thirty years!! Shame on me ;0) See you Wednesday. Diz |
