We were motoring through Balmoral on a cold, windy, raw October night some years ago. Even though the Royals were In Residence, NONE of them -- not a single bloody one! -- even so much as offered a couple of visiting Yanks a cup of tepid tea!! The Scots did. The Irish did. The English did. But not the Bloody Royals, noooooooo.

When we returned I immediately cut them dead, all of them, and have have had no communication with them since. Someday Chucky or Liz or Phil or Andy will be be motoring around Idaho and I'll have the chance to offer them a cup of tea, and I will, too, because I'll be big about it.

Royalty isn't really the issue Mike. I am a republican (in the UK sense of the word). The point is, because I want to see this silly institution ended, it does not mean I want to join in the schadenfreude and spite which emerges when the Buck House Brigade has difficulties. My quarrel is with the institution rather than the personalities. I don't give a bugger's where the royal poker goes. It's none of my business.
I respect everyone's right to privacy in their private life whether it's pop stars, film stars, politicians or the man who serves me a pint in the pub. I am always puzzled that people who profess to disdain cruel sports elsewhere take such malicious interest in the sex lives of others.
I want to see the end of monarchy in the UK, but I am unable to work up the same amount of dislike for the Windsors which I have for the creeps who write spiteful stories in the tabloid press.

I'm also a republican but I confine my criticism to the institution rather than individuals (plenty republicans are aalso less than perfect). The Queen, for example, seems to be a genuinely decent individual who has "served" Britain dutifully for so long. I'm sure she would rather have been an "ordinary" person, given the experiences she had had.

Hell's bells, if a member of the Royal Family were overhead letting a discreet fart in church, there are people around who would leap up and scream "Royal scandal! Royal scandal!"

All anyone knows so far is that there was an "alleged incident" (nobody will say what the incident was, if anything, indeed, happened at all) and it is further alleged that Prince Charles was involved, which he unequivocally denies. The courts have put a cork in everybody's mouth, so no one outside the "inner circle" knows what the incident (if any) involved. So what's left? Speculation.

Does it strike anybody else besides me that people are just assuming that it (a double assumption, since they are assuming that an "incident" actually took place, which has not been confirmed) involves something of a sexual nature? Especially of a "deviant" sexual nature? Leaping to this conclusion when there is nothing to go on is really pretty pathetic, and it says more about the people doing the leaping than it does about Prince Charles.

Isn't it a pity that so many people have so little to do of any real importance that they can spend all their time and energy speculating loudly and gleefully about what other people may or may not do with their wee-wees?

Thanks, JennyO. I remember when the papers in Canada were all on about the stuff between Margaret and Pierre and various musical groups and actors, etc. Most of us (Little Hawk, observe!) COULDN'T have cared less. Eventually, it went away. We have a few smut papers in Canada, and I guess they do well enough to keep publishing, but fortunately not well enough to be taken seriously.
