Subject: Lyr Req: Oh Little Girl I love you but you're...
From: GUEST,Diana Sedenquist

I'm trying to remember the lyrics to a funny old song that my Dad used to sing. It's a song about a young woman who is preparing to go to bed but before she does she has to take off her wig and her glass eye and her false limbs. Right now I'm remembering just a couple lines from the song:

"You put your glass eye upon the table and your ---- under the bed..."

And the final line is: "Oh little girl, I love you, but you're scattered everywhere."

Thank you for the help.

Diana

Plenty of "dismembered bride" songs in the forum, often sung to "After the Ball was Over", but I don't know any with that last line.

Diana is looking for the lyrics from "My Little Girl I Love You." I have a copy on the Bluebird label from the 30's, sung by Curly Williams, orchestra by Jimmie Revard & The Oklahoma Playboys.

"My little girl, you got sleepy, and you went upstairs to bed.
You put your false hair upon the dresser, and your peg-leg under the bed.
You put your glass eye upon the window and your swell teeth on the chair.
My little girl, you know I love you, but you're scattered here and there."

Subject: Lyr Add: MY LITTLE GIRL I LOVE YOU (verse 2)
From: 12-stringer
Date: 28 Feb 11 - 03:00 AM

The other verse is the "straight" one, sung to the same melody. This was a 1915 pop song, written by Albert von Tilzer, and was a favorite among hillbilly string bands in the 1920s and 1930s. Jimmie Revard's band, the Oklahoma Playboys. is mostly forgotten today but was one of the best western swing groups of that music's Golden Age. They were jazzmen and hot as a six-shooter on Reno Street.

The straight verse goes like this:

My little girl, you know I love you, and I long for you each day
My little girl, I'm dreaming of you, though you're many miles away
There was a time, down in the wildwood, When you promised you'd be true
My little girl, you know I love you, and I'm coming back to you.

Those are the lyrics from the Revard 78. They vary slightly but not significantly from the original set. Revard only does the chorus (straight and parody), not the verse or the interlude riff. The UCSB cylinder preservation site has a free download of a 1915 Edison, and there are a couple of other pop recordings at jazz-on-line.com. Song is very friendly to three-chord guitarists.

My dad use to sing that song to all of the "girls" in our family
the lyrics that I know are....

My little girl, she weighs 260
and everyday she gains a pound
my little girl, you keep on growing
and you're miles and miles around.
You know the lane, down near the wildwood
where you barely could get through
My little girl, you know I love you
and I'm coming back to you.

My little girl, who weighed 260
she went upstairs to go to bed
She layed her false hair upon the dresser
and her peg leg under the bed
She laid her false teeth upon the table
and her false arm in the chair
my little girl you know I love you
but you're scattered everywhere

I ain't a kiddin'
but you're scattered everywhere

(This is the "straight" song without the dismantled bride theme.)

My Little girl, you know I love you\
But it happened the night that we wed
You put your wig upon the dresser
And your peg leg under the bed
You put your teeth upon the mantle
and your glass eye in a chair
my little girl you know I love you
but you're scattered everywhere.

But there is one that begins My little darlin' do you remember on the night that we were wed? Then the song has her scattering her glass eye, her wooden leg, her false teeth around the room. But the last line is is definitely, "my little darlin' I want to squeeze you, but you're scattered everywhere. The music is almost like the My Little Girl I Love You fast tune. Does anyone remember that?

Oh little girl, when you get tired and you go upstairs to bed.
put your false teeth in some water, throw your peg-leg under the bed.
put your glass eye on the table and your wig hat on the chair.
Oh little girl, you know I love you, though you're scattered here and there."

My Grandpa sang me a similar song to the tune of ‘My little girl, you know I love you’:

My little girl, she has a glass eye,
That she rolls across the floor.
My little girl, she has a wooden leg,
That she hangs behind the door.
My little, she has some false teeth,
That she puts them on the chair.
My little girl, you know I love you,
But you’re scattered everywhere!

Oh little girlie, you know I love you
As you wander up to bed
You put your false teeth upon the dresser
And your peg leg by the bed
You put your glass eye on the window
And your false hair on the chair.
Oh little girlie, you know I love you,
But you're scattered everywhere.

In the late 1950's and early 60's, my dad sung this to me as I wandered up to bed.

I know this is an old thread, but I’d like to post the version my dad sang to me as a child. He would be 100 years old this year.

My little girl, she weighs 300 and she gains a pound each day.
My little girl, if you don’t stop gaining, you’ll soon be a mile each way.
My little girl, there’s a gate in the backyard that you can’t waddle through.
My little girl, you know I love you, but there’s oh so much of you.

My little girl, she soon gets sleepy, and she goes upstairs to bed.
She puts her false teeth on the mantle, and her wooden leg under the bed.
She puts her glass eye under the pillow, hangs her wig upon a chair.
My little girl, you know I love you, but you’re scattered everywhere.

Subject: ADD Parody: My Little Girl I Love You
From: Joe Offer

Lee Sartain emailed this one to me:

My Little Girl I Love You (Parody)

Little Girl you got sleepy.
and you went upstairs to bed
You put your glass eye on the dresser
and your peg leg under the bed.
You put your false teeth in the window.
And you false wig on a chair
Little girl you know I love you
    But you're scattered everywhere

Same tune:

It's called a tap room in Pennsylvania
    In Manhattan plush lined club
It's called a gin mill in old Chicago
And in London It's a bloomin' pub
They serve you cocktails in ritzy Newport
    And it's boilermakers in Squeedunk
But no matter where you are
When you stagger from the bar
You're just plain old-fashioned drunk.

There's a 1937 recording by Jimmie Revard and His Oklahoma Playboys here:

MY LITTLE GIRL, I LOVE YOU
(as recorded by Curly Williams (singer), orchestra by Jimmie Revard & The Oklahoma Playboys, 1937)

My Little Girl you got sleepy,
and you went upstairs to bed
You put your false hair up on the dresser
and your peg leg under the bed.
You put your glass eye up on the window.
And your swell teeth (?) on the chair
My little girl, you know I love you
But you're scattered here and there.

[Instrumental Break]

My little girl, you know I love you,
and I long for you each day
My little girl, I'm dreaming of you,
    though you're many miles away
There was a time, down in the wildwood,
Where you promised you'd be true
My little girl, you know I love you,
and I'm coming back to you.

Note: This is a parody of a song titled "My Little Girl," which was published in 1915. Words by Sam M. Lewis and Will Dillon. Music by Albert Von Tilzer.

And note that the Levy Sheet Music Collection now has recordings, at least of this song.
