Spangles were renamed and reintroduced after being revamped. They were revolting and removed from the market.

White dog poo is a thing of the past because dog owners are required by law (bye-laws in most places) to scoop the poop. There are also more public parks and such places where dogs are not allowed.

I haven't seen it for a while, but my local council had a bloke on a moped whose job it was to ride the streets, scooping up any stray dog poo (that's stray poo, not just poo from stray dogs).

These days the problem seems to be more of the two legged variety - the amount of 'disposable' nappies is growing. The other day I sat in my car at some traffic lights, watching a young woman change her baby at the roadside, carefully clean the child, making sure there was nothing icky left on it, then dump the whole load, nappy, wipes, the lot, on the pavement for others to slip on.

If you follow Nigel's clickie you'll find that this is the third thread to be started on this subject. Not one, not two, but three threads about white dog shit! Does that say something about the importance of white dog shit in the natural scheme of things? Is it a subject that is going unaddressed by our leaders while totally perplexing the minds of the unwashed masses? Is there a need for an official inquiry? Or does it merely speak volumes regarding the mental state of the typical Mudcatter?

Personally, I just wanna know what that white stuff on top of chicken shit is.

Funny...I'd been wondering the same thing not long ago. I will have to watch carefully next Spring and see if any is revealed when the snow melts. The lack of white dog shit may be due to the Earth's declining magnetic field, and is a grave portent. Doom may be just around the corner! :-)

At risk of being labelled an anorak.........the Pure Finders in Victorian London made their living collecting dog sh...   It was used in the process of tanning leather & the whiter & more limey the pooh - the higher the price the tanneries were prepared to pay. So that's where it has all gone!!!!!

I third what Metchosin said. Our dogs were given beef bones regularly, and after gnawing on those they produced the tell-tale (tell-tail!) white dog droppings. During the Christmas holidays one of our dogs used to produce some pretty bizarre colored piles, because she would munch the plastic ornaments and the silvery "icicles" that draped the christmas tree branches.

Spangles - great little sweets. I fiounbd this "whatever happenbed to" site and this what it says: "Spangles were made by Mars. They were fruit flavoured square boiled sweets - in a tube (like refreshers). They were taken off the market back in the early 1980's but they were re-introduced in the 1990's due to pupular demand. However it seems that the buying public then remembered why they had not bought Spangles in larger quantities first time around and the sweets were withdrawn again."

I think the problem was that unwrapping them meant that people didn't wolf them down fast enough. They were sensible handy sweets. And it's a charming word.

Here "spangles" were sequins that your Mum sewed on your special satin dress for the school ball. I still call sequins "spangles" during "senior moments". Ah and the white dog poo! I can recall it along with the smell of rusting iron fences and the sound of horse-drawn delivery vans. Melbourne in the 1950s. I can't believe I've got this old!

Over the last thirty year, Iv bred and reared racing greyhounds,every couple of weeks the dogs are given knuckle bones to clean their teeth.
The following morning the tell tale white shit appears.The calcium in the bones passes through the dogs very quickly.
A couple of years ago ,butchers were forbidden to sell bones due to

How long does it stay in the sun? Sunlight can turn the constituents to nitrates (e.g., potassium nitrate) and other chemicals while drying the stuff into powder. Bones and raw food may have some further effect as well. 'Tain't just one thing, it's complex.

As for the nitrates:

Saltpeter (potassium nitrate) was for many, many years extracted from, well, from shit. Cow shit, bat shit, dog shit, people shit, it didn't matter to the chemistry. Much guano was imported from Chile for fertilizer, but also to be made into saltpeter and then eventually into gunpowder. In fact, old urine ("chamber lye") was often added to boost the nitrate content. For a complete rundown on how to make your own saltpeter and gunpowder, see "Foxfire 5."

Actually, the older the shit the better.

So, when you see someone shooting a flintlock rifle or you read about the wars or hunters or fireworks or quarrying or whatever before, oh, say 1870, you can say with complete assurance, "Boy! ain't that some shit!"

And it would work, too, LtS. It was done in the US by hard-pressed frontiersmen. When I clean my blackpowder guns I use either boiling water or windshield washer fluid, so I have no personal knowledge of how WELL it works. One reason (out of several) that I haven't tried it is trying to explain to my wife what the heck I was doing.
