wilbyhillbilly,

I'm pleased that you got 'Teaser and the Firecat' rather than one of the 'Best Of' CDs that include the song. I'd meant to suggest doing that, but never got round to it.

It's a fine album, and I hope you and your wife enjoy.

All the best,

Ed

Thanks Joe,

I have a few Herb Alpert LP's, used to think he was very good in his heydays, but never knew about Lani Hall.

Incidentally, getting back to my original thread, thanks to the information I am now the proud owner of a Cat Stevens CD entitled Teaser and the Firecat, which has How can I tell you as one of the tracks.

Did'nt know what it was Sunday BM (before mudcat), ordered it Monday at Amazon, delivered Today (Tuesday).

What a system!!

Who's Lani Hall??? Well, let's just say she was well-connected, and it got her some good jobs. Here's what it says about her in the All-Music Guide:
The original voice of Sergio Mendes' Brasil '66, singer Lani Hall was also the wife of trumpeter and A&M Records co-founder Herb Alpert. Upon exiting Brasil '66, she made her solo debut in 1974 with the LP Sundown Lady; a series of releases including 1975's Hello It's Me, 1977's Sweetbird and 1979's Double or Nothing followed, but after appearing on the soundtrack to the 1983 James Bond film Never Say Never Again Hall largely disappeared from the recording scene, resurfacing only to make the occasional cameo appearance on her husband's recordings. However, the rise of Latin pop during the 1990s inspired Hall to return to the studio, and in 1998 she issued Brasil Nativo.
Actually, she did have a good voice - but it's unlikely she would have gone as far as she did without Herb Alpert. Alpert was best-known as leader of the Tijuana Brass, but he probably made more money from A&M. More information about Alpert in the All-Music guide.

I saw Cat Stevens (as he was then called) on TV last night. He was singing 'Wide World' with Peter Gabriel at the Nelson Mandela AIDS awareness concert.

WHO'S LANI HALL??

Thanks Ed, what a service, I knew I was right, missus highly impressed, although a bit shellshocked, (answered in 45 minutes)!!
AND the lyrics too, with chords thrown in as well.

Dave, you were right about the Royal, but got no chance with the rest, out came the acoustic, telly off, missus now practicing chords for the "new" song.

What can I say!!

Regards

Wilby (and Mrs Wilby)

That link Ed provided says there's a cover version by Lani Hall.
Am I the only one who is totally repulsed by that? I love the song, but Lani Hall???

And I can tell that you were just watching 'The Royal'! I should have been a detective. Are you watching 'Foyles War' now? :-)

Cheers

My missus just heard a snatch of a song on the TV that took her back to some childhood memories and wants me to move heaven and earth to try and get a copy, which is fine, if we can confirm the Title and Artiste. NO mean feat, but I told her ,no problem, I know from experience that there will be a catter out there somewhere with the answers, (such is my faith in this great family), the main lines at the beginning of the verses are,

Always thinking of you,
Always talking to you
Always walking with you

She seems to think that it could be a Cat Stevens number! any clues PLEEEEEASE!!
