Subject: RE: Lyr Req: woman pulling wild mountain thyme From: GUEST,Guest, Kevin Dolan Date: 04 Sep 21 - 12:00 AM Hey, Dave Bryant...Any idea who wrote 'Johnny and Gertrude'? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: woman pulling wild mountain thyme From: Dave Bryant Date: 19 Mar 04 - 11:10 AM What about "Whistle Daughter, Whistle" and all all the "Don't let me die an Old Maid" songs and although it's modern there's always "Johnny and Gertrude" which ends up "'cos mummy says as long as I've got one of these - I can get one of those ANYTIME!". |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: woman pulling wild mountain thyme From: Strick Date: 18 Mar 04 - 10:31 PM Well, there's Larry McMurtry's The Last Picture Show (the coach's wife) which is a good movie and a better book, but I suspose it's irreverent to offer up something that isn't a song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: woman pulling wild mountain thyme From: Fiona Date: 18 Mar 04 - 08:45 AM The only one I can think of is Alison Gross, but it's not what you would call seduction. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: woman pulling wild mountain thyme From: matai Date: 18 Mar 04 - 08:43 AM yeah, that's the trees they do grow high again... its difficult isn't it...surprising how difficult...maybe future generations will get this together. matai |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: woman pulling wild mountain thyme From: GUEST,MMario Date: 17 Mar 04 - 01:26 PM I wouldn't expect to see them because a) the "deflowering" of a male virgin was (to some extent is) a ritual of passage rather then the "ruination" of a maiden. (The old double standard that is always being ranted about) b) rather then ruining his reputation the seduction of a youth/lad/young man would enhance his reputation. c) There ARE songs I've seen about men being unable to "perform" - and *those* I would suspect are the equivilant to the "ruined maiden" songs. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: woman pulling wild mountain thyme From: Little Robyn Date: 21 Feb 04 - 05:44 PM Some Child ballads are possibilities. The Jewess' Garden or Judy Henske's version - Love Henry or Henry's in the well, who put him in? Robyn |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: woman pulling wild mountain thyme From: matai Date: 21 Feb 04 - 05:28 PM yes the 'Trees grow high...' but it was the action of the father that caused the problem wasn't it marrying her off to a boy too young and we're not told how he dies (war i suppose) interesting that the most appropriate anwer is 'No' and who says there aren't gender differences!!! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: woman pulling wild mountain thyme From: Maryrrf Date: 21 Feb 04 - 09:06 AM "Deflowering" male virgins didn't ruin their reputation, it enhanced it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: woman pulling wild mountain thyme From: The Borchester Echo Date: 21 Feb 04 - 08:30 AM The young man doesn't come off too well in 'The Trees They Do Grow High'. It all seems to have been a bit too much for him. In 'The Game Of All Fours', while the man doesn't start out exactly innocent, he certainly doesn't emerge with his reputation (for card-playing ot whatever) intact. |

Subject: Lyr Req: woman pulling wild mountain thyme From: matai Date: 21 Feb 04 - 12:01 AM Are their any versions of songs like 'Wild Mountain Thyme' from the woman's point of view? ie deflowering of male virgins or ruining their reputations? matai |
