What's all this about tar heel going? He's fun. Martin's just a useless sidekick, an Ed McMahon. Har! You are correct, Sir! Could Tar heel stay and Martin only post after he's thought of something to say? Once he thinks of something, he's all right. Can you do that with computers?

   I grew up with guns, took apart automatic pistols and put them back together with a little help from the library when I was nine. But I get along without them. A bunch of young thugs yell at me across the street, I don't yell back, but cross over to them. That's usually enough. Have been in some situations like that. But one question. When somebody gets shot, but not fatally, why does everyone say they were lucky? I say, okay, but not quite as lucky as the other people who didn't get shot.

    I think I could do personal capitol punishment when warranted, I just don't trust the government with it, and neither did the founders of this country, which is why we have a jury of twelve idiots off the street. More conservative than these latter-day pussified conservatives, who seem to want government programs to do things for them.

There are also possum on Hornby Island, B.C. They're a nuisance. The eagles like them though.

Re: Off island hunters. Its very scary during hunting season on the islands. You dress your kids in bright orange because these guys seem to shoot anything that moves (they've usually been drinking as well).
They do not respect private property and terrorize the locals with the sound of their guns breaking the silence. Its like an unseen enemy out there. They are also resented for taking game which is needed in the winter.

I sure hope the guys in camoflage don't arrive up here. They might be mistaken for an invading army.

Correction, they didn't reach as far as Spuzzum until 1965. Coyotes probably slowed them down. We don't eat possum here either, we don't get that hungry.

SRS, apparently they are Didelphis marsupialis virginiana, so they could have come from West Virginia. They were introduced to Camano Island and at Sedro Woolley, Washington about 1925 and by 1949 had spread right up the Fraser Valley in BC to Spuzzum. I'm not sure of their current status in the interior now. Nobody thought they were on Vancouver Island until a few years ago, when some showed up around Sidney.

Metchosin, I've been away from Washington for too long. Where are the possums around the Northwest coast from originally? I've forgotten.

A friend of mine down at Lake Whatcom used to have them occasionally dig through her compost or burning piles out in the yard. One winter was so bad she took pity and fed them a little, but it was an odd situation where they were waiting for her but would hiss as she approached.

Those birds are pretty tame then, eh? Camouflage golf bags? I'm confused, I thought camouflage wasn't a fashion statement.

Up here when you're hunting in the bush, for moose and deer camouflage is dangerous and a silly waste of money. Better to wear something brightly brightly coloured eh, never can tell when some city guy in camouflage will get nervous or trigger happy and shoot at anything that moves.

Maybe they should be jumpy, some guys in camouflage even rub themselves with deer scent. Makes the bears, wolves and cougars curious.

Oh, I see, down there you have open season on ducks and geese all year round. Lot of ducks and geese on that archery hunting range, eh? Up here we have lots of Americans who wear camouflage too, but we only have a short open season for ducks and geese. Heard one fellow say the Americans in camouflage here pay a $1,000 a pound for their birds.

Metchosin, just got back to the PC. In answer your question about the hunting attire, in low income areas like West Virginia, it is worn all the time. In fact a RealTree camo sweatshirt is kind of like a Nike sneaker in the city. And in reality it is not a fashion statement. If you've got the money for a new winter outfit, you want to be able to wear it on the job and to help put meat on the table.

BTW a good friend of mine who is a famous Hammered Dulcimer builder just smoked two bambis with one shot from a .58 black powder rifle. They have been eating his wife's herb garden, and he regards them as Rats with Horns. In any case, he was only aiming at one from the window in his workshop. When 8 legs went through the air he thought he had poured too much powder and blew the deer up. Nope! Got the first through the neck and the second in the shoulder. The first was clean meat, but the .58 reduced the second to stew meat (some of which I picked up today).

And I'm glad you recognized the meat comment as tongue in cheek. The only place they currently do that is in Germany...

If we suspend disbelief and accept the philosophical vignette presented for purpose of debate then, yes, the moral agenda was set by the wielder of the knife. I suppose we need threads/posts/comments now & then to remind us that ignorance, superstition, prejudice, bigotry and hate are alive and well out there...in larger numbers than we like to admit.

Some people simply cannot distinguish between 'patriotism' and narrow, provincial disdain for anyone who is not like themselves. And when this position is supported and fueled by religious fervor with a sanctimonious attitude, we get a formula for conflict and suspicion that hurts EVERYONE....

tar_heel says he just posts here to " get my kicks from seeing how upset i got some of you" ...he says little about the details of what 'exactly' upset HIM...I suspect he can't enunciate it, but can only rail against terms that he sees as some sort of threat to his set-in-concrete narrow views.

Claymore, I reread your post again because you said I got it wrong eh, now something else puzzles me about your culture. Why do your bow hunters wear hunting attire when they are target practising with plastic deer? The plastic deer can't see or smell them.

You must have a lot of real game on your archery hunting ranges. Sometimes the big horn sheep here will wander into parking lots too. They like to lick the salt from under the cars..........or maybe your bow hunters are hiding from other bow hunters that shoot plastic deer too? tar_heel said it was dangerous down there.

I wouldn't be too sure that having a gun on you at the time of an assault, would guarantee that you would emerge the victor from the scenario that you pose, tar_heel.
Unless you have vast experience in dealing with this sort of thing, I think you would find that the reality of the situation would bring on another set of criteria that you would have to take into account; i.e. getting to your weapon in time, and the risk of being disarmed yourself.
And that can really turn your day around, too!

Having said that, 'liberals' have a survival instinct no different from yourself, and if I thought that mine, or my family's life was in danger, I would have no difficulty reconciling this to myself in the short space of time it took me to splatter the guy's picture on every available nearby wall.
Wouldn't give it a second thought, actually.

I think the difference between 'liberals' and your brand of 'conservatism' is that we don't go around shouting about it all the time

Claymore, I guess the south has a bit more in common with the Canadian North than I realized, because we have some very good young bow hunters up here too and it gets very cold here as well..........then again maybe not that much in common....... I don't think many bow hunters here would put an arrow in another kid because he laughed. Learning more about you keep those "kids" in line all the time.

Tarheels post would be funny if we didn't already know his prevalent point of view. This wasn't meant to amuse us it was intended solely as an insult.

The funny thing is that I was raised around guns, am comfortable with guns, trained with guns, and own guns. Yet in every place I have lived, and some were regarded as the murder capitals of the U.s. I have not only not had to defend myself or family. But all of my co-workers and friends haven't had to either. I wonder how many of the people who claim that the liberals are out to get their guns have ever had to use one to defend themselves.

Matter of fact the only two times in my life that somebody I know has had a gun drawn on them was when they were actually carrying their own weapons (and not concealed either) as part of their duty. It doesn't seem to me that their presence made the individuals involved think one second about not reaching for their own weapon.

It was a joke people, for God sakes. Any one would know that after three rounds in the body cavity, much less 6, 12, or the actual 18 fired ("Always count your rounds"), no kid would know whether it was a good group or not; the father was just shooting 'till the quivering stopped.

But it does point up an aspect of Southerners that is not often remarked upon.

Last fall I was taking a bunch of my Job Corps students (who come from "Philly", "DC" and "B-more") to pick up some ponchos at a local sporting goods store here in West Virginia. And they were hooting and hollering as we drove up in the van, with the hip-hop/rap blaring out of the radio as I pulled up. As they got out of the van, there was an archery hunting range set up a short distance from the parking lot and a man and his son, both dressed in hunting attire, were taking turns shooting at a plastic deer target some 40 yards away.

My kids were making loud comments about "Robbing Hood" and "Gangstas" as we moved toward the store. We stopped and watched as the father silently put an arrow through the heart of the target, then my students went dead silent as the boy, perhaps 12, put his arrow a couple of inches away from his fathers. This went on for several rounds, with nary a miss.

I turned to my kids and said, "Laugh if you want to, but if that boy ever comes for you, your closest friend will only heard the fart when you die".

My kids thought it over for a minute, then one of them said "Man, it's cold out here", and we went into the store...

tarheel, what pisses off folks like you is that you can't use gun issues, and such to split average folks anymore. You had the world tied up in a bunch of neat little labels, but all of a sudden it isn't working that way. So in frustration you start ridiculous threads. Boy! I'm so sorry that things have deteriorated so badly in your part of the world that you have to worry about such scenarios tar_heel. Sound as if it is almost as dangerous as in parts of the middle east.

Are there any parts of your country where an unarmed tourist might come and visit and feel safe or should one buy a gun or travel with an armed guard when one crosses the border?
