From: Thomas the Rhymer

I confess... I've been a little down. I've been in love with Martha Stewart for over a decade, and lately, she's been getting smeared and all that... But today she's been cleared of the major crime... and I'll be able to see her smile again. My world is back in color, and Martha my love is free to be industrious and creative (and very beautiful) with experience based abandon!

Hooraaaaay!

Martha floats my boat every time...

TTR, thanks for posting this. I hadn't heard. I admire her in some ways and sometimes enjoy her show. I KNOW she knows good pottery 'cause she's always showing off Guy Wolff's stuff! I think it would have been a travesty if she'd gone to jail over this alleged crime when the Enron idjits who cost so many their life savings are still free.

Graciously put Ladyjean...

She's cute, she's got great taste, she's got class, she's creative, she's industrious, she's got great communication skills, she knows how to save money in style, and she makes better stuff in her spare time (not much of it I'm sure) than seems possible... Really puts the newbee plastic stuff to shame... Oh! and did I mention that smile? Scrumptious! Does anyone know if she is single? ;^)

Could there be a more perfect woman in this world?

Lots of good ideas come from Ms. Stewart. I can't take a steady diet of the program, but she has some good stuff. Last summer I printed off her stain removal chart and put it in a plastic frame in my laundry room--it's very helpful.

To be accused of a crime, then when you protest your innocence, to be accused of tampering with your stock prices because you spoke up in public is just too much. This is a judiciary out of control. Good thing the judge figured that out.

She can be rude to those she deals with, including employees and other business contacts. She also has little patience with those who violate her privacy. However, that's not really enough to put her behind bars.

However, the jury's still out on her taking advantage of "insider stock tips," "covering up her communications with her broker," and "lying to investigators."

I'm sure Martha of all people knows that it would have been cheaper to have paid the fine. Perhaps she's standing on a principle here--innocence--that many in the media aren't willing to acknowledge?

It would sure tick me off if I was innocent of "x" crime to be told that it would be more expedient to accept a guilty plea and a fine than to protest my innocence and perhaps be hung by circumstancial evidence.

I don't love her (have only watched her a couple of times). Inside trading? Maybe. How much money are we talking about? Not much compared to what others have done (Enron, etc.). She's being scapegoated because she's successful, tough and an easy mark. She is to big business what pot is to heroin. Why all the fuss?

Brini Maxwell is to Martha Stewart as Boy George is to Blondie.

I don't think I've seen more than five minutes of her show... But I've seen her all over the media, and through the encouragement and empowerment she has given to others...

Making stuff from scratch is way more engaging and fun than shopping and wearing out shoddy stuff...

I think the basic conflict she brings up in people runs deep. On one hand, she stands for the self reliance that made this country great... the enterprinurial spirit, and "...the tough get going". On the other hand, if all the women of this country decided to approach their lives in the way she does, our consumer economy would probably undergo a major paradigm shift...

Shopping is what corporate America is all about, women are the predominant shoppers, and the more "finnished goods, the better... But our quality of life is better when we are engaged in our creative process, especially when we can make a positive difference in our world... It's empowerment. You can by the taste, but the real thing can't be sold...

Thanks Martha...

Thomas, following Martha's directions on projects or buying her sheets and towels and kitchen gadgets isn't really a way to save money. Some of her stuff is pricey. What I find is that she has basic good quality stuff at a fair price. For example, look at the kitchen things--often she has bowls or utensils I've been looking for that turn up in her section of K-Mart (if you're lucky enough to still have one in your neck of the woods). They frequently resemble the very same thing I remember from many years ago at my Mom's house. AHA! That's it! She's just duplicating our mother's cabinets and cupboards! 1940s and 50s retro!

SRS, I can't stand her stuff at Kmart just because it has limited the choices so much. Kmart dropped any other competition to carry her bedding and kitchen linens, so I find the variety very limited. I still admire her, though.

On the subject of retro towels, etc. any of you know where I can find towels which are made of material printed with floral patterns, throughout? I can't find any to save my soul. I have one which was cheap 20 years ago and still is good enough for drying my hair. I think it came from a Kmart. I've found fancy ones, imported one, cheap ones, etc. but none have floral material; maybe floral borders or appliques, but not printed patterns! Not even on google! And, remember the striped ones which came in laundry detergent boxes?

*sigh*...kat

Wednesday - shopping, etc. Do you remember these? What was the order of responsibility? They were very cute. They were from her hope chest.

The begrudgery driving the attacks on Martha Stewart are largely sexist, IMO. Americans don't begrudge men their financial success, only women.

The sexist backlash against Martha Stewart has been breathtakingly bizarre. Books have been written and movies made about her being ambitious and not a "properly feminine" nurturing personality.

Now, if you've ever run a business, you know it takes a great deal of ambition and blind faith in one's self to be successful against the odds, and that is just as true of a business which provides modest earnings as it is for a business which earns millions, so the accusation that Martha is ambitious is, in this day and age, simply bizarre.

The thing about her being a bitch/non-nurturing, well...the ball buster/bitch stereotype of businesswomen who have become multi-millionaires with high media profiles is the gold standard, isn't it?

In the US, while women are more visible in business than anywhere else in the world, these sexist stereotypes still exist, and as Martha Stewart has seen, they can be extremely nasty. It isn't that the mass media/conventional society wants to take her down a few pegs in terms of her status. No, that isn't good enough for a woman who independently established a highly successful and visible business empire. When Americans see a woman independently creating and sustaining her own business empire, they want to see her destroyed. Permanently. Utterly destroyed so she cannot possibly rise from the ashes and do it again. Women WILL NOT BE TOLERATED in our society as emperors of successful business empires.

What Martha Stewart is, as quite a few others in this day and age are, is a marketing genius. She saw that the middle class housewife (working or at-home) who had once been the target market for advertisers and lifestyle purveyors, were being ignored in favor of the Cosmo girl. So she saw a void and filled it, and made a lot of people, including herself, very wealthy as a result of it.

That is supposed to be the American dream. But we all know the American dream isn't one that women are supposed to realize, right?

I'm glad the judge established the line for the prosecution of this sort of case. With the dismissal of this charge, I'm guessing the prosecution's case will likely fall apart. The case never should have been brought to begin with, and when we compare this case to the truly serious and egregious securities fraud, accounting fraud, etc. that is going on all over the place in the US, this prosecution really does stink to high heaven.

The men at General Mills made billions hawking the Betty Crocker line to housewives. At least Martha Stewart is a real person, with a genuine interest in what she is selling to women, as opposed to men creating a fake image of a housewife, and exploiting it for themselves and their corporate interests.

The slandering of Martha was just another WMDistraction... while the "low spark of high heeled boys" uses 'terrorism' as their takover smokescreen...

I am not focusing here on Martha's products... She has been a symbol, and she's been made into an example. Ambitious women are being slandered... in favor of the 50's 'barefoot and pregnant' Mayberry.

My point? Smearing Martha was another example of terrorism American style... and the current administration is, on some level... involved, imho.

SRS guessed right. The National Education Association. The largest teachers union in the US. We were referred to as a terrorist organization by Bush's illustrious Secretary of Education Rod Paige last week when he was addressing the National Governors Association at the White House, no less.

Paige, who is African American, a former football coach, and teachers college dean, has never concealed his disdain for the NEA's opposition to Bush's "No Child Left Behind" bill. He has compared opponents of Bush's education law to segregationist Southerners who stood in schoolhouse doors to prevent black students from attending desegregated schools.

The union president, Reg Weaver, responded:

""It is morally repugnant to equate those who teach America's children with terrorists," Weaver said. "Yet this is the kind of rhetoric we have come to expect from this administration whenever one challenges its world view."

Paige said his statement was just a joke, of course. Bush backed him up 1000%.

Ah, apparently it hasn't occurred to those who love to bash Martha, that the woman isn't guilty of insider trading, because in the US legal system, a defendant is presumed innocent, while the State bears the burden of proof of guilt.

In this case, the State not only did not prove guilt on the insider trading charge, the charge itself was dismissed by the judge due to lack of any proof whatsoever, prior to the case going to the jury.

I'm not certain what conclusion to draw regarding the male contributors to this thread who are so contemptuous of Martha Stewart that it makes them write condescendingly in a phony 'folksy' pidgin English to make their snide remarks about Martha Stewart. One need not like Martha Stewart or her products, to understand that this has been a biased, bogus prosecution along the lines of the Monica Lewinsky type of thing.

I mean c'mon, Martha's stock deal doesn't come close to rising to the level of the Queen of Mean's "only the little people pay taxes" fraud and tax evasion. As someone else in the thread has pointed out, compared to the debacles in the securities and accounting firms, or the Enrons, this case is more akin to stealing pens from your employer.

I have one of her ironing boards--it is a really superior design. Someone actually stopped to think about where is a safe place for you to put the hot iron when you're moving the garments around. :)

Now, I have to admit, I scoffed at her attempt to make and package trail mix--the recipe was fine, but she put it in little brown craft paper bags and tied each of them up with a little strip of raffia. [snort!] Unlike this shank's mare fashion statement, as an experienced hiker or climber you mix the stuff then put it in the toughest zip lock bag you can find so 1) it doesn't break and end up throughout the inside of your backpack and 2) so it doesn't get wet if you happen to get rained on or have a leaky water bottle. You can also use the bag for any number of things--for getting water, for putting something else in once you've finished the mix, for bringing home blueberries or other trailside delicacies you discover along the way. Or to slide your paperback book into if you don't have it in a bag already and it looks like rain.

Thomas, when you grow up in the Northwestern part of Washington State you learn early on that life goes on even if it is raining. Most often up there it is drizzling, and there's little cause to get in out of it.

Guest, I think you misunderstood Bee-dubya-ell's antics--he appeared from here to be hamming it up.

The program where Martha had the trail mix included a little hike to a high spot in Acadia National Park with a park ranger.
