Johnny, I wouldn't be listening to McG of H's advice on this one. Usually, he's on the money, but this time . . . . Some darn Canadian will think even the "Musical things to blow" pertains to him. His reasoning will go, "I'm musical, I have things, must mean me!" I would never think that way, but certain unmentionable guys from Ontario would.

You might consider calling it "Things to blow" - up the musical end of the page you'd probably not get too many of the kind of unseemly responses to that you might perhaps get down this end. Still, it might be better to say "Musical things to blow"..

about William Shatner, who DESERVES a another special thread
all about him. Is there a WS website?

Rapaire, I am gonna start a thread called
Folksong, folkdance, folkmusic .. to discuss the
trumpet and other melody instruments eg. flute, clarinet,
trombone etc.

Bruce - you don't need to be logged in. the help button is on the top right of the page. the "help" in the banner across the top. It leads to the help forum.

that's an odd problem - I can't think of anything that should cause it.

kat,

I should be apologizing to you. I was miffed a bit, but that happens. I enjoy your writing, and you are one of the people who write on the 'cat whose thread comments I invariably read rather than scan. Besides, when I thought about what you wrote, I recognized that people like you have made much more of a contribution to the 'cat than I have, so I should have thought before I opened my mouth.

I think that when a site like the 'cat gets too few #####s (I am a 'fan' of his writing; his humour is excellent and he is very intelligent) or too many Gargoyles, it diminishes in quality. Had I considered that in light of your post, I would have agreed.

Thank you, kat, for writing. It means a great deal to me, and please forgive my pout. I can be a real ass at times, and this has been one of them. I tried to send this by message about five times and the f##kin' thing will not go.

Can't even reset my bloody cookie. So, I will be asking if I can completely get out of the 'cat as brucie and rejoin as Murdoch. I don't know what the hell the problem is, but it's been a a pain in the ass for three weeks now, and I am fed up.

What I don't like about Mudcat?

Flaming Trolls!
No matter how you cook them they still come out inedible.

Recipe:
1 Troll (preferably dead)
30' strong rope
1 long plank
Salt and Pepper as preferred

Tie troll to plank with rope.
Insert plank with tied on troll into hot coals for about 30 minutes per pound of troll. At finish cut troll from plank, throw away troll and eat plank.

I know I'm a self-confessed smart ass. I try not to offend and ya'll have been pretty good at responding to me. Sometimes I have something useful to add and sometimes I may throw in something that resembles humor (from 300', in the dark, on a foggy night). Despite 1st ammendment rights I don't always post to threads that might bring me trouble (active duty military).

Glad to see that someone enjoyed Chongo. The last story had less humor than the first because of the subject matter. The author that started the story had some problems and was unable to contribute in the normal manner. The funny thing is that I don't read the genre myself, its a wonder that I can contribute at all. I know that Chongo is typing away the next story of his adventures. I was also thinking that Kerchak might want to brag about his war exploits as well. And yes, Liberty Meadows is a great strip (thanks LH).

Trumpets in folk? Not in your normal session maybe very often, but there've been some people who've used trumpet very effectively with Engoish folk music - nitab ly Brass Monkey.

And trad Jazz is folk anyway; and how about Mariachi music?

Hey, I play trumpet! T-R-U-M-P-E-T, trumpet. Ever think of the trumpet as a folk instrument? Jazz, yeah. Blues, even. But folk? Nobody plays folk trumpet (except me, which means I play folk songs on the trumpet).

When people start talking about instruments, they ignore me! And yet, and yet...you never heard about the Last Guitar, or the Last Banjo, or the Last Bagpipe, or the Last Button Box, or even the Last Bodhran. It's the Last Trumpet, or the Last Trump.

Us trumpteters are gonna have the Last Word, and you fancy-schmancy dobro and ukelele players better realize it and be nice to us! (Send money and/or fine whisky.)

Yeah, probably a guy thing about Chongo. Chongo is a send-up of a kind of fiction that was written mostly (I think) for male readers...that being the private eye stories of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and other authors in that genre. I came across a site that had ALL the old gangster slang on it and got inspired. Slugs, roscoes, dames, gats, pins, gumshoes! It went on and on.

I enjoy taking a super-masculine, exaggerated world like that and plunking a bunch of apes and monkeys down in the middle of it. It really adds color, don't you think?

I was also inspired by Liberty Meadows, the comic strip, which features chimps and apes frequently for the purposes of bizarre humour and satire.

I figured it would help to work in some good romance stuff, so I tried to do that.

But let's face it, gangsters in pinstripe suits aren't for everybody. :-)

Chongo is a real, living character to me by now.

reading mudcat is like reading the paper - sometimes its just compelling - other days its just okayish.

hmmmm......

one time i felt uncomfortable here was when i was chatting with someone in a thread, and was reprimanded by another (quite chatty) catter & told to take it into pms. couldn't work out the logic, and the other person just dropped right out of mudcat after that.

i have learnt to just ignore some people's posts (only one or two )who seem to be relentlessly on the attack.

yes, Sgt Kat and her mudcat commandos were hilaaaarious, but chongo didn't hook me in. must be a girly thing!

HeyaEllenpoly! Welcome to the Mudcat!! Glad you are still "howling" with us. :-) I have seen your postings; haven't been posting much myself, so if I slighted you in anyway, please know it was not intentional.

Kevin, I know. I well remember when older oldsters lamented, but that was mostly about the music threads, which I well understand. I am talking about the BS section, before it was a separate section, mostly. Without the creative talents of Spaw, Lonesome EJ, JenEllen, PeterT, Sourdough, and many others (who was it who always strode into the tavern in a long black duster?), the title "BS" has become self-fulfilling, imo. I blame myself for some of the political comments ad nauseum, having started the first Bushwhacked thread.:-)

No offence to you, LH, but I just couldn't get into the Chongo stories. Partly because of what was going on in my life, busy and distracted as all get out, but also because I enjoy stories more when there are many voices of others, who keep a good line of continuity going despite the diversity. This in no way reflects on your stories and abilities, nor those of anyone else who might have posted to them.

All we can do is look to today and watch out for tomorrow, so I won't linger on it, but I have been feeling this for some time, as I know others have with whom I've spoken and it finally felt right to say so, publicly. Perhaps there will be a reunion story thread sometime where we might all wax eloquently once more.:-)

Thanks for listening. To anyone interested, I would urge you to take a look at some of the Mudcat Classic Threads listed in the Permathread at the top of the thread titles. There was something majick in those days.

Being a newbie, it's always a little distressing to hear how much better it was in the good old days...but I also recognize that such days do occur, and for that, I'm grateful that mudcat keeps threads that go way back. freda underhill suggested the one about Sgt Cat and Her Howling Mudcat Commandos, and I'm still Howling along with them.
I have noticed one thing, though, and that's that I'd far rather be answered than ignored in a thread. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a club of friends who really like to discuss and argue and no matter what I might offer, I'm just not gonna be acknowledged. So be it...I have a thick enough skin. I learned that from William Shatner when he was actually rebuffed by one of the many lovelies who usually sink willingly into his manly arms and give themselves up to the soaring lust that....oops where was I?

It comes and it goes, kat. And I'm pretty sure that when you check back on any time that counts, rightly enough, as "the good old days", you'll find someone round about then lamenting some other "good old days".

The sheer number of people and number of threads can get in the way, so that right mixture to produce some kinds of creative threads doesn't come together. And when it does, it's easy enough to miss seeing it happening, (For example for some reason I missed the Chongo thread.)

But I'm sure we'll find our way round that. One of them being to bring stuff like that to people's attention in threads like this, the way Amos did just now - and I'll off to catch up on it before too long (BS: My Banana Is Quick: A Chongo Chimp Tale )

I really miss the really creative BS we used to have with the story threads, tavern threads, things like the Hokey-Pokey thread and the Druids, etc. This is mostly due, imo, to the loss of participation of some stellar Mudcatters who just can't be here as much or choose not to try anymore. I think the sheer numbers of members have dissipated the really good creativity.

Well, I've carefully read all of the above posts, even the redundant ones, and the main thing I'd like to reinforce is I think it would be nicer if people actually addressed something that someone posted above more often. Makes it more like a conversation rather than random observations. Those who post a new thread should also do more to try to manage the discourse, and maybe they should think twice about posting if they're not interested in doing that. I do get irritated with people who post a thread and then seem to abandon it.

Most of the time I have fun posting to Mudcat, and sometimes the result is much more creative than I could achieve on my own.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I must agree with Johnny that I've been put off by the sarcasm and mean spiritedness that sometimes comes out in Mudcat, and often find myself starting to post but wondering if I'd say something accidentally that would set somebody off and then just figuring "Why bother?". I've become something of a lurker. And I've seen some newcomers who probably posted once and will never post again after the remarks they were subjected to.

Humor doesn't come through as well in an e-mail or a posting as it does in person. Not too long ago I sent out an e-mail to the people on my mailing list to update them on my performance schedule, and made some flippant remarks about Valentine's day. It really upset one person and it took a while before he understood (after an exchange of e-mails, that I was JOKING). Eye contact and a smile make a big difference in how a remark is perceived.

That said, I still go on Mudcat every day and could safely say I learn something from it every day, so this isn't a condemnation.

But it would be nicer we could all make an effort to be polite, and think before we post.

Okay, so I'm not the only one here who thinks it's a bit Brit-centric? Whew. 95% of the time that doesn't bother me but occasionally--**occasionally**--I do find it frustrating because I feel like it's harder to get serious, helpful responses about non-British music. I'm still here because this is the nearest thing I've found to my "ideal music forum" but sometimes I feel like I have to choose between all-British music and the likes of Tarheel of recent notoriety.
