Subject: RE: BS: two types of people in the world From: freda underhill Date: 30 Mar 04 - 06:00 PM there are two types of people. those who can apologise, and those who can't. and those two types also fall into another category, in roughly the same way: there are two types of people. those who can forgive, and those who can't. that McLandress Dimension is interesting, reminds me of poetry readings. sometimes someone gets up and their poem is all "I" - i see, i felt, i did... and in a sense it can mean they haven't seen or felt anything other than themselves. |
Subject: RE: BS: two types of people in the world From: GUEST,Larry K Date: 30 Mar 04 - 04:39 PM There are three kinds of people. Those that are good at math. And those that are not. And remember, 4 out of every 3 people are bad at fractions. |

Subject: RE: BS: two types of people in the world From: Bill D Date: 30 Mar 04 - 03:12 PM yer welcome! I just happened to have read an article in Esquire many years ago and remembered the name. It is obviously not an 'exact' measurement, but it sure does provide an 'interesting' way to focus on some of our fellow human's behavior... |
Subject: RE: BS: two types of people in the world From: SueB Date: 30 Mar 04 - 03:04 PM Bill D, you are aware that the "McLandress Coefficient" is a fiction, yes? The book, The McLandress Dimension, was written by John Kenneth Galbraith, using a pseudonym. Here's a passage from Galbraith's A Life In Our Times: "...in 1962, while recovering from hepatitis at my friend Ruth Field's house on Long Island, I invented a 'psychometricist' by the name of Herschel McLandress who had come up with this measure - "the McLandress Dimension." This and his other scientific efforts of the same nature became a book by that title which I published, with a satisfactory response, under the pseudonym of Mark Epernay, the Mark from Mark Twain, Epernay from an old wine crate in the stable where I was working." Which isn't to say it's not a legitimate way to classify people, by their level or degree of self-absorption, but it would be funny if some one were to get the impression from reading your post that this is a factual rather than a fictional measurement. |

Subject: RE: BS: two types of people in the world From: SueB Date: 30 Mar 04 - 12:22 PM Perhaps I should have said, People who are (or perceive themselves to be) lucky & People who are (or perceive themselves to be) unlucky. Perception aside, there is also the factor of random chance. Bad shit does happen, sometimes arbitrarily. Good shit, too. There is such a thing as an innocent bystander. I'm a firm believer in luck. Then again, I've been extraordinarily lucky. |
Subject: RE: BS: two types of people in the world From: Bill D Date: 30 Mar 04 - 12:06 PM actually, people come on a sliding scale...exemplified by "The McLandress Coefficient" (copied & pasted from a couple of sources) Herschel McLandress was a professor of psychiatric measurement at Harvard Medical School, and he developed a way to measure a person's degree of self- absorption. In spoken and written material he measured the use of "I," "me," and "my" and the "Coefficient" was the longest span of time a person can remain diverted from himself. "... the arithmetic mean or average of the intervals of time during which a subject's thoughts remain centered on some substantive phenomenon other than his own personality." Eleanor Roosevelt was supposed to have a McLandress coefficient of two hours; John F. Kennedy's was twenty-nine minutes, and Elizabeth Taylor's was three minutes. Richard Nixon was 3 seconds. So......if you want to divide people into two types, you can collapse this to refer to those whose McLandress coefficient impresses you, and "others"...like R. Nixon. (I met Alan Ginsberg once, and he impressed me as able to focus on others as long as anyone I have ever met.) ....and our own Rick Fielding could do similar things! |
