Subject: RE: Magic Moments From: George Papavgeris Date: 20 May 04 - 08:23 AM I fair pissed myself when my son uttered his first: "Dah". I thought I'd almost cracked it. Until we realised, not long after, that he meant "that". |

Subject: RE: Magic Moments From: GUEST,MMario Date: 20 May 04 - 08:26 AM most kids I know first word has been "NO!" - rapidly becomes a non-magic moment. *grin* My nieces first phrase was "Get Down!" - which she used to mean "I'm going to climb up on the couch and throw myself off into the middle of the living room!" |

Subject: RE: Magic Moments From: Dave Bryant Date: 20 May 04 - 11:22 AM When I ran a baby storytime one child, after a few sessions, left in her stroller saying "book! book!" Then you found that her mother was a Parking Warden and you'd left your car on a yellow line ! |

Subject: RE: Magic Moments From: Stilly River Sage Date: 20 May 04 - 11:51 AM My daughter's first word was the usual "Da" for Dad. (It's easier to say than "Mama"). My son's first word was "Otto"--the name of our goofy white cat. [sigh] He still really loves the cats. My daughter's first letter was "B" when she cracked the code at 18 months old watching Sesame Street. My son was a little slower at that, probabably around 2 years. What's interesting is that they understand a lot of things before they can articulate it. Never forget that and always talk and read to even the smallest of babies. SRS |

Subject: RE: Magic Moments From: Liz the Squeak Date: 20 May 04 - 07:48 PM I'm sorry to say that the Limpits' first coherent and contextual statement was 'oh bowucks' as she fell from a chair. I taught her 'infanticide' a while ago..... with demonstrations. LTS |

Subject: RE: Magic Moments From: GUEST,John O'Lennaine Date: 20 May 04 - 08:08 PM My little bloke Tom's first word was "Dad". He had said it once, but wouldn't say it again no matter how I coaxed him, so I gave up and went outside. As soon as the door closed I heard "Dad dad dad dad dad dad..." He has since become more eloquent but his spirit of co-operation hasn't changed. John |

Subject: RE: Magic Moments From: YorkshireYankee Date: 20 May 04 - 09:00 PM My husband's little sister's first word was "Hub" -- which apparently was her word for him (his name is Iain, so go figure...) 2nd word was "Mama". 3rd word was "gogok" (meaning chocolate). 4th word was "Dada"... priorities, dontchano! I knew a kid like your neice, MMario -- not her first words, cos she must have been 5 or 6 but anyway, I was babysitting; she wanted to "play catch". She showed me where to stand (a few feet from the rungs to climb up something), climbed up the rungs while I looked on, bemused, then suddenly launched herself in my general direction! I was lucky to catch her... |

Subject: RE: Magic Moments From: Bill D Date: 20 May 04 - 10:39 PM I tried and tried to get my son to make "prestidigitation" his first word, but he didn't see the point. What he DID say one day told us something about how young kids think. He was breast-fed intermittantly until he was past two and doing reasonably well at talking. He learned to say "nuss!" (nurse) when he wanted Mommies attention. So...one day he happened to be playing with and old copy of Playboy magazine, and, happening on Miss February, he pointed at the appropriate place and said brightly, "NUSS!"....ah! It's NOUN, not a verb. |

Subject: RE: Magic Moments From: Stilly River Sage Date: 20 May 04 - 11:02 PM Bill, we had the same experience here! My oldest was weaned at about 2 1/2. One day she pointed at the Playboy and announced "milk!" She reached a point when she would ask for milk, but stop (usually right after the let down) because what she really wanted was a hug. So we talked about it and decided it was better if she asked for a hug if that was what she really wanted. You should have seen her face when she was about two and we were in the grocery store dairy section. She asked what all of the white cartons were. I told her "that's milk." She looked straight at my chest, then back at the cooler section and was totally flummoxed. I had quite a good chuckle and went on to tell her how some of the rest of the world approaches the question of "milk." It was pretty easy to tell when she was ready to stop nursing. As a newborn she took so long that I always had a book to read. One day, at about 2 1/2, she climbed into my lap, started nursing, and opened a picture book to flip through at the same time. It was sad and funny, and pretty soon I started having her father read to her at bedtime. His lap didn't come with a milk bar. SRS |

Subject: RE: Magic Moments From: Rapparee Date: 20 May 04 - 11:30 PM My niece was about 6 when we went camping with her family. One hot night, when the kids were roasting marshmallows and the adults were talking, I asked her to please get me a refill of iced tea. She came back with the ice tea and two chocolate chip cookies, which were just what I also wanted. I thanked her, and she replied, "That's okay, Uncle Mike, that's what friends are for." |

Subject: RE: Magic Moments From: dianavan Date: 21 May 04 - 01:26 AM My daughters first word was "yo-yo". This of course meant she wanted the additional soy sauce. My son's first was "Ma". He still calls me that and it makes me feel like an old lady. Wait a minute - I am an old lady! |

Subject: RE: Magic Moments From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 21 May 04 - 02:16 AM Whenever we'd ask son Chris, "Does the Clark Street bus run here all night??"----He would say, "DOO DA, DOO DA !!" Those were his first words. Really. Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: Magic Moments From: Flash Company Date: 21 May 04 - 05:59 AM I have no children, and really I should keep out of this, But a few years ago an old flame, who married someone else, asked me to photograph her new daughter. Towards the end of the session, the little giirl, who was fascinated by the cameras & flashguns pointed at me and triumphantly said 'DAD'. I ran for my life! FC |

Subject: RE: Magic Moments From: GUEST,John O'Lennaine Date: 21 May 04 - 09:00 AM Daughter Mary at about 3 yrs old had a bit of a cough or sniffle or something. I had a nasty cold at the time and said "I hope you're not catching my cold." She looked askance at me and said in her most condescending voice "No Dad, I'm catching my own cold." John |
