You haven't 'saved' anything. You've consumed.

Hey, I went shopping last night! Deliberately and with forethought I went to Wallywart and even bought something! And I saved lots of money, too.

Really.

I've wanted one of those locking steel cabinets that you can keep guns in, not so much for the guns I have (no kids and none come visiting and I use gun locks, etc.) but because they'd be a more secure place to lock up stuff. I'd seen one at Wartmart for about USD 150 which would fill the bill and now that I had a vehicle I could move it in, off I went.

So they only had the floor demo and it was dented. The dent didn't affect the ddor closing or really anything at all, so I made a deal with the manager to buy it for 10% off.

It rang up at USD 49.97. Twice. The manager came, cleared the register, and rang it up. At USD 49.97. He shrugged, I bought it.

For a hundred bucks under the list, or about 2/3 off. I got a cabinet to lock stuff up in (like cameras) and the Mall Wart took a bath on the deal.

I felt doubly good and gloated until I went to sleep. The manager was unhappy and didn't honor his 10% off offer; he muttered something like, "Take it or leave it."

Awwwwwwwwwwwww....

WalMart made 9 BILLION dollars off us us last year. "They don't do it for the money, though; they do it to ruin our towns!" Jon Stewart said, when reporting a class action lawsuit by 1.some million women whom WalMart pays less than their male counterparts. We are all guilty.:-)

I believe the lawsuit has only been brought by two or three employees. The class action part makes it include everyone, whether they agree with it or not. And don't people get an choice to opt out of a class action suit? If so, the suit may end up including a lot less people.

I have a female friend who's worked for Wal-Mart for years. She's there by choice. If she didn't like it, or thought she was treated unfairly, trust me - she'd go somewhere else in a heartbeat. The job fits her lifestyle and pays for the fun things she likes to do.

That's not to say that some people haven't been treated badly. In a company that large, there's going to be some asshole managers somewhere - but that doesn't necessarily mean it's company policy.

When a suit becomes a class action, the lawyers and judge have to agree on a definition of who is in the class and who is not. Then, they contact all class members and inform them about the suit and give them the chance to opt out. One reason they may want out is that staying in the class prevents you from taking action on your own.

If the suit is won or settled, the lawyers take about half of the money and the rest is split up among the class members according to some agreed on formula. After many years of process, each woman in the class will get a check for about $1.47 the signing of which will release the company from any further liability in this case.

Rapaire, what you have described isn't shopping, per se. I'd call it "buying," maybe. Shopping, on the other hand, involves visiting six or more stores with the vague intention of "looking for a new pair of shoes," spending several (no doubt enjoyable) hours in the process, and coming home with a package of sewing maching needles. Too many people know where I live, so I won't go on to say that this is an endeavor most often indulged in by the fairer sex.

very old Dagwood & Blondie cartoon strip:

Blondie comes home from 'shopping' at Tudbury's, explaining that they had a sale...in the last panel, Dagwood is looking at the sheaf of bills, saying "I don't think we can afford to save that much money.."

I shop for bargains all the time...that is, sales on stuff we use anyway. I have VERY seldom paid full price on paper goods and peanut butter in recent years. Then there is stuff I buy ONLY when it is on sale...shoes, boneless chicken breasts, ice cream and Pepsi.

I can't tell you how long it has been since I went out to a store just to see if there was anything I could find to buy!...............wait..yes,I can!...I go to a local thrift store now & then and sometimes find REAL deals...(how about a multi-functional briefcase with 17 compartments of REAL Argentinian leather for $12? Must be a $200 item if you found it in a local fancy shop.) How about 4 strange but decorative and comfortable folding chairs that we use for house concerts and taking to craft shows for $19....

Now THAT's shopping...only spending money when it 1) Is necessary or 2)is such a bargain and USEFUL that you can't pass it up. and 3) You KNOW that you can re-sell it at a yard/tag sale or on EBay for more!

What is enjoyable about not being able to get into shops because they have no chair access, not being able to reach items, and getting no help from surly staff, oh how I wish we had ASDA here

Well, I have to admit it...I hate shopping. I only go when I have to have something, whether it's a new car for my wife (we got a brand new Honda Element for her, delivered just last weekend and I might even let her drive her car sometime) or a bunch of bananas.

I don't like the crowds, I don't like looking for a parking place, I don't like pushy clerks, I don't like vanished clerks, I don't like attempts to coerce me into buying what I don't need.

Notice -- "what I don't need." I discovered long ago that there are many things I want, but actually little I need. My wife needed a new car, and we debated long and hard about it because the old one was doing okay.

So, we reached a deal. The old car, a 1993 Honda Accord (30+ miles to the gallon, even with 193,000+ miles on it), was sold to my neice, who'll use it for grad school. Neice reimburses us the amount we put into the car to bring it up to near-perfect shape at her convenience. Pat gets a new Honda Element (25+ mph in the city, so far) with the all-wheel drive and cargo space useful to us here in Idaho. I keep my 1999 Honda Civic, which does pretty much everything I need it to do (90,000 miles, 32 mpg).

Actually, when it comes to cars I don't even WANT much. Just what I need for transportation in safety and relative comfort. Oddly enough, I don't look to my car for self-affirmation or masculinity or anything other than a way to get from here to there.

So, yes, I'd have to say I go buying, not shopping. Shopping (except for Christmas presents!) started to bore me back around the age of 8, and it hasn't changed in the years since.
