Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: Bo Vandenberg Date: 09 Aug 04 - 11:20 AM According to the Register the Daleks are being upgraded with .... LEGS! Legs I say. I liked the cultural myopia that had all of them just rolling around in Dalek friendly areas. Check out the animated gif: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/08/09/dalek_legs/ |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: el ted Date: 09 Aug 04 - 11:24 AM Legs!!! That'll spoil it! I bet in this modern touchy feely world the daleks wont be allowed to be as nasty as they used to be. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: GUEST,Jon Date: 09 Aug 04 - 01:21 PM Good news. Not sure what to think about legs though. I preferred Daleks to Cybermen but neither of them were my favourite of Dr Who's enemies. Mine was The Master as played by Roger Delgado. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: Blackcatter Date: 09 Aug 04 - 01:36 PM Interesting. As a long-time fan of Dr. Who from the U.S., it's good to see the series continue. I was one of the instigators of a campaign to get Dr. Who on U.S. TV back in the early 80s. Miami's public TV station began showing it and we then started a SF con that had a decidedly Dr. Who feel. I've met 5 of the first 6 doctors (Hartnell had passed by then) as well as a number of other cast members. We used to entice them over the con in the nice weather of a February in Miami. I remember having a great conversation in the hot tub with Pat Troughton and Colin Baker. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: CarolC Date: 09 Aug 04 - 02:07 PM BTW, Blackcatter, I watched Dr. Who on Public TV in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the 1970s. Probably around 1976 or '77. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 09 Aug 04 - 02:10 PM The black Dalek used to put the shits up me. It was sort of the foreman and had a slightly higher-pitched voice and always seemed extra pissed off. Especially when the Tharls entered the city. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 09 Aug 04 - 02:11 PM I bet they don't give them legs - there'll be some kind of levitation technology that allows them to get up stairs. Or perhaps those devices they fit on wheelchairs to allow them to climb stairs - For example |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: GUEST Date: 09 Aug 04 - 07:56 PM Even though we had black and white telly, I know what you mean about the black dalek. Definitely the scariest thing on TV. I never thought the prog was as scary in colour, or maybe I was just older? And Bonnie Langford just reminded me of Junior Showtime. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: Shanghaiceltic Date: 09 Aug 04 - 08:19 PM I just wonder if todays kids will run behind the sofa or just channel hop the scary bits. As a six year old when it was originally on we used to nick the cardboard boxes from the local grocer, cut a hole in the top, shove two sticks through the box and stumble up and down the road where we lived scaring cats, dogs, other local kids and old ladies with shrill cries of; 'I AM A DALEK,I AM A DALAK.......' Fondly remembered days. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: GUEST,ozmacca Date: 09 Aug 04 - 08:49 PM Daleks always struck me as animated dustbins with a bad attitude - and an equally bad case of boils. Mind, the aggressive attitude was at least understandable. There they are, minding their own business, not actually intending to dominate the universe. just looking for the bloke who invented the staircase. Somebody mentioned a Dalek Morris side. I always thought the Cybermen would have been ideal for that. They even had the compulsory melodeon-like device stuck on their chests, and I can just see the Doctor and inappropriately clad female companion surrounded by a circle of Cybermen, closing in on them. Cut to frightened faces..... Fade out end of episode to crescendo of slightly ridiculous electronic music...... Start up new episode with close up of leading Cyberman grasping the sides of the aforesaid apparatus and pulling it apart, then striking up a Morris tune as all the other Cybermen start dancing round and hitting each other with sticks covered in silver paper while the Doctor and companion scream in terror. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: Gurney Date: 10 Aug 04 - 04:37 AM Don't know why anyone would worry about them. They were too slow to catch a cold. Ambush killers, and bloody uncamouflaged at that. And they couldn't even get up the kirb! In later episodes they did have a levitation device, and you could nearly see the fishing line. You could murder the lot of them with a Robot Wars contestant, especially Chaos II. THAT would be an episode to watch. Skinned rabbits in a mobility scooter. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: Helen Date: 10 Aug 04 - 04:57 AM I've just come back in to my computer after watching tonight's episode of Dr Who on Oz tv and here you all are talking about him. The Daleks scared the crap out of me as a kid. I used to get up casually and just leave the room for a bit when they went berserk. I think it was the combination of their voices and the black-white-black-white negative effect as people were killed. When I was in a shared house we rented a black & white tv because of Dr Who, and when it started in colour we had to upgrade to a colour tv. The only other movie character which puts the wind up me is the evil bloke in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, when he laughs that high pitched, insane laugh as he dumps the Toon in the barrel of green gloop. I can't watch that scene either. Thank god for fast forward on video players. Helen |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: Dave Bryant Date: 10 Aug 04 - 06:12 AM I've always thought that the daleks must have a lot of trouble with blocked up kitchen sinks - they all seem to carry a plug-hole plunger around with them ! |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: Clinton Hammond Date: 10 Aug 04 - 09:51 AM I've been trying to watch The Key To Time series lately on DVD... Trying being the operative word... man oh man... what was appealing to the child is really lame to the adult... I can't even get into it for the nostalgia... The writing is awful... the acting is worse... Too bad really... I used to count myself as a Dr. Who fan... Guess now I'll stick to Stargate SG-1 |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: The Walrus Date: 10 Aug 04 - 02:10 PM One question. How are the Daleks going to cope with an essential element missing - the lights on the side of the turret/head, what will they do now they can't get Morris 1000 side lights or indicators? Walrus |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 12 Aug 04 - 12:26 PM I just had a flashback that made me sad. In 1964 (?) when the Daleks first appeared, the Daily Express ran a Dr. Who competition where you could win a Dalek! I entered, won, and got in the post a cut-it-out-yersel cardboard Dalek that you scored down the lines ans cellotaped together. It was crap. I was soooooooooooooo disappointed. Anyone else get one of those? |

Subject: RE: BS: The Daleks are back From: Shanghaiceltic Date: 13 Aug 04 - 02:44 AM I recall my dad scouring the town for battery operated daleks for Christmas, every where was sold out or seemed to be, but on Christmas Day they were in the stocking. What a dad! Could never understand why our teacher in Primary school put her foot down when we suggested that daleks be Herod's men or the bad guys in the Nativity Play, so we stuck with the good old stable scene and no massacre by Daleks or reference to Herod and the massacre of the innocents. |
