Tuesday was our last broadcast until the new year. This being the case we had a beer and stayed there for an extra half hour. Unfortunately the servers have not archived the show (again, I am looking into contingency plans). But the playlist follows in case you caught it live, or are curious.

Hiya...

Played 'Liza as a kind of link into the next show (drum and bass with DJ Canola), and I quite like it still, though I would agree Rice is the better of the two albums.

Red Kites got played because I literally had to grab some of the stuff in my car to fill in the gaps which wouldn't have been there if Chris and I had been nattering as usual, so I decided to play a slow one for a change. Also I needed calming down ;o)

We'd love to have people in but the studio is minute (what you see on the webcam is, basically, what you get. Less cowshed, more garden shed really. I don't know if we could fit GMW, Chris and myself in there all at once, I am sure there is a way round this
though...

Website links, this has always been the plan, but since there are only about ummm...30, is it?, hours in the day ;o)...I haven't had chance to do it yet. If people could let me have info they would like putting on there that would be great. I'm going to do loads of work on it over Xmas.

Ooh, and another thing. I like Spiers and Boden/BellowHEAD too, but don't go overboard on any artist. That is the mistake that the smoothies make. The art of being a successful broadcaster/critic/commentator is to put your own prejudices aside and present the bigger picture - but you are are on the right track. You've done about eight broadcasts and I've had more pleasure from those than the eight o'clock slot from elsewhere in seven years.

Well, just caught up and once again, you have done the business - except, (sorry if you are lurking 'liza) Red Rice. The problem with amalgamating contemporary influences with trad is that the result could sound dated, tired or old hat pretty quickly. Does this break new ground? Well, I reckon Faiport managed it with a Sailor's Life and then Liege and Lief, Steeleye with Hark! The Village Wait, Morris On, with Morris On and Shirley Collins with the Albion Country Band with No Roses. There have been few quantum leaps since then, Martyn Bennett with Grit and Mr Moray with Sweet England being contenders, but Red sounded dated as soon as I heard it, whereas Rice, is an astounding album.

Ahem, got a bit carried away. The live recording of Kerr and Fagan just shows what an astounding (astounding count reaches 2) player Nancy Kerr is. She plays challenging fiddle pieces and sings (and so I'm told can dance too) simultaneously - I've promised my son the business at Fiddles at Witney, so don't let me down Nancy.

I lurve Julie Murphy, but maybe some attention should be placed elsewhere before she gets played to death like the aforementioned 'l and the Barnsley Lass.

Great to hear some old stuff (wrote stiff but then used the backspace!) even with a B****O. More please, yes more please. A balance between happening, classic and antecedent would make a really good programme into a must hear. Fortunately, I'm either reheasring or working Wednesday nights, so I don't often endure the torture of the smooth one.

Well done Fee and get well soon Chris. Absolutley marvellous. Which reminds me, get that Ian Giles on (preferably with his mates Metcalfe and Woods) TO DO A LIVE THING. There is a jolly good guitarist/singer who lives in Oxford who you could get to do a session too. His name is John Thompson.

And last (for now) get some links on your site to the folk clubs in the area and listings of sessions. The listeners are hungry for the dirty experience.

Morning all!

Well, I broadcast on my own for the first time last night because Chris is ill (get well soon Chris!!). A slightly stressful yet still enjoyable experience and I apologise for; the constant clattering of CD cases, crashing of tracks into each other(I was working the machines by instinct rather than experience) and moving away from the mic when I was talking. It was 'Sylvie' we played on the show, which is an American - and possibly modernised (?) version of Sovay (Sylvie/Sylvia)/Female Highwayman; "Put a gun in her pocket and the keys in her plam, she drove away slowly to find her man" makes me think she's in a car? Anyway, it's a marvellous song, may play the Witches version at some point...

I'm hoping to get us in 'Living Tradition' as well, actually, would anyone mind if I put some quotes on the website?

Shirley Collins recorded this as Nottamun Town on Folk Routes, New Routes which she made with Davy Graham in the early 1960s. This was hailed as innovative then and still sounds so to my ears. I believe she got it the tune from the Ritchie family of Kentucky who had in turn incorporated an originally English text. I'm not sure of Dylan's precise source of the tune he used for Masters of War though would have had ample opportunity to hear Shirley (and her various wannabee imitators) performing Nottamun Town around the London clubs in 1962/3.

Btw, I think I told a fib when I said Julie Murphy's 'Sylvie' was based on Shirley Collins' version. In fact I think she said 'Polly Vaughan' off 'Black Mountains Revisited'was based on the Shirley Collins version. 'Sylvie' is the original English song that Bob Dylan used for the melody of 'Masters of War'.

Erm...maybe you could try saving to the desktop and then pasting the 'cool as folk' URL into your Real Player. I was quite impressed at how it downloads automatically when you listen live. This means you have two chances at listen again. All helps in the bid for world domination of the airwaves...

Mrs Annie...I have the same trouble with RealPlayer so I changed my default media player to Windows Media Player and it runs it fine through that, but you don't seem to get the pause/ffwd/rwd facility so you'll have to listen to our nattering ;o)...might be worth a try?.

Well, I spend two hours in a seminar and two hours reading about Neolithic Malta and you've all been having a fantastic conversation on here :o). I'm in finals too by the way, however am equally pressed for time due to having a full time job - lets not go into education funding here - and a melodeon to practice....and a website to maintain...it just never stops!

Re: the longer show idea Chris mentioned above, we talked about it last week, I'd like to do it but it would be a shame for him to lose Random Noises, as it's a great show...as for being in the studio for three hours, well, I'll just have to learn a bit more about the technology so I can give him a break....

Mary in the studio singing (or talking!) would be lovely, I really enjoyed the show we did with Hilary James, more guests would be grand!.

Mrs Annie...good to see you over here, I hope you like the show when you hear it!. I get around a bit as you can tell...;o) (the brass in the Coconut dance is supposed to be dischordant I guess...it actually reminds me of what Loose Tubes used to do, stretching notes and stuff, from my misspent jazz filled youth...). I'm looking forward to the Oysterband and Eliza...I would say we should try find each other but I always fail to find the person I'm looking for (isn't that right Countess?)

Sorry I need some help. I've managed to 'listen live' and it's coming over quite clear (dial-up). Something loaded up called a Junction 11 mini-player.
But when I click on the schedule, then on Cool as Folk then 'listen to Tues at 10 pm' this happens:
a box telling me I have chosen to download a file and do I want to 'open' or 'save' I choose 'open'.
Real One Player loads up and says connecting......... then I get an error message 'a general error has occurred'.
Can anybody help me please?

Great radio show - you are doing a wonderful job of playing stuff that no-one on the BBC is bothering with, for reasons quite unaccountable to many of us.
Of course I am up for a session of Welsh songs - PM me about it.
You ask for suggestions of Welsh songs/ recordings available. You could try playing some of Siwsann George(Traditional Songs of Wales ; Saydisc CD-SDL 406 ) - or Mabsant of which Siwsann George was a member. There is Calennig - the wonderful Mick Tems & Pat Carron-Smith or the hauntingly beautiful voice of Sian James. 'Gweini Tymor' is a favourite album of mine , on Sain SCD 2145.
There is the triple harp playing of Robin Huw Bowen or Nansi Richards or Llio Rhydderch.
You could play some tracks from the duo Bragod, they get a fair amount of interest from Late Junction on Radio 3.Wierd but wonderful stuff it is too.
Try that for starters! And don't stint on the Julie Murphy!

Chris , you have a copy of our other, own-label album "Through The Groves" which has one song in Welsh on it. We are thinking of doing a whole CD of Welsh songs and tunes. It'll definitely be a home-produced CDR because there won't be such a big demand for it, but we've found there is certainly some interest.

But did you mean a studio session, as in broadcasting live?

Nigel Eaton - will be seeing him in Blowzabella tomorrow night in Bury - excited about that. And then on Saturday we will see Andy Cutting again in Derby with John McCusker - how about some Chris Wood & Andy Cutting on the show?

Dan, you are not the only one. I find the brass in Bellowhead quite annoying - specially in the Coconut Dance where it seems to be discordant (is that correct grammar?) with the rest of the tune. But I do like the rest of it - just ditch the trumpets!

Just out of interest...

how many people have listened/listen to Random Noises, which is my eclectic music show which goes out in the hour before Cool as Folk? I've tried not to put too much emphasis on it, at the expense of Cool as Folk, but does anyone tune in? There's often a lot of roots stuff in there, with the Blind Boys of Alabama and Richard & Teddy Thompson in there this week, and the likes of Julie Murphy, Tom Waits, Nick Drake and Colum Sands getting in there in past weeks, alongside pop, R n B, hip-hop, rock and wahtever else takes my fancy. Hopefully, I should have top local indie-pop band Chinafight doing an interview next week.

I know Diane enjoyed my John Peel tribute, have you heard any others? Anyone else? Personally I'm quite proud of my Kylie-Frank Sinatra segway this week! :)

Richard Thompson is one of my all-time heroes and there ain't a lot of what he's done that I don't like. But no, not that. I really do like to hear him doing his own compositions that he wrote for Fairport e.g. Matty Groves (you don't get to hear that often, or The New St George (as opposed to the Albion Band version) - and especially stuff he co-wrote with Dave Swarbrick like O Be Thankful and Crazy Man Michael. See, I'm writing an RT featurette for you...

Thanks as ever for the for the feedback. Just listening back to the show as I type.

Re: the buzz. That's obviously an ongoing problem, that needs addressing, but involves the station managers rather than me. I'm going to approach them and draw attention to it and tell them that John Spiers has kindly offered to look at it for us (to which they'll say, "Who?"!). A lot of it is a time matter, I'm in my final year at uni so have got a degree to get as well, which usually takes second place to the show, but really shouldn't! Add a job, DJing, socialising, wasting time on Mudcat etc. and it's a busy old life!

Re: Timing. Yeah I think it has been a bit rushed at the end for the last couple of shows, and I know it's annoying when they cut off at the end. If you quickly click on 'Listen to Tuesday's show at 11pm' you can hear the end of the track, but I will try and time the last track last week so we get it all in. I'm also thinking less rambling and Fee's microphone as loud as it can be from the start of the show! It's always down low when I get in the studio, I don't think the guy before us likes his co-presenter!

Re: Longer show. We're thinking about expanding Cool as Folk to two hours. I'm unsure because I don't want to loose my hour of Random Noises which gives me a chance to play the stuff I like that doesn't fit the Cool as Folk remit, but nor am I sure I want to be in the studio for three hours! Would people support a longer show or are you okay with one hour?

Treewind: No problem playing you and Mary Humphries' 'Barb'ry Ellen', it's a good album that I should play more from.

Countess Richard: Did you not like that take on 'Matty Groves'? I love it. The Leige and Lief version is amazing, but I figured it was pretty well known, and I love the rawness of that live version. Sure Richard Thompson doesn't sing like Sandy Denny, but the harshness kind of suits the lyrical content. What did everyone else think?

Mary Humphries: Glad you liked the Julie Murphy track. Her solo albums are mostly in English with a smattering of Welsh, whereas her work with Fernhill (we've played two tracks by them already) is mostly in Welsh with a wee bit of English. Can you recommend any other good Welsh language singers? I have a recording of a Welsh language traditional song by a great singer you might not neccessarily think of as folk lined up (don't worry it's not Paul Weller...).

Re: Requests. I have the new Crucible album thanks to Jess. I've not had a chance to listen to it yet, but I'll put it on the top of the pile and hopefully get them in soon! Saw them at Sidmouth and liked what I saw.

I don't know what we can do. It needs a tech to sort it I think, probably won't happen until Xmas vac when the studio's empty.

Timing...yeah, we're terrible for running over, if you listen to the following show you'll get the end of Horizonto and then some drum'n'bass (we're trying to convert her...). We actually had to drop three or possibly more tracks we were going to play anyway!.

We have the Crucible to play at some point I believe, when we can fit it in.... Perhaps we need longer than an hour, I don't know what the station policy is, then we could run over on that too ;o)

Perhaps I just like the loudness :o), mind you I tend to play quite loudly myself!

I got amazingly lost and ended up driving round half of Oxfordshire last night due to having BELLOWhead on far too loud in the car on the way back from Melodeons at Witney, hence stopping me concentrating. Mind you this getting lost thing is quite common so perhaps it's just my lousy sense of direction ;o).

We may or may not be playing a track tomorrow...we have two to go I think...I don't think I'll be allowed to play an entire hour of melodeon music, sadly :o(   ;o)

Having seen the John McCusker Band on the BBC4 programme about Sidmouth, I think he could do with some serious quality control, along with his missus - so I guess that means you won't want me to buy you a pint now. Bellowhead/Steeleye Span. Heck I won't need to open my purse at this rate. I've never been a fan of Span. Their first album (Hark! The Village Wait) was very good, very, very good, (despite the) sensitive arrangements of banjo, autoharp, dulcimer, concertina, mandolin, guitar, bass, drums, lush vocals and step dancing, but I feel they lost direction several times after that and are still refusing to consult a map. Bellowhead is very good, but if you've heard the dynamic duo several times (as I have), you might be thinking, isn't it time to learn some new material? However, I agree with the Countess, seeing them live is very different. All that energy, sweat, noise - love it! So get your LOUD ghetto blaster and take it in the shower room for good effect.

And no avoiding the Shirley Collins thing.

Maybe I have to see it live then.

I just find the brass parts etc not very well put together. I know of far more sophisticated stuff - June Tabors "A quiet eye", La Bottine Souriante (sic?), even Kate Rusby (I know...I know...) with "My young man". Of course "sophistication" isn't be all and end all, but for energetic stuff Salsa Celtica do a good job etc. On top of this Jon B is beginning to sound like a pastiche of himself to me - all comedy yelps and over-strained notes - the stuff I liked about "through and through" magnified so much its uncomfortable.

I hear the idea was to be like a big disco/funk band (considering Squeezys dodgy DJ past its not surprising), but I just don't think the arrangements work very well. I don't doubt the skills of the main protagonists, and I think this is why I'm so dissapointed - I expected better and certainly the sound I heard in my head when I had the Oxford gig described to me was better.

English music has never not been part of the world - its only a problem if you decide theres a problem there. I don't think what I've heard is helping any kind of cause, and nor should it - its entertainment!! But I don't think it should be portrayed as such. Saying "yes, english music is joining the world" is just trotting out cliches that don't mean anything. Thats another thread, another time though...

I'm glad you all like it, and that a band is able to inspire such enthusiasm in a genre like this, but I havn't heard an explanation of the thing I'm missing yet...

Absolutely...I was completely overwhelmed by it, I really hadn't known what to expect! It was brilliant!.

BELLOWhead.... I'm listening to it right now...I find it really uplifting. The whole thing just makes me smile!. among other things.. those Hollywood strings on the beginning of Prickle Eye Bush are fab, and the brass section in the Coconut Dance works really well...I would say it does benefit from being played very LOUD.

If it reminds me of anything, mood wise certainly, it reminds me of the Brazilian stuff I heard when we started doing Batmacumba at the ICA 7ish years ago (I think it's still running, I don't work there anymore...). We had a Brazilian carnival band in one night...they had the same effect on the hard to impress, arty types as BELLOWhead did on the Oxford audience...:o)

Bellowhead disappointing? Well, maybe you mean that the material isn't groundbreaking. In that sense, I'd agree; the tracks on E.P.ONYMOUS are re-arrangements of well-known Spiers & Boden mainstays of the past couple of years or so and all have been previously recorded - by them and by many others before

But it is, surely, the arrangements that are the point. It's now possible to distinguish exactly what is going on in Jon Boden's complex musical patterns and hear just where this band is taking our music: yes English music is joining the world.

A live performance is something else. Bellowhead's debut last April in Oxford was so triumphant and unbelievable that I've found it impossible to find sufficiently ecstatic words to convey to those who were unfortunate enough not to have been part of the exuberant explosion in Oxford Town Hall, just how important this was. 'Cotswold' was previously just a kind of cheese to many of those unable to resist leaping up and following the lead of a few Morris Offspring up and down the hallowed aisles of local government. Taking a swerve off topic for a second, am I alone in finding Bellowhead a little dissapointing? I didn't see the gig at Sidmouth, so maybe its better live, but all the tracks played on CaF so far have been distinctly underwhelming.

Its not that I don't like it, its just that I like other stuff thats new at the moment much more. Also, I'm not suggesting you shouldn't play it (on the contrary, play it more), I just don't understand why everyone seems to be holding above everything else at the moment.

Am I in a minority of one?

Don't mind you going slightly off topic, especially as it's caused a flurry of interest in the thread! It just happens that I was planning to play something by Anahata and Mary Humphries next week anyway (not to say that blatent hints aren't a good idea, I'm always open to requests, even for your own stuff!). And of course we've already played three BELLOWhead tracks, and plan to get the other two in in the next few weeks, seeing as a) it was an exclusive and b) it's so damn good!

Sadly I haven't got a copy of 'No Roses', it's on the wishlist! It's on Topic isn't it? They've been good for sending me new releases (should have the new Martin Carthy and Bob Davenport's coming soon!) but haven't sounded too keen on sending me back catelogue. I'll mention it again at an opportune moment!

As for Ashley Hutchings, I tend to think of him as a great innovator and leader rather than a particularly notable musicians or songwriter in his own right. Early Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and Albion Band were all brilliant, but I always felt the brightest talents were the other members such as Richard Thompson, Dave Swarbrick and Sandy Denny in Fairport, Martin Carthy and Maddy Prior in Steeleye, John Tams in the Albion Band etc.

I get the impression he's gone a bit worn out and sentimental of late. Patchy is my verdict! I remember Grandson of Morris On instead of the John McCusker Band at Sidmouth one year and being bitterly disappointed. There were a few good moments but it needed some serious quality control, and reports from the John McCusker Band were great. I made a vow to stick with the fresh talent over the old farts from then on. Thank the lord I saw BELLOWhead over Steeleye Span this year.

Talking of Fairport, I'm hoping to get the live Richard Thompson-sung version of Matty Groves off House Full into next weeks show, got some great Swarb fiddling in there.

Don't have the Penguin Book of English Folk Songs (where do I blag a copy of that?!), what else is in it? I played a track by Fernhill the other day called 'Grey Cock' but I think it was more of an amalgam of several different songs. Don't have the Jez Lowe version.

Finally, I got an email offering me the New Scorpion Band album, and replied with my address, but haven't heard anything since.

To continue just for a moment the mild thread drift, Rachel McShane is another folk cellist in Bellowhead. And Barry Dransfield used to play it too, but he put a strap on it and played standing up.

Anahata's cello playing is wonderfully expressive and I hope to be hearing it soon on Cool as Folk (to return to topic). One of my favourite tracks from Sharp Practice with Mary is Barbara Allen during which the instrument really does speak. He can also be heard to brilliant effect on Patterson Jordan Dipper's Flat Earth CD which is something else I'm hoping to hear played soon (more hints...)

sticks this week...I don't dance (though I fear it may be only a matter of time!!) but try to play (emphasis on TRY) along with the rest of the musos...it's really quite difficult when you can't hear yourself...

Peter...Sylvie is a fantastic song (I like it more than the trad. version, coincidentally was just listening to Carthy/Swarbrick version in the car). But I have to say I find JM is a bit drowned by the hurdy gurdy unfortuantely, hence you can't hear the lovely singing quite so well!!.

Hello Fee..... to be honest I haven't got a clue WHAT I'm on! :-) although there might be a few people on this board who'd offer up a few suggestions! (Not ALL of them good!) ;-)

But I'm assured by 'He who ought to know better!' that I'm on dial up! I just press buttons and things happen! That's all I understand about computers, ABSOLUTE MAGIC!! Spoke to someone in Canada the other day.....Wow!! Almost as magical as Reading!!!

Lizzie...are you on broadband or dial up?. I know is almost impossible to listen via dialup because the connection's too slow. you could try a different player (as above, I can't play it through Real but can thru Windows Player).

If you're experiencing a buzzing noise on playback then that's normal (unfortunately)...we seem to have some sort of feedback problem on the desk...it happens on everyone's show.

(hmm...I think it may have been a hurdy gurdy actually...a horrible way to go...;o)

CET - Fee from the show here...I have had the same problem with Real Player...so I changed over to Windows Media player (chose it as the default player), through which it plays OK, perhaps worth trying it the other way round for you?. I'm not techy (am only just learning to work the desk in the studio!) but it might be worth a try. It would be lovely to have a listener in Canada!. If you still have trouble let us know and I'll see what I can find out for you...

Lizzie - Glad you like the show when you haven't even heard it yet!The Larkrise Ranter will make themselves know if they want to I'm sure...we like a bit of mystery...;o).

Breezy - We'll do our best to mention stuff, however, we seem to find ourselves running out of time every week!. If there's no-one in after us we do sometimes overrun, but you only get the hour on 'listen back'.

Hearing Jake Thackray brought back memories. I remember seeing him in Bristol clubs about 30 years ago; both funny and poignant. A talented chap indeed. Hi guys,

I am thrilled to say that for tomorrow's show me and Fee will be joined by singer and multi-instrumentalist Hilary James. We'll play a few tracks from across her career and chat about her music, her new album 'Laughing with the Moon' and her role as head of the folk society at Reading Uni back in the seventies.

If you don't know Hilary's work, she is a fine singer who's work encompasses blues, bluegrass and children's song as well as folk song from Britian, Ireland and America. I presented this show with my new mate Fee, who, as she says above, has swiftly risen through the ranks from the lady on Mudcat to the lady I met at the Kate Rusby gig to the lady in the chat room to the one-off co-presenter to the full time co-presenter/organiser/e-mailer/promoter! She's got great music taste and a big old CD collection, she's even rumoured to be working on a website for the show, watch this space! So from now on you'll be getting postings/emails from either of us, which might mean you don't have to wait so long for updates/replies (sorry for anyone still waiting for an email reply!).

I'd be interested to hear how well everyone is hearing the show. When I listened back on the broadband campus computers there was a slight hum in the background but it wasn't very intrusive, but others had worse problems with it. If you do have trouble, try listening on a different connection speed. I'll also try and track down the tech people at the studio and see if they can improve the output. But please don't be put off, only a very small number of people have had any problems with it, give it a try!

Bentley...I'd be interested to hear about those myself!!!, as a newcomer to playing an instrument (melodeon, sorry..!) rather than just listening to the music, I've had a bit of trouble finding out what's going on in Berkshire live music/session wise...the Swan is really quite near me (driving), and Bramley is even nearer!!!

Chris and I (he promoted me to co-presenter last week, that's what you get for going in the chatroom!) were talking about Caversham Folk Club off air last Tuesday day, which is the only one I'd heard of...I'll see what he thinks, I think it's a good idea...

Hi Chris - yes, I was listening in on the 128k Ogg stream and there was a thin buzzing noise in the background. Something not quite right in the studio or transmission link there? I wouldn't call it unlistenable but keeping noises like that away is what the technical side of professional broadcasting is about!

Thanks for the comments guys. I'll do a full playlist and round-up tomorrow (still got a load to do and it's past midnight! aaargh!). Just a couple of questions:

1) Has anyone else had any 'hum' or distortion listening to the show? I've had a couple of people say it was all but unlistenable but lots more don't even mention it. Last weeks show sounded fine when I listened back to it.

2) Three or four tracks for the Floor Spot feature (where I look at one artist in various permatations)? I said three to four but so far it has been four on each. I realise it takes up a large chunk of the show, but also feel that three is never quite enough to show the full variety of what a lot of these artists do. One of them is normally something a bit different from the norm: ie. Kate Rusby with Show of Hands, Sandy Denny with Led Zeppelin, Martyn Bennett with Margaret Bennett etc. What are your thoughts?

Hi Chris - listened to part of your show on Tues and found it quite intersesting. Some interesting spoken gaelic stuff which, in my opinion (for what it's worth) didn't need the (again, in my opinion)rather self indulgent instrumental backing - didn't add to the power of the spoken word, which would have been powerful enogh on its own.

Did try to get into the chatroom but it disconnected me more than once

Keep it up, you're finding some good stuff out there - and giving an airing to some good material which wouldn't otherwise have a forum

Chris ....Glad your playing some of Robins' stuff from Temple,great artists and production quality is brilliant.

See if you can get some of Peter Nardinis' recordings from Robin,he's the authentic voice of urban Scotland and so underrated as a writer.

Davie Robertsons CD   "Star o' the bar" on Greentrax is full of origional gems. Hes as good a writer as McGinn.

Glad to hear so many were listening. I was working in the CD booth at the union yesterday and got chatting to this guy, suddenly asked, "Are you Chris? I was listening to your show!". I also played Kate Rusby's 'My Young Man' on my Random Noises show the hour before and someone on the chatroom said "Wow, this is amazing". I love the fact that I've got a dual audience of dedicated folkies and random Junction 11 listeners!

Lindsey - Yeah I saw Seth Lakeman with John Jones and thought he was a very talented musician, if I'm not too keen on his voice. Great for spreading the word. I kind of knew there was a gap in the market but I've been bowled over by the response. Here's to Cool as Folk growing and growing! I want to get involved professionally with folk music promotion so if I can get a bit of a following now it'll do me no end of good.

Bernard - Sorry I don't have a recording. I meant to ask a friend to tape it but forgot! I'll look into the possibility of recording to minidisk. Anyone else...?

Fi - Well if you want to come along one week that'd be great. Maybe a melodeon performance is in order...

Anahata - Switiching too Radio 3? Controversial! Still glad I got it. The very first play of BELLOWhead on air ever. Can't wait till their huge! Glad you got a quality sound, I was a bit worried it wasn't up to scratch.

What did everyone makes of the Pete MacGregor track? I was really impressed with his album, he's a quality songwriter. Think a lot of them could become standards if they were widely heard.

But I wanted to post cos I'm dead excited! Just got an email off John Spiers saying he's going to send me the new BELLOWhead EP! Wow! If you haven't heard, BELLOWhead are the new Spiers and Boden Big Band and their gig at Sidmouth was one of the most fantastic gigs I've been to in years. Such passion and energy! BTW there's supposed to be a pic of me dancing to them in this month's fRoots. Haven't seen it myself yet, but I'm the dude with short brown dreadlocks and probably green trousers.

On Kate Rusby (it was a brilliant gig) yes, I too have found she's one of the best ways of getting people to listen to the music we love...! But when I played her some Eliza Carthy (off Red/Rice) she said it was too hardcore...go figure!. I'll keep at it ...;o)

Sorefingers - Firstly, the show is playing British folk which includes Scottish, Welsh and theoretically Northern Irish music as well as English music from all areas. I'm not specifically trying to focus on any areas or styles, it's just British folk music I like and have got on CD. Secondly, although I appreciate that the Irish and British music is closely intertwined, I'm trying to dispel the myth that all folk music is 'Irish'. Also I don't have enough of a CD collection of Irish music, so if I did try and address it I would be accused of underrepresenting it. Can't win. At the end of the day, all musics are intertwined, but I wanted to make this more focussed than other folk shows. I've discussed all of this earlier don't want to get drawn in on it at length.

Don't get your point about urban music? I'm sure a lot of artists and trad. music comes from cities originally. Are you talking about contemporary urban music in the Radio 1 sense, because I just don't see how that relates to what we know as folk music? I'm more than happy to play contemporary folk music from the city or the country. Cheers.

Noble though your enterprise be Mr Chris, the idea that there is a claer line dividing 'English' and the other British folk is a little silly from my experience.

As far back as 197 something playing what I thought was an Irish tune - BTW when nobody cared what a folkie played as long as it was traditional and acoustic - and was corrected by a gentleman giving me what he insisted was the correct name.

Course there is a strong case to be made for promoting the superb music of the 'folk' era, Nick Jones, Martin Carthy ( isn't that an Oirish name ? ) and the rest, surely that does not mean we have to ignore the super music of lessser know regions such as Dorset, Cornwall etc.

OTOH I would not be that hasty about claiming Irish or Scottish etc music is so ethnic that it is not English. For I all of these people are English speaking - thanx to English efforts, for 2 lots of people who compose and play the music do it with English dance forms - Hornpipe -and themselves are descendents of not just any old English person but Gentlemen and Ladies.

Next beef I have with the line drawing, what about urbanmusic in London, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham etc Are these also excluded?

In short are you not turning off the true source of 'English Folk' by
restricting the audience to Victorian Shanties and Countrybumpkin rants all from the age of horsehit and habberdashers?

In reply to various people since my last post:

Bernard - I haven't listened back to it yet, so don't know about the sound quality. We've got tech people at the station who wont be at all happy if I start fiddling about, but if it sounds bad I'll have words and tell them I know someone who might be able to help. Thanks for the offer! Did you enjoy the music?

Artbrooks – Thanks for the tip-off, I'll look into them! If I was a mean person I might suggest you're better off not knowing about Cara Dillon, but of course I'm not!

GUEST – Fair enough if Kate Rusby's not your cup of tea, and I realise she has had a lot of exposure. The reasons behind my choice: 1) She's a good 'middle ground' choice for my first show in that she's young and fresh and accessable, but still fairly traditional, with both a broad appeal and respect from the folkies. 2) She's just played a gig in Reading on Sunday. 3) I have seen her twice at Sidmouth and they have been some of the best gigs I have ever seen. And most importantly, 4) I think she is one the most talented performers in the Britain, with an beautiful voice, fantastic musicians, brilliant songs both traditional and original and a warm stage manner! She's one of my all time greats, up there with all the Watersons, Carthys, Thompsons and anyone else you've got! I see her as leading the new folk revival (if I dare use that term) of young new folk talents. So yeah, I like Kate Rusby!

Noddy and Bernard – I was having a debate with a friend about genres and pigeonholes the other day. I think they get a bit of a bad name. Sure people get too obsessive about it and anyone artist will feed off a load of different styles and genres. But the 'I hate pigeonholing' argument can also be used to justify the exclusion of music. I'm sure Mike Harding would argue that the reason he plays so much of what I would call country and acoustic pop music is because he shouldn't be pigeonholing artists in such specific categories. Agree about the New Scorpion Band. Listening to them on Netscape radio yesterday for the firt time in ages and had forgotten how good they were. Funnily enough last time I saw Tim Laycock was at the South Hills art centre near that neck of the woods.

Agree with all said about English Folk. Them cunning Celts have enough good stuff that we can listen to. Us poor Picts have very little:-(

Well, having listened to Spiers and Boden well and truly shut up a DJ on Radio Devon (who had spent the previous couple of hours desperately trying to take the mick out of folk music) with a fantastic live performance of Shropshire Rounds/Rusty Gully/ Three Footed Chestnut that even sounded great thru my tinny laptop speakers, the more English music gets out there there better in my opinion!

Cats at work - yes, amazing that Radio Cornwall decided there was no demand for John the Fish's slot. It may be that he decided to stop and they couldn't find anyone else to take it on - I don't know.
Still and all, I'll certainly listen to the Reading output on the Internet - I think Harding is at the mercy of the programme planners and would certainly give more artists an airing if he had the chance.

BBC GMR 'Sounds of Folk' has been running for 18 months, now, with Alio presenting and (for the past 12 months) me doing the technical bits... Laura and Jenny complete the team.

We've had lots of interesting guests - live in the studio, on the telephone, or pre-recorded.

So, if you have even half the success we have had, you'll really enjoy yourself!

I record the desk output on minidisc every week, which I then burn to CD to keep as an archive...

Unfortunately I won't be able to listen to you live, as I'll be driving home from Morris practice, but I hope to log on and catch it later on t'internet...

why oh why does everybody feel the need to focus extra time on Kate Rusby? I'm not knocking her, I happen to think she's very good, I enjoy her music, she has a stunning voice... but.... on the strength of some very sensible efforts put into marketing on her part, plus a good dose of being in the right place at the right time, she _is_ very well known and already has far more than her share of media coverage. The BBC4 tv Sidmouth special had a lot of her, Mike Harding plays a lot of her, all the message boards on the net are full of people singing her praises...
I'm sure it's too late for you to reconsider her as your 'spotlight artist' Chris, even if you wanted to, so I'm not even going to suggest that, I guess I'm just making a general moan for 'please can we have a bit more variety...'

Oh, and Anahata's suggestion for getting in touch with WildGoose (http://www.wildgoose.co.uk
... hope that works!) is a very sensible one. There's some great stuff on that label.

Again thanks for all the feedback and support guys. And it hasn't even started yet, I'm getting a bit nervous!

Ooh I knew the old British thing would set some debate off! Me and Robin Morton sent a few emails back and forth on this matter. At the time I didn't know who he was and assumed he was just some guy who did the Temple Records PR! Feel a bit intimidated now I know he runs the whole thing and was is Boys of the Lough and worked on Dick Gaughan's Handful of Earth etc. Although I'm proud I stuck up for myself!

I'm hoping to get involved with the folk music industry in PR or suchlike 'when I grow up' so it's all good contacts, as long as I don't piss them all off! :)

As for the English/British malarkey I did consider doing an English only show, but there are a few Scottish/Welsh acts that I couldn't consider excluding (Martyn Bennett for example, I adore!). So onwards I go with my admittedly Anglocentric view of Britian, but with the hope that I'll be introduced to more Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish acts through the kind charity of record companies (hint hint :)) or more likely angry emails from irate Welsh/Scots/Irishmen!

I certainly agree that folk exposure in mainstream media is still almost totally devoted to the 'celtic' music of Ireland and Scotland (although a few Scots may take exception to their culture being a 'fringe'!). In the interests of showing both sides of the coin, I did get the impression from Robin Morton though, that the folk press has reacted so strongly against this mainstream misrepresentation that they are in danger of cutting off the Scots. Think of the folk heroes that have been strongly championed of late and it's the Waterson Carthy's, Kate Rusby, Spiers & Boden and Jim Moray, all English. These are the people being presented as the acceptable face of folk and there's not a Scot (or Welsh person) amongst them. But then again maybe there are similar Scots stars but we're just not hearing about them down here. I dunno, it's 5.30am, I don't known anything much except that I can't sleep!!

So to answer some of you individually again:

Artbrooks – Yeah I'll definitely put a new post up after the show, probably with the playlist. Gotta keep boosting the post up to the top! As for the 'Cara CD' is that Cara Dillon? In which case it might have be a polite no thanks, not a big fan (that girly voice and all the keyboards and poppy new songs, get some grit girl!). Plus she's Irish isn't she, or is she Northern Irish? This could prove a tricky matter!

GUEST – Well I am a new massive fan of Julie Murphy and Fernhill (much of which is sung in Welsh) so that should get some Welsh input into the show. Also I was thinking the other day, not an obvious candidate, but Cerys Matthews does a rather good folk song in Welsh on her solo album amongst all the alt. country stuff. I remember the track she did with Eliza Carthy at one of the BBC Folk Awards as being rather good, but I don't think they ever recorded it properly. Any other suggestions of Welsh acts?

Noddy – Thanks for the list of names, I'll keep an eye out for them. I used to be into Runrig but I've kind of dismissed them as over-earnest mainstream folk-lite of late. I'll give them another listen and see if I'm being unfair. Got Capercallie's Delirium, it's okay, might play some off it but never majorly grabbed me, too many 80s keyboard I suspect. Never thought that Mull Historical Society were a folk band, thought they were more indie? Think I've got some Tartan Amoebas on a compilation I rather like of cutting edge Scottish folk fusion so they may well get a play, also have a feeling I have a Tannahill Weavers track, bizaarely, on a compilation of English Folk! I don't think I've got anything by the rest. But feel free to email in a request for any of the above ([e-mail]) and that'll all but guarentee it gets in there!

The first show is set to be a bit of a Sidmouth special, with tracks by artists I've especially enjoyed in concert there. The Floor Spot (the little section where I highlight 4 tracks from throughout an artists career) will be on Kate Rusby. Hope you enjoy it!

The profiile of traditional arts in these islands is weighted disproportionately towards the Celtic fringes against those which are intrinsically English. This is the fault not of the exponents who find nothing unnatural in pride in their cultural heritage, but of the English themselves who do not, on the whole, recognise that they even have a culture.

Try talking about ritual dance to a member of the 'non-folk' masses and you find that they think sword dancing is men in kilts dancing daintily across a crossed pair on the ground. The only other 'traditional' dance they know of is Riverdance.

Overheard passing an Anchor Gardens ceilidh was a mother knowledgeably informing her child that Whapweasel were playing Irish music...

There's an overwhelming need for a radio programme concentrating on English music. For the time being, there's more than enough of the rest swamping our airwaves, most noticeably from our public service broadcaster. I wish Chris every success in redressing this imbalance.

Murray MacLeod - I do confess my main knowledge is about English music, but I do hope to find out more about Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish folk. I've been sent a lot of stuff by Temple Records which releases Scottish music, and hope to get some of that into the show . I've recently fallen madly in love with Julie Murphy and Fernhill from Wales so they'll be getting some airplay. Northern Ireland is tricky cos it's surprising how often an artist is simply referred to as being Irish, without any clue as to what bit they're from. Of course if anyone has any recommendations of Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish music I should know about, send me an email at [e-mail].

Super Ted - Yeah, I must admit part of my motivation is the extreme frustration I feel listening to Mike Harding's show. Nothing wrong the the music itself, but surely we need at least one show solely addressing the folk music of the countries the BBC is broadcasting to?!

Thought you might be interested to know, that I am beginning a brand new radio show devoted to British folk music on Tuesday the 5th of November (two weeks!).

It is called 'Cool as Folk' (nicked from Tim van Eyken's t-shirt!), and will be broadcast on Reading's Junction 11 on Tuesdays, 10-11pm, and can be picked up on 1287am in the area. That's fairly irrelevant to most people, but it will be STREAMED and ARCHIVED ON THE INTERNET. Basically, just like the BBC shows, you will be able to listen live and to listen back to it for one week after broadcast at www.1287am.com.

How do I listen back to the show?: (This is really easier than it sounds!) Go to www.1287am.com. From there click 'schedule' in the column on the left hand side. A new page will load. Now to Tuesday and click on whatever the name of the show is that is listed as being on at 10pm. This should hopefully say 'Cool as Folk' but the website isn't updated as much as I'd like, and at the moment says 'Vicious Old Men'! The click 'Listen to Tuesday's show at 10pm'. This should now play. As I said, it's much easier than it sounds, and if you have any problems at all please feel free to eamil me at [e-mail].

If you are interested in the show it would be great if you could email me at [e-mail]. This wont put you on any mailing list or anything, you'll just get hold of me. Here's a whole load of info about me and the show to give you an idea of what I'm going to be doing (you don't have to read it all, if I've already got your interest feel free to email me straight away!):

About me: Nowadays, I'm a 21 year old Music and English student at Reading University. I've been into folk music all my life having been taken to gigs by the likes of Show of Hands, the Albion Band, the Barely Works, Edward II and Eliza Carthy by my parents from a very young age. I've grown very passionate about it, and my mates attest to the fact I could talk about it for hours! The radio show is a great chance for me to share my love of this music, both with fellow folkies and hopefully a few converts.

The Music: I'm either a traitor to the cause or a folk traditionalist depending who you talk to! I am all for the continued evolution of folk music, and think the pioneering work of people such as Shooglenifty , Whapweasel, Martyn Bennett and Eliza Carthy (and Jim Moray in principal if not always in results!) has brought a brilliant new perspective to the music without undermining its roots. On the other hand this doesn't mean we should forget the amazing power that one accapella voice can have, telling a superb story. It might not always be as accessible as the fusion work but that doesn't mean it's not worth persevering with!

You may notice that I've said British folk music, something I've already got into much heated debate with Robin Morton at Temple Records about! Basically I think it is very easy for our own cultural music to be overshadowed by Irish, American and world music. Much as I enjoy a lot of it, it doesn't half get on my nerves when people assume all folk music is Irish. Only the other day at Sidmouth, I heard a mother walking past Whapweasel playing a set at the Anchor and knowledgably telling her daughter, "That's Irish music"! And if I open the door to American folkies it's hard to justify excluding bluegrass, country, blues, and by the same argument rock and roll! And then if I include Irish and American music, why not Scandinavian and French music, in fact why not all roots music!!! Then you end up with a world music programme! So in the interest of sticking to what I know and not ending up with a hodgepodge programme like Mike Harding's, I'm sticking to British music (although I might make the occasional exception if it's for a theme, say highlighting different versions of the same song, where one is Irish for example).

Another type of music I shall be avoiding is acoustic singer-songwriters and artists that have moved beyond folk. Much as I love artists like Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, John Martyn and Nick Drake, only a small amount of their work is actually folk derived, so I'll leave them to my more general show.

So to give you an idea, here's some artists I plan to feature on the show: The Albion Band, Martyn Bennet, Blowzabella, The Barely Works, BELLOWhead, Eliza Carthy, Martin Carthy, Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, Fernhill, Dick Gaughan, Nic Jones, Bill Jones, The Levellers, Ewan MacColl, John McCusker, Julie Murphy, Oysterband, Pentangle, Kate Rusby, Steeleye Span, Shooglenifty, Martin Simpson, Dave Swarbrick, Spiers and Boden, Richard (and Linda) Thompson, June Tabor, Norma, Lal and Mike Waterson, Whapweasel and probably loads I can't think of right now!

The format: It'll be an hour long show (immediately preceded by my more eclectic show, Random Noises, if you fancy hearing some of my wider taste!) with plenty of music and not too much chat. Every week I'll do a Floor Spot, where I highlight one artist and play three of four of their recordings to give an insight into what they do. I'm hoping to get a co-presenter, but that really depends on finding someone who wont mind me picking all the music!!! In future weeks I hope to get artists in for interviews and sessions, but I'm just working on getting it running at the mo.

Can I send you demos/records: Definitely. I'm dead keen to promote new talent and will be more than happy to give your demo a spin (as long as I think it's good enough!). The same applies for record companies and artists with a record deal: please send me your albums/singles/promos etc. I've already received a lot of stuff from Topic, Temple, Beautiful Jo, Park and Old and New Tradition, nearly all of which is guaranteed a play. Basically, it's not like I have the BBC's library to toy with, and there's plenty of artists I don't have anything by. Obviously I can't buy everything I want (especially on my current budget!) so if I don't get it, I can't play it!! Any demos /records that don't meet the genre criteria have still got a decent chance of getting a play on my general show, Random Noises. Can I send you gig/festival dates: Yup. Can't guarantee I'll read them out, but there's a afir chance, especially if they are gigs near Reading. I might even use them as a reason to play something by the artist. Again, send any info to [e-mail].
