Great news from Martyn! If the money's all in, can the release be far behind? Yippee--and thanks again Vikki and ElG for pulling us all together behind the Mudcat sponsorship of one of Jean's tracks.
Vikki or Jean, can you keep us posted, either here or in a new thread, on a release date? Happy holidays, everyone! Kathy

Here is an excerpt of a message I received from Martyn Wyndham-Read today:

"If you could please pass on, my and Dan's, warmest thanks to all the Jolly Mudcaters who contributed so much for Jean Ritchie's track, it is so very much appreciated... I am glad to be able to tell you that now we have all tracks taken up..."

So... something to feel good about!

OK, folks – all the checks (and a cheque as well!) are finally in, and cheques have been sent to the Wyndham-Reads,
so here's the grand total raised:

$607 – which is £315 (by my calculations, using today's exchange rate, & ignoring loose change)

So (drum roll please!)...
Here is the Mudcat-SongLinks II Roll of Hono(u)r:

*El G belongs on this list not only for all his support & assistance in facilitating PayPal contributions, but also due to sponsoring an English track all on his own!

Anyone else interested in joining such fine company can still do so – just visit El Greko's PayPal link, or PM me for an address to send a check to, and you, too, can see your own moniker appended to this glorious list!

Again, MANY THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HAS HELPED! Martyn & Danni are delighted by this show of support.

A few days ago, someone PMed me to ask if it's "too late to contribute". It's just occurred to me that it might be a good idea to share my response here as well...

No, it's not too late to contribute. Even though we have reached our goal, Song Links can certainly make very good use of any additional money we can raise (there are still at least a dozen un-sponsored American tracks!), so I see no reason why you shouldn't send whatever you wish to send, and your name will be included with everyone else's when I post the list of names of those who have contributed.

This also might be a good time to remind everyone of my original intent in starting this thread: if you can think of a US folk club/venue/organization that might be willing & able to sponsor a track, please mention it to them. (If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, let me know and I'll contact them myself.)

While I don't wish to be a wet blanket – I'm pleased and proud of our Mudcat response – I'm can't help being a little disappointed with the general lack of US support for this project. Last I heard, there are only THREE US sponsors (including us)! When you think of how large our country is – especially compared to Britain – it's a bit sad that SO little support has come from the US.

I'm about out of ideas on how to get the word out to potentially sympathetic ears, but if anything occurs to anyone else, please do let me know!

And I hope those who have contributed feel very good about what we've managed to accomplish here.

Sorry not to have checked in on this thread for the last couple of days – been too busy to spare any time for Mudcat 'til tonight.

Jacqui – apologies for not letting you know your cheque arrived a couple of days ago – meant to PM you, but... (please see above)

El G, thanks for talking to Martyn & Dani, and for coming up with such an elegant dedication (who'd a thunk he'd be so good with words? ;>) ); I also like Kath's suggestions.

Jean – we're honored to sponsor you! Like your idea of a second signed CD to be auctioned off with proceeds to Song Links – I guess it remains to be seen if the Mudcat powers-that-be approve...

If the Song Links 2 UK launch party is anything like the first Song Links launch, we'll all be autographing lots of copies at the end of the concert, for folks who've bought them.

So how many are we going to do for Mudcat? We might as well do a whole batch while we're at it!

In Martyn's first letter, he wrote that this project, even before any sponsorship, is always short of funds, and that its "staff" are knowingly taking a risk.

Could Mudcat therefore auction a second autographed CD, with the proceeds going to Song Links? Or is this a bad idea? (Gee, I hope my
grammer, spelling and sentence structure are all correct, Kathy!)
Now this is a hard one: should there be a period after )?

El Greko,
Editing by committee is a most dangerous enterprise, but I'd suggest two things (if we can squeeze them in). One is to include the URL of Mudcat for those who want to find it. A second is to say that Jean is, herself, one of Mudcat's members. Just a suggestion, for what it's worth.
THANKS!

Just spoke with Dani W-R. She thinks that it should be possible to get a copy of SLII signed by all artists, but after the launch in April (in fact they might do 2 or 3 copies anyway, it was a good idea).

Also: Dani & Martyn are OK with Mudcatters procuring copies of SLI at trade prices, also through Dick Greehaus. I will now put Dick in touch with Fellside Records, so that arrangements can be put in place. No doubt Dick will later let us all know how to go about ordering SLI and SLII through him, what the cost will be etc.

BUT NOW, AN IMPORTANT ITEM: The dedication - in the booklet accompanying the album there will be a couple of lines from the sponsor of each of the tracks. Not enough space to include individual names, as we'd said, but some appropriate words should be agreed between us. I suggest the following, and please offer your comments back:

"It is an honour and a pleasure for the American members of the Mudcat Cafe, itself an international folk music forum, to sponsor the Mayday Carol sung by Jean Ritchie, one of the prime exponents of traditional song in the US."

Good enough? Shoot!

The Cuckoo was already "spoken for", Jean; anyway, there is a sort of link in sponsoring the Mayday Carol, as the UK version is recorded by two other Catters (Mary Humphries & Anahata, aka treewind); and I'm sponsoring that one! So both versions of the Mayday Carol will involve, and be sponsored by, Mudcatters!

And it starts with the letter M (talk about tenuous links!)

Dick Greenhaus has kindly agreed to procure copies of SLII at trade prices and pass the saving on to Mudcatters (+p&p).

What an honor that Mudcatters are sponsoring one of my tracks... I found this thread only recently, and have been tuning in every day or so,to see if it's really happening. Now if I could only sing! (my '03 flu shot has worn off and I'm slowly recuperating from a bout of the flu, with lots of coughing, teary eyes and scratchy voice). I promise to try in about a week. Maybe a good cause for Mudcat to take up (after this one) would be to find a source for flu-shots for aging folksingers?

Anyway- thanks so much to all of you. Actually you could have had a choice, as I'm doing two tracks- May Day Carol and The Cuckoo.

Joy and blessings,   Jean

Well – if folks like the idea of a signed CD to auction – one way to deal with it would be to send one of the CDs (or CD leaflets) around to all the US performers, along with a list of addresses to send it on to – a bit like a chain letter (only not with the ever-expanding pyramid-type aspect). People could cross their names off as they sign it & send it along to one of the names still on the list. Since the CDs don't come out until April or so, there should be more than enought time to accomplish this.

Aside from El Greko, still haven't really heard from people who are not on the CD... any other feedback?

There will be logistical problems with getting autographs on a CD. I am sure that most of the artists would be delighted to do this, but all the tracks were recorded independently and in two countries.
The UK launch would get most of the UK artists together, so we could get our end of the CD signed then. I don't think there is a US launch where the US artists are gathering, so that is a rather tricky problem for someone to come up with a solution to!

Jean Richie's track is locked in - no worries.

The simplest way for Mudcatters to get copies would be for Dick Greenhaus to get them at trade prices and pass on the benefit (plus p&p). Would he be willing to do that? I will ask him

Well done everybody - an effort to be proud of and a fine example of the power of the internet generally and Mudcat specifically.

I'll be very happy to sign a special Mudcat copy of the CD, and I'm sure Mary will too.

When organizations like folk clubs sponsor a Song Links Track, one of the perks is being able to buy copies of the album at trade price. Will somebody representing Mudcat be able to do that? I'd guess Dick Greenhaus gets trade prices anyway, so I don't know if there's scope for further benefit.

Hi Kath... done! In a way, this is unexpectedly good news – as I assumed you had already contributed (via El Greko's PayPal link).

This takes us up to $530... don't know what Jacqui's sending, but I suspect it will take us up to our goal – and possibly even over...

SO – I think we've made it, folks!

Should we ask a joeclone to change our title to something triumphant? Or perhaps that should wait until all the checks have actually reached their destination(s). When we've received everything, I'll post here again, with an official list of contributing Mudcatters.

By the way, am looking for feedback concerning the idea (above, 2 Nov 04) of auctioning off a Song Links II with artists' signatures & donating the proceeds to Mudcat – if folks don't think there would be much interest, I'll leave it...

Again, MANY THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO'S HELPED!

Good news, folks – we're getting close!

El Greko tells me he's had 7 contributors and a total of $180.

I've had 5 contributors (a couple of them unusually generous) with a total of $300 (and there may or may not be another check still to come).

That takes us up to $480... spitting distance, folks!

As El Greko puts it: "...we are only 3 contributors short...(assuming $25 each)"

Unfortunately, the dollar seems to be moving down pretty quickly at the moment, so I'm hoping we can wind this up before the amount we need to raise goes up substantially!

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed thus far, and special thanks to those who have been particularly helpful and supportive – you know who you are.

Hi open mike,

What it says on their website is: "You also have the opportunity to buy the CD at trade price". It's not clear whether they meant just one CD or a bunch, but given that most of the Song Links I sponsors were organizations, it seems unlikely they meant just one CD. I believe that George did check with Martyn & Danni on this, and that they did say that Mudcat contributors could buy the CD at the trade price. Note: trade price is not "at cost" – it's the wholesale, direct-from-the-record-company price, which they do make some money on. So it's like Mudcat becomes another "distributor" for them to sell the CD – which should be a win-win situation.

A thought has just occurred to me: perhaps we could see if they would be willing to get all the performers (or as many as is actually possible) to autograph a CD, which could then be put in the Mudcat auction...

If people like that idea, I'll ask them about it.

the new thread title is more accurate, and enticing, thanks!

and Wind Words form Wyoming is a successful project...
and sociciting advanced pre-payment is a good lway to
jump start a project, and generate interest and support.
(I have my copy and am glad i do!!)

and by the way, pay pal is not restricted to credit cards..
you can use a bank account, in fact there is an advantage
to setting up your pay pal account thru a checking acc't
rather than a credit card.

how much, by the way is the cost of the c.d. for those
who donate to sponsor a track? seems like it it will take
a dozen ofr two folks to make up the track amouont of 300-
500 $ , then if each person gets a substantial discout
(at cost? is that like $3-5?) that may not be the way the
deal was intended to go...seems like the original plan may
have been to offer ONE person a discount if they pitch in
for one track??

I could put a link to this thread up in the yellow box at the top of the Forum Menu, but I'm reluctant to. That space is for more-or-less permanent messages, not set up for easy editing or removal - and it's for things that are necessary to the operation of Mudcat. While I think the Songlines project is a very good cause, I don't think it's quite at the level of importance of the Mudcat CD's, and I think it's more temporary in nature. Let's hold off for now, since the thread seems to be continuing on its own.
But as a guilt offering for saying "no," I'll send a check to Beardedbruce.

I've had a thought – would like to know what you others think of it:

If there are other Mudcatters you know well – and think might be interested in helping support Songlinks II but perhaps haven't spotted this thread yet – maybe each of us could PM another Mudcatter or two and suggest they check out this thread (but ONLY IF you know them well enough to know they wouldn't mind...). The rest would be up to them...

Or would that be a tad overzealous?

refresh...

And many thanks to artbrooks for keeping an eye on the thread – & refreshing it when I hadn't got 'round to it yet; to Janie & Kath for their financial contributions; and to Kath for the additional information and support in the post above.

Cheers! We'll get there yet...

I doubt that anyone's inclined to believe our resident naysayer Garg or our a-nonny-mouse Guest, but just in case you have questions this is absolutely on the up-and-up. SongLinks II is a fabulous two-CD set that is being produced as a labor of love by my dear friend Martyn and his wife Danni Wyndham-Read, two of the most honest and best people you'll ever hope to meet. Martyn has a long catalog of solo recordings to his credit, made over decades of work. He has numerous collaborative CDs. And now he is undertaking Volume II of the SongLinks project. SongLinks I is one of the best-conceived and executed projects I've ever seen, with a set of liner notes (a book, really) to die for. A Mudcat-sponsored track of our own Jean Ritchie (KyTrad)on SongLinks II would be just perfect. Count me absolutely in. If I could sponsor a whole track by myself, I would, but bb's idea to have many hands make light work of the fundraising is a great one. Thanks, one and all, but especially to those who've organized a way to collect the $$.
