Subject: BS: Families of Minor PG Moms....!! From: Sorcha Date: 18 Oct 04 - 09:27 PM OK, OK...I'm watching The Learning Channel, but this is another one that has me REALLY up in arms....there is this 15 yr old laboring mother to be in MAJOR pain...and her family won't allow her any pain meds or an epidural....because PAIN is the Wages of Sin and if she is in PAIN she won't get pregnant again....just how stupid is that???? Sure, I was in some pain when delivering my kids, but as soon as they put the babe in my arms I forgot it. If we women didn't forget, there would never be anymore babies! This is an Evil Gran IMNSHO. |

Subject: RE: BS: Families of Minor PG Moms....!! From: mg Date: 19 Oct 04 - 12:24 AM Sooner or later we will come back to the realization that we are fighting nature, and have to fight hard, or every 15 year old on the planet will be pregnant...and I think the only way to prevent this is not through education, although that is a good idea, and not through religion or morality, also good ideas, but plain old-fashioned chaperoning them and never, ever let them be alone with the opposite sex..now you can't do that forever, but you certainly should try through the age of 15 or so..try for 16...and never believe that library story. mg |

Subject: RE: BS: Families of Minor PG Moms....!! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 19 Oct 04 - 03:49 AM 15? Hey , that's pretty old... the youngest mother in the world (in South America) is probably nursing her 3yr old on her lap now, as she hits her teens.... she was 10 when she gave birth. Seems to me that not only grandma, but the rest of that society is at fault, for not teaching this girl (and presumably any sexual partners) decent birth control, self control or the basics of human biology. And Grandma better brush up on her Bible studies too... the wages of sin is Death, not pain. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Families of Minor PG Moms....!! From: Rapparee Date: 19 Oct 04 - 09:31 AM Probably doesn't believe in contraception, either. What do you suppose she thinks young people think about all the time? The Seven Sorrows of Mary? |

Subject: RE: BS: Families of Minor PG Moms....!! From: GUEST,Mingulay Date: 19 Oct 04 - 10:19 AM Maybe it's the Immaculate Contraception! She obviously doesn't live in a condom-inium. Yes I know, bad jokes for a serious situation, but I don't think anything can save these people. They have the right to procreate and by God that's what they're going to do whatever it might cost the rest of us. Realistically this is purely a US question viz-a-vis the painkiller as it would not come up with the NHS. |

Subject: RE: BS: Families of Minor PG Moms....!! From: GUEST,SueB Date: 19 Oct 04 - 02:08 PM Mary's right, it's hard to fight biology. But for those moments when they escape the chaperone, it helps if they have been well-informed and feel empowered to make their own choices about how they want their lives to be. (Pretty much antithetical to a religious agenda.) Also, preventive birth control might be a good idea for some. And where the hell are the responsible medical professionals while this child is laboring in pain? And what about the boy that knocked that girl up? Is he in another room being whipped with a belt every time the girl has a contraction? What are the wages of *his* sin? |

Subject: RE: BS: Families of Minor PG Moms....!! From: Sorcha Date: 19 Oct 04 - 02:32 PM Well, the nurse finally did get fed up and ran the family out. Gave the girl an eipdural because the girl wanted it. If the family had complained, the nurse could have gotten fired. Family had sense enough not to complain. |

Subject: RE: BS: Families of Minor PG Moms....!! From: Stilly River Sage Date: 19 Oct 04 - 02:43 PM In the "for what it's worth" department, the girl probably didn't have any tutoring in pain control--breathing, etc. I didn't use an epidural--you won't get near my spine with a needle, thank you very much. The only pain control was a pudendal block, a long needle inserted on either side that numbs the nerves and works specifically for things like the episiotomy. (Good thing my hard labor didn't last long. 3 hours for the first, 1.5 hours for the second.) Since technically the young mother is the patient, the family could be chased out. And the patient's wishes respected. SRS |
