Well, here we are, folks. Just two days from the election and it's looking much like Redneck America will be the difference. Yup, I've predicted that any close election will be stealable by Diebold, E.S.S. and the rest of the Bush crooks but, really, really most of the credit goes to the South...

The only problem I have with this is that most of these folks who will probably give America another four years of the current batch of crook think that the three branches of government are NASCAR, Budweiser and Country Music, Yup, that's about all they know for sure...

So, yeah, looks like them Yankees didn't win afterall. And I ain't talkin' baeball here...

I bet they wish the South had been allowed to secede. The same way people back here are pretty glad the American Colonies succeeded in getting clean away back back in the 18th century.

Oh wait! Ahhhh, firget it. Them folks would have slaves changin' the tires during the pit stops...

Who knows? Perhaps before too long they'd have abolished slavery the same way Brazil did, and become a racially mixed-up country like Brazil, and escaped a century and more of institutionalised racism.

Think of that - an English speaking Brazil. Maybe playing real football, and winning the World Cup from time to time...

Real football has pointy ends, McG, an' if you knew how them folks is, an' I do since I spent way too uch of my life living samongst them, then I reckon yer right aabout abolishin' slavery jus' wrong on the timin'... The way me and the Wes Ginny Slide Rule got it figgured, if the South had won then the CSA (Confederat Sates of America) would abolish slavery 'round, oh, 2057...

Well, you should know. But I have a kind of suspicion that the Civil War branded racism into the mentality of a lot of people in the South in a way that didn't happen in many other places in the world.

And I apologize fir it, Janie 'cause, having lived in Richmond 'bout half my life, I certainly know that there a re a lot of cool folks who have intellectual interests other than NASCAR. Problem is, there ain't enough in porportion to them folks who ain't too enlightened. I don't mean to sterotype no one but it is the South that keeps folks like Bush in office... My sons in laws are perfect examples. Nice guys. All 3 of 'um. Don't know nuthin' about whats going on in this country... But know who's leading in NASCAR points... All three of 'um college eductaed (in the South) and all they wanta talk about is sports...

Can't deny that country these days is 1) mainly 70's rock under another name and 2) infested by, if not dominated by, Bushites. (Toby Keith leaps to mind).

But even today there's some fun stuff

"Girls Lie Too"
"Work In Progress"
"Celebrity"

some others

I can't even get too upset about "Redneck Woman"---let'em yell, why not?---Hell yeah!

The Redskins lost the game yesterday. That's important. Since 1936, no incumbant president has won the election after the Redskins have lost their last home game before the election. And every incumbant (president or vice president) has won after the Redskins have won their last home game before the election.

Well, Ron, yeah there's some cute songs but consider this. When the Dixie Chicks said somethin' negative about about Bush, look what happened to them...

The problem as I see it is that ClearChannel has folks so scared to go against the grain that everyone in country music has just knuckled under to the pressure wave the flag and sing the company fight song...

CarolC,

Yeah, if losin' the game would get rid of Bush, heck, that would be fine... Probelm is that the Redskins lost becasue they were cheated. Al Gore lost because he was cheated and, I'm afraid that John Kerry will also lose because he will be cheated.

We're not talking about a sophisticated modern democracy here. We're talkin' about a system so corrupt that 3rd World countries are sending in poll observers. Now what does that tell ya'?

Look people, your electoral college system makes the whole thing a bad joke anyway. How can you even take it seriously? And what can you possibly do about it? Not much, I figure, because the rich own the media and the media supplies the public with virtually all the information that forms public opinion. So the media will keep the public distracted with sound bites and scare stories, and the game will go on.

Your public would have to so massively lose faith in both the Democrats AND the Republicans that they would no longer be able to govern before this mess could possibly be cleaned up.

As for the "redneck" thing, well, I think the general fact is that country and small town people tend more to vote Republican while big city people tend more to vote Democrat...and that's how you'll see it go. The biggest urban areas are in California and the Northeast, where the Democrats are expected to win.

If the scare tactics practiced by the Bush administration succeed, he will be re-elected, and encouraged in his insanity. If not, Kerry will be elected, and you will still have a bloody, intractable, and criminal occupation of Iraq by USA and British forces...and maybe another war a little way down the road too, with some other small country like Syria or Iran. You're up shit creek, folks, because you are ruled by a militaristic oligarchy that owns both major parties.

Bobert et. al.,

No need to apologize. Just be aware that stereotyping is never accurate or useful. I agree with Little Hawk. It is the rural nature of the South, not the Southernness of the south that makes it conservative.

Latest polls show Bush up by 21 points in Oklahoma and by 45 points in Utah. Neither of these states was in the Confederacy.

I've got to chime in against this stereotyping,
alot of the folks I know who are rural types north of the Mason-Dixon vote Republican. Mention the name BIll or Hillary Clinton in these areas and you'll get an earful.

Stop trying to find someone to blame, Go vote! Get all of your friends and relatives to vote! Half the problem of the democratic party is that the people who would vote democrat don't vote!

It's not about the Confederacy, pdq...it's about rural and small-town America as opposed to metropolitan-center America. I can remember well when I lived in New York State. The Big Apple was a Democratic stronghold. As for the rest...all those little towns, green hills, and moderate-sized places...they were solidly Republican territory. If a chimpanzee or a rabid dog had run on the Republican ticket in New York State he would have still won in those little towns around where I lived. "Thus are the sins of the fathers passed on to the sons, yea, even unto the seventh generation". :-) Or the seventeenth. Whatever.

"and the sins of the fathers shall be visited upon the heads of the sons, yea, even unto the 3rd and fourth generations of them who hate me.."...I think...(from memory...let me go check) ok, checked...it should be them "that" hate me...

The South is quite a situation. Lots of good things there, but some some very strange attitudes....and there are several 'souths'...Mississippi & Alabama and parts of Georgia and Texas are different from the Carolinas and Arkansas and Tennessee in many ways, and Louisiana is different yet...and Oklahoma is sorta half south and half west, and half MID-west.

I do know that I could simply never live in most of the south, as I would get my mouthy self beat up, or maybe shot withing a few months...or explode trying to keep my mouth shut! The ARE places in N. Carolina or maybe Florida I could tolerate...but Florida is not exactly Dixie, huh?

It's funny, but I can remember when a lot of the South used to vote Democratic, but the issues have polarized the country somethin' fierce!

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: BS: The South will rise again....
From: Bobert

Now, I ain't puttin' all the blame on the South. Seems there is this band of mid western states where folks seem as as unenlightened and really couldn't care less to have any new ideas around them.

But my point was more to the orignial 13 Confederate states which, with the lone exception of Florida, make up the Southern Stategy states where folks, like their mid western counterparts ain't interested in any new ideas unless it makes a car go faster or looks real cool in the home enetertainment room.

Now, Janie, I ain't tryin' to sterotype no one and remember that all 3 of my college educated son in laws live in Charlotte, but there is enought commonality of thought that the Republican Party, like LHawk said, could run a chimpamzee as president andf these states would go Republican...

So, with that edge, the South is in prime position to leverage its power and hasn't been shy about what they want: Roe v. Wade gone, stem cell reserach gone, Ten Commandments in court rooms, Prayer in every school, guns, guns and more guns...

They don't care about issues like big governemnt as long as they don't have to pay for it... Just say "Charge it"... Heck, if they cares about big governemnt then Bush would have to work for their electorial votes. They really don't care much about the war in Iraq either just so long as those emotional issues are thought to be Republican non-negotiable planks...

So when I say the South will Rise agian, I really mean it. They have been responsible for electing every Republican president for the last 40 years and also have packed both legislative cahmbers with Repubs.

That is one heck of alot of clout.

Bobert

The thing about the South is certainly noticeable when you see it on an election map...but what about "cowboy country" out West? It appears to me that Bush has the cowboy vote pretty much sewn up. Looks like the John Wayne mentality still rules anwhar whar ya got big skies, small towns, and pick-up trucks with gun racks. Yee-haw! We gonna ee-lect ourselves a good ol' boy from Texas and go kick raghead ass! "Shoot first, think later."

It kind of works that way in Canada too. The most gungho conservative region of the country is Alberta...THE cowboy province in this here confederation. Them Alberta cowboys would rather wrassle with a skunk than vote fer a liberal! They would privatize sunlight if they could figure out how to corral it. And what is their primary source of wealth? Oil. Alberta has lots of it. Albertans are perenially so frustrated with the seemingly natural liberal tendencies of most of the rest of Canada that they would like to secede and join the USA. If they did, you'd have one more set of electoral votes for Bush, I guess. As for the rest of this country, forget it. Bush is a dead duck up here.

I have to confess I am pretty much a "yellow dog" Democrat i.e. I'd vote for a yellow dog as long as it was running as a Democrat. Well, almost. Don't know but what that makes me any different from a Replubican voting for a chimpanzee.

Like 95% of most social workers I am definitely a liberal, and the Democratic party tends to be more liberal than conservative. I am also from West Virginia, which is fairly southern, but is rural, unionized industrial as opposed to rural agricultural or un-unionized mills, and therefore of a more liberal bent than other parts of the south. I would forsake the party if the party completely forsook liberals, but my choice of parties is really more about upbringing (indoctrination)than thinking, and I believe that is true for many people. I like to say my daddy raised me to be a good Democrat, a Baptist and a Reds fan. I managed to shake the last two, but the ol' elephant has stuck in my psyche.

Thomas Jefferson said something to the effect that good men with the same information can disagree. While I personally can not make sense of why anyone would vote for Bush within the context of my own paradigm, I don't have a patent on proper paradigms, and am not comfortable assuming that anyone who disagrees with my political opinions is unthinking, uncaring or ignorant.

That's a very perceptive post, Janie. I congratulate you on recognizing your own mental conditioning, inherited from your upbringing. To do that is a key step on the road to enlightenment. When you can see your own cultural conditioning, and recognize your connection with other people...because they too have been similarly conditioned...then you begin to develop brotherhood and compassion for others even if they do disagree with you.

I have reached the point where I don't actually believe in any of the political parties anymore, I think they're all phony...but I'm still basically a natural liberal, and that's because I grew up in a basically liberal family. It does not fool me into thinking that I am inherently superior as a human being to those who are natural conservatives, as much as I may deplore their political judgement at times on certain issues... :-)

I believe in the quality of individuals, on a scale from rabidly or secretly destructive up to widely constructive and innovative.
It has little to do with parties or planks, which are pretty situational. But if you can find someone of both intelligence and responsibility with some management skill, support him all the way.

John Kerry is an excellent example of someone at the top of that scale.
