Subject: RE: Tune Req: Dear Mrs Roosevelt (Woody Guthrie) From: Mark Ross Date: 06 Jan 05 - 03:43 PM The best collection of Woody's songs is in the NEARLY COMPLETE WOODY GUTHRIE SONGBOOK published in '62 or '63. It's been out of print since then and the last time I talked to Nora Guthrie she told me that their are too many mistakes in it to reprint it(which I think is a shame). I just found a copy on e-bay for 20 pounds in th UK, and I'm e-mailing the guy who owns it to see how much the shipping will be. By the way, Dylan recorded MRS ROOSEVELT on the Guthrie Memorial albums in '68. Mark Ross |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Dear Mrs Roosevelt (Woody Guthrie) From: Big Mick Date: 05 Jan 05 - 05:14 PM Mine doesn't have a copyright date, but it is edited by Judy Bell and Nora Guthrie. It is loaded with Woody's drawings and photo's. Mick |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Dear Mrs Roosevelt (Woody Guthrie) From: emjay Date: 05 Jan 05 - 04:44 PM The Woody Guthrie Songbook I have, copyright 1976, edited by Harold Leventhal and Marjorie Guthrie -- designed by Will Hopkins -- does have the song in it, and a lot of others, good ones, of course. It also has great photographs, notes, stories. It should be reprinted! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Dear Mrs Roosevelt (Woody Guthrie) From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Jan 05 - 02:41 PM Seems to me I've heard another song that is very similar to this (on a different subject) that uses the same tune and the phrase "we sure was lucky" instead of "the world was lucky." Can anybody clarify my partial recollection, or am I singing through my hat on this? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Dear Mrs Roosevelt (Woody Guthrie) From: Big Jim from Jackson Date: 05 Jan 05 - 11:07 AM You will find a very nice recording of the song on an album titiled "Woodeye" by the Joel Rafael Band. The band perform in Oklahoma every year at the Woodie Guthrie Festival. They are a California group. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Dear Mrs Roosevelt (Woody Guthrie) From: Big Mick Date: 05 Jan 05 - 07:25 AM I just spent some time cruising the Woody Guthrie Foundation website listed above and couldn't fing it, so I popped an email off to the archivist to ask for background data, tune, etc, so we can compare it to what is in the DT. When I made the link above I didn't check out whether it was listed in the booke. I also checked an older copy of The Woody Guthrie Songbook in my collection. Not there either. I also took a look at the Sing Out Collected Reprints (both volumes). I will let you know what I get back from the archives of the WGF. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Dear Mrs Roosevelt (Woody Guthrie) From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Jan 05 - 05:10 AM I can't find the song in the current Hal Leonard Woody Guthrie Songbook that Mick linked to, and I doubt that it's available in any source that's still in print. The world needs a good Woody songbook, I think. I e-mailed a scan to Paul from an out-of-print book. Is it an original tune, or did Woody get it from another song? -Joe Offer- Click for lyrics in the Digital TraditionClick to play |

Subject: RE: Dear Mrs Roosevelt From: emjay Date: 04 Jan 05 - 04:31 PM The words and music are in the Woody Guthrie Songbook, copyright 1976. I don't recognize the tune and there is nothing in there that I could find naming its source. If you don't get it from anyone else, PM me. |
