Hello

I hope you can help me, many moons ago when I was in National School in Co. Sligo, I learned a song called (I think!) "mo theaghlach" but I can't remeber the words of it, all I know is it went something like this:

Nuair a sheolaim (shiúilann???) mo chos chun mo theaghlach beag grin....

Do you know this song and the words? I've tried many other sources but to no avail.

IF it is from a Scottish song, I'd like to see the original. I haven't come across the title in any of my travels in Scottish Gaelic songbooks yet. Could be a very old one, I wonder.

I got this song is from a small book 'Abar Amhrán,' with no tune or footnotes.

If you Google the song you will find on MSN - Music a pay-for-download mp3 by Deirdre Ni
Fhlionn. I don't have access to MSN - Music being on a Mac, so I don't know how good it is.
There is some further stuff there about Deirdre Ni Fhlionn too, including an old Mudcat query.

Calum Kennedy sang "My Ain House" (pronounced Hoose) to this melody. The Gàidhlig verses are on Mudcat already: Mo Dhachaidh

Breathnach's book "ár gCeol Feinig" (1920) gives the author of the words as Diarmuid Mac Coitir of Ballingeary, but says nothing about the air.

Lyrics by Seoirse Ó Broin (1921-2005). It is clear from the chorus that this song would go to the air of a Scottish Gaelic song, which has already been translated into Irish Gaelic and Scots English (, Mo dhachaidh, Mo Theaghlach, My Ain Hoose) and is probably published on Mudcat. I was never sure if Theaghlaigh meant family or small house.

I learned this song in a primary school of 43 kids in total on the kilkenny tipperary border and it was the only cheerful one we learned - so that's why it always stuck with me!

I was looking to see if the English language version, My Ain Hoose, lyrics are on Mudcat. Although I didnt find them, there is a 2010 message from Guest, Isabelle on the Scottish Wedding Songs discussion thread: "Apparently it's a very old air appearing in Patrick MacDonald's Collection of Highland Aire 1784. Malcolm Macfarlane wrote new lyrics in Gaelic, which were later translated by Alexander Stewart into "My ain Hoose", which is in various collections (incl. the Scottish Orpheus vol. 3)."
