OH, I get it.

So, when someone says, "My cup runneth over", it means they're trying to fit a C in an A. NOW it makes sense. So, like, if someone was tryin' to fit an X in a B, then that person's cup would be runnething overing all around the landsacpe, right? This is fortuitous, because not only does it explain one of life's mysteries to me, but it also explains why I flunked algebra all through school. You can put X into Y, but ya can't put Y into X. This is another aspect of the dysmorphic attitudes of society. It probably bridges (no pun intended) two things - one the infantile association of breasts with (feeding) pleasure, and the other the Victorian (maybe earlier)fixation on virgins (therefore not gravity-dependent breasts) as an insurance to avoid cuckoo syndrome and therefore greater likelihood of gene survival. The latter leads also to depilation. IMHO.

I think the government is involved at the moment because of the differing opinions of the industry and women who have had the gel implants done or wish to. It is not really a case of the government meddling. The Feds had shut down the gel implants because of complaints and are now re-reviewing the issue since the industry says it has come up with a safer and more reliable product. At the same time, there are women who are testifying with their horror stories and on the other side of the aisle are women who have had great results and are saying that the alternative - saline solution - that had been approved by the Feds is not as good or safe as the prohibited gel.

I don't have an opinion yea or nay in the case of vanity augmentations, but I do know that for women who have had breast cancer and want to equalize the two sides and for women who NEED breast reductions it can be a sanity saver.

Now I totally concur with folks who are talking about what values society has placed on them or the perceptions etc. I am much more interested in the person within the body than what it looks like. Cosmetic dentistry is my "cross to bear" having people coming in daily who want white teeth etc when they are not at all interested in dealing with the dental disease they have. It is pretty much a job of reeducating though. I think the bog boob phase is running its course though as my daughters were talking to Jayne saying that people who get these giant boobs are mostly Nascar fand nowadays. I don't know exactly what that means but I thought it was a great menatl image! grin

Bruce, as a point of interest, you wouldn't go from a 34A to a 38C, you would go from a 34A to a 34C. The letter is the size of the breast, so if it gets bigger, the letter goes higher up the alphabet. The number, while not actually the circumference of the rib cage immediately under the breasts, is representative of the part of the bra that has to go around the ribs to stabilize the cups.

Don't ask me, I come from a family where several members have had to fight for a breast REDUCTION on the NHS. Successfully in 3 out of 4 cases. Thinking about it myself after I breastfeed my last baby.

There are circumstance under which 'plastic surgery' should be considered, both for men and women. However, all is not as clear as it may seem. TV and commercials are insidious. They have managed to change the way we perceive ourselves. People can do what they want, but at least in Canada, I feel that folks shouldn't use public health care to turn 34As into 38Cs just because they saw Baywatch and have decided they require more breast to be like Pam.

In my youth I went with a gal who was very big busted. The agonies she suffered in school--from grade 7 on--were incredible. She was a lovely, kind and intelligent girl, but the teasing she received was ugly and damaging. It was unfair and quite cruel. I hope I never judge a gal on the size of her breasts or the sag of her ass. Lord knows I'm no treat for the eyes, and if I was a woman, I would hate to think people judged me in that manner.

We get tempted, being so full of ideas, to drum up a few on any subject. SRS' idea about women being inundated with false values by commercial interests is one I share, but the other side of the coin is, we all learn in our own ways how to parse the genuine from the bogus, and the important from the trivial. It's nopt our call tomake what another judges as important or relevant.

I usually elect to remain silent in a sort of benevolent disagreement on such items! :D

Of course in discussions relating to the commons -- politics and law and Mudcat free-for-alls -- why, open the floodgates and let loose the dogs of rhetoric! :D

Let me pose a question here. What difference does it make? If a woman wants to have plastic surgery to have larger breasts, or to have a facelift, or whatever cosmetic changes she decides to make, what difference does it make? (or a man for that matter)

Is she hurting anyone with this decision? Is the surgeon doing something wrong here? I am trying to see just what the point is. If someone wants to have larger breasts and feels it will help her feel better about herself, how is this really any different from cosmetics, hair color, make up, what clothes she wears, etc?

I read a bumper sticker once that I really thought was great. It said, "If you don't believe in abortion, don't have one." This is sort of the same concept. I probably have opened another kettle of fish here, but really, in the big picture, shouldn't people be able to do what they want without other people passing judgment on whether it is wrong or right? Just asking.

Specifically, there would be myself and a lady writing, well, sexist/chauvenistic-typed articles, all meant as fun-in-cheek... though, the editor confided in me that he would hope I could generate a little bit of nasty (e)mail from the "Femi-nazi's" (his word, not mine)... the mag never got off the ground, mostly due to his organizational problems, but I ended up writing a few similar columns (including one on Monica Lewinsky vs HillBillary, and one on Urinal Etiquette)

And yes, all of it is tongue and cheek

I can see at least one rationale for surgical breast augmentation; if a woman has lost one or both to *&%# cancer, and she personally can't handle the change in her appearance, then by all means let her make her decision as to what to do about it. But even thinking in the shallowist way, as a male who certainly enjoys the look of those things, in whatever size: the typical implanted set is a grotesquely shaped parody of something lovely.

Think about it fellas, you know it's true. Walk into a library or research lab or any typically intelligent area, and check out the female workers (like you don't already). Make an observation. Now go to a spot that is less MENSA intensive, like a retail purse store or fast food restaurant. Make a similar observation. I have completed extensive research on this (spending almost an entire lunch hour) and have discovered that, in fact, IQ levels seem to be inversely proportional to bra size. Not in every case, mind you, but still a high enough majority to make a difference.

Personally, I have always thought that this developed through the stereotyping of females during their school years. The big boobers flirt with their teachers, the male (and some female) ones get a little excited, and then things go a little easier for them in the classroom. Okay, I gotta be fair. We all know smart chicks with nice hooters – they are definitely out there. I have a lot of well-rounded lady friends who also happen to be damn smart. But we also all know a hell of a lot of dumbass chicks with massive hogans. And last night, I think I figured out the real reason why the smart ones are more likely to have just a handful to work with.

I was on the Internet, doing my usual surfin' and chattin', when I ran into a gal I used to talk with a while back. We'll call her Sharon, though her real name is Francine Holland of Atlanta, Georgia. After a bit, our conversation went in the direction that all Internet chats between a guy and a gal will go: Toilet Seats. You know the old story, guy leaves it up, gal wants it down. If she was going to argue it from the standpoint that it looks much cleaner when it is down, I probably would have agreed that she had a good point but that I would still leave it up here in my own apartment. But Sharon took it in a whole new direction, of course…

"But you have never gotten up to pee in the middle of the night and fallen in, cuz some dumbass went and left the toilet seat up!"

If she thought that was going to be a convincing comment, she was in for a rude awakening. After a moment of recovery, I replied, "You know, it's funny… I have never EVER heard of a guy getting a wet arse due to not putting the seat down. Are you actually saying you would sit down for a piss before checking the seat… and then call the person who left the seat up the dumbass??"

She replied, "Yes!"

"C'mon," I said, "that is like saying a woman can't tell if a door is open or not before walking through:
   Man: Hmm, there is door. Door is closed. Must open before I walk through.
   Woman: Hmm, there is door. THUMP. Ouch. THUMP. Ouch. Oh, I should open it first?
That must be why God gave women breasts, so they don't break their noses!"

Taken slightly aback, Sharon said: "Okay then, what about me?" (Now mind you, I have seen a few pictures of her --very attractive, nice person, mid-sized melons. But of course, women never seem to feel that they are large enough, so she considers herself to have no chest.)

"I guess you must be more like a man then, smart enough to open the door at least half the time!"

At this point, our conversation digressed away from our current topic, but I think you get the picture. The truth has finally come out. Stupidity in women is not a direct result of large breasts, the converse is actually true. Genetics has developed a system of protection for those less-than-genius ladies to prevent broken bones and bruises…

Gotta love effective bumpers, eh?

A number of times in my life I have wanted to just put a finger under a man's chin and direct his gaze away from my boobs to make eye contact. With age this problem has lessened as gravity takes its toll, which has made me feel a lot more comfortable.

Seems to come back to media influence again - if you ain't got enough down there you ain't worth anything. Problem is - when that message gets instilled from an early age and the women lauded as being 'role models' all seem to be well endowed some girls will get the idea that they must change their natural attributes.

I really can't say what drives those with an ample sufficiency to want to go to such horrendous lengths though - that is just an aberation.
