Proper kilts do not have hems. Good tartan material is so woven that no hem is needed.

I believe that Bonny Prince Charley is said to have worn something like a modern kilt.

As a dancer and musician I am permitted to wear "comfort items" under my kilt, especially if I'm sitting on stage in the front row, but I haven't found anything that makes a kilt comfortable in the company of Maine hummingbirds, which are sometimes mistaken for mosquitos in these parts.

The modern kilt, the Phili lerg ( small cloth( Vaguely phonetically, as I do not speak Gaelic)), was devised by the British army, in the late Eighteenth century as a recruiting tool.
The Phili Mohr ( great cloth) was banned after the the Jacobite risisng of 1745, and the Army realised it could encourage the warlike Scots to join up if they were allowed to wear the kilt, but to make it more convienent, the pleats were sewn in, and the loose materiel on the top cut off. And there you have a modern kilt.

If we have a long time to fill when on stage , or otherwise showing off,
a 'lucky vounlteer' gets to remove his modern kilt, and be dressed in a great kilt...

Some advice - if your kilt is rather shorter than your "third leg" just wind it round your leg, tuck it into the top of your sock, and pretend that it's a varicose vein !

I always regard the appearance of the first kilt in my locality as the first day of Spring - far too urban for cuckoos, you see, but it is high ground and has a nasty cross wind for the unwary.

I think its a good idea. we need more men in kilts; a flash here, a protrusion there, an impromtu can can now and then.....before long the entire world would be like a highland gathering .....skirling and twirling, reciting Rabbie Burns, tossing the caber, swapping porridge recipes. Life would be heaven - a shortbread tin brought to life, a tumbler full of Talisker between everybody and stark reality.

One piece of advice though...
If you are flying to the wedding, do not wear the kilt on the plane. I know it takes up alot of room and weight in baggage, but put up with that. Airport security just love making a fuss over men in kilts. If there's a group of you, then it's fine as they realise it will take hours to do the same to everyone, but on your own, it's not so fun.

I make and wear kilts and have been accused of cross dressing.

As I make them of anything that will press into pleats I usually wear them with a long shift or smock or shirt - having once been persuaded to sell the one I was wearing I always like to be sure I can do the same again and still be decent.

If asked, though, I always say 'petticoats'

Proper wearing of the kilt

Also what do you want a kilt for, and how often will you be wearing it? They do vary somewhat.

Millitary ones- such as for a Pipe band- are a much heavier materiel, longer around and have a slightly longer drop.

Normal ones are just that, normal. 8 yard, 16 oz.

Dancers ones are often slightly lighter, as it's hot work, and collapsing from heat exaustion on stage is not good.



How often will you wear it?

If you're going to be working in a Scottish theme palace, and will have to wear it every day, then a proper heavy one is best. If you're just going to wear it occasionally, then a lighter one will do.

Costs- A standard, 8 yard, 16oz kilt will be about 300 pounds, and a full formal setup will be about 600.

A lighter 'tourist' kilt will be about 40, and an informal setup (jacobite shirt, no jacket) about 100

The right shoes

Any smart black leather shoes look good, but dance shoes are best. But buy them small (2 sizes us/uk, 3-4 european), they stretch alot.

Giok is right, Guest. Try one on and see how it looks. I wear mine just under my ample belly and it looks just fine. Besides that I'm way too big for anyone to make fun of no matter how it looks.

Please send me all your best kilt jokes. I will be participating in several kilt wearing activities this summer and could use some "one liners" as well as decent or indecent chucklers pertaining to the manly "wearing of the plaid". Thanks all.

A decent kilt shop will have ones you can try on, I would go that route. Remember the rule on length, when the wearer kneels down, the hem should just touch the floor.

I am about to buy my first kilt and I was wondering about the measurements...i see sites that say do it around the navel...but my belly sticks out a ways....can't I do it for my trouser waist instead? or do i measure just under the belly or what?
