Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Doug Chadwick Date: 10 Apr 06 - 03:05 AM Letty, Most of the B&Bs seem to centred around Wellington Road or near to the University in Western Road. Which of these areas would you recommend? Are they within walking distance of where we will be gathering? DC |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 10 Apr 06 - 07:44 AM I feel honoured sincerely by Greg's kind commemoration and am proud to have qualified by participating only thrice as a furniture. My only hope is that you do not miss me as a voluptuous waste paper basket full of nonsense, but also as a shelf full of valuable knowledge. I shall miss you, too, dear friends, and your jolly songs and music. Please give the exact hour in Z-time (mil. for GMT [not daylight saving time!]) when you will drink the warm toast to Skarpi; I shall lift my bumper, too. My wife is playing lotto again, but I am afraid she will not win in time to pay for a stay with you. With my proverbial luck I do not see any chance to win the money myself. Sing and enjoy! Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: GUEST Date: 20 Apr 06 - 07:39 PM The reason the programme's still vague is because it is still 8 months away! With only two weeks to go, it still seems no less vague. Or have I missed something ? Does anyone have any idea exactly where in Cork we will be gathering ? If so, would you care to share it ? DC |

Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: MudGuard Date: 23 Apr 06 - 03:01 PM Does anyone have Letty's phone number (mobile or landline)? If so, please pm me. |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Wolfgang Date: 24 Apr 06 - 11:53 AM Next week, we should seriously discuss where the visitors from the continent and the big island could meet each other in Cork just in case we hear nothing from Letty by then. They are not going to refund my ticket so I'll be in Cork whatever happens (or not). Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Skipjack K8 Date: 24 Apr 06 - 12:42 PM Good idea, Wolfgang. If we don't hear from Letty by say next Tuesday, 2nd May, we'll agree an RV then. |

Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: GUEST,Paranoid Android Date: 25 Apr 06 - 06:48 AM Ryanair have flights from Dublin to Cork for FREE. 33 euros landing charges is all you pay. I have booked into Ambassador Best Western hotel for 50 euros per night. Seems like a high class spot so the price is OK. I am totally unfamiliar with Cork city so I hope somone will provide a timetable of events and locations so that I can try to familiarise myself with the "Map" before I travel. |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Wolfgang Date: 26 Apr 06 - 04:10 PM Last time I was in Cork was 40 years ago. Does that count as being familiar with? They might even have traffic lights by now or accept Euros. Under the clock? I thought it was in the pub with the Guinness sign? Wolfgang (Beneath the light-hearted comment I slowly start worrying) |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: MudGuard Date: 27 Apr 06 - 01:58 AM Susanne (who can't come to Cork) has sent me an email address and a phone number of Letty's parents in the early hours this morning. Before I went to work today, I sent them an email asking about Letty, and when I am back from work, I'll try to phone them (unless I got an answer before that). Hopefully they do understand enough of my broken English or my Deutsch, as I don't speak Dutch at all ... |

Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Letty Date: 28 Apr 06 - 11:34 AM Rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated. The weekend is on, with my sincere apologies, but this is the first time I am able to get through to the site in a while! DC: both locations fine, Wellington may be a bit closer, but a steep walk back, and Western Rd is fine as long as you don't mind a brisk walk. Downtown Cork has no real B&Bs, only hotels. Very little green there! Can people confirm if they're going by email, as I'm afraid my connection is very bad...LNijhuis at hotmail.com I will then send everyone the programme if I cannot get on! Pub of choice is confirming this weekend, but probably the Abbey Tavern! This is near the cathedral, and would be slightly closer to Washington street. Are you all coming? For a tour I will need that headcount... Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Letty Date: 28 Apr 06 - 11:59 AM Suggesion for the Saturday tour: A trip to Midleton Distilleries. The bus leaves at 10.30 from the bus station (Cork city centre), a day return will cost E6,30. In Midleton, we then take a tour through the distillery, which will set us back E7,00, but think of the knowledge gained. We can then take the bus back at 14.45 or 15.30, to make ready for the session. How does this sound? |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Letty Date: 29 Apr 06 - 07:22 AM So, the programme is as follows: Saturday Morning: excursion to Jameson Distillery Afternoon: session in the Abbey Tavern Dinner: I will book us a restaurant. Star Vast in Princes Street is Chinese (but with the option of chips, which I find very funny in Irish Chinese restaurants) and friendly, plus very central and not too expensive as Irish restaurants go. They may even turn the karaoke on for you if you ask nicely... Evening: am trying to get us into the top floor of the Old Oak (Oliver Plunkett Street), but if I don't hear back I'll give An Spailpín Fanach a try. Sunday: Morning: free, for sleeping in or your own excursion (try Blarney, buses leave from the bus station regularly. Castle with some famous stone, and THE opportunity to get your woolly jumpers (no, not sheep crossed with kangaroos) in the Woollen Mills. Afternoon: if we behave on Saturday, we'll be welcome in the Abbey again, otherwise we'll be off to Charlie's, where there's a regular session to invade. |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Letty Date: 29 Apr 06 - 07:24 AM I know some people are arriving Friday night. I will devise a cunning plan to get y'all to the Grange Bar, which is in a suburb. Friday nights are tricky for sessions in Cork (as are Saturdays), as they are generally reserved for some mysterious thing called 'popular' music. Apparently young people like that. |

Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: Letty Date: 30 Apr 06 - 10:25 AM As far as I know, Charlie's is still on on the Sunday. And for the singers: from 9.30 in the SpailpÃn, there's a singers' night every Sunday. |
Subject: RE: Eurogathering 2006 - Cork, EIRE From: alanww Date: 30 Apr 06 - 05:05 PM Hi Letty & everyone I see Sandy & I are still on the list of potentials. Sorry, while I would have certainly love to have come, after singing trips to New Zealand & Holland so far this year and more expensive flights to Cork than I had originally assumed, the money has just run out! I hope that a great time is had by all ... " ... I've spent it in good company!" Alan |
